U.S. Oil Reponse is literally "Sketchy"!

” It could be one of the sloppiest engineering plans the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has ever seen—a hand-drawn plan illustrating how engineers would fill in a channel in Dauphin Island to prevent oil from reaching sensitive wetlands. The corps posted the permit application and asked for comment from agencies and public in just a few hours. The project could be a good idea, scientists say, but it's hard to tell given the rough plans, and it's equally hard to have confidence in such a quick evaluation. “It's very symptomatic of this whole episode,” says George Crozier of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, referring to the Deepwater Horizon leak. “There is a lot of panic and uncertainty.” But federal agencies evaluating the project say they have enough expertise to evaluate the risk of problems, such as whether the project might cause erosion problems or harm endangered species. Over the last decade, hurricanes have cut a wide channel through Dauphin Island, a 23-kilometer-long barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. After the Deepwater Horizon accident, the Dauphin Island Restoration Task Force and other groups asked the Governor of Alabama to fill in the channel so that oil can't pass through and enter Mississippi Sound. Much about the proposal remains unclear. The official applicant for the USACE permit to fill the gap is BP, which did not return calls. Observers suspect that the Governor's office asked the Alabama Department of Environmental Management to draft the permit application, but ADEM spokesperson Scott Hughes could not confirm this. “The Department's role is to ensure that any permit issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is consistent with the requirements of Alabama's coastal program,” he writes in an e-mail. Another mystery is who created the drawings. One of them, simply initialed “C.J.”, has a Post-it note covering up letterhead for Jordan Pile Driving in Mobile, Alabama. D. S. Jordan, the chairperson of the company, says he received drawings from Thompson Engineering in Mobile. The project manager there couldn't be reached. The plans first became public on 27 May, when USACE posted them on its Web site in the morning. One option described in the proposal is to block the 2.2-kilometer-wide channel with sheet piling. The other option is to drop in 76,000 cubic meters of rock. Either measure would be removed within a year. USACE asked for comments on two options by 3 p.m. the same day. Coastal geologist Robert Young of Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina, says he was stunned by the short deadline. Young, who says he often comments on permit applications for coastal engineering projects, only came across the proposal later that evening. “This makes me wonder how many of these emergency permits are out there that I haven't seen.” Young and other experts were also flabbergasted by the rough plans. “They're done by hand on a piece of notebook paper. I've never seen anything like this in my life.” Young says it's difficult to tell from the drawings exactly what the consequences of filling the channel might be. And then there's the vague note on the map indicating “various buried pipelines.” http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2010/06/emergency-oil-spill-responseho… added by: DeliaTheArtist

I.B.M. and the holocaust … more proof that corporations will kill you.

You can find a ton of info online to back up the validity of this story, but I posted a link from cbs because some folks need to hear it from a source they “trust”? As usual, this corporate news piece only tells half the story. Bottom line I.B.M. created the computer system that helped the nazi's basically keep inventory of the Jewish people. The famous tattoos you see on Jews forearms are linked to a punch card system that allowed hitler to identify and assign Jews for either work duties or death. My summary may be oversimplified, but the facts are there for you to search out. http://www.ibmandtheholocaust.com/ added by: DefKid

Local CBS Staff Join Hollywood Celebs in ‘The Dream Lives On’ Boston Pops Tribute to Kennedys

