Can ‘American Idol’ Soar Again? Experts Weigh In

In season 11, show faces increased competition from ‘The Voice.’ By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson on “American Idol” Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Back in the day when “American Idol” was the lumbering 800-pound gorilla of the reality-singing-competition world, it was hard to imagine a time when the top-rated show on TV could ever be toppled. But like any smashingly popular series that eventually loses some of its luster (see “Lost,” “Deal or No Deal” and “Two and a Half Men”), this year, “Idol” is facing a turning point of sorts. Still a ratings juggernaut, season 11 of the show will launch Wednesday night in an atmosphere ripe with other singing shows that could start nipping at its heels. “For nine years, ‘Idol’ had the entire airwaves to itself with lesser rivals like ‘Nashville Star’ … [but now] the world feels much more cluttered with singing shows,” said veteran entertainment journalist Richard Rushfield, author of “American Idol: The Untold Story.” Among the shows Rushfield pointed to are former “Idol” judge Simon Cowell’s recently concluded “X Factor,” NBC’s “The Voice” (which launched in late April last year but will debut after the Super Bowl on February 5) and NBC’s Broadway musical drama “Smash,” which stars “Idol” alum Katharine McPhee and Debra Messing (February 6). Even with all those shows competing for eyeballs and threatening to create singing fatigue, Rushfield still feels “Idol” has a good chance of continuing its ratings dominance. “This year, after ‘The Voice’ and ‘X Factor,’ I think it’s really clear what slice of the pie ‘Idol’ has and that they’re all very different shows going after very different audiences,” he said. “‘Factor was making a very deliberate attempt to position itself as young and contemporary for an audience more open to an edgier, harsher show, and ‘Idol’ has doubled down on being the middle-American, older, feel-good, soft, nonthreatening show.” While ratings did continue their slow decline last year, “Idol” remained the overall champ, even as some critics complained about the sometimes too-sunny face put on by new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. As “Idol” prepares to bombard viewers with eight audition episodes featuring the predictable mix of potential stars and wackadoodle nobodies over the next month, Village Voice music editor Maura Johnston suggested perhaps it’s time the show’s runners take a look around and tweak the formula. “One thing the success of ‘The Voice’ speaks to is that people want the action to start earlier,” she said of the two-and-out round of blind auditions held by the competing show last season. “The audition episodes on ‘Idol’ get ratings … but at the same time, it’s grueling. ‘The Voice’ was so exciting because they put the competition and head-to-head stuff in so early.” Ratings history has shown that as programs like “Idol” continue on into their double-digit years, their audience invariably get older. The show has also failed to launch another superstar on the rank of winners Kelly Clarkson or season four’s Carrie Underwood, with last year’s winner, country teen Scotty McCreery, becoming the first platinum-selling champ since season seven’s David Cook. With “The Voice” and “X Factor” both putting a more musically and racially eclectic roster of winners and top finishers in the mix, is this the year the “four cute white guys in a row” factor might catch up with “Idol”? Johnston doesn’t think so. “One thing ‘Idol’ is speaking to over the past couple of years is the hunger among a certain demo for male pop singers who aren’t operating in a hip-hop idiom, but in a more guitar-centric way,” she said. There was a fear that with main meanie Cowell gone, viewers might turn their backs en masse at the sunshiny vibe of Tyler and Lopez, but Rushfield said that “Idol” could end up like such perennial ratings-getters as the World Series, sticking around year-after-year through ratings booms and busts. “It could lose two-thirds of its audience and still be a strong hit show by contemporary standards,” he said. “They found their most successful singer in half a decade, so you can’t look at it as on the course of decline. [With Tyler and Lopez] it also has new life, but the only question is … is there just singing-competition fatigue?” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘Bridesmaids’ Director ‘Pulling For’ Melissa McCarthy Oscar

‘I think we got a good shot with Melissa [for Best Supporting Actress],’ Paul Feig tells us on the Golden Globes red carpet. