‘They can’t further their education because of their situation, because of money,’ Hov tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Jay-Z Photo: MTV News It is Jay-Z ‘s competitive spirit that has made him one of the best rappers of all time as well as one of hip-hop’s most successful businesspeople. However, when it comes to his charitable efforts, Hov is driven by something very different: his desire to share his wealth of experience with the world. “You’ve been blessed. Your talent has taken you to places you never thought you would see. I just think as a compassionate human being, you want people to see,” Jay told MTV News before describing the first time he saw Italy. Hov, who was amazed with his own early travels abroad, called an old friend and urged him to “pack a bag” because he simple had to see Italy. On December 8, the God MC announced that he would be playing two benefit shows at New York’s Carnegie Hall , the proceeds from which will go to the United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. The money raised will help put low-income NYC students in a position to attend college. Back in September, the Shawn Carter Foundation threw a fundraising carnival on the west side of Manhattan where celebrity guests like New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez and pitcher C.C. Sabathia bought high-priced tickets to help Hov’s cause. All the Watch the Throne MC wants to do is create an opportunity. To help illustrate his interest in helping to educate young people, Jay quoted a line from the final scene of the 1993 Robert De Niro film “A Bronx Tale”: “The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.” “That really bothers me, someone who really applies themselves and wants to go and they can’t further their education because of their situation, because of money or because they have to stay in the house to watch their [siblings],” Jay told MTV News. “Something about that really bothers me.” Jay and his mother, Gloria Carter, started the Shawn Carter foundation in 2002 to help those facing socioeconomic difficulties further their education at institutions of higher learning. The foundation started with one student earning a full ride through college and grew to offer 50 scholarships to students in 50 different states annually. To date, more than 750 students have been awarded scholarships totaling in excess of $1.3 million. Tickets for the Carnegie Hall shows, which will take place on February 6 and 7, will be sold privately and priced at a premium rate, fetching anywhere from $500 to $2,500 to raise a significant pot of money for the charity. Regular fans aren’t completely shut out though. On January 30, a number of reasonably priced tickets will go on sale to the public. The publicly sold seats are being released close to the concert date in hopes of curtailing scalping. “We’re not just doing a show for the sake of it,” Hov said. “For all these years, [the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation has] been really grassroots. My mom has been getting on the bus herself and taking kids to orientation and doing this work by herself. Now … we’re building this thing out.” Related Artists Jay-Z
Kanye West may be spending time praising Mannie Fresh but Wutang Clan’s The RZA has some kind words for Yeezy. During one of those extensive Red Bull Music Academy lectures The RZA discussed his work with Kanye West on My Dark Twisted Fantasy and what he observed about his work ethic. “I spent two weeks with him in Hawaii working on his album, ” he began.” And let me tell you what this young man does. They get up every morning and have breakfast together, him and his whole crew. They talk about yesterday, the next day and the present…how to make their music better. Then they exercise together, focus and get their energy up. Then they go do some charity work…good Karma. Then he goes to the studio from 4pm to 4am, 12 hours. Then wake up and do it again the next day…the way everything happened was focused energy and I never saw that from a rapper before.” [RBMA] RZA: de trabajar con Kanye West from Extended Play on Vimeo . Whoopi Goldberg farted on The View hardcore today. Seriously, there’s breaking wind and there is cutting ass. This is the latter. It was a loud one, and there’s no hiding it. To her credit, Whoopi didn’t even try after the fart interrupted her interview with Homeland star Claire Danes, saying, “Excuse me, I think I just blew a little frog outta there!” Seriously: Whoopi Goldberg Farting on The View A rep for ABC said that Whoopi Goldberg farting on The View ( not for the first time , either) “was in good fun … secretly we hoped it would get posted on YouToot.” Gotta give them credit for honestly. And that play on words.
Did Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin get plastic surgery? Look at the photos below and decide for yourself, but rumors have been swirling about the supposed transformation of the 59-year-old’s face. He’s looking a lot, uh, less stressed these days, as these before and after pictures show … Notice on the right, his forehead is smoother, his cheeks glowing, the deep lines that once characterized his hardened (albeit still handsome) face all but forgotten. Britain’s Guardian newspaper speculates that Botox did the trick and also suggests that Vladimir Putin has also undergone some plastic surgery – small nip/tucks. Quoted by the Guardian , four plastic surgeons analyzed Putin’s new look and concluded he had the work done in advance of his upcoming election bid in March. To that end, CBS News reports on Friday that a brand new poll shows that he is slipping in his approval rating, to 51 percent, down from 61 percent last month. Desperate political times call for the occasional cosmetic procedure? Who’s to say.

