John Mayer Proud Of ‘Giant Evolutionary Steps’ On Born And Raised

At intimate New York listening party, singer says new album ‘widened the expectations of what I can do.’ By Jocelyn Vena John Mayer Photo: Mark Sullivan/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Fans and industry folks gathered at the famed Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village on Wednesday night to get an advanced listen to John Mayer ‘s new album, the country-fried, introspective Born and Raised. Before the album even played, Neil Young songs blasted through the hallowed halls of the studio. Given Mayer’s vibe on Born and Raised, which pays homage to the Young sound of the 1970s, it all made sense. When Mayer’s album was eventually put on, it was an easy transition from Young’s jangly guitar and harmonica to Mayer’s own on the album, out Tuesday. The album was recorded at Electric Lady Studios, and the Big Apple is referenced on some tracks, as on many Mayer songs before. “Records are pure reflections,” Mayer told the room. “I’m so proud it’s out. The finish line is so far off [when you’re making the record].” In recent years, Mayer has been through it all. After going TMI crazy in the press in 2010 , he has shied away from media attention. Some of that had to do with the fact that he had surgery on his vocal cords in late 2011. In fact, he still needs to go through another surgery to correct the problem. But he said he plans to record a new album this summer, regardless. “If you’re lucky, you get to make giant evolutionary steps from your first record, so I was able to do that. And you guys, I think, you’re able to come along with that step and be psyched about that evolution and I’m excited to even go further now and start coming up with melodies you haven’t heard yet,” he said, referencing his “Your Body Is a Wonderland” days on his 2001 debut, Room for Squares. During the chat he explained that every song on this album is his favorite, for perhaps the first time in his career, adding that they “widened the expectations of what I can do.” Additionally, after having to cancel his 2012 spring trek , Mayer confirmed he want to hit the road in spring 2013 “and have two records to pull from. … I think I can cheat time a little bit because as you know, I try to cheat time all the time. So I think we can all catch up so that a year from now there’s two records. It’ll be like Born and Raised part two because there’s certain things I want to keep doing.” Related Artists John Mayer

‘Survivor One World’ Winner: ‘I Got Lucky’

‘I feel like people are giving me too much credit,’ Kim Spradlin tells MTV News about winning the latest season of ‘Survivor.’ By Josh Wigler Kim Spradlin Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Thirty-nine days, 18 people, one Survivor … and it’s exactly who it should have been all along. Surprising nobody but relieving everybody, 29-year-old bridal shop owner Kim Spradlin won the million-dollar prize on “Survivor One World” on Sunday, and she deserves every penny. Blue-eyed Kim wasn’t just the best-liked person out on the beach, she was the strategic mastermind who engineered the complete collapse of the game’s men, a physical powerhouse with four immunity victories to her name, and a savvy enough player to sniff out a hidden immunity idol she never even had to use. Watching the season, it didn’t take an eagle-eyed “Survivor” fan to know that Kim had all the makings of a fantastic winner. But try telling that to Kim herself. Speaking with MTV News at the “Survivor One World” finale, the pride of Salani revealed that going into the evening, she honestly didn’t think she had a chance at taking home the grand prize. “Honestly, it was just starting to feel too obvious,” Spradlin said of watching herself on television this season. “I thought there’s no way [I’m winning]. Something’s up. Something’s wrong. When you’re out there on the island, you get really paranoid, and you carry that back into your life. So I feel like I came back concerned that I wasn’t getting [the win].” But it was a different story out on the island. Kim weaved her way through numerous alliances to secure a top spot at the end of the game, leaving more than a few bitter jurors behind in her wake. Though she initially feared their wrath going into the final tribal council, she ultimately walked away from that experience feeling encouraged. “At the very end of the final tribal council was the first time where I really thought I could win this,” she said. “Up until then, I hadn’t heard the jury speak. I had no idea how mad they were going to be. And [throughout the season], they looked really mad. I didn’t think I had that great of a chance until I heard them talk.” In the end, Kim credits her win to two things. “I really wanted to keep my options open. I said that a lot on the show. If something went wrong here — if Chelsea was med-evaced one day — I’d have other options. I never wanted to put all of my eggs in one basket,” she said. “But at the same time, I wanted to be this great presence that people trusted, that felt calming, that people liked having around. I wanted people to think that I was on their side, so that they’d keep me around for them.” Her strategy worked, and now, Kim’s already being talked about as one of the all-time great “Survivor” winners. Indeed, during a commercial break at the live finale, original “Survivor” winner Richard Hatch piped up from the back of the Ed Sullivan Theater to describe Kim as one of the best players to ever play the game. That’s pretty high praise within the “Survivor” community, to say the least. “Honestly, I’m shocked,” she said of people’s reactions to her game play. “I feel like people are giving me too much credit sometimes. It just came naturally to me. And I got lucky — I think that’s a big part of this game. I’ve heard people refer to the butterfly effect out there: If someone stumbles upon a little thing, everything could end up totally differently. I think that’s very true.” Luck is a factor, true, but there’s no doubting that Kim’s inherent understanding of the game of “Survivor” fueled her victory as well. Now, with whispers of all-star seasons coming up in the future — the next season, set in the Philippines, is already slated to bring three former players back into the mix — fans are already ready to see Kim return to the beach and walk all over her competition again. The question is: Is Kim up for another round of “Survivor” action? “How do you say no to playing ‘Survivor’?” she said with a grin, before adding, “But I’m glad I’m not leaving tomorrow!” Previously in MTV News’ “Survivor” coverage:

