B.o.B, Soulja Boy Tell’em, N.E.R.D, More Rock BET Awards Pre-Show

Drake, T.I., Nicki Minaj chat on the red carpet before main show. By Hillary Crosley N.E.R.D. at the 2010 BET Awards Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Before the 10th annual BET Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night (June 27), N.E.R.D kicked off a pre-show by performing “Hot and Fun” on a Murakami-inspired flatbed truck, surrounded by fans. Afterward, the guys chatted with “106 & Park” hosts Rocsi and Terrence J about their most anticipated show performances. “I got to see my man ‘Ye do it,” Pharrell said of Kanye West’s opening performance at the main show. “It’s gonna be hot.” Atlanta MC B.o.B followed, rocking his hit “Nothin’ on You,” featuring a new singer, Rico Barrino, filling in for Bruno Mars. Barrino, who is the brother of “American Idol” winner Fantasia, recently joined B.o.B as an artist on T.I.’s Grand Hustle record label, and their performance served as the singer’s introduction. T.I. came out to chat with B.o.B and Barrino following their performance. “This is my first time actually attending and being nominated three times,” B.o.B said. “I feel like three [nominations are] a charm.” “I’m looking forward to the surprise performances,” T.I. added, donning a blue suit with a matching tie. “[B.o.B] don’t even know yet, but I hooked it up. I got you performing on the big stage. So I’m looking forward to that performance, and it’s going to be a collaboration that the world ain’t ready for.” In a nod to “Glee,” the Crenshaw High Elite choir sang renditions of each of the Viewer’s Choice Award nominees a capella, including Beyonc

Drake Spits A Freestyle In Exclusive ‘Better Than Good Enough’ Outtake

Drizzy rips a verse about fines wines and fake women during a visit to New Orleans radio station. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: MTV News A 20-something rap phenom with an eye for the finer things, Drake is finding that when it comes to the ladies, not all of them share his Champagne taste. In an exclusive outtake from the documentary “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” the Young Money MC visits New Orleans radio station Q 93.3, where he spits a freestyle, going in about everything from finances to females. “Why has every woman never dined here before?/ Am I the only 23-year-old wine connoisseur?” Drizzy wonders, as the room erupts with rowdy howls co-signing the hip-hop star’s rhyming skills. The full-length doc depicts the months before Drake dropped his hotly anticipated debut, Thank Me Later. But the freestyle sequence showcases one of the qualities that has made Drake a breakout star: his charismatic, hyper-informed flow. The outtake also captures the heightened buzz that preceded his first major-label offering, as the radio DJ coaxes the star into giving “a preview” of the kinds of bars to come on Later. Ready to flex his lyrical chops, the scene opens with Drizzy animatedly accepting the challenge. A focused Drake even refuses an instrumental (“No beat,” he star insists), spitting a verse a capella. “Please make your long story shorter/ Time is of the essence for the king of second quarter/ Numbers do the talking/ I have nothing for reporters/ I just hope we make these flights and don’t get held up at the border,” Drake spits. The verse demonstrates his trademark verbal agility (“Jumpin’ to the top/ This my leap year”); his witty humor (“I got new girls / But none of they love is for certain/ And call old girls/ But none of they numbers are workin’); and his easy candor (“They ain’t rootin’ for me/ They ain’t clappin’ for me/ I’m only saying can somebody just be happy for me?”). As the station dissolve into hollers of approval, Drake’s Young Money associate Mack Maine tosses out a challenge to any rappers ready to step to the Toronto MC. “I got a mil’ on Drake!” Maine shouts gleefully. “Against any of y’all! — old school, new school, need to know this!” MTV followed Drake in the weeks leading up to the release of his new LP, Thank Me Later. The “Drake: Better Than Good Enough” documentary will re-air on MTV Saturday at 12 p.m. and 9 p.m., Sunday at 9 a.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. on MTV2. Birdman, Lil Wayne And Tyga Rep Their Hometowns In ‘Loyalty’ Video

