Before we delve into the matter of an 18-year-old attending a party where other people might have possibly been consuming alcoholic beverages, let’s do a quick run-down of the week’s top news stories, shall we? Vital government agencies are being silenced; women are being denied life-saving services; 20 million are soon to be stripped of their healthcare; the disastrous Dakota Access Pipeline project is a go; our soon-to-be secretary of state is besties with Vladimir Putin; and our president is about to sanction discrimination on the grounds of religious beliefs. In short, we’re all f–ked. But anyway, we came here to talk about a real scandal: a legal adult attending a film festival in that hotbed of salacious behavior, rural Utah! Yes, according to Radar Online Malia Obama was at Sundance this week, and all eyes were on the former first daughter for signs of a slip-up that could be used to further enrage the millions of Americans who are still pissed about her father’s blackness. Unfortunately, she didn’t morph into Lindsay Lohan the day her family moved out of the White House, so we’ll have go right on paying attention to the fact that our current president wants to turn out southern border a $25 billion border wall. Bummer. So what sort of behavior did Malia engage in in Park City that might warrant the attention of the tabloid press? Well apparently she attended a “controversial new film,” which wouldn’t even be newsworthy if this were the world’s slowest news week and Malia weren’t interning for a prominent indie film producer. But as it happens, Malia is currently working for Harvey Weinstein and American democracy is dying a slow painful death as we speak, which means the fact that a single tabloid editor saw this story and said, “I want 1,000 words on my desk yesterday!” is evidence that we’re living in a dystopian nightmare dreamed up by the ghosts of Orwell and Philip K. Dick. The messed up thing is, this story will gain traction, just like it did when Malia “partied” at a club last week. The narrative began with images of Malia “smoking pot” at Lollapalooza over the summer, and it shows no signs of letting up, We understand the need to distract yourself from the real, terrifying political news of the moment, but there are easier ways to get outraged over nonsense. Just check out Trump’s Twitter page. Last we checked, he was still bitching about the size of his inauguration crowd, because we are truly living in the darkest timeline.
Mary Tyler Moore, the beloved veteran actress who influenced a generation of female comedians via her iconic role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, passed away today in a Connecticut hospital. She was 80 years old. The legendary star was admitted to the hospital this week following a lengthy battle with Diabetes. She also underwent brain surgery in 2011 and has struggled with a number of healthy problems in recent years. In 2014, friends said Moore was suffering from heart and kidney problems and was on the verge of going blind. Hence why she had not been spotted out in public very often. According to TMZ, Moore was on a respirator for over week prior to her passing. Her rep, Mara Buxbaum, issued a statement to TMZ that confirmed this tragic news: “Today, beloved icon, Mary Tyler Moore, passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine. She called Moore “a groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.” All in all, “Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile.” Few women have left as indelible a mark on the entertainment industry as Moore. She rose to fame as the character of Laura Petrie, a wife and mother on The Dick Van Dyke Show, which ran from 1961 through 1966. In 1970, she signed on to portray Mary Richards, a news producer in Minneapolis on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. It ran for seven seasons and is considered one of the funniest, most respected and appreciated sitcoms in TV history. Over the course of its unparalleled run, The Mary Tyler Moore Show won 29 Emmys, a total that has only been surpassed by Saturday Night Live, Frasier and Game of Thrones. Here is a look at Moore and other members of the cast from the mid-70s: On the big screen, Moore was best known for two movies: 1967’s Thoroughly Modern Millie. 1980’s Ordinary People, for which she was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. Moore’s most recent television credits included three episodes of That 70s Show in 2005 and an appearance on Hot in Cleveland in 2013. In May 2011, Moore underwent elective brain surgery to remove a benign meningioma. She was also a self-confessed alcoholic, detailing this personal struggle in a pair of memoirs. A long-time animal rights activist, Moore worked over the years with Farm Sanctuary to raise awareness about the process involved in factory farming. She was dedicated to the compassionate treatment of farm animals and was the co-founder of Broadway Barks, an annual animal adopt-a-thon held in New York City. Married three times, Moore suffered a personal tragedy in 1980. That year, her only child, 24-year old son Richard, died from a self-inflicted shotgun wound after playing with the weapon at home. But it was Moore’s contribution to the world of comedy that will live on forever, in the hearts and minds of