Florence And The Machine Give Festival-Style Show At Radio City

Audience members sat on one another’s shoulders festival-style despite the ‘snazzy venue.’ By Nadeska Alexis Florence Welch Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Despite a lack of sleep, which she credited to having a very eventful stay in New York, Florence Welch still tapped into festival-level energy for her sold-out show at Radio City Music Hall on Tuesday night. In the time that’s elapsed since the release of her 2009 debut Lungs, the 25-year-old English musician, stylized with her band as Florence and the Machine , has blossomed into an international star and a world-class performer. That much was reflected in her ability to command the audience’s attention, keeping them on their feet throughout an hour-long show in a venue that afforded the option of seating. The show was live-streamed on Fuse TV, and maybe because of this, Welch performed a set that was heavy on material from her most recent LP Ceremonials, breaking only to backtrack with Lungs singles “Dog Days Are Over,” “Cosmic Love” and “Rabbit Heart.” Opening up with the new album’s intro track “Only If for a Night,” Florence got her vocals warmed up, easily hitting the rapturous notes on “What the Water Gave Me” and “All This and Heaven Too,” with her energy level steadily rising with each song. With the vibe finally established and the crowd engaged, Florence took a few extra moments to get her audience prepared for “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up),” by encouraging men in the crowd to hoist dates on their shoulders, summer festival-style, despite Radio City being “quite a snazzy venue.” It didn’t take much prompting. Immediately, girls in the crowd began to pop up on shoulders, and Welch gleefully tallied the number of fans who were happy to oblige, before launching into the song. “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)” was one of the highlights of the set, complete with an extended break allowing the audience to clap along to the percussion, while Welch skipped from one end of the stage to the next. Her sheer, billowing jumpsuit, which gave her the appearance of a fairy as she sauntered across the stage, was also mesmerizing when she stood still, arms spread, letting her vocals fill up the empty space in the auditorium on songs like “Spectrum.” Her disarming interactions with the crowd made it easy to swoon over her, and performing “Heartlines” after admitting that New York feels “more and more like home” didn’t hurt either. “Dog Days Are Over,” one of her biggest singles to date, was an obvious smash with the audience, and the encore found her delivering two final cuts from Ceremonials. “Never Let Me Go,” came with a dedication to a fan’s mother who had just passed away and “No Light, No Light” was her final number before disappearing for the night. Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse Top Fans’ Hologram Wish-Lists

Departed artists like Whitney Houston, Queen’s Freddie Mercury and John Lennon also get mentions from fans in Times Square. By Kate Callahan Michael Jackson Photo: Sony Music Entertainment NEW YORK — After the Tupac hologram performance at Coachella made such a huge splash, the team behind the projection system floated the possibility this week of an Elvis hologram to perform with Justin Bieber . Even ’90s girl group TLC is rumored to be considering a virtual version of the late Left Eye on their upcoming tour. With all that talk, MTV News hit Times Square to ask fans which departed artists they would most like to see perform in hologram form. While some of those interviewed wanted to see other rappers like the Notorious B.I.G. or Nate Dogg, one fan thought Whitney Houston should get the honors. “I love her, I grew up singing her [songs], just walking around the house when I was seven or eight,” Shayana of Houston said. Brits Amy Winehouse and John Lennon of the Beatles were also popular picks, and a few rock fans mentioned Queen’s flamboyant frontman. “It would have to be Freddie Mercury because Queen were one of the all-time greatest bands and he was a showman,” said a fan named Rob. Blane Mader would like to see a hologram of another great showman, Michael Jackson . “It’s a really clich

