Rihanna’s “We Found Love” video has caught the attention of the Rape Crisis Center. The clip, which mirrors the abusive relationship between she and her ex Chris Brown, has offended the organization. Ellen Kelly of the RCC claims the video promotes violence, saying: “Rihanna’s new video is a disgrace. It sends the message that she is an object to be possessed by men, which is disturbingly what we see in real violence cases.” However, the director of the video, Melina Matsoukas, defended her work, saying: “In the end, it’s not really at all about domestic violence. It’s really just about it being toxic… It’s not trying to glorify that type of relationship. The bad parts of it, that’s what you don’t want. In the end, her leaving, it represents her getting that out of her life.” Who do you agree with? With collabos between Lil Wayne and Joe Jonas, Taylor Swift and T.I., the lines separating music genres are increasingly becoming blurred. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: FilmMagic In a modern music landscape where genre is pretty much nonexistent, the lines are becoming even further blurred. That’s why music lovers barely flinched when news broke that Justin Bieber will work with Kanye West and his “homey” Drake on his next album . However, more than a decade ago, major mainstream artists like Britney Spears or even *NSYNC (whose very own Justin Timberlake later went on to work with hip-hoppers) would never have thought about hooking up with rappers like Eminem, for instance. In fact, they were the punch line to many of Em’s finest rhymes during the “TRL” era. Today, pop stars and rap stars are unapologetically sharing their love for one another. Lil Wayne, who recently worked with artists including Joe Jonas and Jennifer Lopez, seems to be one of the guys leading the charge. In addition to appearing on tracks with pop stars, Demi Lovato’s and Bieber’s covers of his track “How to Love” have made headlines. So, what is it about Weezy? “I just loved the way that Lil Wayne took a risk doing the song ‘How to Love,’ ” Lovato explained. “And when I really listened to it, it’s such a great song.” That enthusiasm for his work, according to Vibe Music Editor John Kennedy, has a lot to do with Weezy “the man” as well as Weezy “the artist.” “Wayne appeals to the pop world because he’s obviously got a tremendous following and is a talented artist, but he’s a character outside of the music. His image off-wax is just as prominent as his rhymes on record,” he explained. “So when you get Wayne on a record, it’s more than just a hot 16, you’re getting a rebel to society: the sagging denims, tats all over, diamond grills. It just adds rock star flavor with hip-hop appeal.” “On an artistic level, he just seems like an exciting guy to be around who is also willing to try just about everything, so I imagine pop stars can basically say, ‘Hey, can you do this weird thing?’ and he’d say yes,” Entertainment Weekly staff writer Kyle Anderson added about Wayne’s appeal. “From a more business standpoint, working with Wayne not only means chart and radio recognition but also instant cool. He has a cachet that hasn’t faded yet.” But Wayne is hardly the only guy in the game defying the laws of hip-hop and pop. Country superstar Taylor Swift has certainly done her part, appearing in concert with guys like T.I. and B.o.B. “I’m a huge hip-hop fan, and it’s been so amazing to have so many incredible artists come out and to get to sing the hooks on their songs that I’ve been blasting in my car for the last couple years,” she explained. “It’s been awesome. I couldn’t have asked for more amazing special guests on this tour, and we’re not finished yet.” But it’s not just the pop stars singing the praises of rappers and hoping to get some street cred. Rappers are clamoring to hook up with their pop counterparts too, picking up where artists like Mariah Carey/O.D.B. and Christina Aguilera/Redman left off. And recently, Aguilera’s former pop rival, Spears, jumped on the trend when she toured with Nicki Minaj . When MTV News caught up with Minaj backstage on the Femme Fatale Tour, she said that the crossover success has been intriguing and surprising. “I’m always surprised,” she said. “I don’t really expect them to know all the records, but I guess it just kind of transcends all genres of music at this point.” As the genre-bending continues, it seems that the pairings are likely to get more and more unexpected. “I met Justin [Bieber] back in February. He’s a cool kid and sh–,” Tyler, the Creator said of his desire to work with the teen star. “When I got in there, he was talkin’ about the ‘Yonkers’ video and sh–. It was weird, because I was sitting here starstruck, like, ‘Oh, f—, it’s Bieber. He’s asking me questions.’ I’m like, ‘Shut the f— up so I can talk to you.’ ” What do you think of the pop/ hip-hop crossover? Tell us in the comments. Related Photos A Very Bieber Christmas