For some reason, Forbes.com thought it was a good idea to post an article called “If I Were A Poor Black Kid.” Check out a few excerpts and let us know your thoughts: President Obama gave an excellent speech last week in Kansas about inequality in America. “This is the defining issue of our time.” He said. “This is a make-or-break moment for the middle class, and for all those who are fighting to get into the middle class. Because what’s at stake is whether this will be a country where working people can earn enough to raise a family, build a modest savings, own a home, secure their retirement.” He’s right. The spread between rich and poor has gotten wider over the decades. And the opportunities for the 99% have become harder to realize. The President’s speech got me thinking. My kids are no smarter than similar kids their age from the inner city. My kids have it much easier than their counterparts from West Philadelphia. The world is not fair to those kids mainly because they had the misfortune of being born two miles away into a more difficult part of the world and with a skin color that makes realizing the opportunities that the President spoke about that much harder. This is a fact. In 2011. I am not a poor black kid. I am a middle aged white guy who comes from a middle class white background. So life was easier for me. But that doesn’t mean that the prospects are impossible for those kids from the inner city. It doesn’t mean that there are no opportunities for them. Or that the 1% control the world and the rest of us have to fight over the scraps left behind. I don’t believe that. I believe that everyone in this country has a chance to succeed. Still. In 2011. Even a poor black kid in West Philadelphia. If I was a poor black kid I would first and most importantly work to make sure I got the best grades possible. I would make it my #1 priority to be able to read sufficiently. I wouldn’t care if I was a student at the worst public middle school in the worst inner city. Even the worst have their best. And the very best students, even at the worst schools, have more opportunities. Getting good grades is the key to having more options. With good grades you can choose different, better paths. If you do poorly in school, particularly in a lousy school, you’re severely limiting the limited opportunities you have. And I would use the technology available to me as a student. I know a few school teachers and they tell me that many inner city parents usually have or can afford cheap computers and internet service nowadays. That because (and sadly) it’s oftentimes a necessary thing to keep their kids safe at home then on the streets. If I was a poor black kid I’d use the free technology available to help me study. I’d become expert at Google Scholar. I’d visit study sites like SparkNotes and CliffsNotes to help me understand books. I’d watch relevant teachings on Academic Earth, TED and the Khan Academy. (I say relevant because some of these lectures may not be related to my work or too advanced for my age. Is this easy? No it’s not. It’s hard. It takes a special kind of kid to succeed. And to succeed even with these tools is much harder for a black kid from West Philadelphia than a white kid from the suburbs. But it’s not impossible. The tools are there. The technology is there. And the opportunities there. In Philadelphia, there are nationally recognized magnet schools like Central, Girls High and Masterman. These schools are free. But they are hard to get in to. You need good grades and good test scores. And there are also other good magnet and charter schools in the city. If I was a poor black kid I would get technical. I would learn software. I would learn how to write code. I would seek out courses in my high school that teaches these skills or figure out where to learn more online. I would study on my own. I would make sure my writing and communication skills stay polished. Because a poor black kid who gets good grades, has a part time job and becomes proficient with a technical skill will go to college. There is financial aid available. There are programs available. And no matter what he or she majors in that person will have opportunities. They will find jobs in a country of business owners like me who are starved for smart, skilled people. They will succeed. President Obama was right in his speech last week. The division between rich and poor is a national problem. But the biggest challenge we face isn’t inequality. It’s ignorance. So many kids from West Philadelphia don’t even know these opportunities exist for them. Many come from single-parent families whose mom or dad (or in many cases their grand mom) is working two jobs to survive and are just (understandably) too plain tired to do anything else in the few short hours they’re home. Technology can help these kids. But only if the kids want to be helped. Yes, there is much inequality. But the opportunity is still there in this country for those that are smart enough to go for it. His Gus Fring is part of MTV News’ Top 10 TV Characters of 2011. By Kevin P. Sullivan Giancarlo Esposito as Gustavo ‘Gus’ Fring on “Breaking Bad” Photo: Ursula Coyote/ AMC “Breaking Bad” found itself in a unique position at the beginning of its fourth season. Critics and fans alike had heralded it as “the best show on television” for years, and heading into the most recent season, creator Vince Gilligan and the team behind the show had the seemingly impossible challenge of topping the three previous years of nail-biting episodes. So what did they decide to do? They made the main character, Bryan Cranston’s Walter White, into a weakling. His nemesis, the mild-mannered but perpetually dangerous Gustavo Fring, played by Giancarlo Esposito, beat him at every turn. The action slowed to the point where some fans declared it boring, but that was all part of the game. In the slow-down, we learned more about the characters, in particular Esposito’s Gus Fring, who had emerged after two menacingly quiet years on the show as a fan favorite. Each