Rihanna Defends ‘Man Down’ Video’s Violent Scenes

‘U can’t hide your kids from society, or they’ll never learn how to adapt!’ singer tweets. By Gil Kaufman Rihanna Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage A day after the Parents Television Council and other groups decried the violent murder scene in her new “Man Down” video , Rihanna took to the air and to Twitter to defend her clip from detractors. “I’m a 23 year old rock star with NO KIDS! What’s up with everybody wantin me to be a parent? I’m just a girl, I can only be your/our voice!” she wrote on Thursday. “Cuz we all know how difficult/embarrassing it is to communicate touchy subject matters to anyone especially our parents! And this is why! … Cuz we turn the other cheek! U can’t hide your kids from society, or they’ll never learn how to adapt! This is the REAL WORLD! … The music industry isn’t exactly Parents R Us! We have the freedom to make art, LET US! It’s your job to make sure they don’t turn out like US.” The PTC took issue with the opening scene in the video, in which Rihanna is shown shooting an unarmed man in the back of the head in the middle of a crowded train station. Viewers later learn that the act was in retaliation for a previous sexual assault. The PTC, the Enough Is Enough campaign and the entertainment think tank Industry Ears released a statement on Wednesday condemning the video for what the group said was an apparent enticement to young women to turn to violence. ” ‘Man Down’ is an inexcusable, shock-only, shoot-and-kill theme song,” said Industry Ears co-founder Paul Porter. The PTC lamented that Rihanna had a “golden opportunity” to use her celebrity status to send an important message to young girls and victims of rape and domestic violence with the clip, but had missed the mark. “Instead of telling victims they should seek help, Rihanna released a music video that gives retaliation in the form of premeditated murder the imprimatur of acceptability,” said the PTC’s Melissa Henson. The singer later pleaded with her fans to stop making threats against members of the PTC, writing, “We love it, they don’t … that is all, and the world keeps turning.” She also called in to the BET show “106 & Park” on Thursday night to defend the clip, saying she didn’t set out to spark any controversy, but isn’t surprised she did. “Rape is, unfortunately, happening all over the world and in our own homes, and we continue to cover it up and pretend it doesn’t happen,” Rihanna said. “Boys and girls feel compelled to be embarrassed about it and hide it from everyone, including their teachers, their parents and their friends. That only continues to empower the abusers.” She noted that the song’s lyrics clearly express the character’s regret over her actions, and while the song doesn’t mention rape, that was added to the video to make the story more complete. “Making that into a mini-movie or video, we needed to go back to why it happened,” she explained. “Obviously, she’s not a cold-blooded killer. It had to be something so offensive. And we decided to hone in on a very serious matter that people are afraid to address, especially if you’ve been victimized in this scenario.” Though she has been a victim of domestic violence — her ex, singer Chris Brown, pleaded guilty to felony assault against her in 2009 — Rihanna said she does not condone violence or murder. “I’ve been abused in the past, and you don’t see me running around killing people in my spare time,” she said. “I just really want girls to be careful. Have fun, be sassy, be innocent, be sweet, be everything that you are. But just try not to be naive. That’s not coming from a parent but from a peer.” The video debuted on “106 & Park” on Tuesday and after the PTC demanded it be taken off the air by BET, the network released a statement on Thursday in response to the controversy. “BET Networks has a comprehensive set of standards and guidelines that are applied to all of our content. The Rihanna ‘Man Down’ video complied with these guidelines and was approved for air. At the same time, it is clear that the ‘Man Down’ video has sparked a passionate dialogue and we will continue this conversation with our audience tonight on ‘106 & Park.’ ” MTV has not aired “Man Down,” and a spokesperson said the network is currently in the process of reviewing the video. Lady Gaga’s Loyalty Applauded Following MTV’s ‘Inside The Outside’

