Lupe Fiasco Wants Lasers To Take Him To ‘Another Level’

‘If we’re gonna go and try to get on radio … there’s a certain format that you have to fit to do that,’ he tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez Lupe Fiasco Photo: MTV News Lupe Fiasco is undoubtedly one of the most talented MCs in hip-hop, but he is still working to earn a place in the upper echelon of rap superstars. With the Chicago rapper’s third album, Lasers, out Tuesday (March 8), Lupe makes a leap in that direction. “For this record, being a more popular record and being the goal of this record from its inception, no matter what changes and phases and label battles that it went through, it was always about, ‘Let’s take it to another level,’ ” he told MTV News. “If we’re gonna go and try to get on radio, trying to capture that bigger audience, there’s a certain format that you have to fit to do that. That’s the growth that the fans want, the underrated things that the critics say. So to achieve those things, you have to play that [game]. You can’t say, ‘I wanna play for the Yankees,’ and you’re a football player. That’s not gonna work. You have to learn how to play baseball.”

Jay-Z’s Yankee Memorabilia Is A Home Run, Fans Say

‘The Yankees selling Jay-Z stuff is just the best of both worlds,’ one fan says of Hov endorsing limited-run apparel ahead of concerts with Eminem. By MTV News staff Jay-Z and Yankees merchandise at Yankee Stadium Photo: Rya Backer/ MTV News Jay-Z already has one clothing line in Rocawear, and now that the Brooklyn rapper has partnered with the Yankees to co-brand threads in anticipation of his and Eminem’s September concerts , does Hov have a new empire on his hands? Well, not quite, since the Jay-Z/Yankee pact is only for a limited time . But MTV News hit the Bronx to get the word on whether the partnership is a home run. “I thought it was pretty cool, I think it’s cool that he’s doing stuff with the Yankees,” Paulette Esparza told MTV News. “The design is cool.” The line features an array of T-shirts, jerseys with S. Carter and the number four printed on the back (Jay’s birthday is December 4) and a series of fitted hats, including an all-black Yankees cap with The Blueprint 3 insignia on the side. The memorabilia is on sale, only at Yankee Stadium, through September 14. Despite the limited run, interest in the items appears to be high. (It remained unclear at press time whether Eminem would strike a similar deal with his hometown Detroit Tigers baseball team.) “I really like the hat, the hat is pretty cool,” Lauren Mastroianni said while visiting the ballpark. “I was just about to say that,” her friend Mike Nalafronte chimed in about the fitted cap. “With the emblem on it, I like that.” The marriage between Jay-Z and the Yankees began last year as the storied baseball franchise marched toward the World Series, which they eventually captured over the Philadelphia Philles in six games last October. Jay’s “Empire State of Mind” (featuring Alicia Keys) became the unofficial anthem of the team after captain Derek Jeter used the track for his at-bat music. Jay-Z then performed the number with Alicia Keys before Game 2 in New York and later rode with the team during their championship parade. The song also became the rapper’s first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, and the Yankees earned their 27th championship. “The Yankees selling Jay-Z stuff is just the best of both worlds, isn’t it,” tourist Alex Matthewson noted. CC Sabathia Remembers An Epic Paint Fight On ‘When I Was 17’

‘I went and put a stripe on a girl’s shirt, and it turned into a big paint fight,’ the Yankees pitcher recalls. By James Montgomery CC Sabathia Photo: MTV News Back before he was throwing heat for the New York Yankees, CC Sabathia was throwing paint in the classrooms of Vallejo High School in California. And, as he explains on Saturday’s all-new episode of “When I Was 17,” he was just as good at it as he is at baseball. “I remember one time in my junior year, in my art class, our teacher had us doing, like, finger paints, and I went and put a stripe on a girl’s shirt, and it turned into a big paint fight,” he laughed. “Paint all over the walls, all over everybody. It was pretty fun. “The teacher was this short little lady, and she was screaming, ‘You guys, stop!’ and we kind of drowned her out,” Sabathia continued. “I did a lot of bad stuff, I guess.” But, luckily, it didn’t get much worse than flinging paint. Because back then, Sabathia — who stood 6-foot-6 and weighed 235 pounds and starred at not only baseball, but football and basketball too — could’ve done some serious damage. That wasn’t really in his nature, though, and pretty much everyone who knew him back at Vallejo High remembers him as “a big teddy bear.” Of course, there was another reason he never really misbehaved: his mother, Margie, who was waiting at home every day and was more than willing to keep CC in line. And, thankfully for him, she didn’t hear about the whole paint-fight incident until producers brought it up on “When I Was 17.” “Oh, man, I didn’t hear about that one,” she smiled. “See, there’s some things they keep from you!” Sorry, CC, hope we didn’t get you in too much trouble. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring CC, Ciara and Debi Nova — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner Dies

