World Youth Day 2012 Begins Today

World Youth Day 2012 in Spain  begins today.  I attended these events regularly throughout my youth and found them to be edifying to my soul. Catholic pilgrims from across the world flocked to Madrid Monday for a youth festival expected to draw more than a million faithful, with the highlight an open-air mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI. The World Youth Day festival, which runs from Tuesday to Sunday, has been criticized, however, for the costs involved in welcoming the head of the Roman Catholic Church as Spain struggles with an economic crisis. Gospel Stars & Pastors Send Love Via Twitter To The Family Of Pastor Zachery Tims [VIDEO] But WYD officials say most of the costs would be covered by the pilgrims themselves — arriving from 193 countries — and the event would be a massive tourist boost for the city of Madrid. A huge stage has been erected at the central Plaza de Cibeles, one of Madrid’s most emblematic sites. The square will host three of the four main events during WYD: the opening mass on Tuesday, the papal welcome two days later and the Stations of the Cross ceremony on Friday. On Saturday, hundreds of thousands will be entertained by pop groups at the Cuatro Vientos air base southwest of the capital, where the pope holds a “Prayer Vigil” in the evening. The young pilgrims will spend the night under the stars at the air base with duvets and rugs on a vast esplanade the size of 48 football fields. The 84-year-old pontiff celebrates mass there on Sunday morning at a white altar almost 200 metres (660 feet) long in front of a wave-shaped stage and under a giant parasol “tree”, made of interwoven golden rods that will protect him from Madrid’s brutal August heat. Madrid’s airport was bustling Monday with tens of thousands of excited young pilgrims carrying large backpacks, studying maps to find out how to get to the churches or schools where they will be staying, or waiting for buses.Around 80 percent of the roughly 450,000 people who have registered for the event have already arrived in other Spanish cities and were expected to make the trip to Madrid on Monday or Tuesday, organizers said. For Discussion: New Study Shows That Self-Esteem Levels Vary Between Race And Age

Check out this article and let us know what you think. Although Hispanics tend to have lower self-esteem than blacks or whites in the teen years, by age 30 their self-esteem has increased to the point that they have higher self-esteem than whites, a new study suggests. And in both adolescence and young adulthood, blacks have higher self-esteem than whites. By age 30, whites trailed both Hispanics and blacks in terms of self-esteem, according to the report published online July 4 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland made this finding after analyzing U.S. survey data of more than 7,000 young adults from 1994 to 2008. The participants ranged in age from 14 to 30 years. Over the course of 14 years, the study authors examined how five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism) affected the youth’s self-esteem. In addition, the researchers also looked at the participants’ sense of life mastery, risk-taking tendencies, gender, ethnicity, health and income. “We tested for factors that we thought would have an impact on how self-esteem develops,” the study’s lead author, Ruth Yasemin Erol, said in news release from the American Psychological Association. “Understanding the trajectory of self-esteem is important to pinpointing and timing interventions that could improve people’s self-esteem.” The researchers found that conscientiousness, emotional stability, a feeling of mastery and being extraverted are key to predicting the direction a person’s self-esteem will take as they grow up, and that income did not affect this course. These findings, they pointed out, could assist health professionals in targeting treatments. We’re honestly surprised that older whites tend to lag in self-esteem in their latter years in comparison to blacks and hispanics. Hit up the comments section and state your piece. Source

The private two-hour funeral at a small church near Palm Beach was attended by Springsteen’s wife, Patti Scialfa, as well as fellow E Street bandmember Steven Van Zandt, singer Jackson Browne and Miami Heat general manager Pat Riley. “Clarence was a man of unconditional love, but his love came with a lot of conditions,” Springsteen said of his friend of more than four decades. His comments drew some knowing laughs and nods from the crowd of 150 packed into the small Royal Poinciana Chapel, according to the U2 to Coldplay and Slash, paid tribute to Clemons . “His partnership with Bruce Springsteen and the rest of the E Street Band brought great pride to our state and joy to every fan of this music around the world.” Clemons was born in Virginia in 1942, but moved to Jersey as a youth counselor before joining Springsteen’s band. “On a personal note, when I heard about the Big Man’s passing on Saturday night, I was struck with an overwhelming feeling that the days of my youth were now finally over,” Christie said in a statement. “My condolences to Clarence’s family and all the members of the E Street Band.” Related Photos Clarence Clemons: A Career In Photos Related Artists Bruce Springsteen

Kendrick Lamar ‘Blessed’ To Get RZA On ‘Ronald Reagan Era’

Section 80 track featuring Wu-Tang Clan leader released online Friday. By Rob Markman Kendrick Lamar Photo: MTV News Save for a refrain on Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy or verses on any of his Wu-affiliated projects, Wu-Tang Clan’s chief producer and orchestrator RZA doesn’t make many guest appearances these days, so New West Coast representative Kendrick Lamar knows how lucky he is to have vocals from the Abbot on his latest single, “Ronald Reagan Era.” “A mutual friend said he was diggin’ the music, and he blessed me to get these [RZA a cappella vocals]. I was sittin’ on them for a while, like, ‘Damn, I got some RZA joints up in my hard drive. That’s incredible,’ ” Lamar told MTV News. “So I didn’t want to touch ’em just yet unless it was right. So I was sittin’ on them for a while, then I was like, ‘You know what? This is the perfect sound right here.’ My dude Tae Beast did the beat, and it came together, man. It was magic.” “Ronald Reagan Era” — which was released online Friday and will be featured on Lamar’s upcoming album, Section 80 — finds the Compton MC rapping over a haunting loop. He raps of trifling street tales set in the late 1980s, when Ronald Reagan was serving his second term as the 40th president of the United States. Lamar, who was born in 1987, draws a distinct parallel between his youth and Reagan’s reign, sometimes referred to as the “crack era.” Lamar rhymes: “1987, the children of Ronald Reagan, rake the leaves off your front porch with a machine blowtorch.” The RZA’s contribution is slight, but his distinct wet drawl is pronounced as he repeats “California dungeons” during the song’s chorus, reinforcing Lamar’s feeling of coming up from the bottom. Lamar told MTV News that Section 80, due out in July, has received blessings from Dr. Dre , but won’t feature production from the Good Doctor.
