As part of a collaborative effort with the Los Angeles Unified School District, UCLA and NASA, the foundation offers a program called Camp Skyhook which takes grade school students on a five-day educational experience in the Angeles National Forest. The organization has served over 4,000 students since its inception. “When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room, or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple. Sell it all,” Abdul-Jabbar wrote in a statement featured on his website. “Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold plating celebrating something I did a long time ago, I’d rather look into the delighted face of a child holding their first caterpillar and think about what I might be doing for their future. That’s a history that has no price.” He partnered Goldin Auctions to sell his items which were each worth thousands of dollars. Among the items that were featured in the auction were four of his championship rings, an all-star ring, an MVP trophy, and an autographed basketball from 1989. According to Bleacher Report , the items were auctioned off for nearly $3 million. Underserved communities across the country lack access to resources and funding for STEM education. It’s powerful to see Abdul-Jabbar use his platform to change that narrative. That’s what we ended up doing,” said Rhimes in an interview with Business Insider . She also added that it’s important to authentically bring narratives to life when working in television and not chase trends. “The goal is to make sure it’s not a trend. I don’t know what I can do to encourage it. I tell the stories I tell and I do it naturally.” Rhimes has seen success with many of the projects that she’s created including Private Practice , Scandal , and How to Get Away with Murder . In 2017, she inked a multi-year deal with Netflix where through her Shondaland production company she will develop eight series. T he creators behind Napa Valley’s first Black-owned winery estate are continuing to make monumental moves in the wine and spirits industry. According to the Philadelphia Tribune , Brown Estate Vineyards has inked a deal with Delta Air Lines to have its wine collection available on their flights. Delta Airlines is ending Black History Month on a high note. The airline is partnering with Brown Estate Winery, the first black-owned winery Napa Valley. https://t.co/qs4XZ8QxgD — Blavity News (@Blavity) March 1, 2019 The partnership between the airline and the winery is a part of Delta’s effort to take a more inclusive approach in regards to the vendors that the company works with. The brand was introduced to Delta by Carlyne Scott who serves as a member on the company’s Black community business resource group. Initially, Brown Estate’s products were featured on a Delta flight from San Francisco to New York as part of a Black History Month special, but leaders at the airline decided that they wanted to take the partnership further. On Tuesday, Delta announced that Brown Estate wines will become one of their suppliers during the 2019-2020 winter season. The leadership team at Delta is excited to bring the brand on board. “Partnering with innovative, diverse suppliers from certified small-, minority- and women-owned businesses like Brown Estate is fundamental to Delta’s strategy to keep climbing year-round,” Heather Ostis , Vice President of Supply Chain Management, Delta Air Lines, said in a statement. “Seeking employee perspectives and leveraging unique ideas brings us closer to meeting that goal, while creating the highest quality experience for our customers.” Deneen Brown —who founded the company with her siblings 24 years ago and now serves as president of Brown Estate Vineyards—says that this is a major win for her and her family and is excited to partner with Delta. “We are delighted to partner with Delta Air Lines,” said Brown. “Delta’s all-in commitments to the spirit of inclusion and to their wine program are perfectly aligned with our core values at Brown Estate.” Brown Estate Vineyards is not only the first but the only Black-owned winery estate in Napa Valley, California. There is a need for more representation in the wine industry. Research shows that less than 5 percent of wineries in the U.S. are Black-owned. Khloé Kardashian Has Twitter Flabbergasted & A Congressional Eye Role Moves The Country: This Week’s Winners & Losers

Source: David Becker / Getty It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Politics continue to be filled with twists and turns, while the Kardashians seem to keep themselves in the same mess. This week’s winners below, followed by losers on the next page! Winners Stacey Plaskett’s eye roll A good eye roll can move mountains. It can bring peace in the midst of the storm. And on Wednesday, Stacey Plaskett ‘s eye roll at the Michael Cohen hearing affirmed people’s thoughts and feelings across the world. Cohen was testifying to the House Oversight and Reform Committee about his experience working for Donald Trump and all the foul things he allegedly witnessed from the current pres. When the time came for the GOP to question Cohen’s testimony, one annoying politician, Representative Jim Jordan  was complaining that he wasn’t provided a copy of Cohen’s opening statement far enough in advance. Jordan was already in the running for Most Annoying Specimen in the room for his douchey attitude and his mere allegiance to Trump . Thus, when Plaskett, the nonvoting delegate for the Virgin Islands in the House of Representatives, heard Jordan’s complaint, she blessed us with the first great eye-a-tude of the year . She even seemed to mouth the words “be quiet” when Jordan started wasting breath with his complaints. Enjoy the moment below…   People felt it in their souls. . @StaceyPlaskett is making me book a trip to the Virgin Island (which she represents) because I know the food is gonna be good and the hospitality right up my ally. Behind the scenes Black people  At one point, when people talked about diversity in the movie business, they usually meant the people in front of the camera, not acknowledging the power that can be held behind the camera. Now in 2019, people like Ava DuVernay, Ryan Coogler , and Jordan Peele are getting recognition for their cinematic storytelling, but still, many Black faces on the technical side fail to get their due recognition. That seems to be changing thanks to some major Oscar wins on Sunday for costume designer Ruth Carter and production designer Hannah Beachler. Both women won for Black Panther, making them the first Black women to win in their respective categories of Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Ms. Beachler was the first Black woman period to even be nominated in her category. Though the Oscars continue to cause mixed emotions with their decision making , the win for Carter and Beachler on Sunday gives more exposure to talent that can inspire women of color in the future. Check out both of their moving speeches in the clips below!

