‘Walking Dead’ Creator Bites Into Image Expo

MTV News speaks with Robert Kirkman about what fans of the undead can expect from Oakland, California, convention. By Josh Wigler Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh in “The Walking Dead” Photo: AMC If the worst should happen and a zombie apocalypse occurs this weekend, there’s no safer place in America to be than Northern California: “Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman will be in Oakland as part of the inaugural Image Expo , greatly increasing your survival odds if a pack of flesh-hungry walkers swarms the scene. “The Image Expo is an Image-centric comic book convention, so all of the guests have something to do with Image Comics,” Kirkman told MTV News during a recent phone interview. “All of the Image founders will be there, as well as new creators who are doing comics with Image this year: Ed Brubaker, Brian K. Vaughan, we have Jonathan Hickman coming here … all kinds of cool guests.” Running from February 24-26, the first-ever Image Expo makes its debut during the 20th anniversary of Image Comics. Kirkman, a longtime Image reader and current partner at the company, considers the anniversary a milestone achievement for a publisher that originally launched with a very uncertain future. “There were a lot of naysayers back in 1992 when the company was formed, saying they’d be gone within six months,” Kirkman said. “For Image to still be around, still generating new ideas and content and bringing in new creators into the industry, taking a lot of chances on people who’ve never been published before, that’s one of the things that Image does the best. It’s really cool that this vision of a company created by creators for creators, that offers the greatest creator-owned deal in the industry and gives everyone the kind of freedom every creator wants to have, is still standing.” Indeed, Image has plenty of new creators to brag about going into 2012. Kirkman identified “Captain America” writer Ed Brubaker’s new thriller “Fatale” as one of the books he’s most excited for this year. “Y: The Last Man” scribe Brian K. Vaughan’s upcoming sci-fi epic “Saga” is another of Kirkman’s must-read books in 2012. But Kirkman is equally excited about the arrival of some new creative voices at Image this year, including the company’s onetime PR and marketing coordinator Joe Keatinge, who launches a new series titled “Hell Yeah” in early March. “There are a lot of things he’s involved in that I’m very excited about, but the fact that he’s launching a creator-owned book, ‘Hell Yeah,’ is really great,” Kirkman said about Keatinge’s upcoming projects. “Image is the place that brings in new talent and shepherds them into the comics industry, and I see big things from this Keatinge kid.” Of course, Kirkman has plenty of his own books he’s bringing to the table as well. During Image Expo, Kirkman will champion some of his fan-favorite titles including “Walking Dead” and “Invincible,” as well as his new comic “Thief of Thieves” that debuted from his Skybound imprint earlier this year. “It’s about a guy named Conrad Paulson who lives a double life as an international thief named Redmond, who is rumored to be the greatest thief who ever lived,” Kirkman said of the book’s premise. “But he has a problem: he chose his thief life over his personal life, and he has an estranged ex-wife and a son he’s never talked to. He has a ton of regrets. The book is about him trying to get his life in order and turned around, turning his back on his career as a thief… but finding that he is completely and utterly unable to do that. He’s completely addicted to the thrill of stealing objects. He tries to work around that by working out a way to steal for the greater good.” Taking a page from his “Walking Dead” television experience, Kirkman is implementing a writer’s-room approach to “Thief of Thieves.” Rather than writing the book all on his own, he’s working alongside an unknown number of other writers — including “Morning Glories” scribe Nick Spencer — to add even more voices to his latest creative endeavor. “It’s been a lot of fun working on ‘The Walking Dead’ in the writer’s room. I’ve grown to respect that method of crafting stories, so I figured I’d give it a shot on a comic book,” Kirkman said. “It’s cool to sit down with other writers — currently unnamed, but we’ll be making announcements soon — and plotting out the story in the same way we’d be doing it on a television show. Having those different brains in the mix, people with different backgrounds generating different ideas and adding to the stew of the story we’re putting together is very cool. When you sit down and read the first 25 issues of ‘Thief of Thieves,’ you’re going to see all these different ideas at work. It’ll be cool to see how it all comes together.” Kirkman fans traveling to Image Expo to take a bite out of the writer’s biggest hit to date, “Walking Dead,” won’t walk away disappointed either. The convention will host variant editions of “Walking