So Why is Black Swan a Huge Hit, Anyway? (Hint: Lesbians)

As alluded to in this morning’s edition of The Broadsheet, everyone in Hollywood seems stunned by the success story that is Black Swan . Even filmmaker Darren Aronofsky says he can’t make heads or tails of the phenomenon, which has earned recognition everywhere from manic-comic Saturday Night Live segments to the supermarket-tabloid media obsessed with star Natalie Portman (now pregnant by and engaged to marry on-screen dance partner Benjamin Millipied). “I get the teenage-girl part of the audience because it’s a coming-of-age story about a girl becoming a woman. But older people are seeing it too,” he told the LA Times . “I don’t know if even I understand it.” Oh, Darren — don’t start being modest now : Let’s hear it for lesbians!

REVIEW: Director Peter Weir Returns Via Bold, Bumpy Way Back

The kind of filmmaking excitement that director Peter Weir brings to movies is bone deep. It doesn’t emerge in the flashy flourishes that come off as compulsively exhibitionistic — the “Dude, Where’s My Camera Car?” school. Instead, in the potent and dream-like The Way Back , Weir’s subtle control is evident by the way he uses sound, embracing the allure and menace it simultaneously evokes. And we’re reminded how crushingly obvious many directors are about incorporating the aural aspect of their work; generally when the audience is aware of it, it’s used like a blunt object by horror film directors.

Zac Efron Talks About Bulking Up For ‘The Lucky One’

‘I really wanted to put in the work,’ he tells MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Zac Efron Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images We’re sure fans of Zac Efron won’t mind seeing him all muscled up for his next film, “The Lucky One,” based on the Nicholas Sparks book of the same name. Not only did Efron get buffed up for the role , but he also shaved off his signature locks to play a marine who, after three tours in Iraq, returns home to North Carolina to look for the unknown woman he believes was his good-luck charm while he was fighting in the war abroad. “It was hard, man,” Efron recalled about his training for the film when he spoke to MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday night (January 16). “I knew that the second I went to Camp Pendleton and met these real marines, I didn’t have that presence.” So what kind of presence did Efron have to achieve in order to play Logan Thibault in the Scott Hicks-directed film, set for 2012 release? “They’ve got this way about them, but they’re, like, 50 pounds heavier, so I started training immediately to do the best I could,” he explained. ” ‘Cause it’s a kind of sensitive part. I care too much about it to let it slide. I really wanted to put in the work.” The film follows in the more serious direction Efron has been taking in his roles as of late. Last year, he starred in “Charlie St. Cloud,” but he will return to the world of romantic comedies when he stars in the ensemble rom-com “New Year’s Eve” in December. ‘Glee’ Wins Big At Golden Globes

Musical show takes home Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical, plus two acting awards. By Aly Semigran he cast of “Glee” backstage at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage For the second year in a row, “Glee” has had something to sing about at the Golden Globes. Fox’s pop-culture smash has emerged victorious yet again in the Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical category. In addition to besting the hit shows “Modern Family,” “Nurse Jackie,” “The Big C,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “30 Rock,” two of the show’s stars have taken home their first Golden Globe awards. While the show did not sweep — both Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison lost in their categories — it did win more awards than any other television show at the 68th annual Golden Globes. Stunned first-time nominee Chris Colfer kicked things off for “Glee” with his heartfelt speech, which he dedicated to his “fairy godfather Ryan Murphy” and to teens who, much like his character Kurt, are bullied. “The amazing kids that watch our show and that our show celebrates and are constantly told no [by] people and environments and bullies at school, that they can’t be who they are or can’t have what they want because of who they are,” he said, concluding his acceptance speech with, “Screw that, kids.” Next up was Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television winner Jane Lynch. The actress, who has now won a Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award for her work on the show, had lost to “Big Love” actress Chlo

Matt Damon Recognized At Critics’ Choice Awards For Water.org Charity

‘True Grit’ actor receives Joel Siegel Award. By Aly Semigran Matt Damon accepts the Joel Siegel Award at the Critics’ Choice Awards Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images While Matt Damon has taken the back seat to his “True Grit” co-stars Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld so far this awards season, the actor was acknowledged Friday night (January 14) by the Broadcast Film Critics Association during the 16th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards for his humanitarian efforts. In a segment presented by Jimmy Kimmel and Emily Blunt, Damon was given the fourth annual Joel Siegel Award for Service to the Community. While Kimmel provided comic relief, joking that the Oscar winner is “the greatest guy in the world,” the actor received serious accolades for his charity, Water.org. Blunt, who stars with Damon in the upcoming film “The Adjustment Bureau,” explained that the organization Damon co-founded with Gary White helps to “provide developing countries with safe drinking water and sanitation by partnering with local communities.” As Blunt delivered the staggering statistics that less than 1 percent of the Earth’s water is drinkable and more than 1 billion people don’t have access to clean water, Kimmel continued to kid with Damon, telling him, “Sean Penn is actually in Haiti right now … carrying things!” Kimmel, who gets the last laugh at Damon’s expense every night on his late-night show, then cried foul on Damon’s many awards, mocking, “You know how much water he wasted in that shower scene in “School Ties”? A lot!” Damon, playing as good a sport as ever to Kimmel’s jabs, then took the stage to accept his award to a standing-ovation audience that included his “Good Will Hunting” collaborator Ben Affleck. After taking a shot back at Kimmel — “I literally have no idea why you’re here,” he quipped — Damon got serious about receiving what he described as “a wonderful honor.” The actor acknowledged the work of late film critic Joel Siegel, who, as Damon told the crowd, “Believed that you should use celebrity to improve the lives of others and he lived that way. So, I’m really honored to get this in his name.” Though plenty of the segment included joking around with Kimmel, Damon got very serious when he delivered the news that, “Every 15 seconds, a kid somewhere on planet Earth dies because they don’t have access to clean water and sanitation.” Calling that information “disgusting and unacceptable and unnecessary,” he added, “These are issues we’ve known how to solve here for 100 years in our country. … Just imagine if we cured AIDS tomorrow and in 100 years people were still dying of it, 3 million of them a year. It’s just really ridiculous.” Damon concluded his speech by thanking his partner, White, and informed viewers that by donating $25 on the Water.org website, they could give a child “clean water for life.” He then promised that they would change the fact that 1 billion people do not have clean water and offered to viewers, “Feel free to join us.” Related Videos Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet Interviews Related Photos 2011 Critics’ Choice Awards Celebrity Candids 2011 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Show Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet 2011

