Lil Wayne Talks Signing Drake And Nicki Minaj

Wayne’s ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’ video premieres Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne and Sway Photo: MTV News A Lil Wayne verse can make an already good song even better, as evidenced by his monstrous 16 bars on DJ Khaled’s “We Takin’ Over.” And when Wayne was putting together the roster for his then-burgeoning Young Money empire, he knew he needed someone who could take his company to the next level in the same manner. Enter Drake . “The first thing I said was this kid’s a superstar,” Weezy told MTV News about his introduction to Drizzy. “I don’t think you can remember, but I did some interviews back then when they were asking me about him and I said he’s better than me. I can’t sing. I can make a song, but this kid has the actual R&B presence. Then he’s one of the dopest lyricists. That right there, he has a welcoming appearance. I knew he was something bigger than something I had envisioned for my company when I ran into this kid. I was thinking I’m going to put my people on and we’re going to be all right, but then when I ran into this kid, I was like, this a superstar, he’s got a chance to make my company something for real, something to be thought of, to be remembered.” Since that time, of course, Drake has skyrocketed to the top with a standout mixtape, So Far Gone, and a successful debut album, Thank Me Later . What Lil Wayne didn’t know at the time he assembled the YM crew, however, was that he’d have two franchise stars, the second being Nicki Minaj , who also ascended to superstardom in her own right. As a result of signing both rappers, Wayne has managed to turn himself into a mogul on par with Diddy, Jay-Z and his boss, Cash Money’s Birdman. “I can’t front, I just thought she was going to be the new female MC that none of these other female MCs can touch,” Wayne said about Nicki. “But now, she’s blossomed into a megastar with this new attitude and this style. Now when I talk to her, I just tell her, ‘Do what you do, baby.’ I used to be able to go into the studio and say, ‘Nah, don’t say that, don’t say that.’ You know, ‘That was better.’ Now, do what you do, baby. I don’t have a clue about what you’re doing right now, but it’s working, do it.” Related Videos Lil Wayne Ready To Drop ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’ Related Artists Lil Wayne Nicki Minaj Drake

Nicki Minaj’s ‘Moment 4 Life’ Video: Top 4 Moments

Drake and Barbie take their flirtation to a new level in clip, with a kiss. By Jayson Rodriguez Nicki Minaj and Drake in “Moment 4 Life” Photo: Young Money / Universal When Drake met Nicki Minaj a few years ago on Lil Wayne’s tour bus , hearts filled his eyes — or did they? The two have been coy about their relationship, alternating between describing their union as a brother/sister bond and romantically inclined. They announced their marriage last year on Twitter only to annul everything days later as a joke . Now, the pair star opposite each other in Nicki’s new video, “Moment 4 Life.” Did they finally put their flirtation to bed? Not quite: The Young Money soldiers managed to stoke the flames even more, with their gazes into each other’s eyes and a lip-lock that would make Morganna Roberts blush. Here, MTV News recaps the top four moments in “Moment 4 Life.” Black Magic Clearly Nicki Minaj is in the midst of a moment. Her debut, Pink Friday , continues to sell well, and she recently returned from overseas, where she caused her British Barbies to lose it. To make sure her success lasts longer, however, the Young Money maven enlists the help of a fairy godmother, yet another alter ego of hers, Martha, to make the moment longer than Weezy’s dreads. Leading Man Drizzy channels his inner Marcus Graham (check the “Boomerang”credits on IMDb) in the clip as he overlooks the party in full-on mack mode from the balcony with a martini in hand. The Toronto lyricist spots his fellow Lil Wayne prot

Nicki Minaj To Take Questions Live After ‘Moment 4 Life’ Video Debut!