Dead” #94, as well as a select number of limited-edition “Walking Dead” watches . And, of course, there’s that little AMC series to consider as well. “We’ve got a panel called ‘Walking Dead’ Live where [‘Talking Dead’ host] Chris Hardwick will be interviewing myself and [actors Norman Reedus and Steven Yeun] together on a panel,” Kirkman said. “We’ll get to do that live before a panel audience, which should be pretty exciting. We’ll also have autographs, signings, all that cool stuff. We might even play ping pong with people. I cannot confirm that, but we’ll see. We’re going to be having all kinds of fun!” Are you heading to Image Expo this weekend? Sound off in the comments section or hit me up on Twitter @roundhoward ! Oscars 2012 Predictions: Best Supporting Actor

Christopher Plummer is a shoo-in for his affecting turn in ‘Beginners.’ By Eric Ditzian Christopher Plummer in “The Beginners” Photo: Focus Features Let’s begin this discussion of the 2012 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor by pouring one out for “Drive” co-star Albert Brooks, who seemed to have a nod all locked up until he didn’t, leaving movie fans around the country to scratch our heads and wonder, Whappened? While we’re at it, big shout-out to Patton Oswalt, whose scenes in “Young Adult” were not only the most consistently entertaining but whose post-Oscar snub tweets proved the comedian is hilarious even in defeat. And Uggie — the only thing I truly loved about “The Artist” — was either ineligible due to his being a Jack Russell terrier or else cruelly discriminated against. Either way, he didn’t nab a nom. But we’re supposed to be past the point of whining about snubs, aren’t we? We’re supposed to be focused on celebrating the efforts of five fine supporting actors in five fine films, are we not? The thing is, this category is truly hard to get excited about. We’re not going to go so far as to call the nominees boring as a whole, but we will point out a) approximately 11 people saw “Beginners” in a theater; b) “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” is a wretched bit of magical realism lazily draped onto a very raw episode in American history; and c) it would have been way cooler had Kenneth Branagh been honored for helming “Thor” than for anything that occurred in “My Week With Marilyn.” And it is with this high praise and these high hopes that we edge toward the Best Supporting Actor category at this year’s Oscar. Here are our picks. Who Will Win : OK, OK, this is an easy category to mock, especially since the median age of its nominees is 106. But we must say this: “Beginners,” despite no one actually having seen it, is a beautiful movie. It is sweet and moving and complexly told not for complexity’s sake but because life itself is so damn complicated. Christopher Plummer’s turn as an elderly man who finally comes out of the closet following the death of his wife (only to die himself shortly thereafter) is an affecting one. If I don’t exactly see why this supporting performance is being held up as the finest of the year, if I can point to past Plummer roles more deserving of Oscar love (his recent portrayal of Tolstoy in “The Last Station,” for instance), I certainly can’t begrudge the 82-year-old his win. There’s no doubt that after a lifetime of service in Hollywood, he deserves it. Who Should Win : Not Branagh and not “Moneyball” star Jonah Hill. I remain ambivalent about their movies. And certainly not Max von Sydow, who could have delivered the greatest performance in the history of performances and still not rescued the superlatively grating “Extremely Loud.” Then there’s Nick Nolte, whose last Oscar nod came in 1998. He’s never won, and “Warrior” kicked a whole lot of ass. Who are we kidding, though? Given this collection of nominees, the only just choice is the man who’s a lock to actually win Best Supporting Actor: Mr. Christopher Plummer. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! George Clooney’s Road To The 2012 Oscars

‘The Descendants’ and ‘The Ides of March’ earn the Academy Award-winner his sixth and seventh nominations. By Kevin P. Sullivan George Clooney in “The Descendants” Photo: Fox Searchlight At this point in his career, almost 30 years after he started acting, George Clooney has become not only one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, but a regular competitor at each year’s Oscars . This year’s Academy Awards nominations, his sixth and seventh, for “The Descendants” and “The Ides of March” represent the diverse work Clooney is now known for and the many different roles he takes on. Clooney’s journey to Sunday night’s 2012 Oscars took a familiar path through the festival circuit with releases in the second half of the year, one carefully engineered to spell awards success, but the two films that got him there and the work he did cover a wide spectrum in filmmaking. “Ides of March” took shape late in 2010, when Clooney signed on to wear three hats for the film: actor, producer and director. His