seemingly docile moment added up to what may go down as one of the greatest slow burns in the history of television. It all led to the most-talked-about moment in television this year — SPOILER ALERT! Gus Fring’s explosive death. MTV News spoke with Esposito about his character, why Gus caught on with fans like he did and filming the infamous “Face Off” scenes. MTV : Giancarlo, I think some congratulations are in order. You made it into the top 10 of MTV News’ Top 50 Television Characters of 2011 . Giancarlo Esposito : Oh, awesome! Really awesome. See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 50 to 41, including a masked bachelor and dashing novelist/crime-fighter. MTV : What did you like about Gus as a character? Esposito : I had loved what I was reading in season four when the writing started to come down for each episode, and I realized I had the opportunity to do a couple different things. One was to play an extremely villainous character, but also to layer him with a lot of grace and kindness and make him a likable bad guy, in a way. The way I created Gus and the way I started to read it was I was very impressed he was someone who would work in his own restaurant and serve his own customers from the very beginning. I thought if I could play him with this very caring, sensitive attitude that it would go a long way. So I was a bit surprised when people got more wrapped around who Gus really was and started to like him, even though he had such deeply evil aspects to him. See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 40 to 31, including a “hootie hoo!”-hollering chef and funnyman talk-show host. MTV : Did you see him becoming such a highly regarded character? Esposito : No, no I did not. I was just going about doing my work, and I had no expectations other than enjoying what I was doing in trying to create a full and measured character that I could enjoy and I would imagine the writers would love. I had no idea the audience would get so wrapped around what I was doing as an actor and what Gus was portraying as a character. Check out our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 30-21, including a depressed meth cook and a football coach with a heart of gold. MTV : What was your favorite part about playing him? Esposito : I think my favorite part was the idea that you could have a man hiding in plain sight, that here is the man who is not afraid to be gracious and kind and have a great amount of courage avoiding being found out. I think the smart part of Gus really appealed to me. I think it’s been a long time since we’ve seen a character so well put together and so intelligent and so graceful, and he pulls it off. For me that was my favorite part of the character. I also loved that he had such great dominance over Walt, that he was an adviser, that he was trying to get Walt to do what he wanted to do, but he also wanted Walt to become a better person. I love that fact as well. He wasn’t just someone who was a bully. He was someone who was saying, “Your life will be better. You should provide for your family. This is what a man does. He provides.” In a way, Gus was a partner to Walt in many aspects of his life, not only economically through the business, but also advising him on how to live his life. I think that has to be the favorite parts for me. MTV : What was your initial reaction to reading the “Face Off” scene? Esposito : I knew we were going to kill Gus in that way, so I was a bit prepared for the possibility that it would be quite brutal and quite gruesome. What I loved about it was that it was a much more intimate moment than I had ever expected. Vince and I had talked, and he had asked me what Gus might be doing if this explosion happened. I said, “You probably observed me and what I do. I make sure my buttons are buttoned when I get up from a seated position and walk out of a room. I check my tie to make sure I’m completely put together and acceptable when I’m leaving space into another space,” and [Gilligan] chose to make the move the tie, and I was really honored by that, because it is something that I do. I was shocked because the way it was done was so absolutely perfect. You really don’t know. You’re held in suspense until the camera comes around and I turn a little bit and you realize, “Oh my gosh. He’s not going to make it through this. He really has lost half of his face.” To me, that was the most shocking moment, in the way that it was done, in the way that suspense was held at bay and in the intimate moment. It was a very intimate moment personally that [Gilligan] captured. I believe it was the right way to go. I was absolutely shocked! All I could think of was, “Can I render this believable?” Check out our Top 50 TV Characters, 20-11, featuring a sword-wielding 9-year-old and a Trouble Tones teen. MTV : What was it like watching the finished scene? Esposito : I was shocked. I was pleased that it came out so well, but always when I die a character death, part of that character death is a personal death as well. I was overwhelmed. I don’t often watch myself die on television, but in this case, it was important for me to see what the team put together. I watched it once, and I couldn’t watch it again, because it was so disturbing. MTV : What did the effects involve for you? Esposito : I got my head cast. That took about an hour to get all the stuff lined up in terms of how to create the mask on my torso. It took about two, two-and-a-half, three-hour makeup to get all that on me. After that, we had to also position dots to be able to add whatever we needed later on, so it was a quite extensive process. Not just a mask out of a store for Halloween. That was my only hesitation about the way all this happened in the end, that it might look cheesy. I didn’t want it to look like a Freddy movie. It had to be something where your mouth would drop and you would look at it and say “Oh my God. That is so real,” and that’s something we’ve never seen on television before. Don’t miss our Top 10 Characters of 2011, including