Haiti Has Seen Some Progress Since Earthquake, Relief Workers Say

World Food Programme and Partners in Health have fed and cared for hundreds of thousands of sick and displaced Haitians. By Gil Kaufman Victims of the Haiti earthquake Photo: MTV News No one expected Haiti’s problems to be solved just one year after a monster earthquake hit the island on January 12, 2010 , leveling much of the impoverished nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and killing more than 250,000. The world came together in the weeks after the natural disaster; Americans donated nearly $1.5 billion to help Haiti and another $5.3 billion was pledged at a donors conference two months after the 7.0 magnitude quake. Every penny was needed, as nearly two million people were left homeless, many of them forced into ramshackle tent cities, and nearly 400,000 children were made orphans by the latest natural disaster to strike the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. The 12 ensuing months have not been any easier, with the combined force of hurricane season, a bitterly divisive election and a mysterious cholera outbreak that has taken the lives of more than 3,600 and infected more than 170,000. And while Tulane University medical student Alison Smith told MTV News on Tuesday that her recent trips have found slow progress on the island, representatives from two relief organizations, World Food Programme and Partners in Health, said they are seeing encouraging signs in Haiti. “I think the year later is very different in many, many ways … and in many positive ways,” said Anne Poulsen, a spokesperson for the World Food Programme, one of the organizations that benefited from the more than $58 million raised by MTV’s record-setting “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon . The WFP has launched a number of initiatives on the island, from serving hot meals to more than 1.1 million Haitian children every day through its National School Meals Programme to distributing nutritional supplements to children and pregnant and lactating women (with more than 450,000 helped so far) to projects focusing on debris removal, drainage ditch digging and agricultural rehabilitation that provide paying jobs for more than 140,000. To be sure, Poulsen said, the job was and remains huge and daunting, but the WFP managed to get food out to Haitians within hours of the earthquake and has since provided food assistance for more than 4 million in the country. “One year later, the town looks different. … The rubble has been removed, not all of it. … Buildings half-standing have been demolished. … A lot of the people who were in the tent camps, many of these have found a shelter, maybe not a permanent house,” said Poulsen, who recalled the devastation she saw when she first arrived last January as among the worst she’s seen in many years of relief work. “You can see business back up, you can see markets functioning, you can see women carrying their fruit and vegetables down from the mountains,” she said, noting that the number of people in temporary shelters has decreased from 1.5 million in the aftermath of the earthquake to around 800,000 now. Jon Lascher, one of the equipment procurement managers for the medical relief organization Partners in Health, is not surprised that two very different pictures exist of Haiti a year later. “It’s a very complex situation,” he told MTV News. “A year later there is no easy answer. … We are celebrating some of our small gains, but there has been progress made here and it’s interesting progress.” Lascher said there are still “thousands” of workers with a wide variety of nongovernmental organizations lending a hand on the island. As the work has shifted from emergency search and rescue to a more long-term development phase, questions are being asked about what more needs to be done to create self-sufficiency and stability in the shattered nation. For PIH, the first $8 million grant from the “Hope for Haiti” telethon was spent by June on emergency response, with $6 million going to the camps holding displaced Haitians, replacing their makeshift cardboard lean-tos with tents and more stable temporary shelters. PIH set up four medical clinics in these camps, the largest serving more than 51,000 people. While amputations and crushed limb injuries were the big concerns soon after the quake, Lascher said sanitation continues to be a major issue. “Now our biggest concern is clean water, sanitation. You have large groups of people living in very close quarters without sanitation, without clean water, largely without access to proper nutrition,” he said. “What you find, especially now with the cholera epidemic, is that you have huge pockets of the population that are much more at risk for cholera and other diseases than they would have been before the earthquake.” PIH’s staff in the country, many of whom were already there before the quake working on providing health care to Haitians, has grown by more than 1,000 since January to over 5,000, and Lascher said the organization is doing work it’s never done before on the island. In addition to its presence in the capital, where it had not worked before, PIH has set up three clinics in camps and set up a home for physically and mentally disabled children. It is also in the midst of building a 320-bed teaching hospital. It’s a huge job, and Lascher knows that he will spend many more months and years attending to the needs of the island’s people. But he’s got reason to hope that the world won’t abandon Haiti. “We’ve got an incredible group of committed donors and supporters that are still interested in Haiti and still concerned and helping us accomplish the work that we set forth,” he said. “Of course, we are still urging people to stay involved. The work here is far from over. There is so much more that needs to be done.” Related Videos Crisis In Haiti Making Progress In Haiti SuChin Pak Visits Haiti

Among Britney Spears Singles, Where Does ‘Hold It Against Me’ Rank?