Less than an hour before CBS’s Craig Ferguson-hosted 10 PM EDT “ Boston Pops Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular” national broadcast on Sunday night, local anchors Jack Williams and Lisa Hughes from Boston’s CBS-owned television station , along with a couple of local actors, took to the stage to narrate the music-accompanied “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers.” ( Video: downloadable from NB twenty second wmv clip of Williams and Hughes in action.) Introducing the 20-minute production carried by WBZ-TV channel 4 in Boston in its 8-10 PM EDT coverage, Pops conductor Keith Lockhart ludicrously insisted it was “not political” — even though it takes its name from Ted Kennedy’s very political 2008 Democratic convention speech aimed at motivating Democrats to push for left-wing policies, starting with nationalized health care, and culminates by quoting the call to arms in that address: “If we set our compass true, we will reach our destination. The work begins anew, the hope rises again and the dream lives on!” That line was read by actor Morgan Freeman Jr. in the original May 18 production at Boston’s Symphony Hall ( mov video excerpt ) and coinciding with the concert at Boston’s Hatch Shell along the Charles River, the Pops trumpeted : On July 4, the Boston Pops will release a CD featuring the live recording of the world premiere performances of “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers,” which took place at Symphony Hall May 18 & 19 with guest narrators Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, and Cherry Jones… In liner notes for the CD (PDF) , composer Peter Boyer expressed a “deep admiration for the Kennedys” and related: [I]t was not until I began to research his life for this project that I became more fully aware of the remarkable scope of his legislative achievements , over more than four decades. For me, the most inspiring aspects of the Kennedy brothers’ legacy are a commitment to idealism, and a sense of enduring optimism for our nation and for mankind. Thus the title of the work, The Dream Lives On, is taken from one of Ted Kennedy’s last public speeches, at the Democratic National Convention in 2008. My May 16 NewsBusters post, “ Leading Actors Lend Their Voices to Boston Pops’ Tribute to the Kennedy Brothers, ” described: A production which “combines quotes from speeches by the Kennedy brothers with original text and video, accompanied by a dramatic orchestral and choral score” so it “pays tribute to the towering achievements and singular spirit epitomized by the Kennedy brothers – the call to public service, drive for social change, and the legacy of optimism for America’s future.”… A promotional video features “Tony Award-winning lyricist Lynn Ahrens” relating the lyrics she created for the concert: Now on the rain-slicked streets of Boston and across the wind-swept Cape Code sea, over the din of Washington’s halls and down the halls of history, their passionate words can still be heard, their highest ideals a clarion call; these three American brothers inspiring the best in us all. More celebrity performances are to come: Actor Alec Baldwin will take the lead for a July 18 performance at Tanglewood and actor Chris Cooper will narrate a Hyannis Village Green event on August 1.

