‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Gets Exorcised On Season Premiere

Season nine gets off to a unique start during the first round of auditions in New York and Texas. By Natasha Chandel Hampton Williams on “So You Think You Can Dance” Photo: Fox “So You Think You Can Dance” is back and kicking — literally. Limbs flew left, right, center and even behind the head, as season nine of the dance competition premiered Thursday night (May 24) with the first round of auditions in New York and Texas. Dancers from all over the world auditioned for a golden ticket to Sin City, showcasing a dynamic range of artists, styles and emotional stories. Both cities delivered a plethora of highly skilled, highly entertaining and highly ridiculous talent. The highlight of the first auditions was not the usual crowd-pleasing contemporary and hip-hop styles, but rather, unique and inventive forms of dance, including animation, lyrical freestyle and … exorcism? Standouts Chehon Wespi-Tschopp from Switzerland dazzled the judges with a stoic contemporary routine showing off his immense strength and a chiseled body that judge Mary Murphy made sure to squeeze extra hard as Wespi-Tschopp came over to graciously hug the panel for his Vegas pass. But the real standout of the night, by far, was Texan Hampton Williams, creator of his own style of dance titled “exorcist style.” The grimly angelic performance saw Williams pop and lock every single muscle in his body, like never before seen on the show. He brought not only Murphy to tears, but many members of the audience as well, and received a unanimous standing ovation through the theater. “I think you could be a genius,” judge Nigel Lythgoe told the young man before offering to pay for Williams’ Vegas ticket himself if the other judges did not put him through. Gut Wrenchers Being the soulful art form that dance is, “SYTYCD” is notorious for exposing its contestants’ gut-wrenching tales of adversity, and tonight’s premiere was full of such stories. Whether it was Jarell Rochelle’s need to succeed before his mother went blind to Sam Shefler’s battle with autism, the uniting factor was simple: a love for dance. Although Shefler did not move forward with his lyrical freestyle, he received a standing ovation for his courage and was advised never to stop dancing. Feel-Good Moments Mother of two Bree Hafen, from Texas, won the judges’ hearts and had her golden ticket delivered by her young son. The real kicker came when her daughter, also an aspiring dancer, chimed “my turn” after her mom performed a remarkably fluid contemporary routine. She immediately went into a relev

Kanye West, Kim Kardashian Tease Romance In New ‘Keeping Up’ Trailer

‘Kanye and Kim, they’re kind of like two peas in a pod,’ Khloe Kardashian says in clip for ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians.’ By Jocelyn Vena Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Photo: Splash News “Kanye and Kim, they’re kind of like two peas in a pod,” little sister Khloe Kardashian says about Kim’s romance with Kanye West in a “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” teaser . While not much footage of Kim and Yeezy made it into the clip, the little bit that did will certainly spark interest in Sunday’s season premiere of the E! reality show. As Khloe narrates her feelings about the twosome, the trailer cuts to them sitting together, dressed all in black and sharing a laugh. Kimye isn’t the only headline that made the jam-packed show trailer. Kourtney reveals to her family that she’s having a baby girl , the family goes on a drama-filled vacation to the Dominican Republic and Lamar Odom ponders his basketball-playing future, telling in-laws Bruce and Kris Jenner, “I know that I can make any team a championship-caliber team. I got to just get back.” And, yes, the infamous red-carpet flour-bombing also makes the cut. Toward the end of the teaser, mama Kris proclaims, “I left my husband for this guy,” as footage of her hugging a mysterious man is teased. A teary-eyed Kourtney says, “I don’t understand. I could never do that to my children.” However, it is unclear what exactly will play out. When MTV News caught up with Kim and Khloe , the eldest Kardashian sister noted that she wanted to keep as much of her relationship with West as private as possible. “I don’t know if I’m ready to talk about him,” Kim said. “I feel like I’ve had such a hard time sharing my love life that now I’m a little bit more reserved on that.” While Kim was tight-lipped about her man, Khloe teased her sister a bit about the romance. “No I love, it. You’re like a wild, crowd-surfing child and I love you.” On Wednesday, Kim and Kanye were spotted in London, where Kim will launch her jewelry line. According to E! , the twosome touched down to lots of paparazzi. Kim will be doing some press while in town, including radio and TV appearances. Related Artists Kanye West

John Mayer Proud Of ‘Giant Evolutionary Steps’ On Born And Raised

At intimate New York listening party, singer says new album ‘widened the expectations of what I can do.’ By Jocelyn Vena John Mayer Photo: Mark Sullivan/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Fans and industry folks gathered at the famed Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village on Wednesday night to get an advanced listen to John Mayer ‘s new album, the country-fried, introspective Born and Raised. Before the album even played, Neil Young songs blasted through the hallowed halls of the studio. Given Mayer’s vibe on Born and Raised, which pays homage to the Young sound of the 1970s, it all made sense. When Mayer’s album was eventually put on, it was an easy transition from Young’s jangly guitar and harmonica to Mayer’s own on the album, out Tuesday. The album was recorded at Electric Lady Studios, and the Big Apple is referenced on some tracks, as on many Mayer songs before. “Records are pure reflections,” Mayer told the room. “I’m so proud it’s out. The finish line is so far off [when you’re making the record].” In recent years, Mayer has been through it all. After going TMI crazy in the press in 2010 , he has shied away from media attention. Some of that had to do with the fact that he had surgery on his vocal cords in late 2011. In fact, he still needs to go through another surgery to correct the problem. But he said he plans to record a new album this summer, regardless. “If you’re lucky, you get to make giant evolutionary steps from your first record, so I was able to do that. And you guys, I think, you’re able to come along with that step and be psyched about that evolution and I’m excited to even go further now and start coming up with melodies you haven’t heard yet,” he said, referencing his “Your Body Is a Wonderland” days on his 2001 debut, Room for Squares. During the chat he explained that every song on this album is his favorite, for perhaps the first time in his career, adding that they “widened the expectations of what I can do.” Additionally, after having to cancel his 2012 spring trek , Mayer confirmed he want to hit the road in spring 2013 “and have two records to pull from. … I think I can cheat time a little bit because as you know, I try to cheat time all the time. So I think we can all catch up so that a year from now there’s two records. It’ll be like Born and Raised part two because there’s certain things I want to keep doing.” Related Artists John Mayer