fourth directorial effort to date, the political drama follows a young junior campaign manager (Ryan Gosling) as he struggles with the moral dilemmas of supporting a presidential candidate, played by Clooney. Based on Beau Willimon’s play “Farragut North,” the script for “Ides of March” earned Best Adapted Screenplay nominations for the original author, Clooney and his frequent collaborator Grant Heslov. Though Clooney’s well-known political affiliations and beliefs stood in the foreground, the man himself took more of a backseat, limiting his onscreen role to a few keys scenes. During awards season, the film made a small mark, after debuting to only mildly positive reviews. It did, however, take a spot on the National Board of Review’s top 10 of the year and earned four Golden Globes nominations, including Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director. In “The Descendants,” Clooney took a familiar spot as leading man, but the role of Matt King required him to be anything but his usual model of suave confidence. As a soon-to-be widow, Clooney fully adopted the dopey mantel of an Alexander Payne hero in the tradition of Paul Giamatti in “Sideways” and Matthew Broderick in “Election.” But unlike his predecessors as a lead in one of Payne’s films, Clooney’s character remained almost entirely sympathetic throughout the film, thanks in large part to the believability of the acting. He effortlessly took on the role of an utterly clueless father with good intentions, helping make “Descendants” such a true and touching film. In the week leading up to Oscar night, Clooney stands neck and neck with fellow nominee Jean Dujardin as the favorite. It would be Clooney’s second win for acting, his first coming in 2006 as supporting actor in Stephen Gaghan’s “Syriana.” However Sunday’s ceremony might shake out for Clooney, he has proven himself a mainstay for the Academy Awards, and — whether he’s acting, directing, writing or producing — someone who will continue to appear on shortlists for years to come. ‘Safe House’ Rules Holiday Weekend Box Office

Denzel Washington’s latest ekes out a win over ‘Ghost Rider’ sequel and ‘The Vow.’ By Ryan J. Downey Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in “Safe House” Photo: Universal Pictures Denzel Washington topped the box office over the holiday weekend as a comic book sequel flamed out. Two holdovers from last week, “Safe House” and “The Vow,” were neck and neck for the top spot during the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend and helped push box-office receipts to 11 percent over the same period last year. Washington’s “Safe House” was #1, with a four-day total of $28.4 million. “The Vow” followed just behind with $26.6 million, according to studio estimates. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” was #3 with $26.4 million thanks to a very strong Monday. “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” opened at #4 with $25.7 million, followed by the debut of the Reese Witherspoon-starring “This Means War” at #5 with $20.4 million. “Safe House” has made $82.6 million thus far, making it the second-best 10-day run for Washington, just behind “American Gangster.” The drama looks likely to pass the $100 million mark, which will make it the fourth movie in the 57-year-old actor’s career to do so. “The Vow” has earned $88.5 million thus far, which means it is now the highest-grossing movie ever for the Sony/ Screen Gems brand. The second “Ghost Rider” film, based on the Marvel Comics antihero, opened with less than half of the 2007 original’s $45.4 million debut. Nicolas Cage reprises the role of Johnny Blaze in “Spirit of Vengeance,” which, despite featuring a darker take on the supernatural motorcycle rider (courtesy of the directing duo behind “Crank”), suffered even worse reviews than its predecessor. At press time, “Ghost Rider” sat at 27 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer , which averages reviews from critics, while the sequel sat at 15 percent. The weekend’s other new wide release, “The Secret World of Arrietty,” was #9 on the box-office chart with $8.1 million. The debut for the animated film, which features English-speaking actors recording new performances in the Japanese film, met with Disney’s reported expectations. Similarly, the romance-meets-action of “This Means War” wasn’t far off from the debuts of similar fare like “Knight & Day,” “The Tourist” or “Killers,” all of which had mostly negative reviews and opened between $15 and $20 million. “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menance” in 3-D suffered a bigger second-week decline than the similar 3-D re-release of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” but still added enough to the prequel’s all-time box-office total to push it past the original “Star Wars” to become the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time. “Phantom Menace” made $10.2 million over the four-day weekend for a domestic theater total of $36 million for the 3-D version. Two smaller but critically acclaimed pictures continued to benefit from awards season momentum over the weekend. The latest picture from Alexander Payne (“Sideways”), “The Descendants,” starring George Clooney, passed the $75 million mark, while silent film “The Artist” passed $25 million. Both movies are up for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards , among other nominations. ‘Glee’ Cast Won’t Tour This Summer

