Dr. Dre’s Detox, Shyne’s Return And More Hip-Hop Stories To Watch

Mixtape Daily gears up for new music from veteran rappers and a crop of breakthrough MCs, including Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole and Jay Electronica. By Jayson Rodriguez Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre Photo: Interscope Drake-mania, Barbies, reunions, arrests and more dominated the hip-hop headlines in 2010. Lil Wayne went to jail and came out, and T.I. got out of jail only to go back in months later. Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj proved the ladies can still get behind a mic, and Drake delivered on his potential with a stellar debut album. Now, looking ahead to the next 12 months, the year in hip-hop promises to be bigger and better than the last, from Dr. Dre’s return to a slew of hungry new rappers ready to vie for the Hottest MC crown. Here, Mixtape Daily presents part one of our preview of stories to follow in ’11. You know what it is. Detox Is (Really) Coming The doctor is finally in! Dr. Dre is set to release his long-in-the-works Detox album . He’s already in promotional mode, having graced the cover of the most recent XXL and dropped his new single, “Kush,” featuring Snoop Dogg and Akon. After a few false starts, Dre is finally on pace to put out the project, which could also prove to be the launching pad for newcomer Kendrick Lamar’s career. Though he’s not signed with the super-producer, the upstart MC is poised to be the latest breakout from Dre’s albums, following perhaps in the footsteps of Snoop ( The Chronic ) and Xzibit ( 2001 ). Put your drink down and enjoy this one. Dipset, Dipset, Dipset This merry band of Harlem bandits put their differences aside last year and celebrated re-grouping with the rumbling “Salute,” their first collective effort in years. Since, Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Freekey Zekey have gotten back to their old Diplomats tricks. They’ve ruffled a few feathers (Cam and Jones took a few shots at former labelmate Kanye West on their version of “Runaway”), re-injected their sense of humor into the game (joining Kanye for “Christmas in Harlem”) and stoked rumors the New York collective will join Jimmy Iovine’s Interscope Records. Reunited, and it feels so good. Jay and ‘Ye What more can we say? Two of hip-hop’s reigning kings are joining forces for a full-length project that should provide material for playlists for the rest of the year. The pair dropped their first single, “H.A.M.,” first thing Tuesday (January 11), and the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust, like everyone else, will now analyze, debate and dissect the Lex Luger-powered number. The Now School Big names usually lead the release schedule each Tuesday, but this year, an influx of new stars is set to debut, including Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole, Jay Electronica, CyHi the Prynce, Big K.R.I.T. and a solo Pusha T. The collective should ignite the game in the coming months as their profiles grow. With established acts like 50 Cent leaning toward Hollywood and veterans like Nas opting for alternative projects, the young guns have taken aim and are ready to fire. Take cover. Shyne On Hip-hop’s prodigal son, Shyne, is expected to release not one, but two albums this year: his next project on Def Jam (his last for the label was 2004’s self-titled LP) and another tentatively slated to bear the Cash Money Records logo. After serving nearly 10 years behind bars for his involvement in the infamous Club New York shooting, the Brooklyn rapper was deported to Belize, where he’s now based. Despite a rather tepid response to new material he put out last year, the outspoken MC remains as fascinating an artist as hip-hop has seen in recent years. He’s converted to Orthodox Judaism, but his rhymes still feature the potent realism of his previous work. Will his future be as bright as his once-promising past? Mixtape Daily ‘s two-part 2011 preview continues Thursday, and your favorite hip-hop column will be back on the daily grind Tuesday, January 18, where you’ll find the best coverage on all things rap, from mixtapes to DJs to MCs to culture. Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon And More 2011 Movie Pairs

