Sean Penn Responds to Wyclef Jean’s Dis

Actor denies drug allegations that rapper made while freestyling at a concert on Friday. By Gil Kaufman Wyclef Jean and Sean Penn Photo: Getty Images Back in his Hollywood “Bad Boys” days, Sean Penn might have reacted to a harsh dis with his fists instead of his words. But Penn took the high road over the Labor Day holiday weekend, releasing a measured response to a harsh lyrical attack from former Fugees leader Wyclef Jean as the two continued their public sparring match over ‘Clef’s failed bid to run for the presidency of Haiti . “Mr. Jean is clearly unfamiliar with the physical demands put upon volunteers in Haiti,” read the statement, which was released by a spokesperson for Penn. “As aid workers there, the notion of depleting the body’s immune system thru the use of illicit drugs is ludicrous.” The letter was in part a response to some new lyrics Jean threw down at Hot 97’s On Da Reggae Tip concert in New York on Friday. He switched up the verses to his 2004 song “President” in order to take aim at Penn and his former Fugees bandmate Pras, who both questioned Wyclef’s fitness to run earthquake-ravaged Haiti. “I got a message for Sean Penn: Maybe he ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine,” Jean sang at the show on Friday, adding, “I got a message for Praswell, even though you don’t want to support me, I got love for you, even though you only kicked eight bars in the Fugees.” Penn, who has lived in a tent in Haiti since just after January’s earthquake, also used his statement to explain to ‘Clef exactly what he’s been doing on the ground and why the lyrical roundhouse failed to connect. “More specifically, J/P Haitian Relief Organization (a.k.a. JPHRO) has a ZERO tolerance policy for any and all illegal drugs,” Penn’s statement said, referring to the non-governmental organization the actor co-founded to help the island just hours after the quake hit. “As the leader of this organization, Sean Penn has not only set this policy, but adheres to it. That Mr. Jean would make such a false accusation is reckless and saddening, but not surprising.” When Jean spoke about his plans to run for Haiti’s head of state on CNN’s “Larry King Live” in August, Penn, who was also a guest on the show, expressed concerns about the singer’s motivations for seeking political office. “Right now, I worry that this is a campaign that is more about a vision of flying around the world, talking to people. It’s certainly not one of the youth drafting him. I would be quite sure that this is an influence of corporations here in the United States and private individuals that may well have capitalized on his will to see himself flying around the world,” Penn said. The actor also wrote in a Huffington Post column that despite Jean’s public support for the island nation, the MC wasn’t around during critical moments after Haiti’s devastating January earthquake. “I was there for those six months after the earthquake and so many of us on the ground wondered where he was when that kind of attention was so necessary and absent, and why he was NOT helping to keep this desperate situation in the news,” he wrote. “None among us felt or expressed anger toward it, but rather a universal sadness for his silence, as he is America’s most admired cultural link to Haiti.” Related Artists Wyclef Jean