Forbes magazine predicts Cirque du Soleil tribute show ‘Immortal’ will put King of Pop in the lead again next year. By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage For the second year in a row, Michael Jackson has topped Forbes magazine’s list of top-earning dead celebrities. The King of Pop, who died unexpectedly at age 50 in June 2009, earned an estimated $170 million over the past year, making him the second-highest-earning pop star this year (behind U2) — dead or alive. The megabucks came in from sales of his music, as well as his stake in the lucrative Sony/ATV catalog, and while impressive, was a big step down from the $275 million the Jackson estate earned in the year after the singer’s death. Songwriters who own their work tend to place high on the Forbes list because their catalog sales often remain strong after their death, one of the reasons Jackson’s posthumous career has been so lucrative. The magazine speculated that Jackson is likely to top the list again next year thanks to the recent launch of the Cirque du Soleil tribute show “Immortal,” which, if successful, could net more touring income for the singer in death than he earned in life. In a distant second was the perennial chart-topper in the Forbes tally, Elvis, whose catalog and merchandise sales (not to mention his pricey Cirque show, “Viva Elvis”) helped bring in $55 million from October 2010 to October 2011. Two late Beatles, John Lennon and George Harrison, placed fifth and 13th on the list, respectively, at $12 million and $6 million, also thanks in part to catalog sales and the proceeds from a Las Vegas Cirque show, “Love.” Fifty years after her death, blonde starlet Marilyn Monroe was #3 with $27 million, followed by “Peanuts” cartoonist Charles Schulz. Actress Elizabeth Taylor tied at #5 with Lennon at $12 million, mostly due to the perennially strong sales of her perfumes, just ahead of renowned genius Albert Einstein ($10 million) and Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel ($9 million). Tied at #9 are guitar god Jimi Hendrix, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” author Stieg Larsson, actor Steve McQueen and songwriter Richard Rodgers ($7 million). Harrison was at #13, tied with pin-up icon Bettie Page and pop-art legend Andy Warhol ($6 million). Related Artists Michael Jackson
New York MC is ready to take his music worldwide, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts A$AP Rocky Photo: MTV News A$AP Rocky has been pegged as hip-hop’s next big thing. That phrase might get attached to someone (e.g. Drake, Wiz Khalifa) or some group (see: OFWGKTA) every few months, but A$AP is the first “next big thing” to come out of New York in a while. No offense to French Montana, Fred the Godson or anyone else, but very few up-and-coming New York rappers have garnered as much love on both hip-hop and alternative blogs. And they certainly haven’t been featured in The New York Times — especially with just a handful of songs. When MTV News caught up with A$AP Rocky in New York’s Lower East Side, he said he had his sights focused on bigger things than the Big Apple. “I live here, and New York raised me, New York made me, so at the end of the day, it’s all love for New York. But I appeal to everybody. I want to appeal to people in West Bumblef—, Germany,” A$AP said. “That’s what it’s all about. I can appeal to anybody. Anybody that was raised in poverty, middle class, low middle class, day-to-day regular things, they can relegate to me, because I speak that trill sh–.” A$AP Rocky — born Rakim Mayers — said he started rapping at age 8 but didn’t really start taking it seriously until his late teens/ early 20s. The Harlem MC said, at first, he didn’t know if he was Kanye West, Kid Cudi or what, but once he found himself artistically, other people started to really appreciate his work. He also credited his three main producers — ASAP Ty Beats, SpaceGhostPurpp and Clams Casino — with developing his sound. Ty Beats has produced Rocky’s two most recognizable songs: “Purple Swag,” a sizzurpy ode to Houston hip-hop, and the boastful, melodic “Peso.” Clams Casino rose to fame producing for Lil B the Based God, and Miami’s SpaceGhostPurpp, owner of hip-hop’s best name, is the producer Rocky goes to for his “trill sh–.” “I think my sound is a sound that was inspired by all hip-hop from different regions, cultures [and] times,” he said. “My sound is everything mixed into one. It’s the future. Basically, you don’t have to be limited anymore, and you can sound how you want to sound. That’s natural for us.” “A$AP” is an acronym and almost a surname adopted by Rocky’s crew, and he said it can mean a variety of things, from Always Strive and Prosper to Assassinating