Source: Collier Schorr / Collier Schorr / T Magazine Fans can stop speculating and confidently rejoice in Solange returning to music. She is dropping a follow up to her A Seat At The Table this week. As Vulture noted the singer is releasing a new album any day now as per her recent interview in New York Times’ T Magazine . According to the lengthy feature, the new project will “likely arrive into the world fully formed at some mysterious and unexpected moment”. Her description of the direction is just as complex. “There is a lot of jazz at the core. But with electronic and hip-hop drum and bass because I want it to bang and make your trunk rattle” she explains. Source: Collier Schorr / Collier Schorr / T Magazine The “Cranes In The Sky” singer also detailed how she is trying to take a step back from being the protagonist of her material. “I realize how much wider, figuratively and literally, my work could be if I took myself away as subject.” Her unique and very lengthy recording process is also revealed. “I like to be able to tell the story in 13 different ways, then I like to edit.” The Times reports that each song for A Seat At The Table were all 15 minutes or longer and then she trimmed them down. Along with lightly touching on the yet to be named LP she also discussed her creative aspirations from as a child (“My dream was to go to Juilliard”) and shares how even with her popularity she still gets nervous about releasing her projects (“I have this fear living in my body about releasing work”). Source: FOX / Getty Tonight’s episode of Empire picks up with Cookie reading all the trolly headlines about the Lyon Family’s money woes to Jamal and Hakeem. She is pissed, especially because Lucious blew up their spot. It’s just another reminder that they have some work to do. Things get worse when they find out that Andre isn’t coming home today (Lucious went to pick him up and got let down). He’s in the hole due to that fight he had with the bully he has been beefing with. That situation is far from over and we’re not even sure when Dre is coming home, but the Lyon Family has to move forward. Lucious reveals that he found some new office space and he’s meeting with investors soon. They also want Hakeem and Jamal to sign with them, but they’re still signed to Empire so we all know that breaking those contracts are not going to be easy. It comes as no surprise when Hakeem and Jamal visit Kingsley at Empire and are met with contempt when they try to get out of their contracts. Kingsley mocks Hakeem’s bad lung (but Jamal has been working with him on figuring out new ways to breathe so this is going to get better) and reminds Jamal that he better turn in that album he owes or he’ll never release any music ever again. Things go even further downhill when Lucious’ money people decide not to loan him money after all. In related news, we find out that Candace convinced Cookie to buy a loft in SoHo a while back and to keep that information secret from Lucious. The point of purchasing the loft was to have some collateral in case Lucious ditched Cookie again. You know things were looking real shaky with Giuliana for a hot second. Welp, Candace is smart because now Cookie is going to put the loft up for sale. We all know that lofts in SoHo go for a grip. Lucious visits Thirsty’s office to see if he’ll join their new venture. He’s an ambulance chaser now and he’s doing well in business. He’s also giving Lucious the side eye because he hasn’t really heard from him in over a year yet here he is in his face, once again needing something. However, Thirsty used to come through in the clutch, for all of Lucious’ illicit activities, so surely he’ll be back… Right? RIGHT?! Part of Andre’s beef with the jail bully is that he has been harassing a kid named Quincy. We don’t know what Quincy did, but it’s obvious that Quincy belongs in college and that he’s smart and may even be in there on some numbers or tech related crime. Dre probably sees himself in Quincy and decides to protect him. That’s cool and all, but something about this seems strategic as well. Lucious confronts Kingsley at Empire because he has been playing games and even stole the office space that Lucious had been looking at. These people can’t do anything original, can they? Anyway, Kingsley kicks that bs about this just being about business, but Lucious is ready to take it to the streets. He even threatens him and says that if he keeps up this “business” strategy then he might meet his maker. Kingsley ain’t scared though. We know he has more tricks up his sleeves. Lucious and Cookie decide to turn their home into Empire headquarters since there’s no office space. Cookie’s sisters are on board helping the family business, so is Porsha. Thirsty decided to come back like we knew he would and Lucious is trying to get Becky to return too. That’s still up in the air but she is present for their first business event in their living room. Thirsty helped them land some new potential investors. One of the investors tries to be shady about the setup but Cookie shuts that down then Lucious reminds them that the greatest acts at Empire have all been Lyons, and he wants to demonstrate that. So, without further adieu, Jamal and Hakeem take the stage. Hakeem is obviously nervous about this, but it turns out that the work they’ve been doing with his breathing worked. The song is a hit and Hakeem is back rapping again. Tonight is mostly a success, except for the fact that Becky turned Lucious down, and she has every right because she’s potentially getting a promotion at Empire, something Lucious kept overlooking her for. Plus, the way Lucious is talking to her is all types of stupid so no one can blame her. Jamal turns in the music, including he and Hakeem’s new song, he created in to Kingsley. This should fulfill his contractual obligations to Empire. Kingsley likes the music and thinks he’s all set, but Jamal wants