Daniel Radcliffe, Jon Hamm to Play Same Russian Doctor, Naturally

Well! Quite a week for inspired Russian-history film news! If it’s not Paul Schrader adapting ballerina biopics , then its Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe pairing up to play the same guy in Sky Arts’ four-part series A Young Doctor’s Notebook . The project will adapt a collection of short stories by Mikhail Bulgakov, who loosely based the darkly comic tales on his own experience attempting to practice medicine in the semi-civilized squalor of revolutionary Russia. Radcliffe will portray the young doctor of the title, who will have interludes throughout with the older version of himself played by Hamm. “I have been an obsessive Bulgakov reader for a couple of years now so when the opportunity to become involved in this project came up, I could barely contain my excitement,” Radcliffe said in a statement first reported by the Guardian. “The book is funny, grotesque and heartfelt in equal measure and I look forward to working with a great group of people to help bring it to life.” Hamm, meanwhile, said he was “thrilled to get the opportunity to work on such rich source material with such fantastically talented people whose work I greatly respect.” See? They’re already speaking the same language. Just throw on an accent and we’re good to go. Sky Arts will air the series in 2013. [ The Guardian ]

If Justin Bieber Is Your ‘Boyfriend,’ Ying Yang Twins Can Be ‘Your Man’

‘Boyfriend’ remixers have nothing but praise for teen crooner and comparisons to their ‘Wait (The Whisper Song).’ By Jocelyn Vena Ying Yang Twins Photo: Evan Agostini/ Getty Images Justin Bieber ‘s “Boyfriend” got the remix treatment from rap duo the Ying Yang Twins this week. The twosome dropped their take on the singer’s single late Wednesday, amping up the song’s sexiness with their signature sense of innuendo. Playing on the song’s title, the Twins (D-Roc and Kaine) note on their verses that while Bieber is offering up his services as your boyfriend, they’re a little older and a little wiser and want to be your older sister’s man. When MTV News spoke to D-Roc on Thursday (May 10), he talked a little bit about wanting to have fun with the Mike Posner/ Mason Levy-produced track. “He want to be your boyfriend, but I want to be your man. I’m grown. I’m good and grown,” he said. “I’ve been through that boyfriend/girlfriend stage, but you know, he’s going through that, so that’s what complemented the track too. It’s like, ‘OK, I want to be your man. I don’t want to be your boyfriend. I’m bigger than the boyfriend.’ But that’s Justin Bieber, so if you got a little sister, Justin Bieber want to be her boyfriend.” D-Roc was also inspired to remix the track after many music fans had noted comparisons between Bieber’s song and the Twins’ 2005 hit “Wait (The Whisper Song).” “Before Justin Bieber actually had dropped the song, the hype around it, everybody was calling me saying, ‘Hey, man, did y’all hear the Justin Bieber song?’ I was so amped up to hear the song too. When I actually did, I listened to it and I was like, it sounded like us. He complimented us,” he said. “So I wanted to compliment him by getting on it. “It was there,” he added of the comparisons. “But the thing about it is, for him to step out for the first time rapping and we was the first compliment that he gave, I felt like that young man is on job. And he did it well. It made a statement to me like, ‘OK, he just trying to grow up,’ and with him growing up, like, he want y’all to take him as he’s grown. ‘I’m 18. I’m grown now. I can do my own thing.’ And what better lane, and he picked us, and I feel like that was a compliment and to compliment him back, I wanted to do the remix.” While D-Roc has yet to meet the singer, he has high praise for him. “He’s a very talented young man,” he said. “Like, to have as many talents as he knows how to do, you know, it’s like he’s a threat. He’s gonna come in, and they better watch out for the young man, ’cause the young man got something to bring to the table.” Bieber will drop his highly anticipated album, Believe, on June 19. “Boyfriend” is the lead single, and last Thursday, he dropped the video for the hit. Delmon Young Arrested for Alleged Anti-Semitic Tirade

Delmon Young, the starting left fielder for the Detroit Tigers, was arrested this morning outside a midtown Manhattan hotel after the former first round draft pick allegedly got into a fight with a panhandler wearing a yarmulke. Police told The New York Post that Young starting screaming at the homeless man upon being approached for change, shouting “”F–king Jews! F–king Jews!” The incident took place around 2:40 a.m. and Young proceeded to get into a physical altercation with men who confronted him about his tirade. He scratched one on the arm and pushed another to the pavement. Sources say hotel employees rushed to the scene, sent all parties to their rooms and called 911. They added that Young appeared “highly intoxicated” before he was arrested and taken to the Midtown North Precinct. Young, who has just one home run this season, is in town because the Tigers are scheduled to face the Yankees tonight. A couple years ago, during a game against the Pawtucket Red Sox, the problematic outfielder threw a bat at an umpire.
