Odd Future MC makes his VMA debut with nominations for Video of the Year and Best New Artist. By Rob Markman Tyler, the Creator Photo: Julian Berman He’s a self-proclaimed “f—in’ walkin’ paradox,” and in 2011, contradiction is the new “keeping it real,” as Tyler, the Creator proved each time he opened his mouth — whether to rap or eat a cockroach. Much like his music, Tyler’s breakout video for “Yonkers” was as shocking as it was artistic, earning him VMA noms for Best New Artist and Video of the Year. “I’m really excited, shout-out to Ron Artest. If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I’m gonna be mad because they all suck — except for Adele’s,” Tyler told MTV News of his nomination in July. Tyler himself directed the black-and-white clip for “Yonkers” under the alias Wolf Haley. The song’s rhyme couplets are as striking as the images. The rebel rapper basically told Christ to grow a pair when he spit, “Jesus called, he said he’s sick of the disses/ I told him to quit bitchin’, this isn’t a f—in’ hot line.” It is rabblerousing like this that propelled Tyler and his crew of hip-hop misfits Odd Future to the forefront of rap’s conversation this year. The actual art seemingly took a backseat with critics. It all erupted in 2009 when Tyler released his free digital album, Bastard. The online fanfare would spill over, shining a light on Creator’s group as well: Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. In addition to Tyler, there is the exiled Earl, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, Domo Genesis, Mike G and R&B fire-starter Frank Ocean, among others. By the time Tyler and the group performed the single “Sandwitches” with the Roots on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” in February, the hype began to spill over, and seemingly everyone was talking about the rapping kid who decorated his stage with gnomes and wore a green ski mask on national television. Simple yet effective, the “Yonkers” video — which has racked up more than 18 million views on YouTube — starts with the rapper seated on a stool, rapping the song’s lyrics while playing with a large cockroach, which he later throws up. A visibly disturbed Tyler continues to spit the track’s second verse, stripping off his shirt then putting his neck in a noose. In the video’s shocking ending, the MC stands up on the chair and kicks the stool from under his feet as his legs dangle in a simulated suicide. “Damn, I’m Looking At The Video Treatment I wrote In This Blackberry Back In Jan. F—!” Tyler tweeted after he learned of the nomination. For someone who notoriously bucks critics and mainstream music outlets, snagging a Moonman is pretty high on Tyler, the Creator’s to-do list. Then again he is a “f—in’ walkin’ paradox.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Clip also nominated for Best Male Video and Best Pop Video at Sunday’s 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. By Jocelyn Vena Bruno Mars in his “Grenade” music video Photo: Elektra Records For Bruno Mars ‘ deeply personal breakup track “Grenade,” the pop crooner hooked up with a man who truly understands dark images: Australian music video director Nabil Elderkin, who has cooked up clips for the likes of Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Diddy and will.i.am. The duo created a clip that mirrors the heartache of the song, where Mars sings about loving someone who won’t love him back. The video dropped in November and has racked up hundreds of millions of views online. It’s also up for three Moonmen at Sunday’s 2011 MTV Video Music Awards , including Best Male Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year. For those who have yet to check out the video, Mars pines over a lovely young lady. To prove his love for her, he puts on his Sunday best and drags his piano across Los Angeles, meeting up with unsavory characters along the way. When he does finally get to his beloved’s house, he sees that she is hooking up with another fellow. Heartbroken, he drags his piano away from the home, up one very difficult hill and ends up at a railroad track. Does a completely devastated Mars get hit by the train? Well, that’s the video’s great, deep, dark mystery. “It was my concept,” the singer told MTV News earlier this month. “I said, ‘I want to drag a piano.’ I got my friend Nabil to come direct it, and it was a risk because I still hear jokes to this day like, ‘What the hell you doing dragging a piano?’ ” he said. “But it’s my art, so shut up!” Mars, who hit the stage with B.o.B at the 2010 VMAs , is pretty stoked about having the video make the final cut as one of the nominees for Video of the Year . “I grew up watching VMAs. I know every performance,” Mars said. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been watching MTV VMAs, and when we got the phone call saying that my video was up for Video of the Year, that’s the big-boy award.” Mars is also up for a Best Choreography VMA for his much-more-fun “The Lazy Song” clip. He’s also set to take the stage as one of Sunday night’s performers . Of all the features set to premiere at this year’s Toronto Film Festival , only one production resulted in the deportation of its lead . That film is Luc Besson’s biopic The Lady , which stars Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actress and Burmese deportee Michelle Yeoh as Suu Kyi, the Nobel Prize winner and Burmese government protester. Finally, a teaser trailer for this controversial picture has surfaced.
