Rihanna: The Greatest Star, The Worst Nicknames

We try to come up with a nickname befitting Rihanna’s superstar status, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Rihanna Photo: Samir Hussein/WireImage I realize this is probably not important, what with all the horrible stuff going on in the world, but Rihanna totally needs a good nickname. More specifically, she deserves a good nickname, one befitting her status as a true pop&B icon. To wit, she has scored a staggering 10 #1’s on the Billboard Hot 100 — making her the youngest ever to achieve such a feat — including four in 2010 alone. She has released six albums since 2005 (her next is due in November), which have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy awards, is the official ambassador of Barbados (where she ranks somewhere between Doug E. Fresh and rum on the nation’s “greatest exports” scale), has signed lucrative endorsement deals with everyone from Gucci to Vita Coco, makes really great, slightly controversial music videos , takes amazing meet-and-greet photos , commands a huge fanbase she affectionately refers to as her Navy and is a true pioneer of the hair arts. And yet, the best moniker we have been able to come up with for her seems to be “RiRi.” Or maybe “The Bajan Beauty,” which sounds like something Bob Barker would’ve come up with while hosting the 1978 Miss Universe pageant. Clearly, this needs to change. After all, Madonna is the “Queen of Pop.” Lady Gaga is “Mother Monster.” Mariah Carey is “Mimi.” Rihanna has earned the right to be mentioned in the same sentence as all three, yet she often isn’t. And I can think of no other reason beside the fact that she does not have a truly great nickname. Sure, I guess you could call her “The Princess of the Roc,” but really, that was Teairra Mari’s handle first (and everyone seems to be rushing to transfer it over to Willow Smith), and in a lot of ways, it just seems lacking. Rihanna demands something new, something descriptive, something that manages to capture everything that makes her so sensational: her youth, her heritage, her effervescence. Also, on a selfish note, I am desperately looking for new way to refer to her in stories. My job is hard sometimes. Of course, coming up with suitable sobriquets is actually a lot tougher than you’d imagine. An honorary title must not only fit like a glove — could Aretha Franklin really be anything but the Queen of Soul? — but it must be earned. Elvis didn’t become the King, overnight, after all. Yet I can think of no current star in need of a nickname more than Rihanna (is it any wonder that she once sang “What’s my name?”). And since no one else seems to be stepping up, I’ve created a list of potential choices — nicknames befitting of a true star. Of course, if you’ve got one, let me know in the comments below. Like I said, nicknaming is hard work. The 21st Century Girl : Works on two levels: One, it plays up the fact that Rihanna is basically the face of 21st-century pop: a multi-national, genre-bending, tech-crunching (have you seen her Twitter account?) superstar. Two, it is a play on that old T.Rex song, and T.Rex are awesome — just like Rihanna. Who cares if Willow Smith has a song by that name too? Rihanna is the 21st Century Girl. The Admiral : Since she is the commanding officer of the Rihanna Navy. The only downside? David Robinson seemingly locked this one up back in 1986. The Bajan Baroness, or the Baroness : If all the other royalty nicknames are taken (shoot, even Fergie is the Dutchess), well, then let’s dub Rihanna the Baroness. Not only does it sound cool, but there’s a certain badass swagger to it. I’m sure no one remembers the old G.I. Joe character at this point anyway. The Caribbean Queen : You know, because Barbados is located in the Caribbean. And because Rihanna is a queen. Also brings to mind Billy Ocean , which is always a good thing. The Divine Miss R : This one might piss off Bette Midler fans. Also, it seems sort of old-fashioned to refer to Rihanna as “Miss.” Still, I think there’s something to this one. It sort of captures her “respect the bitch” essence. Lil’ Sis, or Sis : Because she really seems like everyone’s kid sister (and because Kid Sister was already taken). Fun, flirty and just a little bit fierce, just like Rihanna. The Only Girl : A nod to one of her biggest hits, also the fact that she really is the only girl in the pop game worth caring about. In a pinch, could be shortened to “The One.” The Pride of Barbados : It’s the national flower of her homeland. Also, people there are proud of her. Its scientific name is caesalpinia pulcherrima, so maybe also “‘Pini”? The Saint Michael Siren : Gives props to the Bajan parish where she was born and also pays tribute to her voice. Of course, also sort of paints her as a seductive bird woman who lured sailors to their death. Which Rihanna nickname is your favorite? Or can you do better? Let us know in the comments! Jennifer Aniston and Some Titties at Lifetime’s Five Premiere of the Day

