Ask Away: The Best of 2011’s Movieline Interviews

Another year, another couple hundred entries in the ever-deepening conversational archive known as The Movieline Interview . They’re the collective backbone of our site, and in 2011, it was at its strongest. Look back with us now at the highlights, including the luminary likes of Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jason Segel, Jodie Foster, Paul Giamatti, and a certain honey badger of a director. Kristen Wiig (March 11) Do you feel that [Wiig’s infamous SNL character] Gilly is polarizing? I feel it’s a character that people either love or they don’t particularly like. Uh… yeah, probably. I mean, the first time that I did it, my mom, the next day was like, “Oh, I did not like that. That new character you did, I did not like her!” [Laughs] When you thought of that character, did you figure some people wouldn’t embrace her? No. I mean, I think that before I do anything. But someone who doesn’t like Gilly can love Penelope. It’s not you — it’s just your recurring characters are different. I don’t think about it at all. If you’re creating anything at all, it’s really dangerous to care about what people think. Paul Giamatti and Alex Shaffer (March 15) So we are tossing around the idea of doing a “Movies You Had No Idea Paul Giamatti Is In” post. Giamatti : Oh? Big Momma’s House was surprising to me. Giamatti : Not to me! I remember being in that! I guess so. I mean, there are a lot of people out there in the world who know I was in that movie. A lot of people recognize me for that. Shaffer : I remember your story from when you were in Ohio and you were in a bad neighborhood and they told you that you couldn’t walk around… Giamatti : It was in Cleveland, they said, “Don’t leave the set, don’t walk around this neighborhood.” I was like, “Enh.” So I walked around. You know, it was a predominantly black neighborhood, and everybody had seen Big Momma’s House. So I was fine. Everybody was like, “Oh my God, don’t…” And [in the neighborhood] it was just like “[you’re the guy from] Big Momma’s House!” Amy Ryan (March 18) [On the previous season of The Office ] Are you prepared for America’s scorn? What’s that? Taking away Michael Scott… Ohhh! [Laughs] I thought that was the name of a new show! I thought it was a new reality show! I was going to ask what you had coming up… other than America’s Scorn . America’s Scorn actually comes out at Christmas. It’s a Christmas release, yes. It’s me and Vin Diesel. If you starred in a movie with Vin Diesel called America’s Scorn , I would see this movie. I trained for three years for my action sequences. And your character’s name is Melanie Scorn. Melanie Scorn, right! And she just got out of prison, and she and Vin Diesel are on the run. Exactly! Right, they were married and they went their separate ways. But! They still work together. OK, seriously, what do you have coming up? [Laughing] I think America’s Scorn might be my best bet, I don’t have anything coming up, sorry. So… I think I’m actually going to have to look into America’s Scorn . OK, we’re going with that for reporting on your next project. America’s Scorn it is… [Still laughing] It’s the end of the day, we’re both losing our minds. Michelle Williams (March 30) [On getting used to the locations in Meek’s Cutoff ] When I first got there, I thought, ‘I… I… I can’t stay here. I have to turn around and go home. I can’t live here.’ But I’ve come to love it. If you look hard enough, you can see variation in the landscape where you think it’s actually completely barren and nothing lives out there. You spend a little time, you look a little closer, and you see what’s actually inherent to the land. But at first it felt like we’d been sent to Mars. You know! The desert does crazy things to people’s minds! Mirages! Carlos Castañeda! Peyote! It’s the desert! Wes Bentley (May 3) Are there big films or opportunities that you feel your addiction led you to miss out on? Oh, yeah. Definitely. I definitely did. I had a lot of opportunities. When you’re in that state you miss meetings, you don’t pay attention to what people are asking you to do, which could be great things. I also feared it; I think I feared my success and what I thought were the expectations of me — which was actually just people believing in you, you know? So your addiction can make you believe certain things are happening that aren’t. It also can make you miss things that actually are happening. Your mind is all twisted. I missed a lot of opportunities. I regret how I acted and behaved in those choices, or if I hurt people especially, but I don’t regret where I’m at now. I’ve never been happier, and I could only be here by having made some terrible choices, unfortunately. Jodie Foster (May 4) Knowing him as well as you do, do you think that Mel Gibson really would be OK with never acting again, as he recently said? I think it probably sounded more glib than it was; it’s a conversation he and I have had many times, and I say it all the time. You know, I’ve worked for 45 years as an actor and it’s a long time to do one job and there are a lot of other ways to tell stories.Would I be OK if I never acted again? Who would I be? Would I be somebody new? We ask ourselves these questions all the time. He was a kid, too, when he started. There are times when I really put it aside, and as I say to him, ‘Look, there’s only one reason for you to act, there’s only one motivation, and that’s because it moves you.’ And honestly, you shouldn’t do it for any other reason. Because you don’t need to — he doesn’t need to, he doesn’t need that identity. And he doesn’t need the extra inhuman stress of being a celebrity. Paul Feig (July 5) [On Bridesmaids ‘ success] It got me out of movie jail, which I at least had one foot in. You’re proud of all your babies that you make, but I’m a realist and I know the business. If you make babies and they don’t make money, people don’t want to make more babies with you. So, at least I get a few more shots. J.K. Simmons (Aug. 3) It seems like you’re in a pretty sweet spot in your career right now with four movies in various stages of production, your work on The Closer , a steady stream of voice roles. Do you remember the moment when you felt like you had really established yourself as an actor ? I’m still not sure that I have. [Laughs] Unless your name is Clooney or Pitt or Hanks, I think it’s hard to feel completely like you’re established or where you want to be. This script, which I am eternally grateful for, came to me but only after it bounced off a couple other guys first who didn’t want to do it or couldn’t schedule it. I’d love to be more established. I’d love to never have to audition for the rest of my life and have every good script in Hollywood come my way. At the same time, when I look back twenty years and remember that I was struggling to pay my rent for a crappy apartment in Hell’s Kitchen and doing regional theater for a subsistence wage, and now I’m able to live in a big, fancy house and send my kids to private school — there’s always somebody who is better off and worse off than you are. That’s an important perspective to keep in mind I guess. Jessica Chastain (Aug. 29) [On the fine line of awards campaigning] “I’m never going to take out an ad. I know, famous last words — never say never — but I really can’t imagine ever in my life doing something like that. To me, it’s not a short sprint. I want to be a career actor. The most important thing to me is that people like the films. If they like the films and they like the performances, it means that I get work with other great actors and make other great films. So it’s not about an award. Of course it’s nice that there’s awards buzz around the films because it means they get more attention. But I’m not the person who’s going to… I mean, I’m not outgoing. I’m very shy. I was never the girl in high school who was wanting to be in office or something — who would campaign for myself to become student-body president. [Laughs] I’m just not that person.”