A Short Story from the Adventures of an Atheist at a Christian High School

Here's just one story of the many stories that I've written in the past year documenting my experience as an Atheist student at a Christian high school in, of course, Texas. More information on this little project of mine is written after the story. I watched, bemused, as Mrs. Kooch set two handfuls of fossils down on a display table at the head of the classroom and went to retrieve more from the classroom’s storage cabinet. That day, we were to examine fossils which, understandably, had me quite surprised. I would’ve thought that fossils would have been, at the very least, carefully omitted from conversation and curriculum. Mrs. Kooch had, by this time, gathered two dozen fossils and had neatly aligned them on the table top. Seemingly satisfied with her work, she stepped back and adjusted the bright green fanny pack which hung about her waist. Placing her hands upon her hips, she announced to the class in a voice accented with southern drawl, “Today, we’ll be havin’ a look-see at these fossils.” She ran her candy apple red fingernails through her curly blonde hair and fixed a smile upon her face. “But first,” she continued as she began to survey her class, her nose raised at an unfriendly level, “we’ll pray that God will bless this class.” Fifteen pairs of eyes closed instantaneously and fifteen out of the sixteen heads occupying the room were bowed. The sudden, synchronized movement caused me to wake with a start from the early morning stupor I had been enjoying. With sleep now out of the question, I took the time to watch my classmates and to enjoy the amusing oxymorons that had presented themselves that morning. Christian science teachers. Atheists attending Christian schools. Praying to the god of the New and Old Testament that a lesson on fossils would be successful. The prayer had ended and Mrs. Kooch began the discussion by asking, “Does anyone have any questions about these fossils?” “I do.” I said, being the first to raise my hand. “How old are these fossils?” “Aha, good question, dear.” she exclaimed warmly, picking up a large chunk of amber containing various insects, lifting it to an eye adorned with garish navy blue eye shadow and examining it closely. “Some of these fossils are as old as five thousand years old!” Oh, no. Had I heard her correctly? “How old?” I asked, sounding worried. “Five thousand years.” she repeated, growing slightly impatient. “It has to be said,” I thought. “Here goes.” “That’s ridiculous. These are fossilized prehistoric creatures! Their age is in the millions, not thousands.” I had barely finished saying this when Mrs. Kooch threw her head back and unleashed a shrill, panic-filled giggle. “But that’s impossible, the Bible says the world is six thousand years old and that means the world is six thousand years old! Nothing can be older than that except for Almighty God.” She rambled in an oddly reassuring voice. “But to suggest,” I continued levelly, “that the world began at about the same time that the Sumerians invented glue would be kind of silly, don’t you think? I mean, especially when you’re holding the evidence in your hand.” I heard the amber clatter back to the table, accompanied by the presumably imagined sound of a tea kettle full of boiling water. She began to slowly approach my desk with her hands once again resting upon her hips. She came to a halt directly in front of my desk and peered down her nose at me with a most peculiar expression in her eyes. I waited for her to speak, half-expecting a barrage of profanities to erupt from her pursed lips. Nothing, only silence. She began to turn a brighter shade of pink as each noiseless moment passed. The entire class seemed to be holding their breath, anxious to see what was in store for me. Interesting events were rare at the small, unremarkable private school, and with considerable shock they watched as an event of the “interesting” genre unraveled before their eyes. Wearing a quizzical look on my face, I continued to meet her stare, which appeared to be directed through my skull and into some macabre alternate dimension. Nothing continued to happen as she stood there considering me, her lip curling ever so slightly. Just as it became unbearable, the silence was broken when her phone began to ring and the tune entitled “Onward Christian Soldiers” pervaded the classroom’s stagnant air. Apparently, she at first intended to ignore the phone’s ironically cheerful ringtone and let it just go on ringing. “Oh, I love this song!” I exclaimed rapturously as I began to enthusiastically pantomime conducting an orchestra to the ringtone’s electronic beat. Mrs. Kooch’s carefully composed mask of solemnity shattered to reveal a face of flabbergasted revulsion. She was now visibly desperate to regain her until-recently unquestioned authority over this blasphemer, now gesticulating wildly before her. She knew what she must do to end this unwelcomed fun. She hastily sculpted her features into a toothy and strained grin which eventually collapsed and came to resemble a snarl. She retrieved her phone, violently jabbed its touch screen with her gnarled index finger, and flung it back into the neon green fanny pack around her waist without once interrupting her malevolent gaze upon me. My hands came to an abrupt stop as the music ended and I remember feeling a brief, but nevertheless overwhelming, wave of pity for her poor cell phone wash over me. My attention was promptly redirected to the rows of teeth that Mrs. Kooch was now baring at me. “Don’t…you…dare,” she growled, leaning nearer and nearer to me with each syllable, “question my God and his son, Jesus Christ! OR THE HOLY SPIRIT!” Her voice had gradually risen into a blood-curdling shriek. She seemed to right herself and to begin to slowly lean away from me until I bewilderedly replied, “But, really, I was only stating a fact, I never actually questioned –“ “Enough! Or you’ll find yourself cleaning the lunch tables for the rest of this year, startin’ today! And, don’t play dumb even though I’d bet that playin’ dumb ain’t hard for people like you.” She smirked a particularly nasty smirk and turned slightly towards the class, anticipating a chorus of laughter to erupt from the rest of her students. Silence resounded until a boy in the back of the classroom gave a thunderous sneeze and went to find a tissue. Quiet blessings were uttered by a few people. The sneezing boy thanked them. Looking slightly disconcerted, Mrs. Kooch turned back to me and grunted, “Where d’you go to church? I’mma have to have a talk with your pastor.” “Nowhere.” I answered curtly, with a nod. Mrs. Kooch’s dull gray eyes sparkled with what was indubitably undiluted hatred and she turned away and briskly strode toward her desk without speaking another word. It was only until after she had returned to her desk that I was able to lower my right eyebrow to be nearly level with my left one. Mrs. Kooch proceeded to make the decision to abandon the fossil discussion and instead distributed a class syllabus amongst the students. However, my mind was elsewhere. What is to be my fate this year? Am I to be crucified at the hands of this malevolent teacher? Stoned to death? Sacrificed on a stone altar to the Abrahamic god? I stole a glance towards Mrs. Kooch, seated at her desk across the windowless classroom. She had just commanded her students to read and reread her syllabus in silence, having put especial emphasis on the “silence” part. In the meantime, she was busying herself by wringing her hands and scowling fiercely at the fossils still lined up on the table. Note: The fossils were never spoken of or seen again for the entire year. They were, presumably, gathered up and carefully stowed away by Mrs. Kooch. However, I hold an alternate theory that some divine force destroyed the fossils in order to keep that pesky doubt down to a minimum. added by: EtVoila