a “Jersey Shore” guidette and a real daughter of New Jersey. MTV : What do you think of the choice to end Gus’ story there with so many questions still unanswered about his background? Esposito : I think it was really difficult for all involved to not have found out more about Gus. I know that the season really called for this showdown, that the town wasn’t big enough for Walt and Gus. For me, it was a little disappointing not to be able to get to some of what I had hoped they would get to, which was his background. In a way I was disappointed. In another way, Vince kept focus. The show is about Walt and what happens to him. Obviously, season four allowed Gus to excel and to see his story. It also gives me pause because there is an opportunity now to go back and find what about Gus that we didn’t know moved him to be as powerful as he is, as gracious as he is, and how did those building blocks come about in his character? I think we still have the opportunity to go back and find that out. MTV : Will that be in flashbacks or just other characters looking into his background? Esposito : I don’t know, but I know that it is an option for us to know. Flashbacks are an option, but I think there are a few other options which I haven’t thought of or, as time goes by, that are a possibility. I wouldn’t count Gus out. I’d also be very interested in seeing what this team does with this end of Gus and move toward the end of Walter’s character arc. I think Gus will be a part of that. In this week’s Hobnobbing, we reflect on the movie’s milestones from the past year. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Murray Close If any film caught Internet fire this year, it was most certainly the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ young-adult novel ” The Hunger Games .” Though the film had been optioned by Lionsgate way back in 2009, 2011 was the year fans finally saw all the pieces come together, from casting the titular tournament’s 24 tributes to a teaser tidbit and full-length trailer. As such, MTV News is taking a look back at all things “Hunger Games” with a list of the franchise’s best moments from 2011 (in chronological order). Let the Games begin! X Marks the Release Date The year began with a bang when Lionsgate announced in late January that “The Hunger Games” would swoop into theaters March 23, 2012 . Lionsgate set that particular date in its crosshairs hoping to capitalize on spring breaks and Easter weekend for the (mostly) family-friendly release. Jennifer Lawrence Is Katniss Everdeen The Reaping then began in earnest, with seemingly every young Hollywood actress vying for the coveted role of District 12’s female tribute. Would it be Hailee Steinfeld? Kaya Scodelario? Abigail Breslin? In the end, MTV News had the pleasure of revealing that then-20-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, who nabbed an Oscar nomination for her work in 2010’s “Winter’s Bone,” would enter the arena as the much-loved heroine. But Who Will Play Peeta and Gale? Similar speculation followed the casting of Katniss’ two love interests — fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark and hunting buddy Gale Hawthorne. Nine young actors were reportedly in contention for one of the two roles, including “Weeds” star Hunter Parrish and “Wizards of Waverly Place” actor David Henrie, but, ultimately, Josh Hutcherson landed the role of Peeta while Liam Hemsworth won Gale. First Look at Lawrence as Katniss Salivating fans didn’t have to wait too long for their first taste of Lawrence as Katniss, as she posed for the cover of Entertainment Weekly, flaunting the tribute’s soon-to-be-iconic uniform . The styled snap quieted many critics who’d said the actress was too blond, too tall, too pretty or too whatever for the role. Cinna Will Rock There were no shortage of casting announcements in spring 2011, but none seemed to catch watchful fans off guard more than that of Lenny Kravitz landing the role of Katniss’ stylist Cinna. But, really, it made a lot of sense, considering the musician’s fondness for fashion. “I like clothes, and I like playing with clothes. Every now and again, you go south. It’s all good. I enjoy fashion as an art,” he told MTV News . The Mockingjay Catches Fire In a nifty bit of promotion, Lionsgate released the first “Hunger Games” poster in July, and it was literally on fire. Well, sorta. The one-sheet depicted Katniss’ infamous talisman — a mockingjay pin — wreathed in glowing flames. The eye-catching motion poster definitely gave fans something to chew on while they waited for more first looks. We Spy Two “Hunger Games” Hotties Following in co-star Lawrence’s footsteps, the men of “The Hunger Games” landed their own EW cover story , in which Hutcherson took the opportunity to quiet a few nagging concerns about his stature.”Jennifer’s not 2 feet taller than me!” he told the magazine. “If anything, maybe she’s a half-inch taller.” November 2013 Is “Catching Fire” We hadn’t even seen a frame of the first film yet, yet Lionsgate announced a November 22, 2013, release date for the follow-up, “Catching Fire.” With “The Twilight Saga” taking its final winter bow in 2012, it looks like “The Hunger Games” is poised to be the new holiday tentpole. A Tasty Tease All those cover images and promotional stills went only so far to sate fans’ appetites. A cinematic preview was in order, and we at MTV were happy to deliver. During the closing moments of this year’s Video Music Awards, viewers were treated to a 30-second sneak peek , following Katniss as she sprinted through the arena’s blazing forest, with Gale’s words of encouragement resounding in her ears. Sure, the bite was short, but it was still satisfying. First Full-Length Trailer Nearly three lean months followed before the first full-length trailer made its entrance into the arena. And boy, was it worth the wait. From the tearful reaping to the Games’ taut opening moments, the clip was one of our top teases of the year , offering a promise of the big-screen awesomeness to follow.