John Legend Engaged To Chrissy Teigen

Singer popped the question during a vacation in the Maldives. By Jocelyn Vena John Legend and Chrissy Teigen in November Photo: Jeff Kravitz/AMA2011/FilmMagic John Legend is officially off the market. The singer asked his girlfriend, Chrissy Teigen, to marry him over the holidays. The couple confirmed the news in a statement to People. “John Legend and his girlfriend, model Chrissy Teigen, got engaged over the holidays while vacationing in the Maldives,” a rep confirmed. People reports that while little else is known about how they celebrated the good news, Legend will be in Las Vegas this weekend performing at the Pearl at the Palms on New Year’s Eve. “We validate or shut down whatever each of us is doing,” Legend told People in May about how the pair help style one another. “[It’s] all of the time. We were together when we picked out our clothes today. She’s better [at it]. It’s harder to dress a woman — there are so many options and accessories. For guys we only have so many elements.” The couple began dating in 2007. Teigen is best known for her work as a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. It’s a big week for Legend, who will also celebrate his birthday Wednesday. Legend and Teigen weren’t the only pair who got engaged over the holidays: Matthew McConaughey popped the question to his model girlfriend, Camila Alves, on Christmas Day. He took to Twitter to share the good news. “Just asked camila to marry me, merry Christmas,” he tweeted, also posting a photo of him and Alves kissing next to Christmas decorations. Quote Of The Day: Hollyweird Actor Daniel Craig Says Politicians Are “S***heads”

Here he goes again… After already providing his illuminating views on the Kardashian clan and their success, actor Daniel Craig has continued to speak with candor, this time on the subject of politicians. Daniel Craig isn’t one to mince words, and in the latest issue of Men’s Health, he has found his latest target: politicians. “You immediately are aligning yourself with a political party,” Craig told the magazine. “Politicians are sh–heads. That’s how they become politicians, even the good ones. “We’re actors, we’re artists, we’re very nice to each other. They’ll turn around and stab you in the f–king back.” Craig, 43, earlier this year called the Kardashians “f–king idiots” for parading around Hollywood televising their most intimate moments, and his assessment of kowtowing politicians is no less flattering. “Tony Blair started it much more than anybody’s ever done,” he said of politicians who attempt to be on-the-ins with the celebrity crowd. “It becomes ‘Mephisto,’ ” he said, referencing a 1981 film about an actor who aligns with the Nazis in order to climb the social ladder. One man who balances on the line between politicians and celebrity that the “James Bond” actor does respect, however, is George Clooney. “George has his finger on the political pulse, and he’s one of those guys who can get up and talk, and I don’t have that … If someone shoves a microphone in your face and says, ‘Explain yourself,’ you have to have a 100% understanding of why you’re doing it, and unless you’re 100%, don’t f–king do it, leave it alone, let your work speak for itself.” We like this guy, he just tells it like it is. Want To Look Younger & Be Wrinkle-Free? Eat Less Sugar!

