From a feel-good rom com to a tear-jerking documentary, this festival has a variety of films we can’t wait to see. By Kevin P. Sullivan Robert DeNiro Photo: MTV News The Tribeca Film Festival is now upon us, and with so many films playing this year, it can be hard to parse what’s worth checking out. As festival founder Robert De Niro told MTV News, his goal each year is to fill the lineup with quality films. “The goals are the movies. Have good movies and good choices,” he said. “You can’t always get what you want, but we try to get the best things that are out there.” We’ve looked through the lineup and awarded superlatives to some of this year’s most talked-about movies at the Tribeca Film Festival. Most Promising Short Film: “Pitch Black Heist” Here’s a movie that features Michael Fassbender and Liam Cunningham, who play thieves looking to steal the contents of a safe. The catch is that the office that houses the safe is equipped with a light-sensitive alarm, so they must conduct the heist in total darkness. If that doesn’t persuade you to seek out this 14-minute short film, we’re not sure you like movies that much. Sundance Darling Award: “Searching for Sugar Man” This stranger-than-fiction documentary chronicles the life of Rodriguez, an unsuccessful but influential Mexican-American folk singer, who supposedly committed suicide on stage. The doc follows two filmmakers who decide to find out what happen to Rodriguez. “Searching for Sugar Man” earned rave reviews out of Sundance this past January, so expect the same from Tribeca. Best Superhero Movie: “The Avengers” (by default) Honestly, this wasn’t a very fair fight. Of course Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk are going to take the prize for Best Superhero Movie at an independent film festival. Though the movie doesn’t exactly fit in the lineup, Joss Whedon ‘s superhero extravaganza is New York to its very core, so what other film festival could host the event? Best Movie We’ve Already Seen: “The Five-Year Engagement” “The Five-Year Engagement” is the next effort from the guys who brought you “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “The Muppets,” Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller. Their new film has consistent belly laughs throughout and will leave you utterly charmed like no other rom-com in the past year. Segel and Emily Blunt both turn in believable performances that have you rooting for them from the first frame. Short Doc Most Likely To Make Us Cry: “Alekesam” “Alekesam” has a few key ingredients that make it a surefire weep-fest and a potentially huge hit at Tribeca. First, it’s the real-like story of a musician, Hugh Masekela, who is exiled from his homeland of South Africa during the apartheid. Secondly, after years away, he attempts to re-establish contact with the son he left behind. Yep, the tears are already coming. Doc Most Likely to Make Us Cry (Laughing Category): “Mansome” Thankfully, we have Morgan Spurlock and a cast of some of the world’s funniest men to cheer us up. “Mansome” is a look at the modern man’s grooming that features the likes of Zach Galifianakis, Will Arnett, Paul Rudd and Jason Bateman. Which movie from Tribeca Film Festival are you most excited to see? Let us know in the comments! Ahead of tonight’s official kick-off of the Tribeca Film Festival with the world premiere of Universal’s The Five-Year Engagement , festival brass reflected on the event’s 10 years — and its upcoming second decade — at a pre-launch mimosa (and bloody mary) breakfast event downtown where it all began in 2002. “It’s been many things since we started, but it’s always come back to community, discovery and innovation, which are our core values,” said TFF co-founder Jane Rosenthal. Her partner Robert De Niro — one of Tribeca’s biggest trump cards in terms of public exposure — made a salutary drive-by today as well, quickly introducing the festival’s revamped programming team before shuffling off. “It’s best to let the programmers speak,” he said. “We’re excited for this year’s festival and ready for our next decade,” Tribeca Enterprises creative director Geoff Gilmore said to the gathering of about 100 people. “The biggest change here has been the programmers, but you’ll see major range and diversity in this year’s lineup.” Range and Diversity and a ‘Wild Ride’… Though the festival has become more streamlined compared to five years ago — when it screened about 120 features compared to this year’s 90 or so — Tribeca’s programmers describe this year’s lineup as a “balance” that showcases American and foreign work, reflected in the festival’s seven sections. “The competition is a snapshot of the range of the program,” said Genna Terranova, TFF Director of Programming. “And that competition points to the diversity of the other sections of the festival.” She went on to cite examples including Morgan Spurlock’s Spotlight section world-premiere Mansome , a documentary exploration of the rise of ‘man-scaping,’ and directing duo Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg’s Knuckleball! , another debut doc that deconstructs the erratic pitching style of the film’s title. Terranova then continued on to another festival