Drake and Mack Maine also make cameos in new clip. By Jayson Rodriguez Birdman and Lil Wayne in “Loyalty” Photo: Cash Money The Birdman premiered his latest video, for “Loyalty,” on MTV.com, and in the clip, the Cash Money Records co-CEO kicks his boastful rhymes alongside Lil Wayne and Tyga. The video is the first offering from Birdman’s next album, Bigger Than Life, tentatively scheduled for fall release. In the clip, the three rappers appear in front of digitized backdrops featuring Tyga’s native Los Angeles and Birdman and Wayne’s New Orleans along with their adopted city, Miami. “I got the tax on the bubble/ The money in the Hummer,” Birdman rhymes. “We shined every summer/ So we swagged out/ Gucci down/ Louis down/ Put it down/ Uptown.” Young Money familia Drake and Mack Maine also make cameos in the clip. The video was filmed during Wayne’s feverish pre-prison shooting schedule , when he shot clips for his own projects, as well as for Young Money, Drake and Birdman. Bigger Than Life is slated to feature collaborations with Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Bun B and Drake, in addition to Wayne and Tyga. The set is the follow-up to 2009’s Pricele$$, which spawned his breakout “Money to Blow,” featuring Lil Wayne and Drake. In addition to prepping his album, Birdman is also putting the final touches on a mixtape titled The Godfather ; a DVD project of the same name is in the works with DJ Scoob Doo . “The Godfather” DVD, similar to Lil Wayne’s “Nino Brown Story” series, will showcase behind-the-scenes footage of the making of Birdman’s album and his day-to-day presence operating Cash Money Records. Drake Says He And Lil Wayne Are Planning A Joint Album

‘I went up to Rikers, and me and Wayne agreed that there will be a Lil Wayne/ Drake album,’ he tells MTV’s ‘Sucker Free.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: the305.com A Young Angel and Young Lion LP? It’s finally in the works, according to Drake. The Toronto MC said he and Lil Wayne spoke about a joint album when he visited the incarcerated star last week in prison. “I went up to Rikers, and me and Wayne agreed that there will be a Lil Wayne/ Drake album,” Drake told DJ Envy on MTV’s “Sucker Free.” ” … There’s some things I’m excited for in my life — I’m excited to go perform certain places — but [this project] will probably be one of the most exciting things in my life, because we make music on a different level. It’s just so fun, so comfortable. A whole album? To think about all the things we can do, especially if we’re gonna do 15 songs. Me and him don’t like to do 12, 13 [songs]. We want to do 15, 16. Yeah, Lil Wayne and Drake album.” Wayne is only featured once on Drake’s debut album, Thank Me Later, which drops June 15. The Cash Money superstar and Drizzy collaborated on a number of projects in the past, including Drake’s mixtapes Comeback Season and So Far Gone, in addition to the Young Money compilation released last year. But this will be the first time the two MCs pair up for their own project. Last year, while on the verge of inking his deal, Drake told MTV News about his career ambitions and said Lil Wayne would be a part of them for a long time. “I plan to work with Wayne for the rest of my career, so I think it’s a smart career move,” he said. “You know, everybody else [on Young Money] will hopefully work out the situations, get the right people on the album. I think it was important for me to show him that I believed in him as much as he believed in me. Because a lot of months, he stuck his neck out there for me, you know with the VMAs [where Lil Wayne rapped Drake’s verse from ‘Money to Blow’ at the beginning of his performance of ‘Misunderstood’] and then ‘Ransom,’ and all the songs that we put out. And the things he would say in interviews, he really put himself out there for me. So I think it was only just and fair to show him that I feel the same way.” For more Drake, check him out with DJ Envy on the road for Sucker Free Summer at Hartford, Connecticut’s Hot Jam 9 this Sunday at noon on MTV2. Rick Ross’ Albert Anastasia Is ‘Strictly For Teflon Don Lovers’