Read the rest here:

This is going to be hard to hear, but the truth is, for those of us working to combat the aging process, sugar is a formidable enemy. I know it tastes really good and we’re conditioned to love it, but unfortunately, the sweet stuff pillages our skin’s elasticity . What’s even worse is that pigging out on sugar can make us deathly ill and dangerously fat. Sorry folks, but we’ve had our fun fling with sugar; time to kick it to the curb. Let’s be real though, most of us (myself included) will never be able to get over sugar entirely. We’re going to creep back to it, ’cause the stuff is just so good. But, we really have to learn to keep it to minimum if we care about our health and youth. Here’s why: Sugars (ALL sugars, even natural sweeteners like agave, honey, and maple syrup) raise our blood glucose level. Natural sugars are a little better for us, because they raise it less, or more slowly, and they do contain some nutrients (white sugar has none), but, all sugars raise the blood sugar level and that is a problem… According to anti-aging specialist Dr. Nicolas Perricone, a spike in our blood sugar level causes inflammation on a cellular level, which causes our skin to wrinkle. Did he say wrinkle ? Sugar gives us wrinkles? Yes, it does . Time for us to drop the donuts. Back away from the Krispy Kreme. Dr. Perricone is hardly alone in his assertion about sugar and wrinkles. Because I read books and articles on anti-aging as frequently as most of us check Facebook and Twitter, I know that many of the anti-aging doctors including Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Howard Murad, Dr. Jessica Wu and Dr. Adrienne Denese advise us to avoid sugar. Dr. Wu, a Beverly Hills dermatologist, says: “Glucose actually eats away at your skin’s collagen and elastin .” The horror. Here’s the science behind the claim: When our blood sugar spikes quickly and repeatedly, the sugar attaches to the proteins (collagen and elastin) in our skin, rendering them stiff and inflexible . This process is called “glycation.” These harmful sugar molecules form compounds called “advanced glycation end-products,” or AGEs. As these “AGEs” accumulate they damage adjacent proteins, which leads to sagging skin, and wrinkles. This is sad news for those of us who just can’t go without something sweet. I’m sorry, but life is not worth living without my daily dark chocolate! (It’s okay, we can indulge in a little .) But, if you’re serious about staying young-looking, even as you move into middle-age, you have got to consider cutting back your sugar intake considerably. Now, you might be saying some of the same things I said myself at first: “I’m not gonna worry about this. I have good genes. My mother ate sugar and she still looks good. Black don’t crack.” I hear you. If wrinkles aren’t enough to get you off the sweet stuff, though, I’ve got more for you and the news gets worse. In April of 2011, The New York Times published an article called “Is Sugar Toxic?” written by Gary Taubes. The article discussed the work of a hormone specialist, Dr. Robert Lustig, who presented a lecture in 2009 called “Sugar: The Bitter Truth,” which I highly recommend. You can find it on Youtube. Lustig’s research concludes that sugar is, indeed, toxic and that it is not only aging us , it’s making us sick and fat . His evidence, which includes statistics on diabetes and obesity levels since the “low fat” craze began, is compelling. Processed “fat free” foods generally contain more sugar , which helps make them taste better after all the delicious fat has been removed. Sugar and its evil twin High Fructose Corn Syrup , which is ubiquitous in processed foods and beverages, is not just bad for us; according to Lustig, it’s a POISON akin to alcohol and cigarettes. I knew that too much sugar could contribute to diabetes, but Lustig’s research found that sugar consumption also leads to heart disease, hypertension and many common cancers as well. Astonishing, isn’t it? If I didn’t know people who’ve had heart disease, hypertension and cancer I might be disinclined to believe this. But knowing the dietary habits of friends and family who have been victims of these conditions makes me less skeptical. Each of them ate sugar with abandon. Another surprising and disheartening thing I learned via Lustig is that fruit juice isn’t as good for us as we thought. Whole fruit is much better than juice, because  whole fruit contains fiber which helps keep it from suddenly spiking our blood sugar level. Fruit juice has a lot of sugar, with no fiber to mitigate it. Too much of it can raise the blood glucose level as fast as regular sugar. Even if you aren’t convinced of the correlation between sugar and diseases, the fact that it speeds up the aging process has been accepted in the anti-aging community well before Lustig’s 2009 lecture. Doctors overwhelmingly agree that sugar and HFCS cause inflammation and inflammation is an enemy to our skin. Omitting sugar from our diets entirely is probably never going to happen, because even fruits, vegetables and whole grains turn to glucose (the type of sugar that fuels glycation) when digested. And we’re never giving up chocolate, right? Of course not. But we can cut back. An article in Prevention, written by Karen Repinski recommends the following guidelines: “Keep added sugar to no more than 10% of total calories. If you’re a 45-year-old woman of average height (5-foot-4), that’s 160 calories (or 10 teaspoons) from added sugar–about the number in one 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola or six Hershey’s Kisses. By comparison, the average American consumes 31 teaspoons per day of added sugar, or the equivalent of 465 calories.” So, if you’re among those who can’t live without regular sugar, follow her guidelines. Processed sugar doesn’t do it for me, because it’s got no health benefits at all, but I do like honey, maple syrup and agave, so I’m trying to stick to no more than 160 calories per day from those. I also recommend Stevia , which is a natural sweetner (made from a plant) that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals. Stevia has very few calories and it’s recommend by Dr. Wu, author of Feed Your Face, and also by by Dr. Howard Murad, author of The Water Secret . Other than Stevia, most anti-aging specialists do not recommend artificial sweeteners, like Equal, because the chemicals in them cause us to crave sweets. Here are some recommendations: 1. Read labels and check for sugar in prepared foods. Don’t eat foods that contain high fructose corn syrup . This is easier said than done, because it’s in so many things, but if you eat fewer processed foods and more whole foods, you can avoid it. 2. Consider omitting sodas from your diet. Instead drink water, carbonated water with a splash of lemon or lime, tea, or coconut water. 3. Stop adding processed sugar to food and beverages. Replace it with honey, agave or maple syrup, but use the least amount your taste buds will allow. 4. Drink less fruit juice (which is all sugar, no fiber) and eat the whole fruit instead. Or make smoothies from low sugar fruits, like strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. 5. Eat fewer high glycemic carbohydrates like white flour, white rice and pasta. Instead, eat whole grains, like brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa or whole wheat pasta. Sorry to have been the bearer of bad news. The fact that sugar is so damaging to us is hard to accept. Sugar has comforted us throughout our lives and it’s immensely difficult to revise our view of it and to curb our habit of consuming it without worry. Still, knowledge is power and it is empowering to know the consequences of what we feed ourselves. That said,  I’m not suggesting that we live joyless, abstemious lives never eating anything fun and sweet. Just cut back and eat less sugar. You know you’ll be better off if you do, even if you’d rather not hear it. Wishing you good health and great beauty. Steven Spielberg ‘Never’ Thinks About Retiring