section: “Tribeca’s Viewpoints includes films that push the boundaries of storytelling, including [world premiere] Resolution , which infuses genre elements. And the Cinemania section is a wild ride where most of our genre movies can be found, including Graceland from the Philippines to Jackpot from Norway.” What is a “Tribeca film”? Tribeca’s identity has dogged the festival almost since its start. Its earliest incarnation kept the bulk of the festival’s programs in the Tribeca neighborhood, and Hollywood fare didn’t figure as prominently as it will in 2012, when Five-Year Engagement and The Avengers open and close the festival, respectively. After the festival lost some key venues in the downtown area, it moved north to theaters in the East Village, Chelsea and beyond. (Like past openers, tonight’s premiere will take place at midtown Manhattan’s Ziegfeld Theater.) But organizers say Tribeca is less about where it is than what it says it hopes to reflect. “What is a Tribeca Film?” Gilmore asked rhetorically, perhaps hoping to head off a question some journalist inevitably brings up every year. “That is not an easy answer. We’re born of a diverse community, and we want to showcase quality and discovery for that audience, and we have no geographical limits.” “Not Pandering” to World Premiere Status… “We don’t have the same pressures to program only world premieres here,” said Tribeca’s new Artistic Director Frédéric Boyer, adding that programming an event where world debut status is obligatory usually spells doom in terms of quality for most festivals outside Cannes (where Boyer programmed Directors Fortnight) or Sundance. Still, the festival will be a launching pad for 54 titles this year — in addition to other North American and U.S. premieres. It’s the economy, stupid… Four years after the first wave of the financial crisis, Movieline asked if the after-effects of the meltdown were reflected in this year’s crop of films, since many have been conceivably in production in the last two or more years. “It’s not as popular a theme as you might think,” Gilmore said, though Terranova and Tribeca Film Festival executive director Nancy Schafer contended that the “great recession’s” aftermath can be found in a number of films in the festival. “[Competition drama] Nancy, Please is a product of economic anxiety that is born out of the crisis,” said Schafer, who added that the budgets of American filmmakers overall are significantly lower compared to pre-crisis levels. Looking forward, Tribeca’s programmers touted the festival’s evolution into the online space reflected in its ongoing Tribeca Online Film Festival component and are looking beyond, teasing a broader agenda to re-evaluate or even redefine what it is to be a film festival. “I think the Tribeca Film Festival has come into its own over the decade,” said Gilmore, who served 19 years as director of the Sundance Film Festival before joining Tribeca in 2009. “We are advancing strategies online, and we’re going to expand that going forward. We’re looking at how Tribeca can be on the cutting edge of how film festivals will be in the future. That’s our agenda right now.” Read all of Movieline’s Tribeca 2012 coverage here . Join the hip-hop trio Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com By Rob Markman Future, DJ Khaled and Juvenile Photo: Getty Images “RapFix Live” is ready to turn up. Last week, Sway welcomed Ace Hood and TDE’s Schoolboy Q on the red couch, but this week, he’ll have to make even more room because Future , DJ Khaled and Juvenile will all be stopping by to kick it Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. On Tuesday, Future is dropping his debut album, Pluto. To celebrate, he will swing through the “RapFix” set and make an appearance on MTV’s new weekly talk show “Hip Hop POV” on Wednesday. The “Tony Montana” rapper’s first shot features R. Kelly, T.I., Juicy J, Snoop Dogg and Trae Tha Truth. His single “Magic” peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hip-Hop/R&B charts, and his next record, “Same Damn Time,” is starting to bubble as well. It’ll be quite the moment if the rap newcomer crosses paths with veteran MC Juvenile , who will also be in the studio. Juvie began his career as the shining star on Birdman’s Cash Money Records. His 1998 LP, 400 Degreez, was a pivotal hip-hop album and ultimately established Cash Money as a musical force to be reckoned with. It spawned singles like “Ha” and the rump-shaking “Back That Azz Up.” Juvie left CMR in 2002 and has largely carried on by himself. He dropped his last solo album, Beast Mode, in 2010 and earlier this year released his Mardi Gras mixtape with DJ Smallz. Now you can’t have a party without DJ Khaled . Since 2006, the Miami representative has been carving his lane as a hitmaker. On his debut LP, Listennn… the Album, Khaled paired artists like Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Jadakiss and Beanie Sigel on high-powered collaborative cuts. He successfully improved on the formula through the years and has delivered with hit records like “I’m So Hood” featuring T-Pain, Rick Ross, Trick Daddy and Plies, as well as last year’s inescapable single “I’m On One” with Drake, Ross