Scarborough: POTUS Entitled to ‘Happy Place’ But Boehner Has Bad Work Ethic

On day 72 of the continued Gulf of Mexico oil spill, “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough decided to open the show by continuing to bash Minority Leader John Boehner’s work ethic. This assault comes just ten days after his assertion that he wants his leader to have a “happy place to go to” and there is no problem with, “the president golfing every Sunday.” The former Republican congressman, who quit his job, ridiculed Boehner, saying “everybody on Capitol Hill knows about John Boehner, he’s not exactly the hardest worker in the world. He’s a guy that likes golf, and he’s a guy that likes, you know, socializing.” Scarborough made sure to address that even though he doesn’t know John Boehner personally, he was just “reporting” what he heard on the Hill. To Scarborough this analysis was imperative because, “If you’re going to bend history, if you’re going to pick up 40, 45 seats, it’s a 24/7 job.” So, let me get Scarborough’s math straight. Being the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, a position of somewhat limited power, is a 24/7 job. But, the position of President of the United States, the “Leader of the Free Word,” is about a 6 day a week job and requires a “happy place to go to?”

How Did Eminem’s Recovery Have Such A Big Debut?

Rapper’s more mature style appears to have appealed to wide audience, experts say. By Gil Kaufman Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope At this point, we’re used to Eminem debuting at #1 . After all, he’s done it six times in a row, including two records that sold more than 1 million copies in their first week on the charts. But following last year’s comeback album, Relapse, which sold nearly 2 million copies despite Em admitting that it was not his finest hour , it wasn’t a lock that Recovery would be greeted with the same instant success as the Detroit rapper’s previous work. There were the fans who were turned off by the weird accents he adopted on Relapse, the dark, gory vibe of the campaign promoting that album and the overall grim nature of the music, not to mention the lack of a breakout, signature hit. And while Relapse did very solid business its first week out, with sales topping 608,000, even some experts were surprised when Recovery snagged the year’s highest debut to date , with sales of 741,000 after initial projections had it in the 500,00-600,000 range. In a music industry starved for hits, Recovery became only the third album since 2008 to debut with more than 700,000 copies sold. So how did Eminem do it again? Chalk it up to a killer first single, some clever promotional gimmicks, more visibility for the rapper and a mature attitude that may have broadened his fanbase after a dozen years in the game. “I think for him, [ Relapse ] didn’t connect with his fans the way he wanted it to, so he wasn’t happy with that,” Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, told The Detroit News on Tuesday. ” Recovery offers more of an emotional connection for listeners. … I think Em made the kind of album that people were waiting for with Recovery. ” From a jokey viral campaign featuring the ShamWow guy appearances on “The Soup,” “The Late Show With David Letterman,” the BET Awards and “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” and a one-page profile in the New York Times Sunday magazine , in which he came out in favor of gay marriage, Eminem has done more press and appearances in the past month for the new album than he did for almost the entire Relapse cycle. The heightened exposure from the typically reclusive rapper has clearly helped keep his name in the news and might have boosted sales. “We sold a ton more of it than the last time,” said Carl Mello, director of purchasing for the 28-store Newbury Comics chain of record stores. “Which is always a surprise in these days, with trends being the way they are.” Mello chalked the big first week up to more crossover airplay and the album’s first single, “Not Afraid,” which he thinks brought more people into the store to buy the album. “On the last one, he would have a single and it would go top five and then disappear. On this one, they actually played it on the radio and there was definitely some anticipation for it.” Mello said the album did much better than he expected in the Newbury stores and had the kind of crossover appeal the rapper hasn’t shown since his heyday in the early 2000s. The album didn’t appear to be affected by leaking two weeks early and, as the News noted, it was the first of Em’s records not to announce itself with a pop-culture-skewering first single like “My Name Is,” “The Real Slim Shady,” “Just Lose It” and “We Made You.” As he typically does, Em offered cryptic details at first about the disc, tweeting in mid-April that he’d tossed the planned Relapse 2 album to work on a new disc. “Not Afraid” hit radio two weeks later and debuted at #1, and within weeks, the album’s cover leaked out , generating more buzz. The grimier “Won’t Back Down” leaked out earlier this month and was used in commercials for the shooter video game “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” and the second official single, the Rihanna-assisted ballad “Love the Way You Lie,” has already hit #1 on the iTunes singles chart, with a video on the way. By going with the pensive, midtempo “Not Afraid” — a serious-minded track in which Marshall Mathers, now 37, ponders his recent problems and tries to connect with fans who have also lived through hard times — as the first single, Entertainment Weekly correspondent Simon Vozick-Levinson said the rapper was signaling he’d turned a corner. While the CD was expected to be big, at a time when even some major career stars are struggling to follow up hit albums (Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, Miley Cyrus), the more robust promotional push and the crucial first single are major factors. “When he put out the last album, people were just getting used to him being back after four or five years away, and he didn’t do many interviews or appearances,” Vozick-Levinson said. “But now he’s out front, doing late-night talk shows and reminding people that he has a new album. He’s put the work in, and it’s paid off. “But he also picked the right first single,” he added. “Last time he came back with singles that didn’t connect with people, and there was no clear idea of why he was back and what he was doing with his career. ‘Not Afraid’ was a smart choice, because it had the message that he’s older and wiser, that he’s grown up with his audience and he’s more mature than in the past.” And while he’s not sure the rest of the album lives up to that standard, Vozick-Levinson said the song clearly connected with Em’s audience, and the not-so-hidden double meaning of the album title was perfect for these tenuous times. “He sent a message that he’s connected with the audience in the way it is packaged too. Recovery has a double meaning about his own sobriety and his own recovery and also about the economic climate. People want to believe in the idea of things getting better and making a fresh start.” Eschewing the traditional violent, sophomoric between-song skits, tapping major stars like Pink and Rihanna and opening up his stable of producers after years of relying on mentor Dr. Dre has also helped Eminem connect to a new generation of hip-hop fans who are used to hearing MCs like Drake and B.o.B chant and sing their choruses in between bars. Though he can’t singlehandedly save the music biz, Vozick-Levinson said what’s good for Eminem is ultimately good for an industry struggling to turn around a nearly decade-long slide in album sales. “You can’t transfer his success to other artists, because he’s always been so unique,” he said. “But it’s good news for the industry that something like this can still happen and blockbuster sales and career artists still exist.” Were you surprised by Eminem’s blockbuster debut? Eclipse Review: The Best Twilight Film Yet!

