Cameron Diaz, Chace Crawford Know ‘What To Expect When You’re Expecting’

Stars share the strangest pregnancy facts they learned during filming. By Kara Warner Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford in “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” Photo: Melissa Moseley/ Lionsgate As if the film’s title weren’t explanation enough, “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” is all about what couples experience during pregnancy, based on the best-selling nonfiction book of the same name. Because the subject is a complex, loaded and almost universal one, when MTV News sat down with the castmembers from the film, we asked them to enlighten us with the most unique facts they learned about pregnancy during production. “I think the weirdest thing I’ve seen — I’ve actually seen it — is a woman getting on her hands and knees giving birth,” Matthew Morrison said. “It’s interesting, because you think about a woman [lying on her back] and pushing, but honestly, if you let gravity do the work, it makes it a little easier.” “The squat position, there is a purpose for it — not just to lift the butt and tone the quads,” added Diaz, who plays Morrison’s girlfriend and baby mama in the movie. “But to open the hips and pelvis and let gravity do the work. The only reason a woman is on her back in our culture is so the doctor can see what’s going on. I say get a platform, squat over it, let the doctor be underneath it.” “If you want the baby to come right now, eat spicy food,” Ben Falcone (“Bridesmaids”) said of one tip he’d heard mentioned that might speed up delivery. “Have sex,” said his onscreen wife, Elizabeth Banks. “Sprint,” Falcone joked. “Sprint uphill.” “A lot of running is encouraged,” Banks continued with a smile. “Slam doors. Get surprised. Surprise her, scare her.” Chace Crawford and Anna Kendrick provided the most to-the-point advice, but because their characters have to deal with an unplanned pregnancy, their words of wisdom were how not to get pregnant in the first place. “Wrap it up. That’s what we learned on this shoot,” Crawford said of practicing safe sex with the use of condoms. “Right?” he asked Kendrick, who collapsed into a brief fit of giggles. “Never mind.” “Sorry. You completely lost me,” Kendrick laughed, before regaining composure. “Yeah, wrap it up to avoid pregnancy. And stay away from Chace Crawford; he’s irresistible.” Check out everything we’ve got on “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Rihanna Calls Acting ‘A Challenge’ — But ‘I Like That’

‘Acting was a whole different world,’ the singer-turned-actress tells MTV News, comparing ‘Battleship’ to her music videos. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Rihanna in “Battleship” Photo: Universal Pictures Given Rihanna ‘s illustrious and commanding presence in all her music videos , it seems as though the Caribbean-born superstar’s experience performing in various clips would be the perfect training ground for her eventual transition into full-fledged acting. When MTV News sat down with Rihanna recently to discuss her acting debut in “Battleship,” we asked if her work in music videos helped prepare her for her role in the film. “Training ground? Maybe not, it wasn’t exactly that,” Rihanna said. “For me, acting was a whole different world. We make mini-movies with music videos, but there’s always a song track that’s playing, you don’t have to speak, so [with acting] you have to tell that emotion with the tone of your voice, and I have an accent, so I had to change it to a bit of an American accent for this movie, so that was different,” she explained. So might we see more of Rihanna’s acting skills in future films? We asked the “Where Have U Been” singer if having her first film under her belt has given her the confidence to go out and conquer more movie roles. “It will always be brand-new, because it’s a whole different project every time, it’s a whole new person,” she said. “There’s nothing you can have under your belt with acting, not in my opinion, because I’m not a natural. This isn’t my first [career choice], so I don’t know. I think it’s always going to be a challenge for me, but I like that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Battleship.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . What Makes ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ So Hot?

‘It’s giving us some ideas for future fantasies,’ one reader tells MTV News. By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Uptin Saiidi “Fifty Shades of Grey” book cover Photo: The Writer’s Coffee Shop “Fifty Shades of Grey” has become a worldwide, literary phenomenon. It’s a #1 New York Times best-seller and the most talked-about book in media. The sadomasochistic relationship between characters Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele has made its way into the hands of a variety of readers and hooked them into their torrid love affair. It’s become such a hit that Universal Pictures and Focus Features optioned the rights to the books after a massive bidding war, and fans are already campaigning for their favorite actors to land the lead roles. But what’s the reason for the book’s popularity? With countless erotic and romance stories on bookshelves, what makes “Fifty Shades” stand out? When author E L James headed to New York’s Union Square for a signing at Barnes & Noble, MTV News asked fans to weigh in on why they thought the work was widely recognized. For one, buzz surrounded the novel because of its origins. James adapted Christian and Ana from Stephenie Meyer’s Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, beginning the tale as “Twilight” fan fiction. “[James] took ‘Twilight’ to a next level, because as pure as [Edward and Bella’s] love was, it was not like this book,” one fan explained. “She took it to the next level and gave America something that they were waiting and looking for.” Another reader told us the mystery behind a dominant/submissive relationship is what sparked the frenzy. “I think this book has become such a phenomenon because it’s something that hasn’t really been spoken about before,” she said. “Women usually don’t talk about these things.” In agreement, another fan added: “Everyone has something that they want to enact. And they’re just not able to express it, but they’re able to read it.” Put in simple terms: “Fifty Shades” turns readers on. “It’s hot,” one woman said. “It’s totally sexy. I think we’ve got sex on the brain, and we want to read it. It’s really enjoyable and it’s giving us some ideas for future fantasies.” It also helps that Christian is described as “so hot” in the book. He’s a billionaire who takes Ana on helicopter rides and showers her in expensive clothing and gifts. He’s a woman’s fantasy, one of James’ followers explains. “All women relate to Christian,” she said. “They love him — all women, it doesn’t matter who you talk to. They’re like, ‘I like that guy. I want to date that guy.’ ” Why do you like “Fifty Shades of Grey”? Let us know in the comments below!