and Lil Wayne. Khaled’s latest track, “Take It to the Head,” partners Chris Brown, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj on a single track. His sixth studio album, Kiss the Ring, is due later this year. With ‘On the Road,’ ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ and ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2,’ it looks like 22 may be KStew’s biggest year yet. By Fallon Prinzivalli Kristen Stewart Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images That’s right, “Twilight” fans, the actress who plays one of our favorite heroines turned 22 on Monday (April 9)! The past year brought Kristen Stewart plenty to be proud of with the incredible success of “Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” and her upcoming year is looking to be even greater. This summer, Stewart takes on a different role from the accident-prone Bella Swan in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” where she will battle for her life as Snow White. With her shield and sword, Stewart teams up with the Huntsman ( Chris Hemsworth ) to rid their kingdom of the wicked Queen Ravenna ( Charlize Theron ). And while Theron’s and Stewart’s characters may not get along, Theron had nothing but “mad love” for the actress when wishing Stewart a happy birthday. Theron said, “Dude, happy frickin’ birthday. You’re awesome. I feel honored to know you. And just keep rocking, man. You’re amazing. Mad love.” The “Arrested Development” actress signed off by blowing Stewart a kiss. Hemsworth also had a birthday message for Stewart, saying, “Hey Kristen, happy bloody birthday! Have a great day. Lots of love.” Next up in the starlet’s grand 22nd year is “On the Road,” the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s highly praised novel. Stewart plays 16-year-old Marylou, the new wife of Dean Moriarty with an affinity for marijuana. The film will show yet another diverse side to Stewart’s acting abilities that will no doubt attract new fans who didn’t board the “Twilight” train. And for those of us who were not only aboard that train, but conducting it, in November we’ll see Stewart return as Bella Cullen in the “Twilight Saga” finale, “Breaking Dawn — Part 2.” We were already treated to a short, but very sweet, “Breaking Dawn” trailer sneak peek last month that has the fanbase already buzzing. And with all that KStew has planned this year, it sounds like that buzz is only going to get louder. What KStew movie are you most excited to see this year? Leave your comment below! Neil Patrick Harris has been tapped to host the Tony Awards for the third time, according to reports. The actor hosted the annual award show in 2009 and 2011. The 38-year-old How I Met Your Mother star, who will also be serving as a producer on this year’s telecast, confirmed the news in a statement. The 2012 Tony Awards air Sunday, June 10. “I’m thrilled to be a part of this year’s Tony Awards,” he said. “Not only will I be shining a spotlight on the best that Broadway has to offer, but hopefully I’ll score some free house seats to a show – or five!” Probably a fairly safe bet. “Neil is the ultimate showman,” adds CBS Entertainment’s Jack Sussman. “He brings great talent, energy and creativity to the Tony stage and usually a surprise or two. I can’t wait to see what he has in store this year.” [Photo: WENN.com]
It may be a few years before a new album emerges, but there will be new music from Adele in 2012. By Gil Kaufman Adele Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Could Adele be the next Bond girl? Not, like, in the movie, but on the soundtrack at least? The singer said in a recent interview that she will release a new single in 2012, which set off speculation that she might join the impressive likes of past Bond movie singers Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Shirley Bassey, Duran Duran, Madonna, Garbage and Jack White with Alicia keys as the sound of the upcoming 23rd 007 flick, “Skyfall.” Speaking to France’s NRJ radio, Adele said a “new song is coming out probably by the end of the year.” Though no news has been announced, British oddsmakers have been saying that Adele is the favorite to provide the all-important title tune to the next Bond adventure, which is due in theaters on November 9. In the meantime, the singer also revealed that she doesn’t expect to have a follow-up to her global smash 21 in stores for several years. “If I didn’t write my own songs, I’d be out next week with a new album,” she said. “I have to take time and live a little bit. There were a good two years between my first and second albums, so it’ll be the same this time.” With 21 still resting comfortably near the top of charts all around the world thanks to global sales in excess of 20 million, the singer said she’s not worried about capturing that same magic in a bottle the next time around. “I don’t think I’ll feel the pressure for the next album to be as big as the last one because I know that’s not really possible,” she said. “What’s happened with this album is very rare anyway.” Adele may have given a small preview of what the next album will sound like, though, when she revealed that her dream duet partner would be Beyonc