Cast may instead put on a charity concert later this year to support its Give a Note campaign. By Jocelyn Vena Darren Criss in “Glee” Photo: FOX After two successful runs in the past, “Glee” won’t hit the road this summer. Despite earlier reports that the show would kick off another tour this year, a rep tells The Hollywood Reporter , “We currently have no plans of touring the cast this summer.” However, there are plans to hold a charity concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles later this year. Proceeds from the show would benefit the “Glee” Give a Note campaign, which supports music education programs in schools. Sources told Billboard.com that dates have already been discussed, but the show or shows are only in the planning stages. September seems to be the target date for the charity concert. Although a concert tour had been discussed, the focus now seems to be on the charity gig. “We have been talking about continuing our work on a next phase of ‘Glee’ Give a Note,” said Jane Balek, Give a Note’s COO and assistant executive director of the National Association for Music Education. “But no definite projects were discussed.” She added that “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy and Fox are “truly supportive of the mission of NAfME and its Give a Note Foundation.” Last year’s tour was later made into a 3-D film , “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” The film opened last August, and despite the show’s TV success, it failed to ignite the box office, profiting only $5.7 million in its opening weekend and landing at #11 that week. Drake Kills The Game To Take #2 In Hottest MCs Debate

YMCMB standout was ‘On One’ this year, from undeniable features to Take Care. By MTV News staff Drake Photo: Getty Images Drake says his only cares are money and his native Toronto, but judging from the way he showed out in 2011, you have to figure rap dominance was pretty high on his list too. Drizzy definitely got his money and went to great lengths to put the city where he’s from on the map. Those efforts helped Drake clinch the #2 slot on MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. “A lot of times artists are faced with a sophomore slump. I think Drake surpassed it and probably had one of the best hip-hop albums of the year,” said Steven Roberts, MTV News producer/writer, about the chart-topping Take Care. Although Drake didn’t drop the November 2011 project until the fourth quarter, he maintained a serious presence all year: whether through personally leaked tracks like “Dreams Money Can Buy” and “Trust Issues” or high-powered collaborations like Future’s “Tony Montana,” Lil Wayne’s “She Will” and DJ Khaled’s inescapable summer smash “I’m On One,” which spent 13 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Rap Songs charts. Want to join the debate? Just hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! “Try to imagine what radio would sound like this past year if you removed Drake from the equation,” said Rebecca Thomas, MTV News editor/writer, issuing a challenge. And if his and Ross’ Y.O.L.O. ever sees the light of day, expect another year of dominance from Aubrey. Rahman Dukes, MTV News’ director of hip-hop news, answered the call: “You wouldn’t even know that he didn’t have an album out [early last year] because he was all over the radio.” Drake’s dominance is well-documented, from SoundScan success to extraordinarily extensive radio play. As an artist, the Young Money standout blends R&B melody and alternative sensibilities with an MC’s bravado. While still spitting bars with some of the game’s most highly regarded lyricists, his emotive writing style made it acceptable for rappers to dish out their feelings (though Common might disagree ). Still, while the Toronto rapper meets all of the criteria to be considered hot, some members of the Hip-Hop Brain Trust wondered whether his penchant for singing was a strike against him in competition with purebred MCs? After all, Take Care was equal parts rap and R&B. “In this debate, he loses points for that,” said Rob Markman, MTV News’ senior hip-hop writer, of Drake’s crooning. It’s doubtful Drake will change, though, nor do fans want him to — his musical duality has been a major selling point. It not only led to his deal with Lil Wayne’s Young Money, it helped launch him to international stardom. Now the whole world knows his name. Shelia Grullon, music programming coordinator at MTV, put it simply: “I think before he was kinda off of Wayne’s heels and now he just held his own.” What do you think of our list?