Wyclef Jean Vows To Fight Exclusion From Haitian Presidential Election

‘I cannot in good conscience give up my quest to lead Haiti to the greatness I know we are capable of,’ he said in a statement. By Gil Kaufman Wyclef Jean Photo: Joe Raedle/ Getty Images Wyclef Jean was dealt a harsh setback on Friday when his name was left off a list of potential candidates in the upcoming presidential election in Haiti. But the rapper and humanitarian vowed over the weekend to fight the ruling that declared him ineligible to run in the November 28 election. “After careful consideration and much soul-searching, I have made the decision to contest Haiti’s board of election’s pronouncement stating that I am ineligible to run for the presidency of the country,” he said in a statement issued on Sunday afternoon. “I will be seeking a solution through legal channels, and I urge my countrymen to be patient through this process. ” According to The Associated Press, Clef was slated to go to Haitian court on Monday (August 23) with his lawyers to appeal the decision before the national election dispute office. Jean told the AP on Sunday that he has a document that shows “everything is correct” with his presidential bid and that he and his aides suspect that his exclusion “has everything to do with Haitian politics” and not his legal eligibility for the position. Though the election board did not specify why it rejected the former Fugees leader’s bid, it is presumed it was because he did not meet the country’s residency requirements, which state that a candidate must live in the country for five years. Wyclef, who left Haiti with his family to live in New York at the age of 9, said on CNN that he was running because he felt he had been “drafted by the population” in the wake of the country’s devastating January earthquake. “After January 12 … being out here with my wife and picking up dead bodies from the ground, I felt that because of the youth of Haiti and the population, that this is not even Wyclef saying that ‘I want to be the president of Haiti.’ I feel like I’m being drafted by the population right now to give them a different face, a different voice,” the singer explained. “In the 36 hours since the board’s decision, I have been in constant conversation with my family, friends and advisers, and reading the comments of good people and supporters throughout the Haitian diaspora,” he said in his weekend statement. “I’ve also been closely monitoring the situation on the ground, which I am happy to report has remained peaceful and thoughtful. I, along with my supporters, am deeply disappointed that I have been denied the chance to present my candidacy to Haiti’s voters. I want to continue in my efforts to always keep Haiti top of mind for the world — I don’t want to give anyone the chance to forget the earthquake victims, or my impoverished homeland, rich only in human potential and kindness. “These factors, and more, inspire me now. I am heartened by the world’s focus on Haiti and its needs, as well as the great spirit of the Haitian people — my people, and I cannot in good conscience give up my quest to lead Haiti to the greatness I know in my heart we are capable of reaching. I cannot surrender now, simply because an obstacle has been set before me; now is the time I must stand up and show Haiti — and the world — that my vision of a nation renewed and redeveloped is a vision for which I am willing to fight.” The “If I Was President” singer, whose candidacy was questioned by his former Fugees bandmate Pras , was one of 34 people vying to replace Haitian president Ren

Wyclef Jean Presidential Bid Squashed By Haiti Officials

‘Though I disagree with the ruling, I respectfully accept the committee’s final decision,’ Jean says. By Mawuse Ziegbe Wyclef Jean Photo: Steve Mack/ Getty Images Wyclef Jean is officially out of the running to be Haiti’s next president. Haitian election officials put the kibosh on the musician’s bid to lead the troubled island nation, according to The Associated Press. “Though I disagree with the ruling, I respectfully accept the committee’s final decision, and I urge my supporters to do the same,” Jean said in a statement. “I want to assure my countrymen that I will continue to work for Haiti’s renewal; though the board has determined that I am not a resident of Haiti, home is where the heart is — and my heart has and will always be in Haiti.” The Haitian electoral council reportedly did not reveal why Jean was found ineligible to become an official candidate, but the singer has been dogged by questions about his status as a resident of Haiti. The news comes after recent reports indicated that Jean was not on the approved list of candidates for the November 28 election. Jean’s attempt to become president of Haiti has been a brief but memorable endeavor. After speculation that the Grammy-winning artist would seek political office reached a fever pitch, Jean announced his intention to run for president on August 5 on CNN’s “Larry King Live.” The MC said that he was inspired to enter the political arena after witnessing the devastating effects of the January earthquake that has ravaged the nation. “After January 12 … being out here with my wife and picking up dead bodies from the ground, I felt that because of the youth of Haiti and the population, that this is not even Wyclef saying that ‘I want to be the president of Haiti.’ I feel like I’m being drafted by the population right now to give them a different face, a different voice,” Jean said. However, Jean’s political aspirations were quickly questioned by high-profile critics such as actor Sean Penn and Jean’s former Fugees bandmate Pras. Pras told MTV News that he didn’t believe the chart-topping artist had the experience to guide the country through its range of complex issues. “He talks about health care, he talks about education, he talks about infrastructure,” Pras said. “But that’s in any society. That’s right here in America, we need that. But how are you gonna get to that point? There’s a short-term goal that needs to be addressed and there’s a long-term goal. To be honest with you, the short term is probably more important than the long term. And he didn’t even mention the short term.” How do you feel now that Wyclef won’t be Haiti’s next president? Pras Explains Endorsing Wyclef Presidential Rival