Jennifer Aniston had the best premiere of her life…because she paid some chick to show up with a mustache and wig topless…because everyone loves titties…even not that great titties…because they are titties… The premiere was for some breast cancer thing….sounds fun….and although not topless, Jennifer Aniston brought her tits there…because shes the director of one of the segments…but more importantly….she owes alot to her tits…and if she ever got breast cancer…and they had to amputate those chronically hard nipples…she’d likely be forced into retirement…so milking breast cancer is works out better for her…makes her feel like she’s doing a difference…and speaking of difference…I don’t hate Jennifer Aniston anymore, despite how cunty I assume she is, I actually find her kinda hot…it’s probably cuz she’s getting fucked…you know since you always want what you can’t have and she was so desperate after Brad Pitt cheated on her, that I just assumed anyone with even half a testicle could get her… Who cares. Here’s her tits.

Rihanna Bikini Top on Set of the Day

Rihanna is alright. As much as I hate on her for no reason other than bittnerness for my sex addiction that is overpowered by my erectile dysfunction I blame my wife for….I actually don’t hate her. I think it’s pretty amazing that she got from the Islands to the top of the charts with international success, because even if she was a teen whore, she made it fucking happen…but more importantly, I don’t hate her for being half naked often, for singing about the smells of sex, I feel it is a good contribution to the morals and values of our youth who listen to her….I mean the fact she gets on the radio with lyrics I can practically masturbate to, in videos of her half naked, means she’s doing something right….and here she is on set of some video.

2011 Urbanworld Film Festival Recap [PHOTOS]

Read more from the original source:

Black Hollywood came out in full force at the 15th annual Urbanworld Film Festival .  The opening film Brooklyn Boheme , which documents the rise of  black artistic talent during the 90′s in Fort Greene, was the brainchild of director Diane Paragas and author Nelson George , who witnessed (and was a part of) this late 20th century urban renaissance.  ”It was this amazing community that so many artists came out of, who ended up affecting the world.” Director Spike Lee, comedian Chris Rock, and actor John Boyega ( Attack The Block ) , were in attendance to show support for the film.  Boyega, who was recently cast as  the lead in the the highly anticipated HBO drama “Da Brick” (loosely based on Mike Tyson’s early years), had just spent most of his day undergoing a grueling workout session, in order to prepare for his role as a boxer.  When asked about the media dubbing him the ‘British Denzel Washington’ Boyega replied “I still have a lot of growing to do before I can be a Denzel, but he’s very inspirational.”  Spike Lee, who is directing the pilot episode of “Da Brick”,  immediately cast Boyega after seeing his breakout performance in Attack The Block , called him a “great young actor.” Chris Rock, who also co-stars in Brooklyn Boheme recalled some of his favorite memories of living in Fort Greene.  “I remember a lot of artists living there like Spike, Halle Berry, Wesley Snipes Mos Def, Erykah Badu—just an interesting time.  It was kind of like living in Detroit during the Motown years.” The star wattage continued to shine brightly Friday night as director Mario Van Peebles , 50 Cent and Lynn Whitfield were on hand to promote their film “All Things Fall Apart.”  50 hit the red carpet with his own entourage of eye candy, posing for pics with the cast.  Van Peebles originally intended to play the lead role, but after meeting 50 “a bright, affable young brother,” he opted to take up directing reins for the project instead. Reality star Tami Roman pulled double duty promoting two projects—as an actress in Noel Calloway’s Life, Love, Soul and as a producer in Jerry LaMothe’s film short,  The Tombs which follows a young man’s experiences in the New York City central booking jail system. Spoken word legend Sonia Sanchez was also in attendance to promote her documentary Shake Loose Memories . At the Q&A which took place after, Sanchez gave a call of action to the youth of today, by reminding them of the sacrifices of the generation before.  ”We didn’t live our lives just so you could be pretty.” The HBO dramedy,  “How To Make It In America” screened their second season premiere, followed by a Q&A with author/culture critic Toure and the cast, which included Victor Rasuk and Luiz Guzman . The film festival closed out Saturday evening with the premieres of Life, Love Soul, Kinyarwanda and Yelling To The Sky. Radio host Egypt Sherrod, who makes her acting debut in Life, Love, Soul confessed she was a bundle of nerves the first day on set.  Luckily her co-star Jamie Hector  calmed her down her with some very simple advice, “Just breathe.” Victoria Mahoney , director of the coming-of-age feature,  Yelling To The Sky was in high spirits, as her project was recently picked up for distribution by MPI Media Group.  Asked how she was able to round up some of the best and brightest young talent ( Zoe Kravitz ,  Gabourey Sidibe , Yolonda Ross , Shareeka Epps ) Mahoney replied “with a lot of begging…and persistence!”  As for her advice to up and coming female directors, Mahoney had this to say “Never take no for an answer. If they close the door on you, go through the side window.” On Sunday, the awards luncheon was hosted by model/actress Liris Crosse and Vibe Magazine’s Datwon Thomas in downtown Tribeca.  There was a true sense of community amongst the directors, actors/actresses, and screenwriters, as past Urbanworld alumnae like Qasim B. ( Mooz-lum ) and Ava DuVernay ( I Will Follow ) mingling freely with this year’s new crop of talent.  Jamil Walker Smith, actor and director of “Make A Movie Like Spike” (featured in this year’s festival) eloquently expressed his wish for aspiring black filmmakers: “Hopefully the more personal we make our films, the more universal our stories become.” The list of winners is as follows: Best Narrative Feature MAMITAS Written and Directed by Nicholas Ozeki; Produced by Adam Renehan, Andrew Daniel Wells Honorable Mention: Make a Movie Like Spike (Written and Directed by Jamil Walker Smith) Restless City (for Cinematography – Bradford Young; Directed by Andrew Dosunmu) Best Narrative Short WAKE Written and Directed by Bree Newsome; Produced by Valerie Champagne, Bree Newsome Honorable Mention: Counterfeit (Written and Directed by Geoff Bailey) The Man in the Glass Case (Written and Directed by Maxwell Addae) Best Documentary Feature ZERO PERCENT Written and Directed by Tom Skousen; Produced by Robert Fernandez, Tom Skousen Best Documentary Short LOVE LOCKDOWN Directed by Nadia Hallgren; Produced by Jamie-James Medina Honorable Mention: Common Ground (for cinematography – Eduard Jakaj, Stephen Dwight; Directed by Hollie Fifer) Best Screenplay AFTER THE STORM Written by Cole Wiley Honorable Mention: Blackbird (Written by David Polk) The Divide (Written by Rashmi Singh) Best Teleplay WHITEHALL Written by Dawn M. Machine Gun Kelly Shoots His First Bad Boy Video

