Eminem And Jay-Z Announce Hometown Stadium Shows

The hip-hop titans will appear at Detroit’s Comerica Park and New York’s Yankee Stadium in September. By Josh Wigler Jay-Z and Eminem Photo: Getty Images/Film Majic Supporters of both the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers are about to meet some unexpected new mascots in the form of rappers Eminem and Jay-Z. The two hip-hop titans have announced a two-part concert event to be held at each of their hometown’s own baseball stadiums. Eminem will headline a concert on Thursday (September 2) at Comerica Park in Detroit as the Tigers slug it out in Minnesota, while Jay-Z will represent New York at Yankee Stadium on Monday (September 13) as the home team hits the road for Florida. The two-night concert event will be produced by Live Nation. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime set of shows and I know we’re both really going to bring it to our hometowns,” Eminem said in a press release. “The fans are going to love this and so am I. It’s gonna be historic.” “These shows are like a dream come true,” Jay-Z offered. “I’ve always hoped that hip-hop could play any stadium like other genres of music. How perfect is it that Eminem and I get to play our hometowns and show how far the live rap experience has come? Fun and historic — a great combination all around the board.” Speaking with ESPN’s Dave O’Brien and Rick Sutcliffe during Wednesday’s game between the Yankees and the Tigers, Eminem said of the event , “We had talked about doing something together again soon anyway — we just tried to come up with the best way and biggest way to do it. “We’ve done things together, smaller shows and whatnot,” he continued. “But I’m not sure we’ve ever done anything this big.” “I look for opportunities to work with Em,” Jay-Z added. “Any time we get a chance to collaborate on things …” Ticket information for the event is currently unavailable. Ice Cube’s ‘Straight Outta L.A.’ Documentary Premieres On ESPN

Rapper directed film about the 1980s Oakland Raiders and their influence on hip-hop culture in South-Central L.A. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Ice Cube Photo: Columbia When it comes to Ice Cube’s place in hip-hop history, he’ll be remembered for three distinct things: his scowl, his jerry curl and his black Los Angeles Raiders cap. Specifically, the legendary N.W.A. lyricist made the brooding football team’s logo — an eye-patched pirate adorned in silver and black with crossed swords in the background — a symbol in rap lore, long before Jay-Z did the same years later with the Yankees fitted hat. And in Cube’s documentary, “Straight Outta L.A.,” the veteran MC combines his two loves, rap and the Raiders, and delivers an insightful examination the tangled rise of two multimillion-dollar franchises, the Raiders and gangsta rap. “Nothing impacted my life more than the Raiders moving to L.A.,” Ice Cube told MTV News of the controversial relocation of the Oakland team in 1982. “Being in N.W.A. [at the time], we were trying to figure out what we were going to do to let people know we were a group. So we decided to wear [all] black. Then I started wearing the Raiders hats. Then, next thing you know, Eazy would show up in Raiders gear. It just became a thing.” In the production, premiering Tuesday night (May 11) on ESPN as part of their “30 for 30” film series, Cube weaves the story of the outlaw Raiders team, which won a championship with their tough style, and the poverty-stricken Southern California that spawned acts like N.W.A. The attitude players like Howie Long and Marcus Allen brought every Sunday helped power the swagger of a young Cube, Eazy-E and Dr. Dre. “That team represented the L.A. I knew,” Cube explained. “It wasn’t the ‘Showtime’ Lakers, where people saw the glitz and the glamour. It wasn’t the ’84 Olympics. It was a little more grimy, and the Raiders represented that, in South Central [where they played]. They had the whole city on lock. To me, [this project] is the true representation of music and sports.” Are you excited to watch the Ice Cube-directed “Straight Outta L.A.” documentary? Let us know in the comments! Peter Steele’s Type O Negative Bandmates, Family React To Death

