I’ll admit it: I groaned a bit when word first broke that Steve Carell and Keira Knightley were set to play opposite each other in a romantic comedy set against the end of the world. Knightley, I dreaded, would be reduced to playing May-December arm candy to Carell in her first non-heavy project since Bend it Like Beckham . But as the first trailer for Lorene Scafaria ‘s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World demonstrates, maybe I shouldn’t have worried so much. Maybe . Carell and Knightley play neighbors who set out on a road trip to find their respective loved ones before the world ends after an asteroid is discovering hurtling towards Earth. Scafaria, who penned the zingy hipster romance Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist , makes her directorial debut working from her own script, and from the looks of things this could offer unexpected sorts of laughs, not to mention the rare comic turn by Knightley. That said, Carell seems to be pulling his straightlaced shtick yet again, and Knightley’s afghan-wearing Brit veers dangerously toward manic pixie dream girl territory; will her carefree ways open up his stuffy world view? Will she help him find his way to his high school sweetheart’s arms, only to find she’s fallen in love with him? I hope not. I hope End of the World surprises me. At least we’ll get Melanie Lynskey, Patton Oswalt and Gillian Jacobs to add some colorful bits along the way. Verdict: Tentatively going along for the ride. [via Yahoo ]

One American “idol” may have just made history at Carnegie Hall, but plenty more are about to celebrate history at the world famous venue. Just days after Jay-Z performed on back-to-back nights for charity, “American Idol” Music Director Ray Chew will be holding “A Tribute To The Music of Motown” tonight, February 9th, 2012 at the concert hall. 25 Artists That Need To Be Heard: CJ Hilton The event is being sponsored by United Airlines and hosted by CNN journalist, Soledad O’Brien with a guest list that includes the legendary Dionne Warwick, Paul Shaffer, Boys II Men, BeBe Winans and Motown’s own, Martha Reeves. “This is a tribute to the great iconic music of Motown felt and known the world over, crossed cultural lines and spans generations,” Mr. Chew told TheUrbandaily.com. “It’s very befitting that we bring this music that is part of the American fabric to an iconic venue like Carnegie Hall.” Chew explained that after holding a tribute to Motown on “American Idol” the reality set in that many of the legends of Black music are passing away. And after speaking with Motown founder Berry Gordy that night, Chew felt it was time to “give them their roses while they can smell them” so to speak, and what better time than Black History Month? “A lot of the young artists that I encounter, Motown is in your blood stream whether you realize it or not,” said Chew. “When you rattle of the names of the artists and the songs everyone realizes how much this is part of the experience. Stevie Wonder alone…everyone has performed a Stevie Wonder song at some point. By Adam Graham Group auditions begin on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Group Night Drama took hold of “American Idol” on Thursday (February 9). The whole episode, in fact, zeroed in on the Drama — the infighting, the personality clashes, the late-night bleary eyes — and didn’t make any time for actual, you know, singing. Luckily, there were enough distractions to keep things interesting. A mean sick bug seemed to be going around with the contestants, and Patient Zero was Amy Brumfield, whom you remember as Tent Girl , or the girl who lives in a tent in the woods in Tennessee. Brumfield was down and out for most of the episode, battling flu-like symptoms, while those she came in contact with were also given a mean case of the pukes. Lesson: Perhaps tent life isn’t the healthiest, most stable way to live. Brumfield found herself in a group with Alisha Bernhardt early on, though Bernhardt’s pushiness and insistence her group perform “Joy to the World” — the Three Dog Night version, not the Christmas carol — eventually drove Brumfield away. Bernhardt, a cop, eventually drove everyone in her group away after at one point threatening to fight a fellow contestant; she wound up linking up with another group and rehearsed Sugarland’s “Stuck Like Glue,” rather than “Joy to the World.” But the group’s progress was halted when group member Christian Lopez, wouldn’t you know it, got sick. (No telling if Brumfield was to blame.) Speaking of being sick, Symone Black — the contestant whose nasty fall off the “Idol” rehearsal stage ended Wednesday’s “Idol” episode — made her way back from the hospital to the good news that she’d advanced to the next round but the bad news that most of the groups had already been formed. She was able to quickly link up with a group, however, and her biggest issue seemed to be that her father, George Black, embarrassed her with his level of unconditional support. Competing with Bernhardt for the evening’s Drama Queen title were Brielle Von Hugel, a Hollywood Week veteran who was in a group with Pia Toscano last year, and Brianna-Marie Bell, who turned her nose up at contestants who were unable to identify whether they were an alto soprano or a mezzo soprano. But both were outshined, however, by the cowboy-hat-clad Richie Law, a would-be Scotty McCreery who drove his team — which included wry jokester Heejun Han — with a singular vision and an iron fist. He insisted his group learn multiple harmonies and dance steps and wouldn’t take “no” for an answer, and was seemingly clueless to his teammates’ lack of belief in his vision. “We’re gonna do this my way, and that’s it,” he said at one point, leading to one of many eye-rolls from Han. The episode was all buildup, no climax; viewers will have to wait until next week to find out who stays, who goes and if all the drama was worth it. At the opening of the episode, early favorite Lauren Gray — “I have two words for today: Lauren Gray,” Jennifer Lopez said after the St. Louis auditions — was dismissed. Director Gary Ross tells MTV News the first-person perspective will be shown ‘cinematically,’ not through voice-over. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Gary Ross Photo: MTV News For our fellow “Hunger Games” fans who are following each and every detail released about the upcoming big-screen adaptation, one of the key questions is how the filmmakers will address the fact that a large amount of the story is told via Katniss’ inner monologue. Will we be hearing Jennifer Lawrence narrate throughout the film via voice-over or will we see the action from multiple characters’ perspectives? Today is our lucky day, because we have an answer straight from director Gary Ross himself, who told MTV News recently that after much careful consideration he is not using any voice-over. “I’m not using voice-over for her. This thing is all from Katniss’ perspective,” he said of the story. “It is a first-person point of view. How do we put the viewer immediately and urgently in that experience they had when they read the book and they’re in Katniss Everdeen’s shoes? A lot of that is done cinematically. I spent a lot of time wondering and thinking about at the beginning of this process, ‘What does it really mean to be in the character’s point of view cinematically?’ I looked at a lot of really interesting references for that, but it comes down to: You don’t know more than the character knows.” Ross said we will be experiencing everything from Katniss’ perspective; we just won’t be hearing her talk us through it. “You wonder about what she’s wondering about, you worry about what she’s worrying about,” he explained. “You don’t know things she doesn’t know, and as such, you wander and experience things through her eyes, so that’s the first job: How do we make people feel they’re walking in Katniss’ shoes and encountering the same obstacles and challenges she is?” he said. “A lot is done cinematically and a lot is having someone as good as Jen Lawrence.” The “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit” helmer was cagey when asked about the specific look and style of the film but did promise they did everything they could to make things as realistic and believable as possible. “I don’t want to start giving specific scenes away, I know you understand that.
