‘Avatar’ Director Has ‘Great Ideas’ For Sequel, Sam Worthington Says

Actor behind Jake Sully tells MTV News he talks to James Cameron ‘all the time,’ and expects more details in 2011. By Kara Warner Sam Worthington Photo: MTV News At this time last year, most movie talk revolved around “Avatar” and its record-shattering box-office numbers on its way to being anointed the most successful film of all time. This year, however, all the discussion has revolved around the inevitable “Avatar” sequels Fox has announced there will be two and that director James Cameron will shoot at least one of them partially underwater . When MTV News caught up with star Sam Worthington on the set of his new thriller “Man on a Ledge,” the in-demand actor (seriously, check out his IMDb lineup for proof) said he’s been in close contact with Cameron about follow-ups but that specifics will start to take shape next year. “I talk to [Cameron] all the time,” Worthington said. “I talked to him last week. I think at the moment he’s still doing the [‘Avatar’] bible, the book , and I think the book will then inspire where he wants to take it,” the “Clash of the Titans” star explained. “He’s got great ideas; what he told me about, where he wants to set it, things he wants to explore. We’ll probably talk next year, and then he can fill us in on where, personally, he wants to take it, where emotionally he wants to take it.” Regarding the sequel’s underwater setting, Worthington said only some of the action will take place in the water. “[Cameron] is going to explore that [underwater] world,” he said. “It won’t fully take place underwater but he’s definitely going to explore — same as the mountains, he can explore more, outer space [as well] — it’s up to him,” Worthington added. “He created the world.” And finally, we asked Worthington about the future of Jake Sully, specifically whether audiences will ever see his human form onscreen again. Worthington said he had “no idea.” What do you want to see in the “Avatar” sequels? Tell us in the comments! ‘Avatar’ Director James Cameron Talks ‘Alien Kink Scene’

‘I would call it more of an alien foreplay scene,’ he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington in “Avatar” Photo: 20th Century Fox With the re-release of the biggest film in movie history quickly approaching (“Avatar” hits theaters again in 3-D and 3-D IMAX on August 27), fans and critics alike are speculating what impact director James Cameron’s nine extra minutes of footage will have on the overall story. When MTV News caught up with Cameron last week, we asked him whether the extra footage might contain the infamous Na’vi sex scene between Neytiri and Jake. “You mean the alien kink scene?” he joked. “It’s been restored, every last frame of it. Seriously,” he said, adding that the scene in question won’t break any records — it lasts all of about 20 seconds. “I would say, just so that we correctly manage people’s expectations,” he explained carefully, “it does not change our rating at all. I would call it more of an alien foreplay scene. It’s not like they’re ripping their clothes off and going at it.” Whether 20 seconds or 100, the buzz around the scene in question has been intense, and the media coverage even more extensive. The film’s star, Sam Worthington, told MTV News last month that the famed scene is “unique,” and, judging by the descriptions from Cameron’s actual script , which was briefly posted online, unique is certainly the appropriate term. “The tendrils intertwine with gentle undulations,” one line reads. The shared experience is described as “the ultimate intimacy.” “They come together into a kiss and sink down on the bed of moss, and ripples of light spread out around them.” Do you want to see the Na’vi love scene? Angelina Jolie, Rain Battle For Biggest Badass Star At MTV Movie Awards

Sam Worthington, Chris Pine and Channing Tatum will also throw down in the category at Sunday’s show. By Josh Wigler Angelina Jolie in “Salt” Photo: Andrew Schwartz There are some new categories this year at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, including Biggest Badass Star — and no, it’s not unnatural that you’re intimidated by this addition to the competitive lineup. After all, when talking about an assortment of characters ranging from a betrayed super-spy to a big blue alien, it’s more than understandable to find yourself in awe. There’s Chris Pine for starters — he portrayed “Star Trek” leading man James T. Kirk, a Star Fleet graduate who is light-years ahead of his class in terms of intellect, bravery and skill, even if his cocksure attitude frequently lowers his reputation in the eyes of his contemporaries. The real question is, how will voters react to the character’s signature arrogance? Even if Pine can command a starship crew, is he capable of staving off the vicious warrior played by Rain in “Ninja Assassin,” the action flick produced by the Wachowski siblings? As the silent killer Raizo, the South Korean pop sensation pursued his fictional mentor with a bloodlust rarely seen in modern mainstream cinema. But are moviegoers on board with Raizo’s quest for vengeance? He’s not the only one out to settle a score, as Angelina Jolie is also a candidate for Biggest Badass Star. No stranger to playing badasses, in the upcoming “Salt” she’s an agent betrayed by her own government and forced to clear her name. If Jolie’s Salt is a questionable quantity in her country’s eyes, there’s no denying who the real American hero is of these nominees: none other than Channing Tatum, who played the courageous Duke in “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.” While Duke’s loyalties are unquestionable, his Boy Scout level of commitment to upholding rules could ultimately cost him in the race towards Biggest Badass. In the end, if there’s one thing these four contenders can agree upon, it’s this: Sam Worthington has a major advantage thanks to two separate badass roles this year in “Avatar” and “Clash of the Titans.” But in the Australian actor’s defense, both human-turned-alien-warrior Jake Sully and the partially godlike Perseus truly were two of the most undisputed badasses of the year — can anyone really hold those performances against Worthington? Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. ‘Avatar’ Star Sam Worthington To Produce, Appear In ‘Quatermain’

Actor will play treasure hunter back from outer space in sci-fi adaptation of literary tale. By Adam Rosenberg Sam Worthington Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Science fiction was very good to Sam Worthington in 2009. His Marcus Wright was one of the bright spots in “Terminator Salvation,” and he finished the year in grand style, starring in James Cameron’s record-shattering sci-fi epic, “Avatar.” It’s no wonder the actor will make his debut as a producer in an out-of-this-world take on famed literary treasure hunter Allan Quatermain. Worthington will produce and star in DreamWorks’ “Quatermain,” an update of the character introduced in H. Rider Haggard’s Victorian-era adventure “King Solomon’s Mines.” In the original book, published in 1885, the hero travels to unexplored Africa in search of a friend’s lost brother, who was himself looking for the untold treasures hidden away in the king’s mines. The Hollywood Reporter ‘s Heat Vision blog reveals that in the update, Worthington’s Quatermain returns to planet Earth after spending time away in outer space. Humans are gone, but the hero is back for another ” ‘King Solomon’s Mines’-style adventure but on a planetwide scale.” “Quatermain” was first revealed as a DreamWorks project last year, with “Timecop” writer Mark Verheiden penning a sci-fi-angled script. Quatermain has had a number of big screen portrayals, most recently by Sean Michael in the 2008 direct-to-video “Allan Quatermain and the Temple of Skulls,” released by the Asylum, the studio behind “Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus.” Sean Connery took on the character in 2003’s “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” as part of a super-team of literary heroes that included Captain Nemo, Tom Sawyer and the Invisible Man. Patrick Swayze played Quatermain a year later in the two-part TV miniseries re-telling “King Solomon’s Mines.” Worthington will produce with “Smallville” executive producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. No director has been named, though the film will presumably be built off of Verheiden’s script. Did you like Sam Worthington in “Avatar”? Do you think he’ll make a good treasure hunter?