George Steinbrenner, who bought a declining New York Yankees team in 1973 and left an indelible mark on sports’ most storied franchise, has died. He was 80. In an often tumultuous reign, in which he promised to stay out of the team’s daily affairs but often did not, the Bronx Bombers won seven of their 27 titles. Just as impressively, he build the franchise into a global powerhouse valued at over $1 billion. Having retired to Tampa, Fla., he turned 80 this past July 4. A rep for the family said in a statement: “It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing . He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80.” George Steinbrenner, left, with former N.Y. City mayor Rudy Giuliani. “He was an incredible and charitable man. Funeral arrangements will be private. There will be an additional public service with details to be announced.” Steinbrenner’s death comes nine months after the Yankees won their first World Series title since 2000, beating the Phillies at the new Yankee Stadium. The magnate, whose infamous, blustering ways lessened considerably in recent years, had been in failing health since 2006, rarely appearing in public. Introduced at the inaugural game of the new stadium he constructed in April 2009, he received an ovation, at which point shoulders shook and he cried. Rest in peace, George.

Lady Gaga to Drop Album, Pants in 2011

Okay, we just made up the second part of the headline above. But based on her recent Yankee game spectacle , do you have any doubt that this is true? In the new issue of Rolling Stone, which features Lady Gaga in a machine gun bra on the cover, the “Poker Face” singer is looking forward to next year. She’s finished recording her newest album and is planning an early 2011 release, the name of which she will announce at midnight on New Year’s Eve. “I think I’m gonna get the album title tattooed on me and put out the photo,” she said. “I’ve been working on it for months, and I feel very strongly that it’s finished now. It came so quickly. Some artists take years; I don’t. I write music every day.” Lady Gaga displays her Yankees pride … and breasts . Gaga added that unlike her debut, The Fame , and 2009’s follow-up, The Fame Monster, the new disc will have more political, even angry overtones, tackling hot-button issues close to the crooner’s heart, such as gays in the military. “Why are we still talking about ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell?’ exclaimed Gaga to the magazine. “It’s like, what f*%king year is it? It just makes me crazy!” “I have been for three years baking cakes. Now I’m going to bake a cake that has a bitter jelly,” she adds. “The message of the new music is now more bitter than it was before. Because the sweeter the cake, the more bitter the jelly can be.” We don’t really follow, but we’re looking forward to another year of outrageous hit songs, videos, quotes and Lady Gaga hermaphrodite rumors.

Diamondbacks Lose Again: More Change On The Way?

The Diamondbacks lost to the Red Sox tonight, Boston completing the sweep of Arizona. That’s nothing new. In fact, it marked the visitors’ thirteenth consecutive defeat on the road – the last time they won away from Phoenix was exactly a month ago, beating the Marlins in Florida. Since Arizona came into being in 1998, there’s been only one longer streak by a National League club – Washington lost sixteen straight road games in 2008-09. It seems that the team is beginning a rebuilding process, with the trade to Oakland earlier this week of Conor Jackson, one of the longest-tenured Diamondbacks – only catcher Chris Snyder had been with the team longer. Dan Haren commented after the deal, “Nothing that happens from here on out would be a surprise to me… We understand that things have to change.” General Manager Josh Byrnes seems to agree, saying… “We aren’t where we need to be in the standings and as far as sort of the things we’d like to do to adjust the roster, there’s also payroll considerations as we try to sort of get ready for next year.” The word around baseball is that Kelly Johnson is perhaps the next Diamondback to be traded. He has been performing brilliantly this year, and could well be the team’s lone representative at the All-Star Game. This would encourage the team to sell high, and with Johnson’s club-friendly contract, as well as him being under team control for 2011 (his third arbitration year), there would seem to be potential for a decent haul. However, it might not stop there, with the club willing to listen to offers for almost anyone currently on the roster. The only “untouchables” would appear to be third-baseman Mark Reynolds, right-fielder Justin Upton and starting pitcher Ian Kennedy, who has an ERA+ of 127 in his first full season, and could quite possibly be the best of the chips traded between Arizona, Detroit and the Yankees over the winter. Otherwise, after finishing last in the NL West in 2009, and looking likely to do so again this season, the Diamondbacks appear ready to rip it up and start again, less than three years after reaching the National League Championship Series.