checks cut out to all of his family because every track samples something from past music contributed by a Lyon. Kingsely tries to get around this by claiming that samples can be stripped down but they cant according to Jamal’s soundtrack. Kingsley is tight and that’s when we see him telling his assistant to arrange a visit to a correctional facility. Speaking of, that bully inmate finally ends up getting killed while Andre is in the hole. Dre is obviously pleased with this news as this is all part of his plan. Then, we end the episode with Kingsley visiting, wait for it, Diana DuBois! The Lyon’s enemy is a friend of his. Hold on tight, because Dre will be out next week! T he Getty Institute is working to preserve rich and historic Black artwork. According to the New York Times , the Los Angeles-based institution announced the creation of a new program that is centered on research surrounding African American artists and their work. The Getty to Start a Research Center for African-American Art. We're honored to be a partner institution. https://t.co/GiKkZKzqDg — CAAM (@CAAMinLA) September 25, 2018 Dubbed the African American Art History Initiative, the research center will focus on acquiring pieces and spearheading research projects that will provide more context about artists connected to the African Diaspora, the news outlet writes. The institute will team up with museums and organizations to push the research forward. Amongst institutions that they will partner with include Spelman College, Art+Practice, the California African American Museum and the Studio Museum in Harlem. “The study of African American art history is fundamental to a comprehensive understanding of American art history. We aim to bring our resources, talents, and relationships together to promote advanced research in an area of American art that has been underfunded and under researched,” James Cuno , president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust said in a statement . The project has a budget of $5 million. One of the first acquisitions under the initiative is the work of assemblage artist Betye Saar . “Saar is one of the major African-American artists in the region, somebody whom artists like John Outterbridge and David Hammons look up to. And she was born in 1926, so to start with something this wide-ranging is wonderful,” historian and project consultant Kellie Jones told the news outlet. She also added that the collaborative aspect of the project will “help move important archives out into other facets of the contemporary art world, whether the classroom or the museum.” There has been an ongoing effort—especially on the West Coast—to preserve historic elements of Black culture. Earlier this year, the African American Museum & Library at Oakland received a grant that will allow them to digitize rare footage of protests that took place during the 60s and 70s. So far several celebrities have stepped up to help bring the vision for the August Wilson House to fruition. Amongst those who have donated to the project—that is being spearheaded by Washington—includes Tyler Perry , Oprah Winfrey , Shonda Rhimes , and Spike Lee . There was a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday. “I love August. He touches my soul, our souls. This is just like coming home to me. I feel so comfortable here,” Washington told the news outlet. “It starts with August and the wonderful people here and the commitment that we see today to this community, and I’m glad to be a part of that.” Wilson’s brother Richard Kittel says August would have been honored and humbled that his former house would be turned into a space to inspire playwrights, actors, and artists for generations to come. In 2015, Washington announced that he had landed a deal with HBO to produce nine of August Wilson’s plays for the cable network. “His stories are specifically African American stories, but the themes are universal,” Washington told the Hollywood Reporter . “He was just a bright, brilliant shining light who was here and then he was gone, but his work will live forever to be interpreted by actors and directors for as long as we’re here.” According to the Post-Gazette , the HBO project is still in the works and is slated to be released by 2020. As you’re no doubt aware, celebrities play the game of life by a different set of rules than the rest of us. Behavior that wouldn’t fly for a hot second in the world of plebes is not only condoned but celebrated when it’s perpetrated by an actor with a role in a corporate film franchise or one of the few recording artists that can still sell out a stadium. But if the #MeToo movement has taught us anything, it’s that even for the rich and powerful, there comes a time when society draws a line in the sand. Which is why the whole world is looking at Drake right now with a collective “bruh, WTF are you doing?” expression. As you may have heard, the rapper maintains a close friendship with Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown. Brown opened up about her close relationship with the 31-year-old rapper at the 2018 Emmys last week, and we imagine every single viewers’ face simultaneously contorted into a perfect replica of the “yikes” emoji. Millie Bobby Brown on Drake To be clear, Millie is in no way at fault here. We imagine most 14-year-olds would leap at the chance to befriend one of their favorite recording artists. It’s Drake — and to a slightly lesser extent, Millie’s parents — who are deserving of the hard side-eye here. In order to understand how creepy this is, you need only to strip Drizzy of his celebrity status and re-examine the situation as though he were just Some Dude. If you knew nothing about Drake other than the fact that he’s a 31-year-old man who’s in the habit of routinely texting a 14-year-old girl and telling her how much he misses her, whatever shred of sympathy you might have had for the rap world’s answer to