‘As a friend and as a fan, she’s so loyal to what she likes and who she loves,’ Semi Precious Weapons’ Justin Tranter tells MTV News. By James Dinh, with reporting by James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: MTV News Underneath the layers of over-the-top outfits and catchy dance tunes, Lady Gaga has always remained loyal to her friends, family and army of Little Monsters. That was just one of many points made in the MTV documentary “Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside,” which dove into Gaga’s pre- and post-fame life . During “Lady Gaga: The After-Show,” MTV News’ James Montgomery chatted with many of the singer’s confidants, including Semi Precious Weapons frontman Justin Tranter, Lady Starlight, documentary director Davi Russo and producer Fernando Garibay. As the opening act for her worldwide Monster Ball Tour, Tranter knows more than anyone about the singer’s devotion, calling her “the most loyal friend you could ever ask for.” “We’ve been so desperately wanting to be a band for so long and busting our asses, and for Gaga to put her foot down as the biggest star in the world and insist that this really f—ing loud rock band fronted by a man in heels needs to open for her all over the world shows her character,” Tranter said of the singer, who used to open for his band before she hit it big. “As a friend and as a fan, she’s so loyal to what she likes and who she loves.” Gaga’s longtime friend and early performing partner Lady Starlight also chimed in on the pop star’s devotion since before her fame years, praising the singer for always giving credit where it’s due. “She’s always … talked about me and given me credit for anything we worked on together,” Starlight told us via Skype. “And you don’t see people coming out after, like, their first album, when they’re trying to prove themselves, so willing to give exposure to the people who they care about and who influence them and who they work with. That’s unprecedented.” Russo echoed those sentiments about Gaga’s bond to friends like Starlight and Tranter. “It’s just refreshing and inspiring to know. … It’s like the people you really come up with are the people you still surround yourself with, regardless of what’s happening,” Russo said of the singer. “I can’t say that about so many people, unfortunately.” How does Lady Gaga show her loyalty to her Little Monsters? Taylor Swift Wants To Thank Fans ‘Personally’ On Speak Now Tour

‘I hope people leave the concert feeling like they know you better,’ she tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News It’s a big week for Taylor Swift . Not only did she premiere her “Story of Us” video Tuesday on MTV, but she also kicks off her Speak Now Tour on Friday in Omaha, Nebraska. When MTV News’ Sway sat down with the country/pop superstar following her video premiere, she let fans in on what to expect from the stadium show. “We get to have such groovy, cool stuff happening,” she said. “I’ve never had pyro before. I’ve never had aerialists before. It’s got this grand staircase. The stage in itself looks like an old-world theater. I can’t believe we get to play stadiums. I’m so excited about this tour. I want to live on that stage. I hope people leave the concert feeling like they know you better.” Swift looks at this tour as the ultimate “thank you” letter to her fans for the success Speak Now has had. “That’s why I’m so blown away. That’s why I can’t wait to go out on tour and thank them personally,” she said. Before the official tour kickoff, Swift gave some lucky fans a taste of the show during a charity event last Saturday in Nashville. She opened up her final Speak Now dress rehearsal to fans and gave the proceeds to tornado victims. “It was one of the coolest things. Honestly, we thought our first show was going to be a week later, [but] watching the news and seeing the damage, it was just really emotional for me and a lot of the dancers and crew,” she recalled. “So I felt like, if there was any way I could help out, why not sell tickets to that? And so it turned out it was something we could do. Putting on, pretty much, our first show and having it go so well [and making] over $750,000, it was so exciting.” Will you check out Taylor’s upcoming tour? Let us know in the comments! Swizz Beatz Promises ‘Art Piece’ Video For Bono, Kanye West Collabo

Swizz says Kanye originally recorded three verses for ‘Skyscrapers’ track, leaving no room for his own contribution to the song. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Swizz Beatz Photo: MTV News Swizz Beatz has friends in high places. For his upcoming Haute Living album, the multiplatinum producer reached out to U2’s Bono and Kanye West to lend their touch to a track called “Skyscrapers.” The thought of the three stars on a single track is enough to excite any music fan, but Swizz told MTV News how the song almost became a Kanye West solo affair. Swizz played the track for ‘Ye, whom he considers a brother, and got verbal confirmation from the Louis Vuitton Don that he would appear on the song. But after Kanye laid down his vocals and sent the track back, Swizz found that Yeezy had completed the entire song himself. “He gives me the track back, done, three verses, the chorus there and a bridge. So I’m like, there ain’t no room for me on that thing!” Swizz says laughing. “I’m like, ‘Not on this one, baby.’ So I got two extra verses in the stash.” As of now, there is no telling where those extra Kanye vocals will end up, but fans can expect to hear “Skyscrapers” and see a video for the track soon — even if the three featured artists don’t appear in the clip. Judging by Swizzy’s description of both the track and the video, fans should get ready for a thought-provoking experience. “I felt like there was a lot of things going on in the world that was bigger than all of us. So as of right now, we’re not in the video,” Swizz says of the song’s visuals, which he has already begun working on. “It’s like an art piece. It’s like a documentary of the world as we don’t know it, but kind of know it. You know these things are going on in the world, but you don’t really know to what degree they’re going on in the world. So I took time out to piece up a couple of visuals that represent that — moving visuals. Right now, me, Bono, Kanye, we’re trying to figure out what’s the right way to have that message.” Swizz warns that since the video is still in development, things can change between now and the release. Are you looking forward to hearing Swizz’s collaboration with Bono and Kanye? Let us know in the comments.
