‘Man On A Ledge’ Takes Sam Worthington To The Edge

Actor talks to MTV News about role as a cop ‘battling for his life in the ultimate extreme.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Sam Worthington in “Man on a Ledge” Photo: Summit When walking into a theater to see a movie called “Man on a Ledge,” it may seem like there isn’t a whole lot of mystery to what the film will be about. But it has to get more complicated from there, right? To find out, MTV News’ Josh Horowitz visited the New York City set and talked to the stars themselves. “The movie is called ‘Man on a Ledge.’ It’s about a guy on a ledge,” said Anthony Mackie , one of the stars of the film. Mackie’s co-star Elizabeth Banks expanded on the plot and revealed more of the mystery. “Really, everything’s in the title,” she said. “It’s about a man on a ledge, and the people around him who are trying to figure out why he’s on the ledge, and how to get him off the ledge before he falls off and dies.” During the visit, Josh Horowitz sat on the ledge to speak with the man himself, Sam Worthington . Worthington explained that obviously there’s more to the movie than the man and his ledge. What makes it worth watching is the story behind the man: A good cop was framed and wrongfully sent to prison, and after a thrilling escape, he takes to the ledge in order to prove his innocence once and for all. “This is his retrial,” Worthington said. “Good action really comes down to the stakes, what’s at stake, whether it’s rescuing the girl, getting the diamonds or whatever,” Worthington said. “He’s battling for his life in the ultimate extreme, just on a ledge. He’s on the edge on the ledge. Because the stakes are so high, I think that’s why we can label it a thriller, an action thriller.” But even with high stakes, a movie taking place primarily on the side of building has a limited amount of space to move within. Banks said that even though Worthington’s character is more or less stuck, there’s still a lot of movement. “He moves around, though, on the ledge, and I think also he’s constantly in danger. We’re really trying to keep him alive, even though he doesn’t want to jump,” Banks said. “There is always a danger that you could slip and fall. You have to unravel an entire scenario that’s happening.” The scenario Banks referred to is the heist going on across the street, the whole reason behind the man on the ledge and his desperate attempt to clear his name. For Worthington, “Man on a Ledge” has provided challenges as an actor he doesn’t face every day. “This one’s been different because I’ve been having to talk. I’m having to act for the first time probably ever,” he said. That might not be what you expect from a movie with such a simple title, but Worthington learned from Mackie that acting is exactly what the movie requires. “Mackie’s done these kinds of movies, and he said to me, ‘Our job is to ground the action,’ ” he said. “That’s always what I’ve been trying to do. If we can get away with it on this one, it’s not just a gimmick movie then.” Are you excited for “Man on a Ledge”? Let us know in the comments section!

‘Avatar 2’ Underwater Filming Has Sam Worthington ‘Nervous’

‘I love the ocean, but I’m just a bit unsure about it,’ actor tells MTV News about James Cameron sequel. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Kara Warner Sam Worthington Photo: MTV News The upcoming sequel to James Cameron’s record-breaking film “Avatar” is going to showcase a whole new area of Pandora. With the destruction of the Na’vi’s Hometree in the first flick, Jake Sully, Neytiri and the rest of the tribe are apparently going to be spending some quality time in the planet’s ocean . And, to try to keep the filmgoing experience as authentic as possible, Cameron would like to shoot those scenes underwater . As an avid fan of diving, this is a passion project for Cameron, though he admitted to MTV News in the past that he likes to keep his work and extracurriculars separate. At least it’s not going to be all new to him, as Cameron previously said that he learned a few tricks from producing the underwater thriller “Sanctum.” The difficulty is trying to figure out how to do performance capture underwater, which is something he said has never been done before. In preparation for the film, Cameron is apparently trying to convince his leading man, Sam Worthington, to go diving with him. “He’s trying to get me to scuba-dive,” Worthington told MTV News on Friday (January 6). “I’ve never been, but he got me the gear and the tanks, so I’ve got to give it a go. I’ve got to get my lessons. I’m a bit nervous.” Worthington’s quickly running out of time to start training, though, as his “Avatar” costar Sigourney Weaver started the rumor that Cameron plans to get the cameras rolling on “Avatar 2” at some point in 2012 . Worthington admitted that he’s a little uncomfortable with the concept of learning how to scuba-dive and shooting underwater. Turns out he’s more afraid of filming in the ocean than he was of heights, a fear he had to cope with while shooting his upcoming thriller “Man on a Ledge,” out January 27. “I love the ocean, but I’m just a bit unsure about it. I suppose once I’m down there and have done it, it will be [ snaps fingers ],” Worthington said. “I’m not worried about [the unknown]; that’s the exciting part. It’s more the claustrophobia.” But sacrifices must be made for the greater good of the film. Cameron told MTV News that he wanted to shoot in the water because “we’ll have characters that are in and under the water.” At least Worthington has a better sense of how the ocean plotline will fit into the greater “Avatar” narrative than we do. “I don’t know when [Cameron]’s going to start ‘Avatar 2,’ but I know he’s been telling me bits about it,” he said. ‘Wrath Of The Titans’ Trailer: Five Key Elements

