Foster The People’s ‘Pumped Up Kicks’: Bullying At The Beach

The band is surprised that their cheery-sounding song about a kid with a gun is a contender for Summer Jam of 2011. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Foster the People performing live Photo: Joseph Llanes/ Foster the People Chances are, if you’ve been within a five-mile radius of a radio this summer, you’ve probably heard Foster the People ‘s “Pumped Up Kicks,” their hazy, fuzzy track that has become an unexpected smash and a genuine contender for the Summer Jam of 2011 . But have you really listened to the song — or, more specifically, its lyrics? In keeping with the grand tradition of such alt-hits like Eels’ “Novocaine for the Soul” and the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Today,” the track manages to hide a rather dark message beneath all the mirth. ” ‘Pumped Up Kicks,’ is really about bullying, and the tragedy that bullying produces … if that kid retaliates in a nasty way; both sides end up being harmed,” Foster frontman Mark Foster told MTV News. “All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you’d better run, better run, outrun my gun,” goes the chorus, in a deceptively cheery tone. “I tend to do that with a lot of songs,” Foster said. “I like to tell a different type of story, lyrically, than what the music is expressing, because it brings another layer to the story itself. I wrote it a block away from the beach, and I was working at a music house — Mophonics, a place where I composed for ads and stuff — and I think that had some influence on the sound.” And while Foster the People might be getting a kick out of the fact that their decidedly dark tune has become one of the year’s biggest tracks, they’re also blown away by its slow-burning success … because, really, they never thought “Kicks” would do everything that it has. “I wrote the song like a year and half ago, and for it to still be circling around and become a summer song this year, I think it was definitely unexpected on our part,” Foster said. “We like the song, but we had no idea it would spread around the world the way that it has.” Still, they’re taking full advantage of their newfound clout. Foster said he’s already working on the follow-up to their debut, Torches (which just came out in May), bringing a portable studio out on the road — and they’ve got big plans for another potential hit. Or, we should say, they had big plans … until Katy Perry went ahead and ruined them with her “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” video . “Yeah, we really want to get Kenny G involved on a track, he would just slay it,” Foster sighed. “And I think we were all really bummed out, actually, when we found out that Katy Perry put him in her video, because we had been talking about that for a year — bringing Kenny G into the fold and writing something with him. But, that’s OK. Katy Perry had it first, we’ll have sloppy seconds.” Is “Pumped Up Kicks” one of your favorite songs of the summer? Talk about it in the comments! Related Artists Foster the People

‘Harry Potter’ World Cup Down To Final Four!

It’s Hermione vs. Snape and Ron vs. Sirius in a showdown for the title of best ‘Potter’ character. By Terri Schwartz Photo: Warner Bros. With only four days left to vote in MTV News’ “Harry Potter” World Cup , the competition is heating up as the contestants narrow down. The Final Four “Harry Potter” characters were revealed Friday (July 8), and now Hermione Granger faces off against Professor Snape while Ron Weasley has a showdown with Sirius Black . It’s anyone’s call as to who will make it into the finals, let alone take home the trophy. “It gets down to who fans really want to see take this entire tournament home,” said Julia Hodges of DanRadcliffe.com and RupertGrint.net . Even with the stakes raised so high, the “Harry Potter” experts MTV has been chatting with have their own gut feelings about who is going to make it into the final round. And, according to Rosie Halse of the Leaky Cauldron , this is Hermione’s last hurrah. “This is where Hermione is going to fall down, unfortunately,” Halse predicted. “I love Hermione to pieces, but I think that Snape has a much more ardent following. He has so many twists and turns in the book, whereas Hermione is quite a constant character that perhaps Snape might win on a character basis.” But the experts still feel that one of the series’ Big Three will make it into the finals: Ron Weasley. “Sirius has been such an important role model to Harry, yet Ron has been such an important friend to Harry,” Andrew Sims of MuggleNet said. “I think in this competition, Ron is going to win because: A) popularity, and B) he’s always been by Harry’s side.” Voting for the Final Four continues on the MTV Movies Blog through Sunday, July 10, at midnight. Then the showdown between the last two “Potter” characters left standing begins promptly at 12:01 a.m. ET on Monday, July 11, with the winner being announced later that night during MTV’s live stream of the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” red-carpet premiere in New York City. We’re streaming live from the red carpet at the New York premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” on Monday, July 11, at 4:30 p.m. ET. Details on the phone hacking scandal have been largely absent from US news. For months, an unfolding story centered on tabloids hacking into phones has been taking shape in the UK. Bristol Palin Grilled By Barbara Walters on Levi Johnston Boning, "Moral Code"

Bristol Palin is making the media rounds to promote her new book, Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far . Yes, Bristol Palin seriously has a memoir. Today on The View, she was greeted by Barbara Walters and some surprisingly tough questions about Levi Johnston, her sex life and her morals. It was kind of awkward for Bristol and viewers alike. Bristol Palin on The View In response to Palin’s claim that Levi stole her virginity when he pitched a tent – in more ways than one!! – that night in Alaska, Walters asked: “It must have been okay, because you kept on having sex with him, yeah?” Cringe . Bristol Palin smiled and responded “We did it that one night and I just figured it’s okay to do it again because I’d already broken my moral code.” Using that logic, Casey Anthony might as well have another baby and kill her too, because a moral code is a one-shot deal. Sorry, moving on . Bristol also said she was on birth control at the time she got pregnant, but it wasn’t used effectively. By effectively, she probably means at all. Okay, now that images of a nude Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin fornicating have been burned into your brain, let’s talk about something else.

A “Lil Positivity”: Oprah Winfrey Says She Is Going To Africa To Become A High School Teacher

Damn, word… Oprah Winfrey is back in the USA after spending time with her “girls” at the school she opened in South Africa, but don’t fear, ladies, Miss O will be returning soon in the role of teacher. “They were all stressed for tests, but doing fine,” Oprah emailed fans — including yours truly — about her students. “No major crisis this trip. I love being with them and talking to them about all things important. When I’m there I’m talking from the time I get up till I go to bed, about EVERYTHING teenage girls are going through. It’s the same all over the world.” Oprah revealed that she would be returning this fall to teach a class called ‘It’s Life 101′ about all the stuff she wished someone had told her about how the world really works. “Should be fun since I love to teach. And they’re like sponges,” Oprah said. “Like 12th graders everywhere, this first class is both anxious and excited about going to college. Most will be the first in their family. So it’s a very big deal for them, and they’re feeling the pressure.” Adding that there is nothing like leaving the USA to get a deeper appreciation of the freedoms we sometimes take for granted. For what it’s worth, this is a pretty good idea that should be in every High School. Kids need to know what exactly the “adult world” is about, especially as they are about to enter college. Source
