Pua Magasiva Dies; Power Rangers Star Was Only 38

Pua Magasiva, an actor who has starred in multiple Power Rangers television shows, as well as the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street, sadly passed away this. He was 38 years old. Details about what transpired are still being made known, but here is what we’ve learned so far: The New Zealand Herald writes that police were called to a home in Wellington, New Zealand early on Saturday morning… where they found Magasiva unresponsive. An official spokesperson for the police department told the newspaper that they found “no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death,” and that it would soon be referring the case to the coroner. Magasiva portrayed the Shane Clarke, the Red Wind Ranger, in “Power Rangers Ninja Storm,” which marked the 11th television installment of the popular superhero franchise. The Samoan-born actor had also appeared as nurse Vinnie Kruse in hundreds of episodes of “Shortland Street,” one of New Zealand’s most popular daytime dramas. He debuted in the role in 2003, at the height of his fame, and has starred in the show since his return in 2012. “We are all absolutely devastated at the tragic news regarding Pua Magasiva,” the soap opera’s production company wrote on social media Saturday, adding: “Pua was a much loved member of the South Pacific Pictures’ family for many years and our hearts and thoughts go out to Pua’s family at this time.” For Magasiva, this family is comprised of wife Lizz Sadler, a seven-year-old daughter from his previous marriage; and his brother Robbie. (Sadler also has a daughter from a previous relationship.) Magasiva and Sadler got married last April, nearly 10 months after meeting in October of 2016, according to Flava, a New Zealand radio station where Magasiva had co-hosted a morning show prior to his death. The pair had met after Sadler began following the actor on Instagram. “Family is everything! Through the struggles, troubles through it all they will always be there for you… I love you all to the moon and back #mylove,” wrote Magasiva as a caption to the sweet photo above last April. He last posted to Instagram several days prior to his death, when he and his loved ones took a trip together outside Wellington. This photo is from that vacation: Wrote Power Rangers co-star Jason Chan on Facebook after this tragic news went public: “Incredibly sad to hear that one of our ranger family is gone. It will never be the same again. PUA you will be so dearly missed. “You were the center of energy on set and off. Always laughing, giggling and involved in practical jokes.” Added Shane Cortese, one of Magasiva’s co-stars from the television program Outrageous Fortune: My heart goes out to the Magasiva family and the extended television alumni who had the honor of seeing the glint in his eye and the sound of his hearty laugh close hand.RIP my friend #puamagasiva @ShortlandTweet. May Pua Magasiva rest in peace. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2019: In Memoriam

Yasuke—who was uprooted from his homeland and forced into slavery—is believed to be the first Black man to enter Japan. The movie chronicles the cultivation of a friendship between him and a warlord named Oda Nobunaga. After building a friendship Nobunaga honored Yasuke with the samurai title; one of the highest honors in Japanese culture. Doug Miro will serve as a writer for the film and it is being produced by Mike De Luca , Stephen L’Heureux , Logan Coles and Boseman. Boseman is excited to use his artistry as an avenue to bring Yasuke’s story to the forefront. “The legend of Yasuke is one of history’s best kept secrets, the only person of non-Asian origin to become a Samurai,” he said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “That’s not just an action movie, that’s a cultural event, an exchange, and I am excited to be part of it.” There is no word on when the film is slated to be released. There have been a few efforts to shed light on Yasuke’s story through pieces of literature and a Netflix anime series produced and directed by LeSean Thomas featuring the voice of Lakeith Stanfield . M otherhood is full of love, selflessness, and sacrifices and a Michigan-based mom captured the essence of those three qualities when she made the decision to skip her own college graduation to attend her son’s commencement ceremony. Sharonda Wilson ’s choice to miss out on a major milestone to support her son Stephan did not go unappreciated or overlooked. According to ABC News , he ensured that she got the opportunity to walk across the graduation stage and she received her degree at his graduation. After learning that his mom planned on skipping her own graduation to be at his commencement ceremony, Stephan was inclined to do something special for her. He connected with a friend who worked with Central Michigan University President Bob Davies . Davies then connected with senior leadership at Ferris State University to get permission to award Wilson with her degree. All of this happened hours before the graduation was slated to take place. “My mom is a selfless person,” Stephan said in a statement. “I wouldn’t have been [at graduation] without her. That is the honest truth.” While sitting in her seat getting ready to cheer her child on for his educational accomplishment, to Wilson’s surprise she was called to the stage and Davies awarded her with her hard-earned bachelor’s of science in business administration. 23-year-old Stephan—who majored in fine arts— was moved to tears. Davies told CNN that he was grateful to be able to create that special moment for Sharonda and her son. “Sharonda and Stephan both put in the long hours and hard work, and they deserved the chance to celebrate together as a family,” he said. “We appreciated the opportunity to partner with our friends at Ferris State to recognize and celebrate this milestone achievement for both Stephan and Sharonda.” SEE ALSO: 99-Year-Old Black Woman Veteran Gets Second Chance To Walk Across Graduation Stage Teen Becomes St. Thomas High School’s First-Ever Black Valedictorian [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3852226″ overlay=”true”]

Chicago Gets Its First Black-Owned Urgent Care Facility

See the original post:

B lack doctors are making power moves in medicine. According to the Chicago Crusader , a group of African American medical professionals joined forces to open up Chicago’s only Black-owned urgent care facility. They just opened the first Black owned urgent care facility on the south side of Chicago. https://t.co/OnUEIvKAeb — #becauseofthemwecan (@Becauseofthem) May 9, 2019 The center—dubbed Premier Health Urgent Care—is the only one of its kind in the Hyde Park community. It was a collaborative effort between Reuben C. Rutland, MD , Airron Richardson, MD , Michael A. McGee, MD , and former NFL player Dr. Gregory Primus . Aware of the lack of access to adequate health services, they were determined to cultivate a space where individuals can receive proper care and support. The center goes beyond providing urgent care, it has mental health and wellness services as well. “We are happy to open an urgent care in Hyde Park because the community needs it. I see so many urban professionals who either delay or go without care because of time constraints. No one has 8 hours to wait in the emergency department for a minor illness or the flexibility to wait 3 weeks because their primary care doctor is booked solid. We are here to help fill that gap,” Dr. Rutland said in a statement. “We are not in competition with the doctors’ offices or the emergency department. We are a supplement to them both, to help relieve the stress on those two facilities.” The founders are also using the center as an avenue to combat violence in Chicago. They will give some of its profits to an organization called Project Outreach and Prevention which develops programming for at-risk youth in an effort to keep them off the streets and on the right track. There are several Black medical professionals launching urgent care centers designed to help individuals from underserved communities. In 2018, Dr. Tamara Moise and Wadson Fils opened the doors to Big Apple Urgent Care, Brooklyn’s first Black-owned urgent care center.