Snitches and Police, but Rocky liked Acronym Symbolizing Any Purpose. While most people wait on the release of his debut mixtape, Live. Love. A$AP, on Halloween, he’s already been added to Drake’s Club Paradise Tour. Rocky said he was honored by a co-sign, not only because it was Drake, but because he truly respected the Toronto MC. “He’s in a position to where if he co-signs somebody, it’s valid, and he’s a real lyricist, and he’s got good taste. I mean, look at his music. Therefore, when he comes to listen to people like me and he gets inspired and then wants to take us out on tour, it just shows you he’s a real dude.” Have you checked out A$AP Rocky yet? Lindsay Lohan is free woman, at least until her hearing November 2. The actress posted $100,000 bail after being handcuffed and jailed earlier Wednesday for violating her probation. In three weeks, when she must return to court to really face the music, girl could be looking at more than a year in jail. Scary thought … maybe that’s why she dressed like a ghost today: LiLo gets into the Halloween spirit … for court. Nice look . The actress’ severely-underpaid publicist tells TMZ in a statement : “Lindsay is hoping this matter will be resolved on November 2 and the Court will reinstate probation and allow her to continue fulfilling community service.” Could be wishful thinking. Either way, who dresses up like a corpse for court?? She’ll be getting plenty of exposure to such things, as it turns out, since the actress has been ordered to the L.A. County Morgue for community service. Linds will clean tables where autopsies are performed – and various body parts and fluids often remain for disposal – per Judge Stephanie Sautner’s orders. She will also be sweeping floors, cleaning toilets, washing windows and picking up trash. Lindsay must do 16 hours at the morgue before November 2. Lohan is telling friends she gets why Judge Sautner threw the book at her today and intends to put in those hours – plus overtime – at the morgue. Forgive THG if we’ll take a wait-and-see attitude on that claim. Lohan was essentially jailed today because she didn’t follow Sautner’s prior instructions, instead getting kicked out of her community service program. She then had the audacity to complain that working at L.A.’s Downtown Women’s Center wasn’t fulfilling enough, which really set the judge off. Sources say Lohan took Sautner’s admonitions and the entire experience today as a major warning that she needs to get her act together, ASAP. She plans on going to the morgue every single day between now and her next hearing on November 2 in order to prove how serious she is. Actions speak louder than words, and Lohan hopes to show in the next few weeks that her probation should be reinstated with no jail time. Could be too little too late, because she’s f*%ked up so much already. But if she does take a hint, perhaps Sautner will feel her work is done. What do you think: Jail for LiLo?
With Rent’s Due, ‘It’s time for me to show ’em what south Memphis about,’ Zed Zilla tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Zedzilla Photo: CMG Records Granted, Yo Gotti has yet to release his first major-label album, but the Memphis, Tennessee, spitter is thinking big. While fans await Gotti’s Live From the Kitchen (which he hopes will drop before the year ends), the “5 Star Chick” rapper is ready to further the career of his artist Zed Zilla, who will drop his Rent’s Due mixtape later this month. “We from two different sides: north Memphis, south Memphis,” Zed told Mixtape Daily before explaining how he and Gotti met. “I had a show one day, he had his ear to the streets, came to my show. I rocked it, he liked what he saw … we been click-clackin’ ever since.” Zed has actually been riding alongside Gotti since his 2008 mixtape, Cocaine Muzik . More recently, the pair collaborated on Gotti’s “Fire That Bitch,” a humorous break-up song from Cocaine Muzik 6 . Next up is Zilla’s Rent’s Due with DJ Bigga Rankin. The tape features appearances from Waka Flocka Flame, 2 Chainz and, of course, Gotti. The title is particularly fitting considering one of Zed’s rap aliases is “the Landlord.” “For me, with Rent’s Due, ain’t no way around rent; you gotta pay rent,” he said. “I’m here to collect rent. I been with [Gotti] for a minute, been around the world, did a lot of shows, now it’s time for me to show ’em what south Memphis about.” More than just his skills on the mic, Gotti made sure Zed Zilla was everything he claimed to be before signing him to his Cocaine Muzik Group record label. “First and foremost, you have to do your research and find out how close you is to that actual life you’re talkin’ about,” Gotti explained. “You could be the best lyricist or rapper or songwriter, if you ain’t mentally prepared to put in the work, it’s a waste of time. “When we done the research, [Zed] had all the ingredients that we were looking for,” he continued. “I think he could be the next one.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