Humbert Humbert would likely go right out the window. Like most celebrities, he gets a pass on certain actions that would get him rightly shunned from civilian society. Fortunately, in 2018, powerful men no longer get away with every kind of questionable behavior. We’re not saying Drake is as bad as the worst of the #MeToo offenders, but his image as the non-threatening nice guy of the hip hop world has taken quite a few hits in recent months. As you may recall, the summer of 2018 began with the revelation that Drake has a secret son , with whom he’s barely had any contact. Drake attempted a lame explanation as to why he’s been hiding his son from the world (he was actually hiding the world from his son , the rapper explained, in full earnest-Drizzy mode), but for the most part, the public wasn’t buying his victim routine. Shortly thereafter, we learned that Drake was dating an 18-year-old fan and aspiring model. Again, not illegal — but not the sort of thing that inspires much faith in the man’s character. Now, we have Drake’s relationship with Millie. Again, it’s possible that the rapper entered this situation with the best of intentions, but to say he’s handling it poorly at this point would be to massively understate the awkwardness of how this is all playing out. On social media, Brown has attempted to diffuse the situation (see above), while Drake has kept mum, thus leaving her to twist in the wind. We can only hope dude is quietly extricating himself from the situation and gently explaining to Millie his reasons for doing so. You’ve had a very rough year, Drizzy — time to start earning some redemption.
Actor Al Matthews, best known for his memorable role in the film Aliens , has died. The iconic actor had retired to Spain, which is where he passed away. He was 75. 75-year-old Al Matthews passed away at his home, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais . Matthews’ home was located in Orihuela Costa, in the Spanish Mediterranean province of Alicante. He had retired to Spain in 2005. Responders found Matthews when a neighbor called emergency services. An autopsy is expected for the late actor. Matthews is, of course, best known for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Apone in James Cameron’s 1986 classic, Aliens . In the science fiction film, he starred alongside living legend Sigourney Weaver. He delivered a truly famous line. “Alright sweethearts, what are you waiting for, breakfast in bed? A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm,” he said on screen. The quote continues: “Every meal’s a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I love the corps!” That may have been Matthews’ most famous role, but was far from the only one. In fact, he appeared in over 30 films. Matthews portrayed a fire chief in Superman III . He played General Tudor in the cult classic The Fifth Element . He also enjoyed success in the United Kingdom, where he had a role on the UK series, Grange Hill . And speaking of his work across the pond, in 1975, his song, “Fool,” reached #16 on the UK Singles chart. Despite his retirement, Matthews reprised his legendary role as Sgt. Apone in the 2013 video game, Aliens: Colonial Marines . Perhaps part of what made Matthews’ role in Aliens so iconic and powerful — aside from his acting skills — was that he had been a real life marine in Vietnam. “I spent six years in the United States Marine Corps;” Matthews shared on his personal website. “I hold thirteen combat awards and decorations, including two purple hearts.” He reveals: “I was the first black Marine in the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam to be meritoriously promoted to the rank of sergeant.” That is one hell of an achievement. His website blurb concludes: “I served with Kilo Battery, Fourth Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division, of that I am very proud.” Rest in peace, Al Matthews. Barry, Game of Thrones and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel all had big nights at the 2018 Emmy Awards . But no one had a bigger night than Glenn Weiss. First, the heretofore little known director won Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special due to his work at the Academy Awards. Then, he won the eternal love of girlfriend Jan Svendsen. After hearing his name called, Weiss walked up to the stage and he thanked his daughters and friends at ABC. The acceptance started out as your typical speech. From there, he started speak about his mother, who died just two weeks ago, telling the audience: “Part of my heart is broken. I don’t think it will ever be repaired. But she’s in me and she always will be.” Weiss explained how his mother always believed in “finding the sunshine,” leading him to denote Svensen as “the sunshine in my life,” as he continued: “And Mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.” At this word, the crowd erupted in a loud cheer and Svensen shouted “yes.” It really was an awesome moment. Svendsen was quickly ushered up to the stage by Milo Ventimiglia and a few other stars until she reached the arms of Weiss. As she was walking up, he joked that “I didn’t ask yet. I didn’t ask yet.” But once she was in front of him, Weiss pulled out his dad's engagement ring and got down on one knee. “Jan, I want to put this ring that my mom wore on your finger in front of all these people and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above. Will you marry me?” he asked. And you can guess how she responded, right? By saying YES ! Later on, backstage, the newly-engaged couple told reporters how they met 10 years ago and both have daughters and both produce television shows and how Jan had no idea this was going to happen. “I had no suspicions whatsoever, I had no idea,” she said. “I really hoped he was going to dedicate the award to his mother, and he did, and then some.” Really beautiful stuff. Check out video of the proposal here!