Mars, who is performing at Sunday’s show, throws an old-school house party in the clip. By Jocelyn Vena Bruno Mars in his 2011 VMA promo Photo: MTV In Bruno Mars ‘ VMA promo, he hangs out with some fresh-looking hipsters while spinning tunes from folks like Ginuwine and Michael Jackson. The clip captures the joie de vivre of a good old-fashioned house party attended by fashionable folks who love to dance. “I think what you’re going to see is a little of my personality, a lot of my influences and a lot of people having a good time,” he told MTV News on the set. “I think that this year’s VMAs is a celebration and a party, and MTV did a great job of putting this commercial together.” In between takes, the party never stopped. Extras and dancers milled around, grooving to the tunes blasting throughout the NYC soundstage. Bruno chilled with everyone, making small talk with his fellow partygoers when the cameras weren’t rolling. The commercial itself is chockfull of great tunes, and when Mars was shooting the promo, he displayed his skills on the piano. So what tunes make Bruno Mars’ party set list? “This is my party; I’m DJing. I’m playing music that I grew up listening to,” he said. “I grew up listening to oldies, and so every time I hear, like, Little Richard or James Brown, the Police, it does something to me. It gets me in the party mood, and I’m just hoping to bring it to this party.” Not only is he set to perform at the VMAs — airing live Sunday at 9 p.m. from L.A. — he’s up for four Moonmen, including Video of the Year , Best Male Video and Best Pop Video for “Grenade.” “I grew up watching VMAs. I know every performance,” Mars said. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been watching MTV VMAs, and when we got the phone call saying that my video was up for Video of the Year — that’s the big-boy award.” Mars would be tickled to win Best Choreography for his feel-good track “The Lazy Song.” “You know what I’m excited for?” he said. “As much as I put blood, sweat and tears into ‘Grenade,’ I’m excited for ‘The Lazy Song,’ Best Choreography.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Couple says they are ‘thrilled’ to have a sibling for Violet and Seraphina. By Jocelyn Vena Jennifer Garner Photo: FilmMagic Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck are making room for one more baby. The couple confirmed that they are expecting their third child. They confirmed the news to The Associated Press, simply saying that they are “thrilled” to have another baby. The pair, who married in 2005 already have two daughters, Violet, 5, and Seraphina , 2. “She’s always wanted three kids,” a source told a href=”http://www.usmagazine.com/momsbabies/news/jennifer-garner-pregnant-with-third-child-2011228″ target=”_blank”> UsMagazine.com of Garner. “This was her plan all along.” In addition to a growing family, Garner and Affleck still have busy film careers to juggle. Video of the Year nominee is packed with characters from the Beasties’ past. By James Montgomery Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride in the Beastie Boy’s “Make Some Noise” video Photo: Capitol If they’ve been anything over the course of their near-30-year career, the Beastie Boys have always been thorough, the kind of band that derives some sort of perverse pleasure from peppering their music with a sundry of pop-culture references, inside jokes and exhaustively sought, expertly placed samples. And because of that, they’ve managed to create their own rather insular world, the kind of place where Mantan Moreland hangs out with Ted Danson, where Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks” rubs elbows with Les Baxter’s “Prelude in C# Minor.” And luckily for all of us, each time they release an album, they pull the curtain back slightly, and invite us in for a drink. So it’s fitting that their “Make Some Noise” clip (which is up for Video of the Year at this Sunday’s VMAs) may very well be the most thorough thing they’ve ever done: a glorious, goofy thing that’s packed with references to their past, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it jokes and more celebrity cameos than Michael Jackson’s “Liberian Girl.” To wit, it’s certainly the only Video of the Year nominee to have begun life as a 30-minute mini-movie, and it’s the kind of thing that requires repeat viewings to thoroughly enjoy — which, given everything the Beasties packed into it (and the three-decade lead-up to its creation) is sort of the point, really. Back in April, immediately following its premiere (as a short film called “Fight for Your Right Revisited” ), we compiled an annotated guide to the galaxy of stars who make cameos — a list that includes everyone from Susan Sarandon to Danny Masterson — and the sly references that you might have missed. But now, with the VMAs right around the corner, we’ve gone back and watched “Make Some Noise” again, and boy, are we amazed at the amount of stuff we didn’t catch the first time through. Then again, such is the beauty