‘Knock Knock’ is up for best MTV live performance of the year — cast your vote! By Rya Backer Mac Miller performs in Chicago in October Photo: MTV Mac Miller ‘s live performance of “Knock Knock” in Chicago is a fairly good reflection of what you’re in for at one of his concerts: very little gravity, a lot of movement and fans who could easily understudy for the rapper because they know every word to every track. It’s his pumped-up, feel-good presence that puts him on the list of contenders for the Best MTV Live Performance of 2011 . And we totally understand why he made the list. Just last week, when we checked out Mac’s set at New York’s Best Buy Theater, it wasn’t so much a concert as it was a gigantic school’s-out-forever party. He proved to be a very capable MC in both the literal and hip-hop definitions, ordering the audience to have fun and delivering tracks from his EPs and LP alike with the backing of a DJ, a handful of friends and a hype man. There were many times during the nearly hour-and-a-half-long set, however, when Miller didn’t even need to perform: So dedicated is his following that there was literally not a line that wasn’t also uttered by the audience. Miller took advantage of their skills especially during “Party on Fifth Ave.,” as they traded lines during the chorus. The loyal crowd seldom stayed still, dancing and fist-pumping their way through such tracks as a guitar-heavy “Smile Back” and standouts “Donald Trump” and “Frick Park Market.” Only adding to the concert’s festive feel was the sing-along Mac performed in the middle of his set. Armed with only a Rickenbacker, Miller blazed through the choruses of such pop standards as Lynyrd Skynyrd ‘s “Sweet Home Alabama” and Biz Markie ‘s “Just a Friend.” By night’s end, the lights went up and friends high-fived, still ecstatic that they’d just seen their hero, their heavily tattooed peer who understands their obsessions and obstacles and assures them that, despite it all, everyone’s due to have a “Best Day Ever.” That performance and many others have landed Mac a spot on this year’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll . Support Miller (or your favorite rookie rapper) over on RapFix.MTV.com . MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Gangsta Gibbs’ mixtapes earned him a deal with Young Jeezy and a spot on MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough list — vote now! By Nadeska Alexis Freddie Gibbs Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News When Freddie Gibbs joined Sway on “RapFix Live” in September, the Gary, Indiana, native was firm in insisting that he would never stray from the deeply lyrical gangster rap that fans now expect from him. His recent deal with Young Jeezy ‘s CTE label bolstered his efforts and kept the spotlight on his releases this year, earning him a nomination for MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011 . Despite a fizzled deal with Interscope Records in 2007, Gibbs (born Frederick Tipton) continued his rise to lyrical prominence by dropping popular mixtapes, including 2009’s The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs and Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik . The success of those two mixtapes landed him a spot on XXL ‘s 2010 Freshman cover, but that was only the beginning for Gangsta Gibbs. The 29-year-old rapper continued his manic music run, releasing the independent EP Str8 Killa No Filla via Decon Records in 2010, and in April he made his biggest career move thus far, inking a new deal with Young Jeezy’s CTE (Corporate Thugz Entertainment). Besides teaming up with the Snowman on singles like “Run DMC” and “Do It for You,” Gibbs put in some extra time in the lab, turning out his mixtape Cold Day in Hell in October. The project showcased his growth, with standout cuts including “Anything to Survive” and “Menace II Society” and a slew of guest features from Freeway, Jeezy, Juicy J and 2 Chainz. Major label or not, don’t expect Gibbs to soften the content of his material anytime soon. “I wanna be taboo. I want your parents to not want my music in your iPod,” Gibbs told MTV News. “I want your mom to be scared of what I’m talking about because it’s so real.” His fellow contenders for Hottest Breakthrough MC should probably be scared too. Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established by MTV News in 2010 as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang General beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. This year, you can vote for Machine Gun Kelly (or your favorite up-and-comer) over at RapFix.MTV.com , and be sure to check back for daily updates and poll results. Each day, we’ll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude on December 13 when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during December 14’s “RapFix Live,” during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement about MTV News’ upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list and debate. To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won’t be part of this conversation. Jeezy tells ‘RapFix Live’ the whole thing started because he couldn’t perform with Gucc while recovering from throat surgery. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Young Jeezy Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News It was all just a misunderstanding. After Young Jeezy appeared on Gucci Mane ‘s 2005 track “Icy” but later refused to perform the record with Gucc, things between the two rappers got tense. When the Snowman appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” he revealed that what Gucci Mane didn’t know was it was Jeezy’s secret throat surgery that kept him from performing the record. “When I met homey, he was just a guy hanging at the studio and he was fan. And I took to him and ’cause I just liked the way he got down, he was always cool, he was always excited,” Jeezy said of how he and Gucci first met. Jeezy — who was the hottest street rapper at the time — agreed to do “Icy” with Gucci Mane and even helped put the record together, he said. But soon after, he lost his voice, so when a request to perform the song came through to Jeezy’s people, he declined without giving a reason. “Around that time is when I lost my voice,” Jeezy revealed to Sway. “But nobody knew that I lost my voice but, like, maybe four of my homeboys. Def Jam didn’t know, nobody knew. “I think they got offended, but he didn’t know that I lost my voice and just had surgery and was laying on a deathbed not knowing whether or not I would be able to speak again.” It is important to note that the two MCs have since called a truce . But before they made a peaceful resolution, Jeezy and Gucci traded subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle barbs on record. The drama even spilled onto the streets . “It just started then and turned into something else,” Jeezy said. “I just felt like he was getting disrespectful about the situation because he wasn’t being a businessman about it and understanding.” Jeezy, who is set to drop his fourth album, TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition, on December 20, told Sway that he believed the media made it out to be more than it was. “It’s over now. But for what it’s worth, it was nothing,” he said. In August, Gucci Mane had a similar stance when he sat with Sway on “RapFix Live.” “On the strength of [the fact that] anything could have happened between not just me and him [but] between our camps, we just came to a sit-down of just respecting the fact that somebody can get hurt, and it ain’t going to be us,” Gucci said of the truce. “That’s what made us do that.” Don’t expect a future collaboration between the former foes, however. “I think we should just stay away from that totally,” Jeezy said. Are you glad Jeezy and Gucci settled things? Let us know in the comments. Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Young Jeezy And Big K.R.I.T. Related Artists Young Jeezy Gucci Mane