We break down our first good look at the superhero supergroup. By Eric Ditzian and Josh Wigler Chris Hemsworth in the “Avengers” trailer Photo: Marvel The first full trailer for “The Avengers” is here, though at first glance, it seemed much more like the work of Michael Bay — a little citizens-ominously-watching-the-skyline “Armageddon” here, a bit of city-block-destroying “Transformers” there — than the handiwork of Marvel and writer/director Joss Whedon. But that voice-over you hear in the beginning (the one assuring us humans were made to be ruled) is none other than Loki, who makes his first appearance about 20 seconds into the new footage, kick-starting a furious visual procession of superheroes, superheroes and more superheroes. While the trailer didn’t deliver everything we were hoping for — nor did it have the ineffable coolness we might have expected — it gave us a whole lot of Marvel goodness to unpack, which we did with another MTV News expert trailer analysis: Loki, Located We’ve known for a long time that Loki is the central villain in “Avengers,” though whether other villains pop up to wreak havoc (like those persistent rumors about the alien Skrulls ) remains to be seen. What we didn’t know was how Loki would travel to Earth, considering the Rainbow Bridge — that mythic intergalactic transporter — was destroyed at the end of this summer’s “Thor.” Yet in that film, before tumbling into some kind of cosmic abyss, Loki announces there are other ways to get to Earth besides the Rainbow Bridge. In this early shot of Loki crouching in a warehouse, we see what just might be the bad guy’s new mode of space transportation. What exactly this “Stargate”-esque contraption is remains to be seen. Turbulence When Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor and the rest of the Avengers assemble, they have to do so in style. In Marvel lore, when they take to the sky, they do so in a super-slick aircraft called the Quinjet, which flies overhead around the 55-second mark of the trailer. So that’s cool. Except the sucker’s on fire and looking like it’s about to crash-land in Manhattan, perhaps as part of the epic urban battle the trailer teases again and again. We can’t say for certain it’s Quinjet — it could be a Skrullian craft — but we doubt it, based on visual comparisons to the comics and the fact that the jet just doesn’t look alien. But do the Skrulls have a hand in the Quinjet’s fiery situation? Or is that all thanks to Loki? Hmmm … This Is Assembling? Who are we kidding? We wanted to see the Avengers assemble — not around the boardroom, table but in action. And the trailer, in this respect, just doesn’t deliver. Alas, the shot (around one minute, 11 seconds in) of our heroes in a lab is the best look at the team together. Hawkeye isn’t even there. Black Widow is mostly hidden. Captain America and Iron Man aren’t even in their suits. Bruce Banner is just Bruce Banner, no hint of the hidden green beast within. We appreciate that Whedon is a writer who loves to pen a witty exchange between characters — we get a lot of that in the trailer, and we’re not complaining — but we also maintain Marvel missed a chance in the trailer to show off the Avengers assembling for the first time in an unforgettable way. Thor vs. the Captain? At about the one-minute, 25-second mark, we have what looks like Thor battling Captain America. Now, the simple explanation is that these Avengers don’t always get along and, hey, even superheroes might come to blows with one another from time to time. No harm, no foul. But here’s a little conspiracy theory for ya: The Skrulls are notorious shape-shifters, and we just might be seeing one of them taking on the guise of an Avenger. So what we might — and we can’t emphasize might enough — be seeing is actually a Skrull-vs.-Avenger throw-down. That kind of can-you-trust-your-buddy paranoia could be a lot of fun to play with in the film. Say Hello to Your Hulk We’ve seen Mark Ruffalo in character as Bruce Banner before. What we haven’t seen — and what honestly makes the whole trailer worthwhile — is this first look at Banner transformed into the Hulk. Ruffalo has spoken often about how his Hulk will be a motion-capture creation modeled on the actor himself. So can we see the Oscar-nominated Ruffalo lurking somewhere inside the green beast? Hard to say in so brief a glimpse. We’ll have to wait to see more “Avengers” footage, which we can’t wait for and which is the clearest indication that for all our quibbles, the trailer is a superheroic success. Check out everything we’ve got on “The Avengers.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