New clip, featuring Drake, premieres Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj Photo: Bertrand Langlois/AFP/Getty Images It’s your moment, Barbz! Nicki Minaj will debut her “Moment 4 Life” video Thursday on MTV at 7:54 p.m. ET, and the Young Money megastar will answer questions live immediately following the premiere. Minaj will sit down with MTV News’ Sway and field questions from her Barbie army in an interview that will be broadcast on MTV, followed by a live stream on MTV.com. For a chance to hear the Queens lyricist’s thoughts, tweet your questions with the hashtag #asknicki . You can also upload video questions to Your.MTV.com . MTV News stopped by the Los Angeles video set and scored footage of Minaj filming in a palatial mansion alongside Drake — with whom she’s rumored to smooch in the clip. Rocking a draped aqua gown with a chunky jewel-encrusted bodice, a sparkly headpiece set atop a jet-black wig, and, of course, bubblegum-pink nails and lipstick, Minaj strolls into the expansive manor. Sporting an all-black ensemble, Drake clutches a martini as he looks over the balcony at his Young Money cohort. “To do something with Drake is the best, because this is really my friend,” Minaj told MTV News on set. The platinum-selling star added that she’s making the visual extra-special since she’s got Drizzy along for the ride. “So we put a couple things in there that we’re not gonna give away.” Drake also spoke to us about Minaj’s meteoric rise, recalling their humble beginnings as buzzy Lil Wayne signees trekking around the country with their Young Money family on tour. “To think of the girl that I used to ride the bus with — and that’s what she was to me: this girl that I rode the bus with,” he said. “I was like, ‘Female rap?’ And I’m being dead honest with you. [I thought,] ‘Man, it’s been a while since there’s been a female rapper, and I’m curious to see how this works.’ It’s not that I didn’t believe. And she was probably looking at me like, ‘This Jew from Canada: I don’t know.’ ” Don’t miss the premiere of Nicki Minaj ‘s “Moment 4 Life” video, featuring Drake, Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV., followed by a live interview with the Young Money femcee that will continue on MTV.com. Drake’s Next Act, Lil Wayne’s Return, More Hip-Hop Stories To Watch

Mixtape Daily gears up for post-prison music from T.I. and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, along with more from Young Money/ Cash Money. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Skip Bolen/ Getty Images Arrests and court cases dominated the hip-hop headlines last year, but with Lil Wayne free and a host of new stars ready to take the next step, 2011 should bring some better days . Drake is expected to drop Take Care, the follow-up to his debut, and the entire Young Money/ Cash Money crew has their sights set on world domination (can we also get a world tour?). There are still some MCs behind bars, but T.I. and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy will be out soon, and hopefully acts like Young Jeezy, 50 Cent and Nas can rebound from rap purgatory with projects worthy of their talents. Here, Mixtape Daily presents part two in our preview of stories to follow in the new year. Drake’s Second Date The breakout star of 2010 is working on the follow-up to his debut, Thank Me Later : the gentlemanly titled Take Care. He’s promised bigger records for his sophomore set, and so far, he’s been in the studio with Justin Timberlake and the Neptunes, among others, to prove his point. His much-hyped R&B mixtape, It’s Never Enough, is on hold at the moment as Drizzy takes his act international during his current jaunt across the Atlantic with J. Cole. When the pair of projects arrive, however, expect Drake-mania to ratchet up all over again. Freed MCs The past 12 months weren’t kind to T.I. After being released from a halfway house in March, the beloved Atlanta MC returned to work, but the reception to his solo material was tepid. He scored knockouts with his guest verses on Drake’s and Rick Ross’ albums, but by the time he released his retooled (and rushed) No Mercy LP, he was back behind bars after a parole violation . We’re hoping Tip rebounds like Blake Griffin when he completes his 11-month prison term. Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, meanwhile, is scheduled to finish his jail sentence this year as well. The New York MC was embarking on a rejuvenated solo career when he was arrested on gun-possession charges. We’ll be saluting him when he touches back down. Rebounding Rappers Without a doubt, Young Jeezy is one of the best out, but the trap star has had a harder time than usual getting his latest album, the long-delayed Thug Motivation 103, out the gate due to the slow response to his single choices. Likewise, a motivated 50 Cent, who has been busy milking millions of dollars out of Hollywood lately, is set to come back with a new album, the follow-up to Before I Self-Destruct, the superstar’s first LP to fall short of the platinum-selling mark. Fellow Queens native Nas may have expanded his fanbase with his collaborative effort with Damian Marley, but fans are looking for the Distant Relatives MC to return to Nasty Nas form on his forthcoming effort, due later this year. Weezy’s World There’s Lil Wayne’s next album, and then there’s everybody else’s projects. Apologies to Jay-Z and Kanye West, but even their royal collaborative LP, Watch the Thrown, has to bow down to Tha Carter IV as the most-anticipated hip-hop album of the year. The frenetic MC was behind bars for 10 months in 2010 and has kept a low profile since he was released in November. Weezy’s rollicking “6 Foot 7 Foot” is a sign of things to come. Excuse his charisma, but we’re rocking with the Cash Money King in 2011. Young Money/ Cash Money Takeover Nicki Minaj is still in full promotional mode for Pink Friday, with videos on the way for her Drake-assisted “Moment 4 Life” and “Fly” featuring Rihanna. Then there’s Drizzy’s pair of projects, his R&B mixtape and Take Care. Lil Wayne is back (!!!) and putting the final touches on Tha Carter IV. The next generation of YM heavy hitters are on deck: Tyga, Lil Twist and Cory Gunz are all expected to drop their debuts albums. New Cash Money acquisition DJ Khaled is also readying his first project for the house that Baby and Slim built. Then there’s the rumored YMCMB tour that would place the revamped crew alongside Bad Boy, Death Row, No Limit, Rough Ryders and Roc-A-Fella as one of the premiere collectives in hip-hop history. Mixtape Daily will be back on the daily grind beginning Tuesday, January 18, with our first Main Pick of the new year, Rick Ross’ Ashes to Ashes. Are Kanye And Jay-Z Delivering Watch The Throne Too Soon?