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Joshua Horowitz Paul Feig Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images “Bridesmaids” might have walked away from the Golden Globes empty-handed , but the raunchy comedy is still considered a dark horse for the upcoming Oscar race. Nominees won’t be announced until January 24, and many experts are guessing that the film might sneak into the pool of Best Picture nominees. Director Paul Feig is similarly optimistic. MTV News caught up with him on the red carpet before the Globes where he chatted about his predictions for “Bridesmaids'” Oscar chances. “I’m really pulling for Melissa [McCarthy]. I think we got a good shot with Melissa [for Best Supporting Actress],” he said. “I think the girls have a good shot for the screenplay.” But what about their Best Picture odds? Feig isn’t holding his breath. “Look, nothing would make me happier,” he said. “I think that’s a real tough one because the way the voting for the Academy is set up for Best Pictures this year is tough. We have to get a lot of, like, ‘best movie of the year’ votes, which, like, we’re good, but we’re not the best movie of the year. I’d like to say we were, but what an ass I would sound like if I did say that.” That lends itself to a different argument that says the Academy Awards should follow the Globes’ model and separate the drama and comedy categories. As a comedic director and producer for over a decade, Feig said he sees the upside in that split. His argument is that it’s easier to create a showy drama that appeals to critics than a showy comedy that does the same. In his experience, showy comedies typically distance the intended audience, though that isn’t always the case. “I thought ‘The Hangover’ was very showy in that way, filmmaking-wise. But it’s hard because most comedy needs to be very relatable. Like, if I were to do ‘Bridesmaids’ kind of very stylistic, I think I would alienate the audience, you know,” he said. “As a filmmaker, my theory is always, ‘Take the backseat. Don’t show off. Let the girls be the focus.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Bridesmaids.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Golden Globes 2012 Predictions: Best Actress

Viola Davis and Michelle Williams, but who should win? MTV News breaks it down. By Kevin P. Sullivan Viola Davis in “The Help” Photo: Dreamworks After holding our breath for almost a month, on Sunday, we will find out who will be taking home this year’s Golden Globes . The competition has shifted significantly since the nominees were first announced in December, so we’re going to take a look at where the hopefuls stand and who has the best shot at winning gold. Here are our thoughts on the categories of Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical: Best Actress – Drama This Globes category contains the two nominees most people consider the lead contenders for Best Actress on Oscar night. Expect people to be paying close attention to this category in particular, since there hasn’t been a runaway favorite throughout awards season. This award could change all of that. Who Will Win : Viola Davis for “The Help.” With her win at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards , Davis confirmed theories that she was the favorite in this category. Her powerful performance played well with audiences across the board in a movie generally more liked than those of other nominees. Who Should Win : Viola Davis for “The Help.” Sorry, Ms. Streep, this is simply Davis’ year. Hers was an emotionally powerful performance and the one that left audiences weeping. She’s the favorite for a reason. Best Actress – Comedy or Musical With the exception of Michelle Williams, the actresses in this category turned in great performances but have lacked the buzz to make them serious Oscar contenders. Unfortunately, this category will be one of the few chances to honor some of the year’s best unsung performances. Who Will Win : Michelle Williams for “My Week With Marilyn.” It’s the dramatic role in the comedy category. That’s not the only difference here; Williams’ portrayal of the blond bombshell has been mentioned in nearly every other actress’ honor, unlike many of her fellow nominees. It’s an iconic performance that might skate by on an odd categorization. Who Should Win : Charlize Theron for “Young Adult.” It took balls to bring life to the wholly unlikable Mavis Gary, and it’s exactly the kind of unsympathetic portrayal that is rarely seen these days. Theron pushed away convention and expectation and turned in one of the most memorable performances in a stellar career. Stick with MTV News on Sunday night for the 2012 Golden Globes winners, and don’t miss all the fashion from the Golden Globes red carpet ! Teresa Palmer Is One To Watch In 2012

We’re keeping an eye on Teresa’s three upcoming projects: ‘Wish You Were Here,’ ‘AWOL’ and ‘Warm Bodies.’ By Kara Warner Teresa Palmer in “Wish You Were Here” Photo: Hopscotch Films Amazingly enough, our week of Ones to Watch in 2012 profiles is coming to an end. Over the past few days, we’ve highlighted a few of the stars who we feel will make the biggest impact in Hollywood this year. They are the rising stars of action, drama and blockbusters, who have the potential to be future award winners. The latest One to Watch is Aussie-born beauty Teresa Palmer, who fits into all of those categories and has not one, but three movies in which audiences can see her this year: the Australian indie and official Sundance Film Festival selection “Wish You Were Here” opposite Joel Edgerton, ’60s-set war drama “AWOL” with fellow Aussie and One to Watch Liam Hemsworth and “Warm Bodies,” a zombie romance based on Isaac Marion’s acclaimed novel. MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with Palmer recently to talk about her expectations for the year and what she loves most about her upcoming films, as well as the status on Six and that “I Am Number Four” sequel. MTV News : With the new year just getting started, do you have any specific goals or expectations for yourself? Teresa Palmer : Every year, I write a very elaborate journal, which I find to be very therapeutic and such a nice tool to have. This year, my