From Liam Neeson’s authoritative voice to Ralph Fiennes’ villain, we glimpse what’s in store for the ‘Clash of the Titans’ sequel. By Kara Warner Sam Worthington in “Wrath of the Titans” Photo: Warner Bros. The last time we caught up with Perseus ( Sam Worthington ), Zeus ( Liam Neeson ), Hades ( Ralph Fiennes ) and Co. in 2010’s “Clash of the Titans,” the gods were playing around with human lives, the Kraken was released and destroyed, and Perseus was asked to join the ranks on Mount Olympus. And although we’ve long known about the film’s sequel “Wrath of the Titans,” we haven’t had a clear look at what we’ll be getting into when it opens next March, until now. The “Wrath of the Titans” trailer is here and it is an action-packed extravaganza of sword slinging, monster-fighting excellence. Here are the five key elements we took away from the two-minute clip: When Liam Neeson Speaks, People Listen Oscar winner Liam Neeson is a perfect leader of things in film. He just has a natural gravitas and stature to make it work every time. Neeson as Zeus is a perfect example, and in the “Wrath” trailer, he uses that captivating narrator voice of his to tell the audience everything we need to know about the plot: “We Gods are losing our power. We believed the Titans to be imprisoned forever, now they’re breaking free.” His voice carries over shots of various Titans landing in various places and starting to wreak havoc. “It would mean chaos,” he says with feeling. “The end of the world.” Perseus vs. Everyone So how do we prevent the end of this world? With Perseus, of course, the demi-god descendent of Zeus himself, who saved the day in the first movie and will likely be doing the same in the second. Perseus is basically fighting various elements, monsters, gods and humans throughout the trailer, so when Zeus tells his son, “You will learn someday that being half human makes you stronger than a god,” we have to believe him because how else could he survive such beatings? Awesome CG Everything While fans of the 1981 original “Clash of the Titans” may remember the film most fondly for its camp factor and Claymation effects, there is no room for those in the reboots. Judging by the sleek and sophisticated design we see here in the trailer, i.e., the sonic boom blast following a god’s descent to earth, Hades in the Underworld, Cyclops, scary winged beasts, etc., “Wrath of the Titans” will be a feast for the eyes and fans of highly stylized CG. Andromeda Gets In On the Action? Everyone loves a beautiful femme fatale, one of Greek mythology’s favorite through lines, but we can all agree that it’s more fun when a female lead gets in on the action. Rosamund Pike has taken over the role of Andromeda in “Wrath,” and from the looks of things, wielding a sword, for instance, she might have more to do in this one than getting helplessly tied to a rock. Ralph Fiennes Should Only Play Villains How much do we love Ralph Fiennes as a villain? See his Oscar-nominated performance in “Schindler’s List” and his brilliance as He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named in the “Harry Potter” franchise. Fiennes makes his villains look as terrible as they are fun to play. His one line in this trailer is delivered with the perfect combination of calm, confidence and cool we’ve come to know and love: “You’re sweating like a human. Next, it will be tears.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Wrath of the Titans.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Avatar’ Sequels Planned For December 2014, ’15