Brad Pitt & Jonah Hill and Johnny Depp & Penelope Cruz also will team up onscreen this year. By Eric Ditzian Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” Photo: Disney As frigid temperatures and frozen banks of filthy snow have taken hold outside the MTV News offices in Times Square, we’ve been warming ourselves with thoughts of what’s to come at the multiplex in 2011, where heavy doses of buttered popcorn and Sno-caps will keep us content all year round. In the months to come, we’ll take in a series of films featuring highly anticipated twosomes, some romantic and others platonic, some heavy on explosive laughs, and others featuring heavy explosions. Here are our picks for the big-screen pairings we’re most looking forward to checking out this year: Robert Pattinson & Reese Witherspoon in “Water for Elephants” Sure, RPattz will once again share the screen opposite Kristen Stewart in 2011, but he’s been mining the same limited “Twilight” material for a while now, and we’re keen to see how he manages when his character has more emotional motivation than simply protecting his beloved. While we enjoyed his turn in last year’s romantic drama “Remember Me,” a performance opposite the Oscar-winning Witherspoon in “Elephants” will mark Pattinson’s biggest opportunity yet to establish himself as a formidable talent. The first trailer mostly showcased RPattz in smoldering default mode . Can the 24-year-old Brit step it up? Can his chemistry with Witherspoon begin to compare, in fan’s eyes, with the Bella-Edward-Jacob love triangle? Answers will arrive with the film’s release in April. Brad Pitt & Jonah Hill in “Moneyball” At first glance, we’ll admit, this seems like an odd match. But consider: Hill is just beginning to scratch the surface of his acting range, as his deeply strange and strangely affecting turn in “Cyrus” made clear. Pitt, meanwhile, is a proven comedic talent. The two play fast-talking, ego-heavy execs for the Oakland A’s. With a dramatic, real-life story line about the hard-scrabble, small-market ball club and a script that got a makeover from dialogue whiz Aaron Sorkin, “Moneyball” has the perfect framework for a memorable dynamic between Pitt and Hill. Shia LaBeouf & Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” One can hardly call what LaBeouf and Megan Fox shared onscreen in two “Transformers” flicks “magical,” so LaBeouf and Huntington-Whiteley’s pairing in “Dark of the Moon” won’t be a case of recapturing cinematic gold. Yet the comparisons will be inevitable, even if Michael Bay’s directing for his leading “Transformers” ladies seems to begin and end with, “Look hot!” We look forward to seeing how LaBeouf and Huntington-Whiteley play off each other, one a savvy vet of Spielberg and Stone movies, the other a Victoria’s Secret model making her big-screen debut. Johnny Depp & Penelope Cruz in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” Jack Sparrow’s adventures on the high seas have usually taken precedence over his adventures in the bedroom. “On Stranger Tides” could well change all that. With Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley out of the picture, the head-butting between Depp’s Captain Jack and Cruz’s swashbuckling beauty will take center stage. Are we ready to see the softer side of the dreadlocked pirate? Simon Pegg & Nick Frost in “Paul” Has it really been almost four years since these comedic pals were onscreen together in “Hot Fuzz”? Any time the British funnymen get together, we’ll be first in line for a ticket. This year will bring them back for a third cinematic turn, following “Fuzz” and 2004’s “Shaun of the Dead.” “Paul” is a sci-fi comedy in which Pegg and Frost play conspiracy-minded friends on a road trip to a purported alien-landing sight, where — much to their surprise — they actually discover an alien. Frost and Pegg excel when challenging themselves with such high-concept comedic obstacles, and if the film’s trailers are any indication, they’ve got another winner on their hands. Daniel Craig & Rooney Mara in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” The role of troubled hacker Lisbeth Salander was one of the most coveted in Hollywood last year until Mara, a relative unknown, won the part. She’ll star opposite Craig, who plays journalist (and Salander’s love interest) Mikael Blomkvist. The “Tattoo” stars have a lot to live up to: The book on which the film is based was a best-seller across the globe, and the Swedish adaptation has garnered plaudits from critics and audiences alike. But we’ve got high hopes: David Fincher is in the director’s chair, and the story line sizzles with emotional stakes and high-tension plot twists. Nas Talks Lost Tapes Vol. 2, Label Issues

The rapper says he may release the rarities collection later this year as part of a deluxe version of his next studio album. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Nas Photo: MTV News Nas’ anticipated The Lost Tapes: Vol. 2 could be fans’ gain and current label Def Jam’s loss. The rapper revealed that he intends to release the project as part of a special-edition version of his next album, due out later this year. “Because I kind of lost time, I really wanted to release [the album] in December,” Nas told MTV News just before the holidays. “But I’m starting my next album. So I feel like I’ll probably give The Lost Tapes as a deluxe, maybe, on the next album for free. I’m trying to figure that out now.” In October, Nas allegedly blasted his recording home after the company reportedly bungled the release of The Lost Tapes project, which is a collection of unreleased gems from the gifted MC that skew toward his more poetic side. An e-mail message from the Queens rapper sent to executives at Def Jam was obtained by a blog and posted online. In the note, Nas expressed frustration over what he characterized as his label’s lack of activity surrounding the project; the first volume was a critically acclaimed collection issued in 2002 that included material left off of his studio albums after the songs were pirated. “You don’t get another Nas recording that doesn’t count against my deal … PERIOD!” Nas wrote at the time . “Keep your bullsh– $200,000 fund. Open the REAL budget. This is a New York pioneer’s ALBUM, there ain’t many of us. I am ready to drop in the 4th quarter. You don’t even have sh– coming out! Stop being your own worst enemy. Let’s get money!” Now, however, Nas says he’s not sure which label would release his next album. “It’s not safe to say that it’s gonna be on Def Jam,” he told MTV News. “You know, news at 11. We coming with the information on that soon.” Would you be interested in buying Nas’ Lost Tapes Vol. 2 as part of a deluxe package with his next album? Tell us in the comments. Related Artists Nas