Sister Wives Cast to Pick Up Mrs. Kody Brown #5?

Will the cast of TLC’s Sister Wives make it an even five? The crew was asked that and much more by Anderson Cooper this week. Kody Brown, the patriarch of the polygamist family, wasn’t exactly dismissive of the idea of adding a fifth wife, though he didn’t seem eager either. “Certainly not right now,” said Kody. “That doesn’t sound like a ‘no’ to me,” interjected Anderson, before Brown elaborated as to how his religious beliefs leave the door open. Sister Wives on Anderson Clip “You guys have to understand that I answer to essentially a higher call. I’m part of an order, a church,” said Kody, claiming it’s out of his hands. “So there is a situation where I feel I am maxed out anddon’t want to take another wife. I am not interested in that, but there is a requirement.” “I answer to a higher calling, and if that requirement comes along and I have a choice in it, then I will do it. But I would prefer not to.” The spouses – first wife Meri, second wife Janelle, third wife Christine and fourth wife Robyn – say they feel each of their collective 17 kids are their own. Wondered Anderson: “Do you all feel like the mother of the child? How does this work?” Replied Meri: “We feel like one of the moms, definitely.” Added Christine: “When he (the youngest, Solomon ) cries, we all turn and try to make him happy except when it’s time to eat.” The CNN anchor subsequently quizzed them on what it’s like having to move out of Utah, where Kody and company feared prosecution for their polygamist lifestyle, and moving to Las Vegas . Simply put, “It’s great.” Sister Wives Interview Clip “It’s easy,” said Kody. “People apparently are tolerant, and it’s been a very good experience for us. We’ve got businesses that are going very well.” As for whether the brood gets teased at school about plural marriage, he acknowledged “there’s a little”, but, at the age of 13, it’s “very regular.” When Anderson asked if the kids might follow their parents’ example and embrace their unusual lifestyle, Kody acknowledged it’s their choice alone. “Yeah, but they change their minds. Some kids have already [said] they will, some are saying they won’t,” he explained. “Let’s go through college.” “That frontal lobe, that’s the part of the brain that lets you reason with reason, let’s get that developed and then let them make those decisions.” Sister Wives …

President Obama Announces Support For Gay Marriage

President Barack Obama today became the first sitting president to announce support for same-sex marriage, making his position on the subject clear. In a sit-down interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts, Obama completed what has been a long and often dubious “evolution” on the controversial topic. “I’ve always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly,” Obama told Roberts in an interview that will air Thursday. Obama’s announcement, on the heels of North Carolina’s Amendment 1 ban on gay marriage in that state, was made after much soul-searching. “Over the course of several years, I have talked to friends and family and neighbors, and I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together,” he said. “When I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married .” The statement constitutes an act of political bravery on the president’s behalf, as 29 states have now banned gay marriage constitutionally. It’s also a major victory for the gay rights community, which has been pushing him to declare his support for marriage equality for years. Just last Sunday, Vice President Joseph Biden told NBC’s Meet The Press that he was personally comfortable with same-sex marriage. With the issue back in the news, the pressure on Obama intensified. The White House originally insisted over the weekend that Biden clarified his statement as being in reference to civil rights for gay couples. But the explanation was largely dismissed as a political dodge, a way for Obama to support for marriage equality without having to declare it himself. No longer. The president finally chose to speak out Wednesday in the wake of the North Carolina ban, with the White House hastily scheduling an interview. “It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” the president said. “You know when I go to college campuses, sometimes I talk to college Republicans who think that I have terrible policies on the economy, on foreign policy, but are very clear that when it comes to same sex equality or, you know, believe in equality.” “They are much more comfortable with it. You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently.” “It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.” The president’s support of same-sex marriage will have little political impact, at least from a practical standpoint, as most states have tackled the issue legislatively and/or judicially, outside the realm of the federal government. Symbolically, the impact is much more profound. As the first president to support marriage equality, he sets the bar for its social and political acceptance and retains the ability to shape public opinion further. What do you think of President Obama’s support for gay marriage?