Critics weigh in on whether ‘Ye risks fans gorging on product while they’re still feasting on acclaimed Dark Twisted Fantasy. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ WireImage Kanye West should be basking in the critical acclaim of his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. He scored a number of year-end accolades for the project, including recognition from us here at MTV News. But a mere two months after the LP’s November release, the rapper’s already in promotional mode for his next project, Watch the Throne, a joint effort with Jay-Z . How did everything happen so fast? Jay-Z, of course, has been a prolific MC, having released six consecutive #1 albums, from 1998’s Vol. 2 … Hard Knock Life to 2003’s The Black Album. And after a self-imposed exile, Kanye has proved to be just as productive as his mentor, including West’s three-month-long G.O.O.D. Fridays series, during which he released a new single each week. Back in October, during a lengthy sit-down, West casually told MTV News’ Sway that the Watch the Throne EP had evolved into a full-length album. “We putting out a whole album now,” he said. “We had done five [songs] so far, but then a few of them kind of were out there, and I put them on my album. Sorry, Jay. But we got some more, and we’re going to the South of France at the end of the month to just record new ideas. But we’ll probably be done with the album in a day.” According to ‘Ye, Jay-Z only has to write 10 verses (a hint?: the album will only be 10 songs), and West is collaborating with a bevy of producers, so his load will be substantially reduced as well. Another question, however, is whether fans will flock to the project so soon after snapping up West’s extravagant solo release. The early answer seems to be a resounding yes. “I think it’s smart because I imagine the two albums will be very different sonically, so it won’t be a case where one overshadows the other,” Complex senior editor Toshitaka Kondo told MTV News. “Also, when an artist is hot, their fans can’t get enough as long as the output is good. Young Money has had five or six different releases, including the Young Money album and projects from Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Drake in the last 13 months, and I can’t see how it’s hurt any of them. I can’t see the sales of this album necessarily cannibalizing the sales from Kanye’s [last album] anyway. It’d be one thing if they were dropping within a few weeks of each other, but given how fast people consume music these days, six months is plenty of time.” Perhaps, though, instead of debating whether it’s too soon to put out the album, the more poignant thing to consider is this: arguably the two biggest stars in hip-hop want to make an album together ! “All artists need to find a way to combat falling record sales and meet fans’ desire for constant gratification — a new album from two of hip-hop’s biggest stars isn’t going to hurt,” the Amplifier ‘s Caryn Ganz said. “It could even renew interest in Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and encourage people to revisit it,” she said. “All the recent collaborations between these two have been very strong, like ‘Run This Town’ and ‘Monster,’ and Kanye seems to bring out a fascinating artiness in Jay. They just have to be careful that they don’t push it too far in an artsy, esoteric direction and lose their whole street base. But the timing doesn’t seem strange to me at all — strike while Kanye’s still making headlines for the right reasons, rather than wrong.” Do you think it’s too soon for Kanye and Jay to drop their Watch the Throne ? Drake Calls Nicki Minaj’s Breakout Year ‘Incredible’

‘It’s amazing now to see her come into her own,’ he tells MTV News on set of ‘Moment 4 Life’ video. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News The Young Money triumvirate of Lil Wayne , Drake and Nicki Minaj had a banner year filled with successful albums, buzzed about moments onstage and chart-toppers. Drake compared the success of his and Minaj’s debuts with Weezy’s opening-week sales of Tha Carter III , saying each subsequent project further cemented the collective’s status. “I think it’s crazy that somehow, some higher power brought all these individuals together,” Drake told MTV News on the set of Minaj’s “Moment 4 Life” video. “I remember being on the [tour] bus when Wayne played me Tha Carter III , which went on to sell a million copies in one week. Then it was Thank Me Later . It was this big pressure, and that went on to sell what it did. “And now,” he continued, “to think of the girl that I used to ride the bus with — and that’s what she was to me: this girl that I rode the bus with. I was like, ‘Female rap?’ And I’m being dead honest with you.