Bandmates say Steele ‘had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health’ before his death. By Gil Kaufman Type O Negative in 1999 Photo: Jim Steinfeldt/ Getty Images After years of struggling with substance abuse and health issues, Type O Negative singer/bassist Peter Steele was in a good place before his sudden death, his bandmates said. The towering frontman died at age 48 on Wednesday from apparent heart failure. “It is with great sadness that we inform you that Type O Negative frontman, bassist and our bandmate, Peter Steele passed away last night of what appears to be heart failure,” keyboardist Josh Silver, guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer Johnny Kelly, the grief-stricken rockers said in a statement on their Web site . “Ironically Peter had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health and was imminently due to begin writing and recording new music for our follow up to Dead Again released in 2007.” The group said an official cause of death has not been determined, pending autopsy results, and that funeral services will be private, with a possible public memorial at some point. “We are truly saddened to lose our friend and appreciate the tremendous outpouring today from around the world,” the trio wrote. Each man then wrote his own personal remembrance of the quixotic metal frontman. Silver, in particular, seemed torn by the loss of his close friend and frequent musical foil. “Peter, My endless source of frustration, (as I’m yours) you have really done it this time,” Silver wrote. “You have changed and touched countless lives through music, comedy and often brutal honesty. You’ve made life both interesting and irritating and I could not imagine not having known you for 37 years. It still isn’t true in my mind but in time I will miss you and the creating that we all endured together. We certainly disagreed constantly and I believe (and hope) we all learned from each other. Should I call you my brother, friend or neighbor? I can only call you Peter (and usually after 2 p.m.). We laughed at ourselves more times then I can count. Knowing humans are preposterous creatures and I know we reveled in that fact. I will miss you in time, but at this moment your premature departure seems surreal and has pissed me off to no end. Though I never told you that I harbor a deep respect for you, I do. Goodbye my friend.” Hickey called Steele one of the most brilliant and funny personalities in music, saying his humor and talent were 100 percent real. “Half the time people thought he was joking, but he was actually telling the truth,” he wrote. “Part of me died with him.” Kelly found it hard to put his grief into words, admitting, “I’m not sure if I should eulogize or roast you. Both good and bad, we went on one hell of a ride together and sadly, the ride has come to an end. You truly were a unique person. Your music touched many people. Myself included. Whether it was talking about the Beatles, power tools, how Pluto was no longer considered a planet or calling me at 3 a.m. asking me to drive to your house to have a fistfight with you, you always kept it interesting. It was a privilege to have been your bandmate. It’s something that I will always cherish.” Steele’s family also released a statement, confirming that the singer died after a short illness, though no details were given on what the health issue was. “The music world has lost a great talent, and music fans worldwide are mourning, but for our family we are mourning a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, friend and funny man,” the statement said. “Peter Steele was a complex man, known for his brooding looks, his self-deprecating sense of humor, unique view of the world, and most of all his loyalty to his fans, friends and family. Survived by five sisters, the eldest living sister notes that he was more than our brother, he was our son. His untimely death is tragic — a great loss to us and to music.” Related Videos Remembering Type O Negative’s Peter Steele Related Photos Peter Steele: A Life In Photos Related Artists Type O Negative

Jay-Z Sues Red Sox Player David Ortiz Over Dominican 40/40 Club

Rapper claims slugger’s Forty-Forty infringes on Jay’s chain of nightclubs. By Gil Kaufman Jay-Z Photo: Bennett Raglin/ WireImage We all know Jay-Z is a huge sports fan, but he’s also a serious businessman. And he certainly doesn’t appreciate people stepping on his enterprise. That explains why, according to The Associated Press, Jay and one of his business partners filed suit on Thursday in Manhattan Federal Court against Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, claiming that a nightclub opened by Big Papi in his native Dominican Republic infringes on Jay’s 40/40 club concept. The $5 million suit accuses Ortiz of naming his Santo Domingo club Forty-Forty — a reference to 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases — in the hopes of drafting off the popularity of the chain of 40/40 clubs owned by Jay in New York, Las Vegas, Chicago, Tokyo, Macau and Atlantic City. (Ortiz has stolen only 10 bases in his career and is not a member of the elite 40/40 club of baseball players.) “David Ortiz is fully aware of Plaintiff’s Manhattan 40/40 club, since he had been a patron there on several occasions before he opened his infringing Forty/Forty club,” the lawsuit states about the slugger, who often comes to bat to the strains of Jay’s “Hey Papi.” The suit is seeking $5 million in damages and asks for Ortiz to stop using the 40/40 name. The New York Daily News quoted Jay’s lawyer, Peter Raymond, saying that the similarly named clubs are not a mere coincidence. “David Ortiz was at the club at least twice, and certainly knew of it,” Raymond said. The suit claims Ortiz visited Jay’s club when the Red Sox were in town to play the Yankees and was there during the All-Star Game celebration as well. The suit reportedly also includes photos of Ortiz partying at 40/40. Related Artists Jay-Z