New Year’s resolutions and goals, I had eight pages worth of stuff. Mainly it was goals that I’ve set for myself, and I know it’s going to be a busy year. I’m sure it’s going to be full of peaks and valleys, but I tend to do that every year and stick to what those goals are. MTV : We’ve seen you in plenty of films before this year, but how is 2012 different from other years? Palmer : This is the first time I’ve had three films come out in a year. I’m really excited because I’ve balanced between doing a big studio film, which I’ve been doing a lot in the last few years, with a cool independent. I have a cool independent film coming out called “Wish You Were Here” with Joel Edgerton and it’s Australian, which is super exciting for me because I haven’t been back to Australia to work in a few years. And then of course I have “Warm Bodies” coming out in August and then I have a period piece which is a much smaller movie again, set in the 1960s around the Vietnam war, called “AWOL,” and that’s with Liam Hemsworth. They’re just very different characters. I couldn’t really draw any similarities between the three girls that I play, and that’s certainly a draw card for me when I select the project. It’s just exciting, the diversity in the roles this year. It’s great. MTV : We’ve been following “Warm Bodies” for a while now. It’s a very different film from what people think. How do you describe it? Palmer : “Warm Bodies” is a truly unique zombie film. Yes, it has those elements of a zombie movie, and for those who embrace that genre, they’re not going to be disappointed because we have a lot of those typical action sequences in zombie films, but really, at the heart of the story is this relationship between R and Julie, and it’s unlike anything I think you’ve seen on film before. It’s so sweet, and there’s a lot humor. It really is, believe it or not, grounded in a reality. I think people can absolutely relate to R, who plays our lovable zombie. He’s an outsider, and it’s very much an “Edward Scissorhands”-type story and it’s really beautiful how this romance blossoms. It was such a strong script and truly very special, and that’s what drew me to the project in the first place. It’s just exceeded my expectations throughout filming, and the little of what I’ve seen I’m really excited about, I think more so than any other film I’ve been in, which is a great step for me. And I get to see a lot more when we start doing in a few weeks. MTV : How would you describe the look of the film? Palmer : It’s a dark, bleak world. There are 400 humans left in society, so it’s very much that postapocalyptic world. Empty streets, a huge deserted airport, which always makes for an interesting backdrop. There’s a lot of beauty, though, and it surrounds. I think another character in the film really is the music; it’s celebrated in our movie. It’s just a very eclectic film in the way that we have eccentric pieces and really interesting graffiti that maybe not everyone will notice, but so much effort was put into the look of the film, the backdrops and sets and just the feel of it, that I think it’s going to be really interesting on film. We have the production designer who did “Super 8,” among a bunch of other films, and it is really epic. MTV : Is there room for a sequel, or do you feel it’s a standalone film? Palmer : I would love, love to go back and play Julie. I certainly already miss R, and I said to [director] Jonathan Levine just recently “I miss them both so much.” I miss R’s sweetness and how beautiful he is to Julie and how much he takes care of her. He’s struggling so much with being bottled up in a zombie, he doesn’t like his existence in that way, and we sort of help each other to grow. I love that. I would be so excited to do another film. At the moment, it lends itself to the one film, but we all sat around drawing up possible ideas in the air, and Isaac Marion was on set with us, and he said he has a couple of ideas. If anything, there might be a prequel, but right now, it’s a standalone film. I guess it just depends. MTV : Have you had any more discussion on the character of Six and a sequel to “I Am Number Four”? Palmer : I have been poking around asking about that a little bit. I think of all the films I’ve done so far, that’s the character who is most celebrated to me. I meet people who come up to me on the street and say all my lines from “I Am Number Four” and they really loved Six, which is exciting. I’ve been asked that question a lot recently; I really don’t know. I think at the moment, there are no plans to make a sequel, which is a bummer, but you never know. It really depends on how all those sales go, the DVDs and those numbers. It’s a money game, I guess, so we will see, but I would love to play her again. What are you waiting for? Taylor Schilling Talks Working With Zac Efron, Ben Affleck