‘It’s going to stick, but it doesn’t have that little pixie dust that makes a really magical Britney song,’ one expert says. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi Britney Spears in “Toxic” Photo: Jive Britney Spears got grimy on her newest single, “Hold It Against Me,” a Dr. Luke/ Max Martin-produced thrashing club tune about lusting on the dance floor. It serves as the lead single from Brit’s March album , and it follows in the tradition of other Brit lead singles like ” … Baby One More Time,” “Oops! … I Did It Again” and “Womanizer,” which had Britney-philes (and even some Britney haters) on the dance floor. But how does the track stack up against previous Britney singles? MTV News caught up with some Spears scholars to get their thoughts. “I would probably [rank this] less on the ‘Oops!’/’Toxic’ level and more on the ‘Womanizer’ [level], where it’s that thing where it’s a really repetitive chorus that you could fit on a fortune cookie,” Entertainment Weekly music critic Leah Greenblatt told MTV News. “Two weeks later, you’re, like, dreaming that song and singing it in the shower and hating yourself for singing it through your commute, so I think it’s kind of insidious and it’s going to stick, but it doesn’t have that little pixie dust that makes a really magical Britney song.” Perez Hilton seemed to feel similarly about the song, admitting that he likes the direction this track takes compared to the work she’s put out on her last few records. “I think ‘Hold It Against Me’ is definitely better than a lot of things she’s done in the past, but not quite as good as ‘Toxic.’ I like ‘Hold It Against Me’ better than ‘Womanizer,’ but not as much as ‘Circus.’ “I don’t think is revolutionary,” he continued. “It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s a fun track. It’s a great setup single to remind everybody ‘Britney’s back.’ This is Britney’s ‘pay attention to me’ track.” MTV News’ very own Jim Cantiello said the song certainly isn’t ” … Baby One More Time,” but it’s also not “3,” and that’s good with him. “Do I think it’s better than ‘Womanizer’ and ‘3’? Hell yes! … To me, it sounds very much like Britney,” he explained. “Her voice is back, but it still has that dirty, filthy dance sound that I loved on Blackout. ” But what do you think of “Hold It Against Me”? Lily Collins Feels The ‘Momentum’ Going Into 2011

