Maryam Mirzakhani, First Woman to Win Math’s Highest Honor, Dies At 40

Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian who became the first woman to win math’s most prestigious prize, died Saturday after a four-year battle with breast cancer. She was 40 years old. In 2014, Mirzakhani was awarded the Fields Medal, which is commonly referred to as the “Nobel Prize for Mathematics” in order for those outside of the industry to fully grasp its importance. It’s only given out once every four years and Mirzakhani earned the distinction for her work on dynamical systems and complex geometry. Along with being the first female, she was also the first Iranian to garner the medal, which was created in 1936. Born in Tehran, Mirzakhani came to the United States in order to attend graduate school at Harvard University. She started working as a professor at Stanford University in 2008 and the school confirmed her passing on Saturday via its website. “Maryam is gone far too soon, but her impact will live on for the thousands of women she inspired to pursue math and science,” said Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne in a statement, adding: “Maryam was a brilliant mathematical theorist, and also a humble person who accepted honors only with the hope that it might encourage others to follow her path. “Her contributions as both a scholar and a role model are significant and enduring, and she will be dearly missed here at Stanford and around the world.” For the final four years of her life, Mirzakhani battle breast cancer, which eventually spread to her bone marrow. In response to her passing, Iranian-American scientist Firouz Naderi shared his grief on Instagram, writing the following on Instagram: “A light was turned off today… It breaks my heart.” He later emphasized that Mirzakhani was a “genius, but also a daughter, a mother and a wife.” Mirzakhani once famous said that mathematics made her feel like a detective. “It is fun – it’s like solving a puzzle or connecting the dots in a detective case,” she said after winning the Fields Medal, according to NPR. “I felt that this was something I could do, and I wanted to pursue this path.” May she rest in peace. Michael Bond Dies; Paddington Bear Creator Was 91

You can be aware of something your whole life without knowing anything about its creator. Paddington Bear’s creator, Michael Bond, has died at age 91. He passed away at home after a brief illness. On December 24th, 1956, Michael Bond noticed a lonely-looking stuffed bear sitting on a shelf. On impulse, he bought it for his wife. Inspired, he wrote A Bear Called Paddington in just 10 days. On October 13th, 1958, that book was published. But that was only the beginning. Paddington Bear’s adventures in books have been ongoing. The last story about the marmalade-loving bear, titled Paddington’s Finest Hour , came out in April. It’s not uncommon for authors to keep publishing until their dying days. Needless to say, it’s very rare for an author to continue writing for 61 years. Not to mention having such a degree of success and a cultural impact that spans the globe. Michael Bond had an Order Of The British Empire, which is like an Order of Merlin from Harry Potter, except real. (I was a kid when Harry Potter came out and there are a lot of things that I thought were wizard things that turned out to just be British) The Duke of Cambridge himself presented Bond with the award in an Investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace. This was only two years ago. HarperCollins issued a statement about Michael Bond’s passing: “It is with great sadness that we announce that Michael Bond, CBE, the creator of one of Britain’s best-loved children’s characters, Paddington, died at home yesterday aged 91 following a short illness.” Michael Bond’s own daughter, Karen Jankel, also spoke about her late father: “It’s a shock to everybody. For me, he was the most wonderful father you can imagine, so obviously our loss is personal.” Of course. So many people think of their favorite singers or actors or writers with regard to their art, celebrity status, and creations. It’s too easy to forget that they’re real people with families and personal relationships that have nothing to do with their craft. Karen, however, seems very aware of her father’s global cultural impact, and her statement includes a nod to that: “But it’s wonderful that he’s left the legacy of his books and Paddington that will live on for ever, which is really very special.” “The whole world is lucky to have had him … Paddington himself is so real to all of us. He’s still a part of our family and we’re very lucky.” We can’t imagine how hard it is to to tailor your response to fans while you’re still grieving. Karen Jankel continues, honoring her father’s work. “For him, writing was his life. It was wonderful he could continue writing until the end,” she said. “Because … Paddington and his other characters were so real to him, he became alive to everybody else.” But she doesn’t leave out his character. “You can tell just by reading his books what a lovely person he was. I never came across anybody who disliked my father.” View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2017: In Memoriam “He was one of those people that people instinctively warmed to and he was as funny as a person and delightful as he was in his writing and as a father.” That is incredibly touching. A lot of people grew up with Paddington Bear, and most of them are old enough to appreciate the joy that this man’s creation brought them as children. Future children will enjoy Paddington Bear all the same — that’s the magic of creating a legacy like that.

Ryan Edwards Drug Use Shocker: Was He Caught Shooting Up?