Star-making turns in ‘The Lucky One’ and ‘Argo’ make actress One to Watch in 2012. By Amy Wilkinson Taylor Schilling and Zac Efron in “The Lucky One” Photo: Warner Bros. Ryan Gosling. Rachel McAdams. Liam Hemsworth. To think, you may have never known their names if it weren’t for one of the weepy romances by Nicholas Sparks, the writer behind “The Notebook,” “The Last Song,” “Dear John” and more. And as we ring in a new year of cinema, we find yet another actress toying with the lever on Sparks’ star-making machine: Massachusetts native Taylor Schilling. Fans of NBC’s short-lived medical drama “Mercy” may recognize the 27-year-old as nurse Veronica Flanagan Callahan, though she’s since hung up her scrubs, making the transition from TV to film in earnest this year with roles in the Sparks adaptation “The Lucky One” and Ben Affleck’s “Argo.” We chatted with the actress about her breakout 2012 and whether making out underwater is as hard as it looks. MTV News : Does this year feel like a particularly big one for you? Taylor Schilling : Last year felt like a big year. This year feels just kind of like riding the wave. I did some fun work last year, so I’m excited to see how it shakes down. MTV : Has transitioning from TV to film been an intentional career move for you, or were those simply the roles that were coming your way? Schilling : When I audition, I take the parts that I get that I like. I feel so grateful that those have been these kind of amazing film roles. And I have to say that there is a big difference [between TV and film]. On a film set, for me, there’s so much more time to process what’s going on than there is on a television set. There’s more wiggle room to try things and fail and try again and get to the heart of what’s going on in the scene, which is really fun for me. It’s what I like to do. MTV : First up for you this year is “The Lucky One,” co-starring Zac Efron. Let’s cut to the obvious question: Is kissing Zac as amazing as one might imagine? Schilling : Oh my gosh. I’m not going to let you down. It’s not a bad way to make a paycheck. MTV : My favorite Nicholas Sparks movie motif is the rain-drenched makeout scene. From the trailer, it appears you and Zac share a steamy smooch under a showerhead, which is a bit of a twist. What I’m wondering, technically speaking, is if there’s any special choreography to ensure you don’t drown with all that water falling on you? Schilling : [Laughs] No, there didn’t seem to be a problem. MTV : Well, you’re clearly a talented, well-trained actress. Do you have a favorite Nicholas Sparks movie? Schilling : I love “The Notebook.” I think that’s my favorite one. It really is a classic now. I don’t know if I could say. I haven’t seen all of them yet, to be honest. I think I need to do some research before I can honestly answer that question. They’re just such nice stories. They’re so romantic. You get lost in them. It’s such a beautiful fantasy. It’s not real life. It’s this precious world where things kind of fall into place. MTV : You also have “Argo” coming out this year. What is Ben Affleck like as a director? Schilling : It was one of the easiest experiences I’ve ever had on a set, and it was one of the happiest sets I’ve ever been on. He’s incredibly smart, and he kind of made me as an actor — I never felt left behind. It’s like he knows what it’s like and he’s there with you every step of the way. It’s pretty incredible, that whole experience. MTV : I have to imagine some of that comes from his background as an actor. Schilling : Absolutely. Absolutely. He just really knew how to articulate what he wanted, and then I felt really safe and free because I think that when a director has been an actor, he really understands the vulnerability of sort of being in front of the camera and has the ability to make the set very safe. He completely understands what that process is like. So that’s rare. MTV : What challenges does your character Christine face in “Argo”? Schilling : Christine is holding down the fort while her husband [played by Affleck] is off kind of doing some big adventurous things. She’s doing the best she can to maintain her home and her relationship, to do right by her child. She’s trying to negotiate what the best plan of action is for her as a woman and to take care of her son and where her relationship fits into that. MTV : So you’ve got both Ben Affleck and Zac Efron as leading men this year. How are you going to top that? Is Brad Pitt next? Schilling : I don’t know. I don’t know where it goes from here. Brad Pitt, bring it. Check out everything we’ve got on “The Lucky One” and “Argo.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Adrianne Palicki Is Ready For A ‘Badass’ 2012

With roles in ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ and ‘Red Dawn,’ the ‘Friday Night Lights’ alum is One to Watch in 2012. By Kevin P. Sullivan Adrianne Palicki in “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” Photo: MGM If 2012 teaches us anything about Adrianne Palicki, it may be that she knows her way around a machine gun. The former “Friday Night Lights” star finds herself pulling the trigger in two high-profile action movies this year, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and “Red Dawn.” Starring alongside big names like Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Chris Hemsworth and fellow Ones to Watch in 2012 honoree Josh Hutcherson in a single year definitely has our attention, but Palicki kicks ass in her own right. We spoke with Palicki about her big 2012 and the difficulties of finding a date — knowing what she does about hand-to-hand combat. MTV : First off, I have to congratulate you on being included in MTV’s Ones to Watch 2012. Adrianne Palicki : Thank you very much. It’s very cool. I’m very flattered. MTV : You have such a huge year coming up. Palicki : Yeah, they keep telling me that. [ Laughs. ] It’s surreal. Part of it is, “Red Dawn” I shot three years ago, so that feels so foreign