Director James Cameron outlines his plan to shoot the sequels together. By Aly Semigran Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington in “Avatar” Photo: 20th Century Fox On James Cameron’s watch, come 2014 and 2015, it will, in fact, be a blue, blue Christmas. The writer/producer/director, who was at the helm of 2009’s Oscar-winning, box-office-record-breaking “Avatar,” told Entertainment Weekly that fans of the big-screen digital breakthrough should expect its subsequent sequels within the next three to four years. “I am in the process of writing the next two ‘Avatar’ films now,” Cameron said. “We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart.” Cameron said that the “current plan” is for the follow-ups to hit theaters by “Christmas ’14 and ’15.” While the first “Avatar” took more than four years from inception to screen, Cameron told MTV News back in December 2009, “My next goal is to refine the technique, make it easier so it doesn’t take as long.” “From the time we capture and finish the capture, it’s literally nine to 10 months to get the CG characters working, to get their facial musculature working. … So now we have Jake, we have Neytiri. Sam can step right back into it, the characters will fit them like a glove, and we’ll just go on. So a lot of the start-up torque that had to be done for one movie really makes more sense if you play it out across several films,” Cameron explained. While the 56-year-old did not divulge on too many plot details for the “Avatar” sequels, he did confirm to EW that characters such as Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), should be expected to make a return. “Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form,” Cameron said. After hinting that the sequels would take place in Pandora’s ocean, Cameron spoke to MTV News last year about how he would make the new environment come to life. “I think what we should do there is — because we’ll have to have characters that are in and under the water — is that we should actually capture them underwater,” the “Titanic” director said. And while Cameron’s storyline may change from the first to the second and third films, it seems his purpose behind the project has stayed steadfast. “Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the ‘Avatar’ world,” he told EW. “I didn’t want to make more ‘Avatar’ movies without a grander plan in place.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Captain Beefheart’s Death Mourned On Twitter

Linda Perry, Penn Jillette, Akron Family and more remember late avant-garde icon. By Mawuse Ziegbe “Captain Beefheart” Don Van Vliet Photo: Michael Putland/Getty Images Avant-garde artist Captain Beefheart was given a heartfelt e-sendoff by several celebrity fans after he died Friday (December 17) at age 69. After news of the passing of Beefheart, who was also known as Don Van Vliet, circled the world, a range of high-profile tweeters took to the social-networking site to type tributes to the late Magic Band leader and music game-changer. Former 4 Non Blondes frontwoman and singer/songwriter Linda Perry wrote , “Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band … RIP January 15 1941 – December 17 2010.” She also included a link to the melancholic doo-wop track “I’m Glad” from the 1967 album Safe as Milk. Comedian and illusionist Penn Jillette tweeted , “Captain Beefheart has died. Another inspiration & hero gone. He’s been painting, no music for a while, but I still listen all the time.” Beefheart was close to childhood friend and fellow artistic original Frank Zappa, whose children shared tender missives via Twitter in the wake of his passing. “Just heard about Captain Beefheart. Sad day indeed,” Diva Zappa tweeted . “R.I.P. Captain Beefheart…sad day,” Zappa’s son Ahmet wrote, before tacking on his favorite memory of the late artist. “Best Captain Beefheart moment. I was on the phone with him a few years ago and he asked me ‘what about a platypus in a briefcase?’ Love!” Since Beefheart’s entry into music and art more than four decades ago, his genre-melding approach has influenced a new generation of folk/pop appreciators and freak-flag wavers, many of whom paid tribute to the star on Twitter. “R.I.P. Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart. We wish you safe passage and return,” indie collective Akron Family tweeted . “RIP DVV, my mum got me into you when i was 15. Lx,” read a message posted on Scottish band Camera Obscura’s Twitter account that included a link to “Call on Me.” Experimental upstart Zola Jesus tweeted about how Beefheart’s music is still making an impact and being shared among young artists, writing, “Gave my brother my old, worn down copy of Trout Mask Replica before I moved as a thank you to introducing me to his music when I was far too young. Nothing he did was a mistake, there were no accidents in his music. Only sheer invention, passion… dear god, why does the world keep losing such important people? Who will fill their shoes? My heart is heavy for you, Don Van Vliet!” Share your memories of Captain Beefheart in the comments. Related Artists Captain Beefheart