If you watch Teen Mom: OG online , then by now you’re likely familiar with the ongoing drama surrounding Ryan Edwards’ substance abuse issues. Edwards checked into rehab last month, but not before creating some of the most appalling scenes in the franchise’s history as a result of his addictions. The most recent TM:OG season finale offered viewers a glimpse at Edwards and Mackenzie Standifer’s wedding – a grim, rushed affair that was attended only by Edwards’ parents. Even more surprising than the sullen nature of the occasion, of course, was the manner in which Edwards and Mackenzie arrived at the chapel. A visibly intoxicated Ryan drove himself and his fiancee to the church. He was so high that he frequently nodded off behind the wheel, and Standifer switched off the dash camera, so as to prevent viewers from seeing just how inebriated Edwards really was. On social media, there was a wild uproar from fans over the decision to let Edwards drive under the influence . (Both Standifer and MTV have taken considerable flak for the scene.) Now, eagle-eyed viewers have noticed that further cause for concern was captured on camera in the controversial episode. In several screen grabs from the finale it appears as though Edwards may have recently used intravenous drugs. During the controversial scene in the car, Standifer accuses Edwards of taking Xanax before his wedding ceremony, but now it looks as though even those whom he’s closest to did not realize the severity of Ryan’s drug problem. Dr. Pawan Grover, an addiction specialist who has not treated Edwards tells Radar Online that footage from the show seems to indicate that Ryan had been injecting some sort of substance , most likely of the opioid variety. “Based on Edwards’ history with addiction issues on the show, the images are consistent with track marks,” says Dr. Grover. “Which is a tell-tale sign of chronic intravenous drug use.” Fortunately, Edwards conpleted treatment for his addictions earlier this month. Unfortunately, he remained in in-patient care for a scant four weeks and announced his release with a brutal social media attack on his son’s mother, Maci Bookout. Many fans are taking that as an indication that Ryan has yet to address all of his demons. We’ll have further updates on this story as more information becomes available. More Victoria Justice In A Sexy Swimsuit

I’ve been jealous of a lot of weird sh%t over the years, but I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve ever been jealous of a giant plastic skull. Then again, I’m jealous of pretty much anything that gets to be within 5 feet of Victoria Justice and that perfect body of hers, including that swimsuit she’s currently got on. But who knows. Maybe in my next life, I can come back as one of her bikinis. Fingers crossed!

Mama June: Does Sugar Bear Want Her Back?!

The love story of Mama June and Sugar Bear is … Well, it’s about as strange as you’d imagine a love story between people named Mama June and Sugar Bear to be. Though they’re no longer together , they’ve been through a lot together. They brought Honey Boo Boo into the world, they became famous together after a particularly scandalous appearance on Toddlers and Tiaras. And later, they tried to save their failing relationship, even though Sugar Bear had cheated on June with multiple people and June had dated a child molester at one point when they were broken up. They gave it their best shot — or a shot, anyway — but things didn’t work out. These days, Sugar Bear is married to Jennifer Lamb , and Mama June has unsuccessfully dated a couple of guys. Although it seems like they’ve made up their minds, that their love story is over, that may not be the case. Because another important fact about these people is that Mama June has spent the last several months completely transforming her body — she’s lost a massive amount of weight . And it seems like Sugar Bear might be kicking himself for losing her. According to a new report from Hollywood Life, Sugar Bear got a glimpse of that new Baywatch photo shoot June did — the one where she’s showing off her new bod in that iconic red swimsuit. And it’s making him feel all kinds of ways. Mama June Hits 137 Lbs., Celebrates With Baywatch Photo Shoot! “Sugar Bear is freaking over the pictures of her as a hot Baywatch babe,” a source claims. “He’s kicking himself for messing things up with her.” “If he had any idea she was going to wind up losing all that weight and looking like a supermodel, he would have worked harder to keep her happy.” Sad as it is, “He can’t believe the woman he let go is the same one in those sexy pictures. Now he feels like a doper for letting her go.” Yeah, “doper” is one word we’d use to describe Sugar Bear. But the fact is that even if Sugar Bear does feel this way — and we have our doubts, considering that he’s always shown a preference for bigger ladies — it really doesn’t matter. June has made it beyond clear that she wants nothing to do with him anymore. According to her, he’s been mentally and physically abusive , towards her and towards the kids. And he’s admitted he’s a cheater. Poor Honey Boo Boo says that he’s body-shamed her in the past, and that he rarely talks to her, let alone sees her. Throw in that horrible Mama June: From Not to Hot reunion show, the one where Sugar Bear tried to physically fight with June’s older daughter … a reconciliation doesn’t look all that likely. Hope you find comfort in that photo shoot, Sugar Bear. It’s probably the most of the new Mama June you’ll ever see. View Slideshow: Mama June: See Her Transformation Through the Years!