Mixtape is composed of ‘completely new music, new beats’ Ross says, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: Akshay Bhansali The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Big up to the homey, video director Spiff TV (Waka Flocka Flame’s “O Let’s Do It” remix and a slew of Rick Ross clips including “Rich Off Cocaine”). His close friend and manager Rick Ross may be doing huge-budgeted mini-movies with the likes of Diddy and director F. Gary Gray , but the Miami Bawse promises that he’ll never stop doing the straight-to-the-Net videos Spiff directed — videos that his fans have grown to love over the past couple of years. “Of course, man. You know we’ll never stop releasing those black-and-whites, those virals,” Ross explained. “We’re actually editing a slew of them right now. So get ready. … That’s just another way we bring [the music] to life. We add color to the situation. We really love to be a part of the music and the history.” “When I hear a dope Busta Rhymes record, I feel like that’s a part of history, and I want to be a part of that,” he added about his rampage of creating unofficial remixes by adding verses to singles like Drake’s “Find Your Love,” Rocko’s “Maybe” and Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat.” “I want to be a part of that music. I want to put a verse on that. I don’t look at it as every record I jump on or every record I do for someone as necessarily more shine. It’s not necessarily the case. It’s always being a part of that moment in time.” Thursday (May 27) is a huge moment in time as T.I. is slated to drop his F— a Mixtape and Ross is putting out his Albert Anastasia EP. Both are mixtapes and both are free for fans. Another thing both tapes have in common is that they are composed strictly of new music. “Of course not,” Ross answered about whether or not we would hear some of those unofficial remixes on the tape. “You mentioned ‘Window Seat.’ Shout out to the beautiful Erykah Badu, we got some things we’re working on too. But this new mixtape we’re releasing right before Memorial weekend, it’s gonna be completely new music, new beats. Dope street ideas. It’s strictly for the Teflon Don lovers. It’s strictly for everyone that’s excited for [the album’s release date] July 6.” One new track that also won’t make the cut for the Double A EP is the “Teflon Don Freestyle.” He’s not saving it for the album either. It’s just out there. “Nah, that ain’t gonna be on the album,” he said. “I got stuff that’s much more potent than that. It’s crazy the way I love that ‘Teflon Don’ freestyle. But it’s like, when I started writing it, it had the potential to be big. When I finished it, compared to other bodies of work, it wasn’t even worth me putting a chorus on it. I love it, and I feel that’s a part of my mixtape arrogance. It’s like it’s a gift. I know it’s dope and I know it would be a single on other albums. But this ain’t even gonna make the mixtape. Just for online. This is just for MTV, this is for the bloggers, this just for the people who can’t wait.” Albert Anastasia EP Track Listing According To The Maybach Music Group 1. Diddy Intro (produced by Infamous) 2. MC Hammer (produced by Lex Luger) 3. Blowin’ Money Fast (B.M.F.) (featuring Styles P, produced by Lex Luger) 4. Money Maker (produced by Boi-1da) 5. Lil Wayne And Shanell’s ‘Runnin’ ‘ Video — Check Out A Preview!

That clip, plus three other brand-new ones, will premiere during MTV Jams’ Lil Tunechi Weekend. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne in his video for “Runnin’ ” Photo: Young Money/Cash Money Lil Tunechi Weekend: ‘Runnin’ ‘ (Featuring Shanell) As the countdown continues to Lil Tunechi Weekend on MTV Jams and MTV2, our latest Lil Wayne video preview is a little different than the first two clips, “Da Da Da” and “Knockout.” The “Runnin’ ” video, with Young Money bombshell Shanell , finds Wayne void of his jovial mood and more reflective and serious. “The loser, microphone abuser,” Wayne raps in front of a TV screen that plays stock footage of turmoil across the world, including people starving in the streets and scenes of war and protest. “Feet hurtin’, I just walked from Jerusalem/ So you should get on the side with the movement/ I’m the proof, and I’ll die just to prove it/ Whatcha wanna know? Anything, whatever/ I can’t tell ya, I can show ya better/ Me and my gun, we took an oath together/ Said I will never die if we both together.” The record has the feel of a true duet as Shanell sings, “Somebody tell me when’s it gonna end/ Where’s it gonna end up?” She also has her own performance segment in the video to coincide with her verse. “I lost all my money/ I lost half my mind/ Can’t find my direction/ Where’s the finish line?” she sings. Earlier this month, while talking to Mixtape Daily, the YM songstress said Weezy’s camp is proud to play their part to keep his music in the spotlight. “With Wayne being away right now, there’s some people that wanna see you fail,” Shanell explained. “I’m so happy that Wayne put this team of people together so that we could support him when the tables turn. Not really turn, but he can pass the baton.” This weekend, MTV Jams will also be debuting “Knockout” (featuring Nicki Minaj), “Get a Life” and “Da Da Da.” Which of the four new Wayne videos are you most excited to see this weekend? Diddy Says Nicki Minaj Is ‘One Of The Great Ones’