With roles in ‘Abduction,’ ‘Priest’ and ‘City of Bones,’ the actress is one of MTV News’ 11 for ’11. By Eric Ditzian Lily Collins Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic There was a time, not long ago, when Lily Collins was known — if she was known at all — as the daughter of a famous rock star, appearing in the pages of fashion magazines and at haute-couture-resplendent debutante balls. Her story could have stayed on such a track, another pretty face with an illustrious pedigree, fame born simply of fame instead of accomplishment. But that’s not how Collins’ story will be told. Rather, it’ll begin something like this: The daughter of Genesis rocker Phil Collins, she won a small role as Sandra Bullock’s daughter in “The Blind Side,” a film that could have been reasonably expected to fade into obscurity had filmmakers not nailed a pitch-perfect tone of inspirational Hollywood drama rather than one of heartstring-tugging schmaltz. The Oscar-winning blockbuster lead to Collins’ scoring the female lead in “Abduction,” in which she plays the love interest of “Twilight” hunk Taylor Lautner. The thriller hits theaters in September, and its highly anticipated release among the Twi-set would already qualify Collins as an actress to watch in 2011. But she also stars in the supernatural horror flick, “Priest,” and just won the coveted role of Clary Fray in the upcoming adaptation of “City of Bones,” the first book in Cassandra Clare’s “Mortal Instruments” series. With all these projects in the pipeline, Collins was an obvious pick as one of MTV News’ 11 for ’11. The 21-year-old, who speaks with a poise and confidence that belie her years, called us up recently to chat about dealing with her newfound fame, working with Lautner and how she landed the “Mortal Instruments” gig. MTV : 2011 is shaping up to be a big year for you, coming off “The Blind Side,” with a bunch of prominent roles this year and some new projects coming down the line. Does 2011 feel like it’s going to be a momentous year? Lily Collins : It really does. Everything for me has happened so quickly. I finished shooting “The Blind Side” not this past June, but the June before, and all of sudden up to now, it seems like it’s gone from zero to 60 for me. I feel so fortunate to be able to say that, because a lot of my friends aren’t working, especially since fewer films are being made now and there’s more competition. Right before Christmas, I found out I was cast as Clary in “Mortal Instruments,” so it was the best early Christmas present ever. So to know that I’m starting off 2011 with that project to film, and also having two other ones coming out, it’s a position I never thought I’d see myself in. I feel the momentum. MTV : Has it been a difficult transition, with the increased attention on your private life as well as your professional life? Collins : I grew up with my dad going through all that. I grew up understanding the pros and cons of what you’re getting into and knowing what comes with your job. I like to keep my private life private, and then work is work. I feel so far I’ve had a really good balance with that. So far I’m having fun, which is why I’m doing this. I enjoy the craft. I hope that never goes away. I don’t like reading things that people say on the Internet because I know so much of it is not true. I don’t want to waste my time worrying about what other people are thinking. I just want to focus on being able to do cool projects. MTV : So let’s talk about some of these cool projects you have coming up. “Abduction,” first off. Have you seen any finished footage? Collins : I have seen footage. [Director] John Singleton would shoot scenes and was really open to showing us different takes and if we wanted to see different angles. We had instantaneous feedback. And I have seen cuts here and there of stuff. Nothing like a final edit, but I have seen bits and pieces. I’m extremely proud. This was my biggest role to date. Of course I was nervous. Especially because there was so much action and all those stunts and I’m trying not to fall when I’m going through rivers at 4:30 in the morning. There was so much going on, and every single emotion you can think of we had to go through in the span of 30 seconds because so much happens too quickly. From what I’ve seen, I’m thrilled. When it comes to the work, I’m excited to see what people think. When it comes to the private life, that’s when I don’t pay attention. MTV : Was there one action scene with you and Taylor that was particularly challenging? Collins : At one point we’re running around, trying to escape in the forest, and there’s a giant hill that we had to run down, and it felt like a 90-degree angle. John wanted me to fall at a planned moment, but it was so steep, and we were running at high speeds, I would just fall anyway. I had to practice falling, but look like I was falling on purpose. Also, there was a fight scene where I just get beaten up. It was in a very confined space and the choreography was very challenging because you can’t be knocking into the camera. “Priest” had a lot of action, and I had to do fight training as well. MTV : Suddenly you’ve become an action hero … Collins : I know! In “Priest,” I don’t even look like myself because I have bright red hair and I’m in the same outfit the whole movie, because I’m kidnapped, so I’m dirty the whole time. I was in the desert putting dirt in my hair to make sure I look distressed and downtrodden. But it was fun because I’m jumping off trains and setting people on fire and getting into knife fights. MTV : Let’s talk about “Mortal Instruments.” Collins : That is going to be a whole new world for me. When I found out I was cast, I found out that people were tweeting about me getting cast as their heroine. I know that I’m playing a character in a book that is very popular, but I forget that books have so many fans, that if they don’t agree with the casting, it could go terribly wrong. I was so grateful that all these people were tweeting like, “Oh, we’re so excited. We totally see her as Clary, and we can’t wait to see what she’ll do.” I don’t know what I would have done if people responded negatively. MTV : Tell me about the audition process. Collins : Actually, this was the first time I actually didn’t audition. They offered me the role. I had just done “Priest,” which is from Screen Gems and directed by Scott Stewart, and this project is being directed by Scott Stewart at Screen Gems. So the role I did in “Priest,” if the movie does well and goes to a sequel, there are many of that character’s traits that I can also find in Clary. I guess they felt passionate that they saw certain characteristics as well, and they felt confident and really believed in me. I’m in still in awe. When I got that call, I was like, “Wait, are you talking about an audition?” MTV : Is that the next thing you’re filming? Collins : Yeah, I’m supposed to start this in early April. There are other things we’re in talks for, but that’s my next big project. MTV : Of course, first you guys have to cast Jace Wayland? Do you have anyone in mind for the part? Collins : Jace is an interesting one. He’s incredibly charming. He’s savvy in that he knows he’s charming and he works that charm, and he knows he’s attractive and can work his way into any situation. But at the same time, he does have insecurities. A lot of actors may not want to show a side of themselves being insecure. That’s what Jace does, and I feel a lot of people can relate to him. A lot of guys do feel insecure, but don’t want to admit it. A lot of the fans has been tweeting that [they want] Alex Pettyfer . I don’t know the process. MTV : Do you think he’d be a good fit? Collins : Yeah! He’s also going to have a great 2011. The fans of a series like this have such a strong opinion on who they feel would be great as a character, and I feel that’s very backed up because they know the characters in and out. I trust a lot of the fans in their opinions. I don’t know if there are going to be auditions or anything. I’ve heard Logan Lerman thrown out for Simon. These are from fans, and I’m excited to see their points-of-view. I’ve also heard about actors I may never have heard of, because they’re more on the independent side. That brings a whole other thing, because an unknown doesn’t bring in a whole lot of background. You don’t want a new character like this to have people think, “Oh, they’ve done that already,” or, “I can only see them as this kind of character.” So I hear that and go, “Wow, maybe an unknown could bring more to this role.” Hey, I was an unknown not too long ago, and I was like, “Let me do it! I can prove it to you!” Check out MTV News’ 11 for ’11 — actors, musicians and TV stars who are about to have a huge year — all week long. Related Videos MTV News’ 11 for ’11

