Having already won a Golden Globe for her turn as sassy maid Minny Jackson in “The Help” on top of numerous other nominations, Spencer can add another notch to her increasingly impressive belt Tuesday (January 24) — because, to the surprise of precisely no one, the 41-year-old actress has earned a well-deserved Best Supporting Actress nod at this year’s Academy Awards . “I am never presumptuous, because these sorts of things are beyond our control and I didn’t want to be set up for disappointment,” Spencer said in a statement reacting to the nomination. “A lot of us actually went to dinner last night and slept over and wanted to be together when we found out, so in case we didn’t get that call we wanted to be nice and hungover.” Earlier in the week, MTV News caught up with Spencer at the Sundance Film Festival , which she attended as part of the cast of the alcohol drama “Smashed.” When asked for her views on her probable nomination, the always humble actress revealed that she wasn’t even giving the possibility any thought. “I’ve been very good about not thinking about Oscar,” she told MTV’s Josh Horowitz. “I know I’m going to the BAFTAs, and I know I’m going to the SAGs. It would be nice to go to the Oscars. “That little movie was about something that resonated with people, and it became a phenomenon,” she said of her experience with “The Help,” adding that she hopes moviegoers will embrace her new movie “Smashed” with an equal amount of passion. “Hopefully I’ll continue to get more roles like this, in extremely wonderful and very relevant films. … It feels like I’m eating a bunch of cake right now!” The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Every so often festivals feature films that so offend the sensibilities of audience members that post-screening Q&As take an ugly turn, with upset viewers voicing their beefs, and loudly, straight to the filmmakers in attendance. This year that provocation came in the form of Craig Zobel’s Compliance , a drama based on an outrageous real-life crime that drew immediate backlash from some in attendance. Is being this year’s The Killer Inside Me / The Woman a buzz-building coup for the film? According to multiple media reports, the animosity emerged fairly quickly following the screening of Compliance , which follows the employees of a fast food chain as a caller claiming to be a police officer remotely instructs the investigation of a teenage clerk, leading her manager to detain her, humiliate her, and worse. The lengths to which Zobel’s film go to depict these events, based on an actual crime, prompted some moviegoers to cry foul. “Sundance, you can do better!” one woman reportedly shouted. According to The Hollywood Reporter , the comments went from admonishing to uncomfortable for star Dreama Walker. When Walker attempted to talk about her role and performance, which required her to be at least partially nude for a large portion of the film, a man in the audience yelled: “Your body is pretty appealing,” leaving Walker visibly shaken as a few other audiences members joined in with catcalls directed toward the cast and director. And then: “The Compliance Q&A has people yelling across the room,” Tweeted Twitch Film’s Ryland Aldrich. “Claims of misogny. ‘I’m a f*ggot! I don’t get off on her body!'” The brouhaha is reminiscent of the public receptions in recent years to Lucky McKee’s The Woman , which was accused of misogyny during its Sundance premiere Q&A, and Michael Winterbottom’s The Killer Inside Me , which provoked numerous complaints for its brutal violence, including a scene in which Jessica Alba is viciously attacked. Those festival controversies earned attention and piqued curiosities, making those films instantly more interesting must-sees in the days that followed, and arguably floated some additional interest when both hit theatrical release. The same is already happening for Compliance , whose publicity reps sent out media alerts today calling it “the provocative movie festival-goers are buzzing about.” Which is fine, but Zobel, for his part, must have known his film would test boundaries from the start given the material. It remains to be seen if further screenings of Compliance this week prompt more outbursts, not to mention whether or not the “provocative” reputation can propel it further towards eventual post-festival success without overshadowing its actual content. Last year in Park City, we were fairly sure that we got Emma to drop a massive “Scream 4” spoiler — namely that she wasn’t going to survive her encounter with Ghost Face — and we were right … partially. At this year’s Sundance, our conversation with Emma was not so grim. The up-and-coming actress has a starring role in “Celeste and Jesse Forever,” a comedy about a divorcing couple struggling to maintain their friendship during an intense period of transition. In the film, which also stars co-writer Rashida Jones , Roberts goes against type as a pop star named Riley, who is an amalgamation of various musical icons. But according to the actress, there’s one particular singer she took her cues from. “I got to bring together every pop star and fold it into one person,” she told MTV News about her role in the film. “[But] my hair is definitely Ke$ha . I have these fabulous long, blond, slightly ratty extensions. I miss those dearly.” Of course, hair alone does not make a pop star. Roberts had to sing and dance to get into the role, rocking out with a dance anthem that was co-written by Jones herself. “We recorded a song that Rashida co-wrote with a bunch of people, and it’s just wildly entertaining and inappropriate and it’s kind of a dance anthem. It was fun,” she said. “You know when you listen to songs and they yell at you to have fun? That’s kind of what we decided to do, because I love being yelled at to have fun and dance!” Who doesn’t? If you’re a football fan, avid or casual, then you’ve heard the rumblings. You’ve noticed how undoubtedly similar this New York Giants team is to the 2007 squad, a team that got on a hot streak late and went all the way to the Super Bowl and ended what would have been a historic season for the once 18-0 Patriots. Don’t get it twisted though; this is not the same exact team, they’re BETTER and for a couple of reasons. Who do you pick to make the Super Bowl? Play our NFL Bracket game & enter for a chance to win Madden 12! A major contrast this team has with its 07’ counterpart is its absence of two former difference makers on both sides of the ball. On defense it was the well known sack king- Michael Strahan . Strahan holds the single season record for sacks and will most likely pass rush his way right into the hall of fame when he becomes eligible. On the other side of the ball it was Plaxico Burress. Yes the man who many non football fans would know for channeling his inner Cheddar Bob and shooting himself in the leg in a nightclub after the 2007 season. That incident (unfortunately) overshadowed his game clinching touchdown catch in the super bowl just days before. Although, these guys are gone and were great in their Giant careers, they’ve been replaced with some youthful playmakers that any of the other 31 teams would love to have. The Giants (still) have a ferocious pass rush, who don’t fall too far from their super bowl tree ranked third this year with 48 sacks as opposed to the 50 they tallied in 07. Instead of Strahan this group is led by the second year phenom Jason Pierre Paul , who had a whopping 16.5 sacks this year. Veteran’s Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, two holdovers from the Super Bowl team, are still there and balling. They also replaced Plaxico and that group of receivers with some young blood. The giants trio of Manningham, Cruz, and Nicks, who in particular is setting postseason receiving records, are playing at Pro Bowl levels right now. The biggest reason why the Giants will win the Superbowl is Eli Manning . Yes the same Eli manning that threw a league high 25 interceptions one year ago and would often times have you scratching your head thinking “this guy is Peyton’s brother?!” Well this has been a career defining year for Eli as he ranked 7 th in passer rating, set a career high in yards and completions, while keeping his interceptions to a modest 16. The Same Eli who in the beginning of the season was mocked and ridiculed for saying he was an Elite quarterback. After winning his second playoff game in Lambeau field, one of the most difficult places to play, no one has a right to argue with him. He turned out a sensational performance and is the number one reason this team has had success this season. So with only 2 victories keeping him from his second Superbowl, the next time Eli says he’s elite, not a single person should laugh or chuckle, in fact he doesn’t even have to, his play says it all.