so many fans, friends and colleagues. She will forever be on the short list of influential stars, anchoring a TV show as a woman during a time when actresses rarely received such an opportunity. Over the years, we’ve grown quite accustomed to erratic behavior from Lindsay Lohan. But even having spent the past decade or so marveling at the new and interesting places that LiLo’s been able to take her career as a former actress and professional trainwreck, we still never saw her latest reinvention coming. You see, Lindsay recently decided she wants to stop being young Courtney Love and start being young Angelina Jolie … with a little bit of James Bond villain mixed in. It all started with the reports that Lohan might be a Turkish spy . That sounds like a joke, but there’s actually legitimate reason to believe that Lohan is in league with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. We’ve already spent much of the day contemplating our president-elect receiving golden showers from Russian hookers , and we’re feeling pretty drained, so just click the link above if you’re curious as to why so many believe Linds is also in the pocket of a foreign government. Anyway, it may seem impossible, but things only got weirder from there. First, Lohan adopted an accent that can only be described as “Carmen San Diego meets freshman year drama student.” Shortly thereafter, she composed a poem about ISIS and posted it on her Instagram page, because apparently her years of hard drug use haven’t done enough to shorten her life expectancy. Now, in what may are taking as a sign that Lindsay is putting the washed-up celebrity life behind her in favor of a more spiritual existence, the actress has deleted every photo from her IG page and left only a message: “Alaikum salam,” it reads. The words mean “peace be unto you” in Arabic, and while Lindsay has been slammed for only showing the most superficial interest in Middle Eastern culture, we say, if she’s serious about bettering herself through involvement in a religious community, then that’s just what she should do. Of course, this is still Lindsay Lohan were talking about, so most signs point to her not being remotely serious and just indulging in the sort of “phase” behavior most people outgrow in high school. Yesterday, November 4th, was a big day for Jessa Duggar: it was her 24th birthday! Well, it’s been a big week for her, really, as she so handily explained on Instagram a few days ago. “So many milestones this week for our little family!” she wrote. “I’m overwhelmed by God’s kindness!” “Nov 1st @ben_seewald and I celebrate out anniversary, Nov 3rd baby #2 enters the 3rd trimester, and Nov 5th #SpurgeonElliotSeewald celebrates his 1st birthday!” With all those milestones, Jessa seemed to forget her own birthday, but don’t worry — her husband didn’t. Ben Seewald got on the couple’s website yesterday to share a little letter he wrote with Jessa. And yeah, sure, sometimes this family can be super gross , but this is adorable. “Dearest Jessa,” the letter begins. “It’s your birthday, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to call you some names.” OK, OK, that’s not a great start, but hold on, it gets cute real quick. “‘Jessa-Blessa’: Because you were such a blessing to your parents growing up, and because you’re such a blessing to your own little family now. (Plus it rhymes!)” But wait, there’s more! So much more you might get a toothache. From all the sweetness, get it? Do you get it? “‘Bride’: I could call you ‘wife’ but ‘bride’ carries more of the romantic sentiment of our wedding day. Because I want the young love to continue and remember the vows we made to each other, I’ll call you ‘Bride’ … ‘MY Bride!'” “‘Mother’: Throwing this one in here for Spurgeon and Baby #2 because you are such a loving and caring mother to them. Since they’re too young to say ‘Happy birthday,’ I’ll say it for them.” “‘Beautiful’: Because you are! Inside and out!” “‘Amazing’: Okay … maybe not a name, but you are amazing!” (Ben’s really selling it now, right?) “‘Beloved’: Because you’re my Beloved and you are beloved of God.” Ben wrapped things up by writing “I thank God that He brought you into the world and that He brought us together!” “You’ve blessed my life and the lives of others in so many ways! I love you from the depths of my heart!” “Happy birthday, Sweetheart!” Absolutely nauseating, right? Of course we’d take seeing this over some of the other examples of Duggar marriage sadness we’ve seen recently, but still, it’s a little overwhelming. A few of Jessa’s siblings wrote some simple little “Happy Birthday!” messages on social media, but her parents, good ol’ Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, were the only ones who came close to matching Ben’s thoughtfulness. They wrote a letter of their own, and they addressed it to “Jessa-Blessa,” so it looks like that’s actually a nickname of hers. “You are a blessing to us,” the OG Duggars wrote. “Happy Birthday!” “You went from being a high energy fun loving child, to a fun loving, responsible, mature, visionary, virtuous wife and mother.” “You have inspired thousands of young ladies to seek God, to wait for the one God has for them, and set an example how to dress modern, but modest.” “May God continue to bless your pregnancy, marriage and family.