‘I never been on a real video set,’ MGK admits to MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Matt Elias Machine Gun Kelly on the set of the “Stereo” music video Photo: MTV News Bigger deals mean bigger budgets. While on the come-up, Cleveland, Ohio’s Machine Gun Kelly made the most of his independent music grind, but his new deal with Diddy ‘s Bad Boy Records has allowed the rapid-fire rapper to do things slightly bigger. “This is the first video we’re doing with Bad Boy/Interscope,” MGK told MTV News on Monday while on the set of the Colin Tilley-directed clip for his mixtape cut “Stereo.” “Man, our videos? C’mon man, they’re like all directed by us; like jokes, then we turn it and flip it and make it great,” he said of his past vids like “Cleveland” and “Salute.” For “Stereo,” Kells invaded Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional Facility in Whittier, California. “We shut the whole thing down, moved all the prisoners in one room and they’re all jerking off together, it’s pretty crazy,” he joked. “It’s just a bunch of just badass girls, and we’re all just getting shipped to the correctional facility and we’re just having a bad time. It’s like the music comes on and it kinda cheers us up, kinda just excited and ready to do whatever.” In August, Diddy announced that he signed MGK on “RapFix Live,” and while Kelly doesn’t exactly fit the Bad Boy rapper mold set by the likes of the Notorious B.I.G. , Mase and the LOX , Combs insisted that he doesn’t want the youngster to change a thing. “He will not be changing for Bad Boy; he will not have a typical Bad Boy swag,” Diddy said. “He’s not going to be popping champagne or driving around in Bentleys. He’s gonna be him and true to himself. He has a lot of creative control in his project.” After breaking through with his 2010 mixtape Lace Up, MGK caught hip-hop’s attention. His popularity began to grow so much that the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers began to play his hometown ode “Cleveland” at home games during the 2010-2011 basketball season. On the upbeat “Stereo,” MGK raps metaphorically about his love affair with music and his stereo. For Kells, turning his underground fan-favorite into his first big visual means the world to him. “We’re just about being organic and keeping everything how it was before the deal, so we’re taking one of the older songs that the fans love,” he said. “I never been on a real video set. I’m so happy I’m from Cleveland, Ohio, dude. This whole experience is just crazy.” Related Artists Machine Gun Kelly