‘The reality is we need a real leader … a transformative leader,’ onetime Fugees bandmate tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez Pras Photo: MTV News Wyclef Jean has now formally announced to fanfare that he’ll run for the presidency of Haiti . But for all of the support coming his way, the musician didn’t manage to receive the endorsement of one of his former Fugees groupmembers. Pras has endorsed rival candidate Michel Martelly, telling MTV News on Friday (August 6) that Martelly is better equipped to revive the ravaged country. Pras stressed his appreciation for Wyclef’s efforts to aid Haiti but said he simply thinks his friend would be in over his head. “Basically, I went down to Haiti yesterday to endorse a friend of mine named Michel Martelly. He’s an ex-musician, very, very popular down in Haiti,” Pras explained. “He used to go by the name “Sweet Micky.” “Listen, I love Wyclef to death, he continued. “We came up together, we grew up together, we basically called each other cousins. But the reality is this, we need a real leader. Not just a regular leader, but a transformative leader. Someone that’s gonna be able to galvanize the Haitians down on the field, the Haitian-Americans, the international community, it’s a collective support — to take this country to the 21st century. And I’m just not convinced Wyclef is the one for that.” Pras was particularly effusive in praising Wyclef for bringing global attention to Haiti in the wake of the country’s debilitating earthquake this past January. “But that does not mean he can become the next president of Haiti,” Pras said. ‘Clef formally declared his run for president during an appearance Thursday night on CNN’s “Larry King Live.” “If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as president,” Wyclef said in the interview, “then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything.” He pushed his political neutrality as an asset; Haiti has long been dominated by corrupt government regimes. Pras said he became aware in July that Wyclef had Haiti’s elections on his mind, though he didn’t think his friend would seriously contemplate running himself. Rather, Pras thought Wycelf would endorse his own uncle, who has served in an ambassador post to Haiti, in Washington D.C., in the past. Pras also revealed he hadn’t spoken directly to Wyclef before he made public his endorsement of Martelly. Representatives for Wyclef had not responded to MTV News’ requests for comment at press time. Sean Penn Questions Wyclef Jean Presidential Campaign

Earlier today, Wyclef Jean officially kicked off his campaign to be the next President of Haiti . But the singer already faces opposition from an Oscar winner and well-known activist in the region: Sean Penn. Asked by Larry King for his take on Jean’s political ambitions, Penn cited allegations that Wyclef mishandled $400,000 in earthquake-relief donations and said the artist has been absent from his native country. “This is somebody who’s going to receive an enormous amount of support from the United States, and I have to say I’m very suspicious of it,” said Penn, who runs a 55,000-person tent camp via his J/P Haitian Relief Organization, adding: “I’m not accusing Wyclef Jean of being an opportunist; I don’t know the man. One of the reasons I don’t know very much about Wyclef Jean is that I haven’t seen or heard anything of him in these last six months that I’ve been in Haiti.” Wyclef didn’t respond by claiming he’s been active in the nation itself, but instead says he’s perfect for the position because he understands “the psychology of the Haitian people.” “What I want Sean Penn to know is, if I was not in Haiti after [former president] Jean-Bertrand Aristide left, if I did not create [my charity] Y

Wyclef Jean Says Earthquake Motivated Presidential Run

‘The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years’ for leadership, ‘Clef says. By Gil Kaufman Wyclef Jean Photo: Michelly Rall/ Getty Images Although he’s not expected to officially announce his plans to run for president of Haiti until a Thursday night (August 5) appearance on “Larry King Live,” Wyclef Jean has given a number of interviews this week in the lead-up to the confirmation, explaining his motivation for seeking one of the most challenging jobs in the Western hemisphere. “If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this,” Jean told Time magazine. “The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century.” The January 12 quake, which killed more than 200,000 and left nearly 2 million homeless, flipped a switch in the rapper, who was born in Haiti and raised in Brooklyn. The devastation he saw in the days and weeks that followed as he helped on the ground in flattened capital Port-au-Prince to save lives made him realize that there is no contradiction between his artistic and political ambitions. “If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as President,” he said, “then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything.” The filing deadline for the November 28 election is Saturday (August 7) and Jean — who once recorded a tune called “If I Was President” — plans to make a splash on King’s CNN show in order to kick off his campaign with a bang. In a country where half the population of 9 million is under the age of 25, Jean’s musical pedigree will surely be a huge asset to his campaign, and his celebrity promises to keep the often-wandering eye of the international press on his country’s most urgent needs. “The suffering of the people of Haiti, the youth of Haiti — which is the majority of the population — can’t take another five years of the corruption that’s been going on for the past 200 years. This is why I’m running,” Jean told People magazine. The 37-year-old married father said he’s aware that cynics will question the motivation for his run, his lack of political experience and the reports of financial impropriety within his Y
