Get Your Charity Together: Wyclef Put On Blast Once Again About What Yele Haiti Is Doing With Their Donors’ Money

The mayor of the city of North Miami may have thought Wyclef ‘s do-gooder-ness was worthy of recognition last week, but people are stil giving him and his Yele Haiti foundation the side-eye. Yele Haiti’s coffers swelled to $16 million in 2010, the most the charity had ever received. But less than a third of that went to emergency efforts, and $1 million was paid to a Florida firm that doesn’t seem to exist, The Post has learned. Jean’s charity, which he founded in 2005 with his cousin Jerry Duplessis, was already troubled when the earthquake struck Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010. The Post reported in 2008 that it had never filed a required tax form detailing its spending with the IRS. The group lost $244,000 in 2009. But hours after the earthquake hit, Jean took to Twitter to beg for $5 donations. An avalanche of donations poured in. Almost immediately, allegations surfaced that the former Fugees singer had used the charity’s cash for his own benefit. Critics found that four years earlier Yele Haiti had steered $250,000 to a Haitian TV station controlled by Jean and Duplessis. Jean held a Jan. 18, 2010, press conference to tearfully defend Yele Haiti’s reputation. “Have we made mistakes before? Yes,” Jean said. “Did I ever use Yele money for personal benefits? Absolutely not. Yele’s books are open and transparent.” The earthquake killed between 200,000 and 300,000 Haitians and left a million homeless. The country is still in the grip of a cholera epidemic. For all the desperation, records show that Yele Haiti spent just $5.1 million for emergency relief efforts, including food and water delivery to makeshift survivor camps, according to a review of the charity’s 2010 tax filings, which were obtained by The Post. Yele Haiti paid five contractors to accomplish its goals, including P&A Construction — which received $353,983 and is run by Warnel Pierre, the brother of Jean’s wife, Claudinette. A purported Miami business called Amisphere Farm Labor Inc. received a whopping $1,008,000 as a “food distributor.” No trace of the company could be found last week in the Sunshine State, but records show the company’s head, Amsterly Pierre, bought three properties in Florida last year, including a condo in an upscale waterfront community. The firm incorporated in August 2008 but never filed any of the subsequent financial paperwork required to do business in Florida, according to the Florida Department of State. The address listed for the business is an auto-repair shop in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, where a worker said he had never heard of Pierre or Amisphere. Pierre did not return a call for comment. Yele Haiti also paid $577,185 to a company called Samosa SA, based in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, as a “bulk water supplier.” But some of that money went to rent a house for Yele Haiti volunteers on Samosa’s property at the inflated price of $35,000 a month. “Given the fact that Yele Haiti was involved in a swirl of controversy after the earthquake in Haiti, it’s all the more reason to be more transparent to ensure donors that their funds are going to help people,” said the Better Business Bureau’s Bennett Weiner. In Clef’s defense, a lot of charities’ hands have been tied by red tape and political BS in Haiti following the earthquake, due to the fact that the outbound government at the time wasn’t necessarily all that interested in seeing the country move forward. Yele also wouldn’t be the first American-based charity to partner with people who didn’t necessarily have the best intentions when it came to actually helping Haiti. But you would think, at this point, Wyclef would do a better job of covering his a$$ and making sure everything he and Yele did was on the money… Source

Wyclef Serenades His Teacher, On ‘When I Was 17’