While The Twilight Saga may boast an impressive, deep cast, let’s face it: this franchise is all about its three main stars. For that reason, New Moon fell a bit flat, as Robert Pattinson scarcely appeared as Edward and we were left with too much of Bella sitting around and simply pondering her life. Granted, Taylor Lautner took his shirt off a lot, but here’s the great news about Eclipse : Jacob is once again topless most of the time – but he isn’t the only one heating up the screen. Having been treated to a screening of Eclipse , we can confirm: it’s by far the most action-packed of all three Twilight films, and it’s also the best. Here’s why: Bella’s internal conflict has external consequences . Jacob or Edward? Edward or Jacob? This love triangle is at the forefront of the film, but it’s placed against the backdrop of a centuries-old feud between werewolves and vampires. This is far more than typical teenage angst; this is Bella needing to make a decision, the ramifications of which will impact all the lives around her. When Jacob and Edward agree to an alliance in order to protect the girl they love, even men in the audience might stand up and cheer. It’s exciting, selfless stuff. The movie has a sense of humor . Early on, Edward says of Jacob: “Doesn’t he own a shirt?” It’s a cute, light-hearted wink at the audience and the pop culture phenomenon the franchise has become. Jacob vs. Edward . Choosing a Team in this rivalry is a necessity for all fans, and Eclipse sets up more of a dichotomy than ever before. At one point, Bella complains that Edward won’t “unzip before marriage.” Meanwhile, Jacob simply oozes sweat and sex appeal. The former is old school, the latter… well, he’s ready to pounce. These differences make Bella’s dilemma all the more stark, which makes it that much more interesting to watch. The tent scene . Trust us. The flashbacks . Through a series of character flashbacks, we learn how multiple Cullens earned their fangs. Jasper’s tale of being a Confederate Major is especially gripping. Great special effects . The movie climaxes with a showdown between wolves and vampires (and one human, of course) that may not be at the level of Avatar , but it makes tremendous use of CGI. Overall, the action is on par with many summer popcorn flicks. In the end, it’s easy to understand why the Twilight Saga appeals to teenage girls everywhere: two gorgeous guys aren’t just in love with Bella, they are willing to do absolutely anything for her. It’s the stuff we all dream about. But Eclipse adds action, adventure and history to that simple storyline. It combines the best elements of the first two films and we strongly recommend it to all readers.