Dave Franco Talks ‘Fright Night,’ Working With Big Bro James Franco

As one of MTV News’ 11 for ’11, up-and-comer also plans to shop around a Web series about college life. By Kara Warner Dave Franco Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images If you are not already familiar with the name Dave Franco, chances are you will be soon. You might recognize the enterprising 25-year-old from his work on “Greek,” “Privileged” and “Scrubs.” He’s also appeared in several videos on FunnyOrDie.com, including a series called “Acting With James Franco” (James Franco is Dave’s brother). But these are all things from the past. Looking ahead to what’s in store for Franco in 2011, we’ll see him on screens big and small, in front of and behind the camera. When MTV News caught up with the up-and-comer recently, one of our 11 for ’11, we chatted about “Fright Night,” a TV series he’d like to get off the ground and whether we’ll see him at the Oscars in a skit alongside his big bro . MTV : We’ve talked about “Fright Night” before, and even though you’re sworn to secrecy about plot details, have you seen any of the film yet? Dave Franco : I have not seen anything, but I’ve only heard good things so far. I may have mentioned this before, but despite being a vampire movie, it’s very grounded and realistic. If I had to compare it to another vampire movie, I would say “Let the Right One In,” where everything is treated with realism but the only difference is that “Fright Night” happens to be hilarious too, mainly due to really funny actors like David Tennant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Colin Farrell is hilarious also. MTV : You’ve also mentioned that you’ve been working on your own material. What can you tell us about that? Franco : This past semester, I was working more behind the camera, and I directed, produced and wrote this Web series about college life. The basic idea stems from a conversation I had with my friend about how there are really only a handful of projects at most, whether it be film or TV, that really capture what college is like. For the most part, it’s all sensationalized and over-the-top. We decided we wanted to give a very HBO-type look at what really happens in college. We figured, ‘It’s crazy enough as it is; let’s just show what’s really going on.’ So we followed a handful of kids at USC throughout the semester, and the whole tone is a little strange, because it’s part documentary, part reality, part scripted. It’s kind of a weird mesh of everything, but it came out really cool. I hope people respond well to it. I’m happy, because we were able to capture what we set out for. … I went to USC, and watching this footage, I can attest that this is really what it’s like. This is what happens on a typical night. MTV : Sounds intriguing. Where do you want it to end up? Franco : We still need to figure that out. It’s all edited and everything is ready to go. We just have to figure out how we want to present it and where. We’ve always wanted to get this on TV, ideally an HBO, Showtime or FX. We’re almost using this Web series as a pitching tool that will hopefully generate some interest, and then we can go from there. MTV : What else are you working on? Franco : We’re filming a couple of Funny or Die videos later this month. There’s also a feature film that I’m writing for my brother and I to star in, where we play versions of ourselves named Davie and James. Without giving away too much, it all takes place around Thanksgiving and Christmas break around our hometown of Palo Alto [California]. Our real family will be in it, my real friends from home will be in it, and the vibe of it is going to be an extended version of our Funny or Die videos. It’s going to be difficult for me, because it’s now a 90-minute version of him giving me sh– and making fun of me. MTV : Don’t let him do that! Franco : [ Laughs. ] I’ll give it back, trust me, but it takes its toll. It wears on you. MTV : Any chance we’ll see you in something for the Oscars, since you have a pretty good connection to the host? Franco : There’s been talks of us doing a digital short for that. We’ll see, though. Potentially another installment in the “Acting With James Franco.” We’ll see. Check out MTV News’ 11 for ’11 — actors, musicians and TV stars who are about to have a huge year — all week long. Jared Lee Loughner Arrest Records, Bullying History: Revealed

On the day Barack Obama delivered a moving address at the Arizona memorial service for the victims of last week’s tragic shooting in Tuscon, new information about Jared Lee Loughner was revealed. According to police records, the 22-year old accused of killing six people and seriously wounding Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was arrested twice as a juvenile, once for marijuana possession and once for possession of alcohol. The first incident occurred in May 2006, when Loughner was admitted to the emergency room after consuming a bottle of vodka he later said he stole from his parents because he became “very upset after his dad yelled” at him. The second arrest took place in September 2007 following a traffic stop that resulted in cops discovering a joint in Loughner’s ashtray and a pipe in his pocket. Loughner was also the victim of bullying on more than one occasion. In September 2004, police were called to Mountain View High School after Loughner was “stuck with a pin – a stolen type needle, in the cafeteria,” according to official reports. Finally, in October 2008, Loughner contacted local police because he believed a former friend had posted a fake, disparaging MySpace profile about him. No action was taken, and none of this is meant as an excuse for Loughner’s alleged, horrific actions. It’s simply a look into the history of a seriously troubled young man.