James Franco, Asked About Gay Roles, Says ‘Maybe I’m Just Gay’

‘There are lots of reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to have sex with guys,’ actor says. By Gil Kaufman James Franco Photo: Getty Images They’re the two questions actor James Franco hears almost every time he sits down for an interview: “Are you gay?” and “are you stoned?” The multi-hyphenate, perpetually heavy-lidded actor (who, for the record, denies that he’s a smoker) has aroused curiosity about his sexuality by playing a number of high-profile gay parts in movies such as “Milk,” “Howl” and his upcoming “The Broken Tower.” Franco, who has been in a relationship with actress Ahna O’Reilly for more than five years, has avoided the definitive denial/confirmation that other high-profile celebrities have made in the past when questioned about their sexual preferences. In a recent Entertainment Weekly cover story, though, he tackled the issue head-on and provided, well, clarity of a sort. “It’s funny because the way that kind of stuff is talked about on blogs is so black-and-white,” Franco said. “It’s all cut-and-dry identity politics. ‘Is he straight or is he gay?’ Or, ‘This is your third gay movie — come out already!’ And all based on gay or straight, based on the idea that your object of affection decides your sexuality.” The “127 Hours” star has spurred further talk about his bedroom politics with news that he’s planning to write the screenplay and direct a biopic about gay “Rebel Without a Cause” actor Sal Mineo. “There are lots of other reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to go out and have sex with guys,” he said about why he chooses the roles he does and why gay parts are often much meatier than other ones he’s offered. “I mean, I’ve played a gay man who’s living in the ’60s and ’70s, a gay man who we depicted in the ’50s, and one being in the ’20s. And those were all periods when to be gay, at least being gay in public, was much more difficult. Part of what I’m interested in is how these people who were living anti-normative lifestyles contended with opposition.” But, ever the provocateur, the sometime “General Hospital” guest star, painter, author and Ph.D. student ended the interview with another explanation for why he might be choosing all these homosexual roles. “You know what, maybe I’m just gay.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Britney Spears’ New Single Is A ‘Surefire Hit,’ Perez Hilton Says

Ryan Seacrest, who has heard the final cut of ‘Hold It Against Me,’ also gives the tune his seal of approval. By Jocelyn Vena Perez Hilton Photo: Frazer Harrison/ WireImage The demo for Britney Spears’ new single, “Hold It Against Me,” that hit the Web on Thursday is catching people’s attention, and it seems clear that the pop star wants everyone to hit the dance floor and party. The unfinished track, which feature the vocals of songwriter Bonnie McKee rather than Brit herself, is a dirty, grinding club banger with pulsing beats and lustful lyrics. The track already has the media talking. “With her vocals on that it’s going to be an undeniable, surefire hit,” Perez Hilton told MTV News . “I loved it. My own critique is that the demo sounds a little too much like Ke$ha. I hope that the finished song feels like a Britney song. Beside that it’s still to me a hit song.” Perez’s Ke$ha comparison likely can be attributed to the work of Dr. Luke. And the gossip guru’s further evaluation of the tune draws parallels to another Luke production. “It’s not inspired. It’s not groundbreaking,” Perez explains, noting that this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially considering he’s only heard the demo. “It’s like Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’; I think this is the equivalent.” Perez isn’t the only one giving “Hold It Against Me” his seal of approval. Ryan Seacrest revealed that Britney’s managers, Larry Rudolf and Adam Leber, played him the finished version of the track , and he insisted that if fans are stoked about the demo, then they should just be over the moon about the final cut. “@BritneySpears just sent me ‘Hold It Against Me.’ WOW. The demo doesn’t even compare!” he wrote on Twitter . Seacrest added that Britney’s video for the tune is set to shoot in two weeks, after a month of rehearsals, noting that it’s “gonna be major.” He also reported that Rudolf and Leber played him another track off the singer’s March release, “I I I Wanna Go,” but gave little details about the song besides describing it as a “powerhouse single.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Britney Spears Related Artists Britney Spears