to know that’s actually going to come out this year. “G.I. Joe,” we literally got off the plane from New Orleans and the trailer was out. I’ve never experienced anything like that. I feel like I’m still working right now. When we were shooting, it was less than a year until it came out. We knew that. It was just shocking. MTV : The fan response to the “G.I. Joe” trailer seemed overwhelmingly positive. Palicki : It was a pleasant surprise, because this is a reboot. It’s scary going into the shoes that have already been worn. We wanted to do something really unique and special. With such an amazing group of talented actors, you don’t want it to fall flat. How many people reached out, it’s unbelievable to hear the comments that they’re so excited, that the trailer is better than the first movie was. Just really cool reactions that you’re going, “OK, hopefully we don’t let you down.” I really don’t think we will. I think it’s going to be a really fun ride for everybody. MTV : It had to be a fun movie to shoot, right? Palicki : Oh my God, it was a blast. Jon Chu, he’s this genius. The thing that’s so special about him is that he might be the biggest G.I. Joe fan on the planet, so that really came in our favor. He’s young and interesting and full of ambition. We really did things that were super exciting and super scary, and I really feel everything’s going to come out really, really well. MTV : What was the scariest thing you had to do on set? Palicki : We did have to scale a wall, but after seeing “Mission: Impossible 4,” I’m like, “Well, I guess it wasn’t that scary.” An 18-foot wall compared to a skyscraper. The fun thing is that we get to do a lot of our own stunts. MTV : Were you a fan of “G.I. Joe” when you were growing up? Palicki : Oh yeah, definitely. I have a big brother, so anything he liked, I liked. He was super big into comic books, so I was super big into comic books. He was super big into G.I. Joe, and I wanted to be Jinx so badly. I don’t know just if it was that she was wearing a red costume or what, but I wanted to be a ninja. MTV : Were you disappointed to be Lady Jaye then? Palicki : Lady Jaye’s a badass. I couldn’t really be disappointed with Lady Jaye. She’s the one chick in the boys club. She can hold her own. She doesn’t get the staff, but she is a weapons specialist. She has that going for her. MTV : What was it like working with two huge action stars, Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis? Palicki : Dwayne is like a teddy bear. I know his fans probably don’t want to hear that. He might be one of the nicest people on the planet, genuinely. Very caring and very giving. Bruce is a kick in the pants. We get along really well, but he definitely came in during the middle of shooting for a week, added some flavor and left. But he was really fun to work with. I really enjoyed him. MTV : How comfortable are you with a machine gun now? Palicki : Between “Red Dawn,” “Wonder Woman” and now “G.I. Joe,” I feel like I could actually go and really harm some people with my hands. I feel like a Navy SEAL. It’s been fun. I mean, I get paid to do this sh–. I get paid to shoot an AK-47 or a .50 cal or punch some dudes in the face or groin or whatever. It’s a really fun job. MTV : What’s it like having “Red Dawn” come out after all this time? Palicki : It’s weird, because I’m so very removed from it. It was such a great experience, and I enjoyed it so much. Honestly, there’s been some disappointment for me because it’s going to be released and then it’s not. It’s going to be released and then it’s not. I’m relieved. I’m really excited it’s coming out, and I’m excited to see it myself. I haven’t seen it in a year, and I’m sure it’s changed quite a bit. MTV : Back then Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson weren’t exactly the huge stars they are today. Palicki : Oh, Josh Hutcherson. I love him so much. It’s crazy. We were babies. It’s going to be so funny to see myself in “G.I. Joe” before playing an 18-year-old in “Red Dawn.” It’s just insane. We’re all just babies. Chris was training to go shoot “Thor” when we were shooting that movie. It’s crazy. It was so long ago. MTV : How does it feel having these two action movies coming out in same year? Palicki : It’s very strange, and it’s like, “OK, I guess I’ll be an action star. Why not?” I will never have a date again, but it’s cool, whatever. Men are going to be afraid of me. It’s really special, and I’m excited. It’s going to be a very busy year for me. MTV : One of your fellow Ones to Watch is … Palicki : Taylor Kitsch . I know that guy! He’s awesome. I miss him. He’s the nicest guy. He’s Canadian, I mean, need I say more? He also has the most ridiculous, disgusting sense of humor than anyone I’ve met. He’s so raunchy, and when it comes out of his mouth, because he’s Canadian and because he’s so nice, it comes out of nowhere. It just makes it that much funnier. MTV : Who’s going to have the bigger year? Palicki : Oh God, I can’t. I think Taylor’s going to have the bigger year. I’m not going to lie. He has a lot coming out this year and all different kinds of movies. I’m really proud of him. He deserves it. He’s worked really hard. I’m excited to see where he goes with his career. The thing is, he’s not just a pretty face. I mean, he has a very pretty face, by the way, but that’s not all he has. What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support.