‘Adventures of Tintin’ and ‘War Horse’ director tells MTV News, ‘I don’t feel any different than when I was 12 years old making movies.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Steven Spielberg Photo: MTV News In looking at Oscar-winner Steven Spielberg’s resume or IMDb page, it’s the stuff of two or three careers, not just one. Who knows when the man sleeps, as he has not one but two highly anticipated, expected-to-be-blockbuster films in theaters this holiday season: “The Adventures of Tintin” and “War Horse.” Not that we anticipate he’ll slow down anytime soon, with “Lincoln” and “Robopocalypse” set to hit theaters in 2012 and 2013, respectively — not to mention the slew of films on which he serves as a producer, plus the constant rumblings about the possibility of more “Indiana Jones” and “Jurassic Park” movies. When MTV News sat down with the prolific director recently during the press day for “Tintin,” we asked his thoughts about slowing down. “I never think about being tapped out or retiring. Even though I’m turning 65 in a matter of a week, I never think about that; it just doesn’t occur to me,” he replied. “I just love so much the work and the discovery: the whole process of discovering a new story, a new way to shoot a film, working with new actors I’ve always wanted to work with and never got a chance to until now. And so, for me, every day is a new day, every day is exciting. “And I don’t feel any different than when I was 12 years old making movies with my dad’s 8-millimeter movie camera: I’ve got that same kind of percolation every time I get onto a set.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Adventures of Tintin” and “War Horse.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