Former Fugees singer recalls trying to get out of summer school on the latest episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. By Dionne Buxton Wyclef Jean on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV Before Wyclef Jean began his quest to conquer hunger in Haiti, he had to get past his first obstacle: Mrs. Serrato. On this week’s episode of “When I Was 17,” premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV, Wyclef speaks candidly about the trials he had to overcome to shape him into the multifaceted man he is today. Graduation time had arrived and Wyclef was ready to get fitted for his gown when his high school guidance counselor told him he was wasting his time. “So I’m going to get sized up, and they’re like, ‘Well, it’s not necessary for you to get sized up, because there’s one class you have to finish in summer school,’ ” he recalled. “I’m like, ‘What?’ ” He soon found out that he had earned an F in Algebra 2, and in order for him to walk with his classmates, his teacher had to change his grade. So Wyclef — being the out-of-the-box thinker he is — decided an apple wasn’t enough to win his teach over: He had to do what he does best to persuade Mrs. Serrato to give him a better grade. “At 17, there’s a certain confidence that you have,” Wyclef said. “So I was like, ‘If I sing a song for this woman, she’s gonna melt and I’m gonna get a D and I’mma pass the course.’ ” Wyclef grabbed his guitar and waltzed into his math class with an original song. “I was like, ‘I just wrote a song for you and I would just like to share it with you.’ ” Did Wyclef’s swoon tactic work? Find out when the former Fugees member appears on Saturday’s “When I Was 17.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Wyclef Jean and “Awkward” star Ashley Rickards — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. Pitbull And Wyclef Get Fit With Zumba

‘You go up there and you’re like, ‘Man I need to be a part of that,’ ‘ Pit tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Pitbull Photo: MTV News Pitbull and Wyclef Jean may have their roots in hip-hop, but through the years, both performers have garnered worldwide appeal and conquered multiple musical genres. Recently, both artists linked up with choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez and contributed to his Latin dance-inspired Zumba fitness program. “You see my stage shows, you see me flying through the air, backflips, doing all kinds of stuff. Zumba for me is natural, because it’s exercising and dancing without feeling it,” ‘Clef told MTV News last week at the Zumba Fitness convention in Orlando, Florida. Zumba was conceived by the Colombia-born Perez in the 1990s using dance to promote physical health. Combining musical elements like hip-hop, samba, salsa, meringue, mambo and even a bit of belly dancing, Perez’s program has grown into one of the hottest fitness crazes in gyms across the world. The Fugees producer partnered up with Zumba, and now his single “Historia” has been included as an official Zumba track that instructors use to teach their classes fitness through choreography. Pitbull’s “Pause,” a track from his recently released album Planet Pit, is also part of the Zumba playlist. “The way Zumba has done it is taken all those things that maybe we’ve all learned from different countries and put it into a form where it’s global now,” Pit told MTV News. “Same thing we’ve done with music, so that’s why I think they both ride parallel and they coincide.” During last week’s convention, both Pit and ‘Clef performed for 7,000 Zumba instructors, who moved in sync with the dancers onstage to specific Zumba choreography. “I’m up there and I’m rocking and 7,000 instructors are doing the exact moves to a song that I composed. I can’t even explain to you what that feels like,” Wyclef said. “That’s incredible.” While a rapper getting down with a fitness program may seem strange to some, Pitbull insists that the Zumba vibe is infectious. “It’s not someone looking like, ‘Man, what’s Pitbull up there doing exercise?’ ” he said. “Nah, you go up there and you’re like, ‘Man, I need to be a part of that.’ ” Jean agrees, pointing out that Zumba’s many cultural elements adds to its strength. “If it’s hot in Brazil, it’s hot in Afghanistan, it’s hot in Jerusalem, it’s hot in Flatbush [Brooklyn, New York]. It all should be on that one CD and we all should be able to rock with it,” he said. “And that’s why I’m into the Zumba movement.” Have you ever tried Zumba? Let us know in the comments! Wyclef Jean Shot, Hospitalized in Haiti

Hip-hop star and activist Wyclef Jean has been released from a hospital in his native Haiti after being treated for a gunshot wound to the hand Saturday. Joe Mignon, a director of Jean’s Yele Foundation, says Jean was shot in the hand after 11 p.m. in Delmas, outside the capital of Port-au-Prince. Jean’s brother, Samuel, confirmed the musician was shot. Neither he nor Mignon had additional details regarding why, but he will recover fully. Wyclef’s shooting comes on the eve of presidential elections in Haiti. Jean, who planned to run for the presidency before being disallowed due to Haiti’s residency requirement, is supporting fellow musician Michel Martelly. A spokesman for the Haitian National Police could not be immediately reached for comment regarding Wyclef’s shooting . But, fortunately, he’s alright. “He is doing well,” Jean’s publicist Cindy Tanenbaum tells CNN, also describing the wound suffered by the former Fugees member as “superficial.”