Soulja Boy’s Boney A** Ran Up Nia Like She Was A Man & Showed His True Colors On ‘Marriage Boot Camp’ Last Night

Read more here:

Source: Jesse Grant / Getty Welp, Soulja Boy had a nice run but he’s done in my book. “Big Draco,” who isn’t big at all, lost all respect I had for him when he attempted to intimidate and overpower his on-again-off-again girlfriend Nia Riley on last night’s episode of Marriage Bootcamp: Hip Hop Edition. In case you missed it, or haven’t seen it floating around your timeline, Soulja was furious Nia wouldn’t pay him any attention and ran up on her while she laid in bed. She was clearly petrified and let out an ear-piercing scream that woke up the other couples in the house. Nia fought him off, but it’s clear it wasn’t the first time Soulja behaved that way. it was disgusting to watch and Soulja only retreated when Tammy entered their room and rescued Nia from the situation. Of course he tried to apologize the next day, with the caveat, he didn’t hit her. Well people abuse isn’t just hitting a woman, it involves intimidation, manipulation and scare tactics to exert your power. Social media is polarized over the incident. Some insinuate Nia should be able to overpower Soulja because of her size, while others recognize Soulja’s behavior continues to aggravate Nia’s history with abuse, she was raped. And surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, none of the men in the house checked Soulja on his behavior. It took another woman to stand up for her. It’s clear Nia and Soulja aren’t together right now. They were entirely too toxic for one another and both respectively have some growing to do. In the mean time, lil Draco is cancelled and Teddy Riley needs to roll up on him. #RedTableTalk: Five Takeaways From Jordyn Woods’ Sit Down With Jada Pinkett Smith

Go here to read the rest:

Source: Hollywood To You/Star Max/GC Images/Getty / Theo Wargo The interview that we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived! On Friday (March 1), Jordyn Woods sat down at the red table with her “auntie” Jada Pinkett Smith to discuss the rumors that she slept with Tristan Thompson , the baby daddy and ex of her best friend’s sister, Khloe Kardashian . The 21-year-old stressed that while she was severely bullied on and offline after the news hit of the alleged incident, she remained silent, out of respect for the Kardashians. But when she saw that her own family’s lives were being threatened, she knew it was time to put them first and speak her truth. And that’s exactly what she did. She chose to share her story at the Red Table Talk because she has known Jada and Will her whole life. See, her father John Woods , worked on the set of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air , where he and Will became friends. From there, Jordyn and Jayden Smith forged a friendship that down the road included Kylie Jenner . Jada, who is also friends with the Kardashians, appeared pragmatic, wanting Jordyn to focus on the things she could have done differently in this situation in order to get to the bottom of the truth. (Translation: She couldn’t hold Tristan accountable for anything he did or place any blame on him.) Here are the biggest takeaways we got from the interview: Jordyn Claims She Shouldn’t Have Been There: The 21-year-old admits to Jada that she was out to dinner with her friends and went to another bar afterwards. When the bar closed, a friend told her they were going to someone’s house and that someone ended up being Tristan. Jordyn claims she was drunk, but wasn’t being inappropriate with Tristan. She never gave him a lap dance, never was over him and touching him other than her laying her feet on his legs. However, she feels that she shouldn’t have been to the party in the first place. Tristan Kissed Her As She Was Leaving His House: Jordyn claims that as she left his house at 7am to meet her driver, Tristan asked if she wanted to stay, she declined and then he leaned in and kissed her on the mouth without her consent. Shocked, Jordyn left and went home. She later admitted to Khloe and Kylie that she was at his house, but she never said anything about the kiss. SHE NEVER HAD SEX WITH HIM: Jordyn was clear that she never had sex with Tristan and that she is willing to take a lie detector test to prove her case. In no way has she contacted Tristan, there was no prior relationship and she has no intention of ever calling him. She also was clear: She knows that she is not the reason why Khloe and Tristan broke up. The Kardashians Have A Hell Of A Lot Of Nerve: With all of the men they have allegedly been with that have had girlfriends prior, this idea that they are all this upset is laughable. Yes, if she slept with him that is horrible, but she said she didn’t. She has come clean that he kissed her and that she did not return the kiss and went home. Where is this same energy for Tristan, the same man that has done nothing but humiliate Khloe with his public infidelity? No ma’am. Black Folks Will Always Have Black Folks’ Back: While the Kardashians have turned their back on Jordyn, it’s clear that Black folks will always have Black folks’ back. While for some it might have appeared that Jada placed too much blame on Jordyn’s partying for what happened, she was clear that she loved her and wanted to give her the space to speak her truth and heal. That, and her and her Will would always be there for her, no matter what. OUR TAKE: We can never know if Jordyn is telling the truth, but there is something to be said about how quick the media is to crucify Black women without having a shred of proof to back any of it up. Keep your head up Jordyn! We all got our name from a woman and our game from a woman. But for some reason, we wait for commemorated days like Mother’s Day to honor the special ladies in our lives.  Women’s History Month is one of those observed months when we’re supposed to acknowledge all the ways women are great.  Women have always been strong and capable of any and everything — but we weren’t always allowed to show and prove it. We’re afforded a lot of privileges today that even our grandmothers weren’t allowed to do, and that was only 40-50 years ago.  Hit the flip to see check out all the things we as millenials get to do that our grandmother’s didn’t have the liberty to.
