Lil Wayne’s ‘Unplugged’: Old Hits And A Soon-To-Be Smash

Weezy debuts Tha Carter IV track ‘Nightmares of the Bottom’ during Sunday’s special. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne at his “Unplugged” performance Photo: Frank Micelotta/MTV/PictureGroup LL Cool J, Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill and now Lil Wayne . On Sunday (June 12), Weezy joined MTV’s “Unplugged” hip-hop ranks with a most energetic performance. Birdman Jr. took the stage wearing a black sweatshirt, black sunglasses and a red fitted baseball cap with a white button attached that read “Tunechi.” Backed by a full band, Wayne launched into his 2008 album cut “3 Peat” and then stopped to address the full-throated crowd. “If you got your Carter III album, make some noise,” Wayne said of his highly regarded record. From there, the New Orleans rapper jumped into spirited renditions of “Mr. Carter” from TCIII and then “Shoot Me Down.” Wayne, who was released from his eight-month prison bid last November, segued into his portion of Drake’s “Miss Me” with a heartfelt speech. “A few months ago, I was locked up and stuff,” Wayne began. “And it was people like y’all that made me feel like I wasn’t even there, so I really appreciate it.” After warming up, Weezy F. took off his sweatshirt, leaving on a white tee, then turned the heat up with an animated “A Milli” performance. With the energy steadily building, the Young Money CEO went into “Fireman” from Tha Carter II and then treated fans to something special: a cover of Tupac’s “Hail Mary.” Wayne focused particularly on ‘Pac’s second verse: “Penitentiaries is packed with promise makers, never realize the precious time that bitch n—as is wastin’,” he rapped to the crowd’s delight. Aside from the rap hits he is known for, Lil Tunechi visited his rocked-out Rebirth album and performed a spirited version of “Drop the World.” As Wayne delivered the song’s opening line, “I got ice in my veins, blood in my eyes,” he removed his shades to reveal his eyes and his emotion. From rock to pop, the self-proclaimed Best Rapper Alive mashed up his latest single, “How to Love,” with his 2009 #1 smash record “Lollipop.” The MC took the crowd to musical heights as he ran through his catalog of hits. One highlight in particular is when Wayne debuted “Nightmares of the Bottom,” a new track from his highly anticipated and oft-delayed Tha Carter IV album. The song, which details Wayne’s rise to the top and unwillingness to fail, was an immediate fan favorite as he rapped lines like “Don’t call me sir, call me survivor” and “Weezy F. Baby, and the ‘F’ ain’t for fear.” As the performance drew to a close, Wayne took off his shirt and let his hair loose before his band drummed up the beat to his Harry Belafonte-sampling cut “6 Foot, 7 Foot.” A loosened-up Weezy rapped each lyric with conviction before he brought out his Young Money signee Cory Gunz to deliver the track’s rapid-fire third and final verse. Cory quickly exited the stage, and in the end, Lil Wayne stood triumphant while the crowd applauded ferociously. Young Moola, baby! Lil Wayne Swears Off One-Hit Wonders In Young Money

At the taping of his ‘Unplugged,’ the YM boss explains his strategies for Lil Twist, Cory Gunz and Shanell. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wanyne Photo: MTV News Through the years, Lil Wayne developed as an artist. The one-time neophyte of Cash Money records has grown from a slick-talking corn-rolled kid to the multi-platinum face of the label. Now, 12 years after releasing his 1999 solo debut, Wayne heads his own Young Money label, and as he explained to Sway after taping his “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” he’s serious about the careful artistic development of all of his signees. “I’m not gonna shove him in your face right now and make him a one-hit wonder,” Wayne said of his “6 Foot, 7 Foot” collaborator Cory Gunz . “He’s nowhere near ready. He’s gonna do this the way artists should do it, the way Drake did it. “I’m not gonna make a one-hit wonder,” Wayne repeated emphatically. “That’s not what I do.” Lil Twist, who is currently finding increasing success with his latest single, “Love Affair,” will not be a flash in the pan either, according to Weezy. “Twist is ready. Twist is a well-developed artist, and it’s about to be Twist’s turn.” The 18-year-old Dallas rapper joined the Young Money fold as a minor, but rather than have him go for the usually successful, cutesy route, Wayne chose to wait. “That’s why I didn’t shove Twist in nobody’s face. I could’ve been like, ‘This is our young artist’; the young, cute little artist of the label with all the adults,” he said. “I could’ve did that, but no, we’re gonna do this right. I didn’t want to put him out and have him as a kid star, and sometimes you don’t know what to do after that. So now he’s 18, he’s a teenager, and I don’t even have to look at the kid-star thing.” Young Money plans to release Twist’s debut album Don’t Get It Twisted later this year. Wayne expresses a similar amount of confidence in his alternative R&B female artist Shanell. “Shannell is past ready. Actually she came into the game ready,” Wayne said beaming with pride. “That was no developing; that’s a superstar, that’s a very talented woman. It’s just that you have to properly handle her situation the right way, ’cause you don’t want nobody to miss the point, and the point is, that is a very talented woman, and that’s what I want everybody to see.” Don’t miss “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” premiering Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV2, MTV and MTV.com. Lil Wayne’s ‘MTV Unplugged’ A Solo Gig

‘MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged’ airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne Photo: Frank Micelotta/MTV/PictureGroup During his MTV2 “Unplugged” special, Lil Wayne aims to give fans his all, so don’t expect him to share the stage with any guests. “If you ever go to a Lil Wayne show, you’ll see he, as in I, don’t bring nobody onstage unless they are Young Money,” Weezy told MTV News’ Sway Calloway after the taping of “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” which will air on MTV2, MTV and MTV.com on Sunday. “If they are not Young Money and they are just an artist that I’ve done a song with and they’re in the town that night and they ask, ‘Can I come out?’ Say, ‘Yeah,’ ” he said. “But if you go to a Lil Wayne show and you’re a real Lil Wayne fan, you’ll know: He’s up there from start to finish by his self.” Part of Weezy’s hesitation to bring others onstage dates back to his early days as one-fourth of the Hot Boys with Juvenile, B.G. and Turk. “Ain’t have nobody screamin’ over the mic with me. I just never been about that because I was always in a group with three other guys when I was comin’ up,” Tunechi said. For all of the reasons he gives, in the end, Wayne is just a little bit selfish, and after releasing eight solo albums, nine official mixtapes and selling more than 10 million copies, who can blame him? “I also don’t bring a lot of people up there because, simple and plain, this is ‘MTV Unplugged,’ and this is Lil Wayne’s ‘MTV Unplugged,’ ” he said. I been with him since he was seven years old, eight years old. I been in his life all of his life, and he was like, ‘Let me handle, it.’ At the time, me as an artist, losing my sister and everything I was going through personally, I was just like, ‘Go ahead, I’ma just support what you gon’ do.