‘Nicki is up there. Her story has just begun,’ the mogul says of managing the Young Money MC. By Jayson Rodriguez Diddy Photo: MTV News Diddy is expanding his empire. The mogul recently announced the opening of a management firm that he’ll oversee in addition to his existing business holdings, which include a restaurant, clothing line and, of course, Bad Boy Records. Rick Ross was the first to ink with Diddy , describing the knowledge Diddy has as “priceless.” And now, Nicki Minaj is finalizing the paperwork that will allow the Last Train to Paris superstar to guide her career. The Young Money femcee has already been in the studio with Diddy, and he’s been singing her praises. “Nicki Minaj, she’s definitely one of the great ones,” Diddy told MTV News, speaking publicly for the first time about his new signee. “She has a long way to go, but you know how we recognized LeBron [James] was a great one, Tiger [Woods] was a great one, and Kobe [Bryant] was a great one? Nicki is up there. Her story has just begun.” So far, Nicki Minaj has released only one single, the Sean Garrett-assisted “Massive Attack,” which boasts a Hype Williams-directed video. But she’s been prominently featured on a slew of other artist’s records, including Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad,” Robin Thicke’s “Shakin’ It 4 Daddy” and Mariah Carey’s “Up Out My Face.” In February, the Queens lyricist spoke with MTV News and said she’s in no rush to release her yet-untitled debut. “With the album, just like with my mixtape, I never like to rush it,” Minaj explained. “With the album, I think it’s more important that people get accustomed to seeing a female rapper again. Before I drop an album, people need to come out and see. People don’t even know what a female rapper does. We’re so not used to seeing it. “It’s nonexistent in categories. We don’t get nominated. I need to work [the people] up to accepting a female rapper again and accepting my style and all of that — then the album will come. Honestly, I’d love to put an album out this year, but I don’t believe in rushing things either. We’ll see.” Do you think Diddy will do a good job of managing artists like Nicki Minaj? Drake Reps H-Town ‘Till The Day I Die’ On Away From Home Tour

The Toronto MC brings out Houston rap luminaries Bun B, Lil Keke, Trae Tha Truth and others. By Cynithia Allen Drake (file) Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Drake did the Texas two-step this week, bringing his Away From Home Tour to Dallas on Wednesday, and the next day, to Houston, where he closed out his initial run of U.S. dates. The 23-year-old Toronto MC’s show was highly anticipated in H-Town, a city Drake gave props to on “November 18th,” off the Chopped N Screwed version of his So Far Gone mixtape. He opened Thursday night’s show at Houston’s Verizon Wireless Theater with his club banger “Over,” whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Drizzy told his fans that “only three things matter at this time: Number one, I’m Drizzy Drake. Two, I’m part of the hottest team in the game right now — Young Money/ Cash Money. Finally, I rep H-Town till the day I die.” The Grammy-nominated artist showed his respect for the City of Syrup with a performance of the aforementioned “November 18th,” which true Houstonians know was inspired by the Screwed Up Clique’s late-90s posse cut “June 18.” One of the Clique’s original members, Lil Keke, was on hand to deliver his verse from the ensemble track. And the Houston rap scene was amply represented at the concert: In addition to Keke, Drake brought out Houston luminaries Z-Ro, Trae Tha Truth and the Underground King himself, the timeless Bun B. Cash Money’s Birdman, who has made appearances on several dates of the tour, came through for “Money to Blow,” and then performed the Big Tymers hit “Still Fly.” The theater seemed to shake to the rafters as the excited crowd began reciting lyrics — “Gator boots with the pimped-out Gucci shoes.” The stage was then turned over to Young Money members Gudda Gudda and Lil Twist, who came out to assist on “Bed Rock.” The show continued with the lovemaking theme on “A Night Off,” which saw Drake bring out a microphone whose stand was covered in female undergarments. The ladies went berserk, throwing bras and panties at the dynamic MC, a practice that has become a ritual at every Away From Home show. In an interview Drake gave to CNN , he said he was attempting to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most bras thrown at a performer during a single show. When Drake chose a 27-year-old Houston fan to join him onstage, he warned her that anything could happen, including licking, sucking or kissing. No one seemed to be left disappointed at this show. And while he may not have been given the key to the City of Syrup, Drake proved he already has the town on lock. Are you planning to see Drake in Concert now that he’s added more dates to his tour?