of the video (and the Beastie Boys for that matter): They’re always willing to go the extra mile, with delightfully ridiculous results. Here now are even more moments from “Make Some Noise,” a video that takes a look back at the B-Boys’ rather glorious past, and one that, if anything, is definitely thorough. George Drakoulias Greek music producer/pal of early Beasties’ collaborator Rick Rubin, Drakoulias was immortalized in a line on the Paul’s Boutique track “Stop That Train” (“Bought a hot dog from who? George Drakoulias”). Fittingly, Drak shows up in “Make Some Noise,” selling Danny McBride’s MCA a street dog. Of course, in typical Beastie fashion, the role is actually played by actor Clint Caluory, and he’s officially credited as “Clint as Zach Galifianakis as George Drakoulias.” “Hey Ladies” Paul’s Boutique single that is consistently referenced in the “Make Some Noise” clip, particularly in the limo scene, where driver Will Ferrell sports a gold tooth (a reference to the line “She’s got a gold tooth, you know she’s hard-core”) and bangs on a cowbell (just like the song). The whole thing concludes with the Beasties getting booted from the backseat, just like the line “She’ll show you a good time, then she’ll show you the door.” All that’s missing is a cameo by Sadaharu Oh. “Hold It, Now Hit It” Single from the License to Ill era, it’s also referenced during the limo scene, when Mike D (or, you know, Seth Rogen) asks for some LSD-laced breath drops with the line “Pass that over here man, all right!” which, as any Beasties aficionado will tell you, is the same phrase uttered in the song. Johnny Ryall Titular star of the Paul’s Boutique track, he’s a homeless man with a rockabilly past and bread-bag shoes. In “Make Some Noise,” he’s played by actor Orlando Bloom, and while the big O isn’t rocking Wonder Bread slip-ons (or hand-me-down Pumas), he does sport a rather nice Def Jam windbreaker. Also displays impressive window-washing skills. “Shake Your Rump” Second track on Paul’s Boutique (and, in a lot of ways, the album’s official kickoff), it’s also referenced in the “Make Some Noise” limo scene, when MCA takes a rip off a nitrous-filled balloon, a nod to the line “In the back of the ride and bust with the whippit .” “She’s Crafty” Snotty License to Ill track on which the Beasties paid homage to several down-and-dirty females, including one who manages to rob them of all their possessions, including a mirror, a TV, a remote control and a skateboard. In a sublimely meta “Make Some Noise” moment, the Boys return the favor, swiping the skateboard back from a girl played by Adam Yauch’s real life daughter. Sir Stewart Wallace International man of mystery portrayed by Yauch in the Beasties’ epochal “Sabotage” video, Wallace shows up for just a second in “Make Some Noise,” piling out of the back of a cab and dropping his briefcase (which appears to be filled with bricks of cocaine) in the process. But this time around, it’s artist/director Mike Mills who steps into Sir Stew’s eternally pressed suit. What did we miss? Let us know in the comments! Learn how an army of Beliebers almost mauled the 2010 VMA host on ‘VMAs Revealed,’ airing Saturday at noon ET on MTV. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: WireImage It seems that Justin Bieber can’t so much as step outside without inciting a riot of considerable magnitude, so it was to be expected that his performance at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards — supposedly a secret song-and-dance routine set outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles — would probably attract some attention. But VMA producers had no idea just how out-of-hand things would get — or how close VMA host Chelsea Handler would be to being mauled by Justin’s army of Beliebers as a result. It was all thanks to one harmless tweet by JB himself, as we learn in “VMAs Revealed,” a new behind-the-scenes special set to air this Saturday at noon ET on MTV. It all started before the VMAs, during Bieber’s rehearsals. Producers planned to have Handler exit the theater and take a spot at the front of the stage, holding a sign that read “Chelsea hearts Justin.” Everything was going swimmingly until an army of Bieber fanatics got wind of things. “Out on the Nokia Plaza, they were rehearsing Justin Bieber’s performance,” MTV News VP Ryan Kroft explains in “Revealed.” “[And] if you sort of stopped and paid attention, out comes Chelsea Handler in curlers.” Of course, on the night of the big show — after Bieber had tweeted about “free tickets to [his] VMA performance” — things changed. The Nokia Plaza was positively packed with screaming Bieber fans, who didn’t take kindly to Handler’s intrusion — and they let her know by crowding up against a barricade, nearly crushing her and sending all plans out the window. Producers never quite got a good shot of Handler and her sign — “I think you can see her sign bobbing around, you just can’t see her head. She should’ve worn the curlers,” Kroft said — but luckily, she escaped serious bodily harm. And the true Beliebers ended up being happy too: Not only did they get to see a once-in-a-lifetime performance from their idol, but Bieber would go on to win the VMA for Best New Artist later that night.