The Wanted: A Whirlwind Day With The Boy Band

As they release their U.S. debut, MTV News follows the Wanted to ‘Today’ before their ‘MTV First’ premiere of the ‘Chasing the Sun’ video. By Jocelyn Vena The Wanted atop the Empire State Building Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — The Wanted happen to be one of the biggest boy bands in the world at the moment. On Tuesday (April 24), the British fivesome released their self-titled U.S. EP with the kind of fanfare only a boy band could pull off as they took over the island of Manhattan for a whirlwind release-day press tour. MTV News was on hand for every minute of it, from sunrise to sunset, capturing the excitement as the boys made their way across the Big Apple to promote the album. We first met up with the guys at 5 a.m. at their hotel to make our way over to “Today.” But, we weren’t the only ones who greeted the guys there: Fans had waited all night outside the hotel to catch a glimpse of the Wanted. Despite the early hour, the guys obliged, signing autographs and smiling for photos with their devotees. Then they hopped into their car and made their way across town to “Today.” So, how do they manage to keep their spirits up at the top of a long day like that? “We prepared for this show this morning by having cups of tea and Cheerios, good for the heart,” Siva Kaneswaran told me before they took the stage to perform. “Basically, just psych each other, gaze into each other’s eyes and get excited, and that’s what gets us through the day.” From there, it was all about greeting even more fans, who had followed the guys from the studio back to their hotel, where the guys regrouped for a bit before more press and appearances. It’s the fans though who make the grueling press tour worth all the work, even if they find sneaky ways to show the guys their love. Recalling a mid-day fan encounter during their downtime, Tom Parker said some fans must have sneaked into the hotel, probably through the front door. “They were following us around. Some girl came up and said, ‘Is it too early to buy you a drink yet?’ ” The answer was “yes” — they did have a full day of press ahead of them! After their very short break, we were back in the car heading to the Empire State Building , where the guys got their photos taken and did several more interviews to hype up their release. Their final stop today will be their “MTV First,” during which they will premiere their video for “Chasing the Sun,” sit down with Sway Calloway to chat about their album and the video, and answer fans’ questions. Well, Sway, I warmed them up for you. I just hope I didn’t tire them out. The Wanted are taking over the Big Apple! Stick with MTV News for updates and exclusive behind-the-scenes photos all day. We’ll tag along with the guys on stops like the “Today” show and the Empire State Building before “MTV First: The Wanted” kicks off at 7:53 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. Then they sang not only their chart-topping track “Glad You Came” but also their new single, “Chasing the Sun.” “We’ve done two albums so we’re trying to catch people up in America,” Wanted member Tom Parker told co-host Ann Curry about the EP, their first official Stateside release. They then launched into “Glad,” clad in leather jackets and displaying their boy-band bravado. By Jocelyn Vena The Wanted rehearse before “Today” performance Photo: Brian Phares/MTV News NEW YORK — “Oh my god, they’re so normal!” one fan declared as she caught a glimpse of the Wanted leaving their hotel this morning. It was one of many exciting fan encounters the band would have on Tuesday (April 24), as they were out in New York City promoting their self-titled U.S. debut EP and the release of their new video, “Chasing the Sun.” MTV News was on hand with the guys in the early hours Tuesday while they chilled in the “Today” show green room chatting, eating breakfast and goofing around with a fat cat and a dog named Ted, both of whom were on the show today as well. “We just arrived and we saw a 40-pound cat crawling across the floor,” group member Siva Kaneswaran told MTV News about the early morning wakeup call and the show’s other guest, a cat who is currently having his own moment chasing the sun. “This is the kind of stuff that happens to the Wanted. It’s too early for this,” he continued. “There’s lots of big stuff happening today and were gonna do some crazy things.” Before they performed “Chasing” and their hit single “Glad You Came” on the morning news show, Siva explained how the guys prep for an appearance on a show like “Today.” “We prepared for this show this morning by having cups of tea and Cheerios, good for the heart,” Siva, who declared he is not a morning person, shared. “Basically, just psych each other, gaze into each other’s eyes and get excited, and that’s what gets us through the day.” The “Today” show was the first of many media appearances the Wanted will make on Tuesday, leading up to their “MTV First” airing tonight at 7:53 p.m. ET on MTV. Boyz II Men: The ‘Battle Of The Boy Bands’ Forefathers

Boyz up against longtime rivals Jodeci in round one; voting open now! By John Mitchell, with reporting by Jocelyn Vena Boyz II Men Photo: Jeff Fusco/ Getty Images Our Battle of the Boy Bands got off to a roaring start Monday as fans of new groups like the Wanted and One Direction and legacy acts like ‘NSYNC and New Kids on the Block hit our bracket hard to push their favorites on to the next round. One group that is in it to win it is Boyz II Men , who told MTV News they were among the “progenitors” of the entire boy-band genre. “We were kind of like the progenitors, the torch holders of a lot of the artists, of a lot of the boy bands that came about,” Nathan Morris told us. Highest Chart Achievement In the mid-’90s, Boyz II Men ruled the charts. That’s not hyperbole, either — three of the top-10 longest-running #1 singles in the history of the Billboard chart belong to the band. Their top song, though, is actually a duet, and with 16 weeks spent atop the chart, it’s also the biggest single ever: “One Sweet Day” with Mariah Carey. Boyz II Men are one of just four artists or groups to have held the #1 spot for at least 50 weeks cumulatively. On the all-time list, they fall at #4, behind only (ahem!) Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Carey. (With 47 weeks, Usher falls just short at #5.) Clearly, the band has quite a few chart achievements under its belt. Standout Video The Boyz made a series of great videos for their hits “End of the Road,” “I’ll Make Love to You” and “Water Runs Dry,” but for its cameos alone, “On Bended Knee” rises above. In the clip, each band member breaks up with and eventually reconciles with a girlfriend, played by four famous actresses: Victoria Rowell, Ren