Vidal Sassoon, Hairstylist and Fashion Icon, Dies at 84

Renowned hair stylist and fashion icon Vidal Sassoon, known for creating the “bob” style and for a line of consumer products that bear his name, has died. Sassoon passed away today from an unspecified illness at his home on Mulholland Drive in Hollywood. Family members were by his side. Vidal was 84. He was reportedly diagnosed with leukemia in 2009. It’s unclear what role the cancer played in Sassoon’s death . His official cause of death is natural causes. When Sassoon picked up his shears in the 1950s, styled hair was typically curled, teased, piled high and shellacked into place. Then came the 1960s. Sassoon’s creative cuts, which required little styling and fell into place perfectly every time, fit right in with the fledgling women’s liberation movement. Sassoon opened salons in England and expanded to the U.S. before also developing a line of shampoos and other styling products bearing his name. The hairdresser also established global Vidal Sassoon Academies to teach aspiring stylists how to envision haircuts based on a client’s bone structure. The hair icon was married four times, most recently to Rhonda Sassoon, who stayed with him until his death. He is also survived by three children.

Maurice Sendak, Author Of ‘Where The Wild Things Are,’ Dead At 83

Sendak, best known for ‘Wild Things’ and ‘In the Night Kitchen,’ was known for his dark-edged humor and unconventional approach. By Gil Kaufman Maurice Sendak Photo: David Corio/Getty Images Beloved children’s author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, author of the classic boyhood adventure tale “Where the Wild Things Are,” died on Tuesday (May 8) at the age of 83. The New York Times reported that Sendak’s death was a result of complication from a recent stroke. Controversial, irascible and not entirely convinced that he was a children’s author, Sendak wrote literate, dark and moody picture books that explored the anxieties and fears of children, and their parents. Best known for 1963’s “Wild Things,” Sendak also wrote and illustrated the equally groundbreaking “In the Night Kitchen” (1970) and 1981’s “Outside Over There,” which completed a trilogy started with “Wild Things.” The self-taught author couldn’t be bothered with the traditions of children’s books, in which the Times noted, “young heroes and heroines were typically well scrubbed and even better behaved; nothing really bad ever happened for very long; and everything was tied up at the end in a neat, moralistic bow.” Instead, his subjects were often rude, selfish, obstinate and occasionally annoying and sometimes they ran away from home, or were kidnapped or, worst of all, their parents disappeared. Sendak’s illustrations looked like sepia-toned pages from a a 19th-century etching, sprinkled with sly wordplay and references that his youngest readers were unlikely to understand. Though not prolific, Sendak’s work was highly influential. In addition to the abovementioned books, he also created 1960’s “The Sign on Rosie’s Door,” the 1962 boxed set collection of four tiny booklets called “The Nutshell Library” and 1967’s “Higglety Pigglety Pop!” His first writing and illustration effort in 30 years, 2011’s “Bumble-Ardy,” told the story of an orphaned pig who throws a wild birthday party for himself. In addition to his writing, Sendak also designed theater sets and illustrated dozens of other works, including ones by such legendary authors as Hans Christian Andersen and Herman Melville to William Blake and Leo Tolstoy. But amid all the accolades for his work, it was the story of “Wild Things” hero Max that captured the hearts and minds of generations of readers. The irritable boy who likes to wear a wolf costume and sets sail for unforeseen adventures after being sent to his room without dinner was adapted by director Spike Jonze
 into a moody feature film
in 2009. He was also the subject of a documentary, “Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak,” by Lance Bangs, which was released by late Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch’s
Oscilloscope Laboratories. His books were not always a hit with some critics, who complained about the horrifying monsters in “Wild Things” and the nudity of the young hero of “Night Kitchen,” which subjected the book to censorship. But Sendak was undeterred, arguing that life is full of horrors and that children are not immune to the reality of death, loneliness and confusion. Born in Brooklyn, New York on June 10, 1928, Maurice Bernard Sendak was the son of Polish Jewish immigrant parents. The deaths of much of his extended family in the Holocaust imbued him with a sense of mortality early in life, which could explain the often bleak, danger-filled nature of many of his books and the peril of the children he wrote about. He was also a sickly child, which resulted in many days and weeks in bed that allowed his fertile imagination to bloom. He began his professional career as an illustrator working on window displays for F.A.O. Schwarz and segued into illustrating other author’s children’s books in the 1950s before venturing off to write his own books. A solitary man by nature, Sendak lived in Ridgefield, Connecticut with his companion of 50 years, psychiatrist Eugene Glynn, who died in 2007, as well as his dogs and his beloved Mozart records. Sendak appeared on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” earlier this year and shared his wit and wisdom about children’s books with the host. “There is something in this country that is so opposed to understanding the complexity of children,” he said of the controversy kicked up by some of works. “I don’t write for children. I write … and somebody says, ‘That’s for children.’ I didn’t set out to make children happy or make life better for them or easier for them.”
