SAG Awards Seating Chart: Where ‘Glee’ Sits Next To ‘True Grit’

For Sunday’s awards show, producer explains science behind celebrity seating. By Kelly Marino SAG Awards producer Kathy Connell Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — The Screen Actors Guild Awards are coming up on Sunday, and preparations are already well under way at the Shrine Auditorium. The stage is coming together, the list of presenters is close to being finalized and, most importantly, the seating arrangements are being mapped out. “It depends on the size of the cast,” SAG Awards producer Kathy Connell explained when MTV News asked how the seating chart is determined. “It also depends on if they were here the year before. If the TV cast was down front, we are probably going to put them further back this year. We also try to be democratic between film and TV.” The ceremony will take place in an intimate dinner setting where both film and TV actors will be seated next to their peers. Throughout the show, the celebrities can nosh on food provided by Lucques Catering and sip on Dry Creek wine and Taittinger Champagne while they celebrate one another’s work. The Guild seats the film casts next to the TV casts in order to allow everyone to visit and mingle in between acts. For example, the first few tables located in the front of the venue have place cards for the cast of “True Grit” seated next to the cast of “Glee.” Moving more toward the center of the room reveals the actors of “The Kids Are All Right” seated next to the guys from “30 Rock.” And a quick look around the rest of the room shows the ensemble from “The Closer” seated next to “Modern Family,” who are across from the cast of “The Fighter” and “Hot in Cleveland.” “Actors are actors. They don’t care that they are on TV. In fact, you know, film actors are very, very fond of watching actors on TV and vice versa,” Connell said. The 17th annual SAG Awards will air live on TNT and TBS this Sunday at 8p.m. ET from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. For Discussion: Why This Year Will Be “The Whitest Oscars” In A While

The 83rd annual Academy Awards nominations are in and of course there were a lot of snubs, heartbreak and questionable nods but there was also what some critics believed to be a fundamental “breakdown when it comes to honoring black actors.” The Hollywood Reporter’s Film Editor Gregg Kilday, who wrote the article “Whitest Oscar in Ten Years” back in September agrees, that “this year there wasn’t a real small, serious-themed movie about African American subjects that the Academy could turn to for nominations.” Movieline’s S.T. VanAirsdale, however, lays some of the blame directly on the Academy. In an interview with Popeater’s Jo Piazza he says the voting members were “a historically lazy group of viewers who aren’t going to discover or nominate anything independently.” Just last year, many black actors and producers represented in films like The Blind Side, Precious and Invictus. The Best Actress nominees included Gabourey Sidibe and winner Mo’Nique. It was also the same year that Geoffrey Fletcher became the first black winner of a Best Screenplay Oscar. The years before that usually had at least one black actor or actress nominated from Taraji P. Henson and Viola Davis in 2008, Ruby Dee in 2007, Will Smith and Forest Whitaker in 2006, Terence Howard in 2005, and so on. So what exactly happened this year? Some claim it was a lack of “films that take a serious look at African American themes,” while others blame it on the fact that “Hollywood is making fewer serious, a.k.a. Oscar-worthy films,” in general. But why does the film have to necessarily address so called African American themes? Why not just hire the best actor/actress for the role. Then again, this is Hollywood. While many of these things leave me scratching my head. One thing I can say for sure is that in 2011, there still seems to be an underlying problem of casting any minority as a lead actor or actress in a film. Do we even need to address the whitewashing of “The Last Airbender” or the whole “Prince of Persia” fiasco. Now whether this all stems from a fear of the film becoming stereotyped, a box-office flop or the fear of not being able to attract the cross marketing/multimillion-dollar campaigns necessary to garner Oscar attention is still up for debate. All I can say for sure is that Hollywood needs to get it together asap. Or should I start to address the other issue of why 90% of GLBT actors do not play GLBT roles in TV or film? Or is that asking too much? Discuss…. Source

‘Toy Story 3’ Filmmakers Rendered ‘Speechless’ By Oscar Nominations

‘I feel like I’ve been blasted to infinity and beyond,’ director Lee Unkrich says. By Terri Schwartz “Toy Story 3” Photo: Disney/Pixar Pixar and Disney continued to set the standard for quality animation with this year’s “Toy Story 3,” and so it was no surprise when the film was nominated for five Academy Awards Tuesday morning (January 25): Best Picture, Best Animated Feature, Original Song, Achievement in Sound Editing and Adapted Screenplay. It’s the second year in a row that a Pixar/Disney film has been nominated in both the Best Picture and Best Animated Feature categories, and director Lee Unkrich is feeling the love. “It’s an incredible honor to be nominated by the Academy. When we began making the first ‘Toy Story’ nearly 16 years ago, we never could have imagined the journey on which these films, and these characters, would take us,” he said in a statement. “For ‘Toy Story 3’ to be recognized by the Academy as not only one of the best animated films of the year, but also as one of the 10 best pictures of the year, is both humbling and overwhelming. I’m speechless — I feel like I’ve been blasted to infinity and beyond.” MTV News caught up with Unkrich on the phone to talk to him about the nomination, which he called “completely mind-blowing.” He said he was so prepped for the nominations announcement this morning that he set his alarm and watched the live stream of the announcements with his wife and 13-year-old daughter. Unkrich said he was disappointed that the Best Animated Feature was limited to only three films, because there were many other great animated films this year that weren’t acknowledged. ” ‘Tangled’ didn’t get nominated and I was really rooting for them, they really deserved to be in there. And I’m disappointed for those guys because they made a really beautiful film that was definitely Oscar-worthy,” Unkrich said. This is the first time a “Toy Story” film has been nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar because the first two installments were released in 1995 and 1999, and the category was not created until 2001. The “Toy Story” films have never won an Oscar before. At least “Toy Story 3” seems like a shoe-in for Best Animated Feature. It’s also the second time a “Toy Story” film has been nominated for its screenplay. The first “Toy Story” was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, with Joss Whedon, Andrew Stanton, Joel Cohen, Alec Sokolow, John Lasseter, Pete Docter and Joe Ranft getting story and writing credits. For “Toy Story 3,” it is Oscar-winner Michael Arndt who is credited with writing the screenplay for the film, and he couldn’t be more pleased. Considering it’s only his second writing credit (after “Little Miss Sunshine”), he certainly has a right to be. “I’ve spent my whole life being inspired and moved by the work of the screenwriters of the Academy, so to be recognized by the Writers Branch this morning is deeply gratifying and profoundly humbling,” Arndt said in a statement. “While I wish I could hog all the credit for myself, I would have gone nowhere and done nothing without the collective brilliance of the entire creative community at Pixar, who have always maintained that ‘story comes first’ and who are crazy enough to actually believe it.” In addition to the four nominations for “Toy Story 3,” the Pixar short that premiered before the film, “Day & Night,” also received a nomination, for Best Animated Short. This is director Teddy Newton’s second directing credit. He is best known for his voice acting in Pixar films (he was Chatter Telephone in “Toy Story 3”). “I thank the Academy for this extraordinary recognition. Creating ‘Day & Night’ with the high-quality team of artists and technicians within Pixar was truly a non-stop sensation of positive energy for me. I was constantly amazed by the crew’s fortitude to push through challenges and inspire each other with their ingenuity,” Newton said in a statement. Check out everything we’ve got on “Toy Story 3.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
