Teen Pushes Tech Innovation In Nigeria Forward

A 15-year-old Nigerian teen is making waves in the tech industry with the creation of an app. Tomisin Ogunnubi ’s My Locator app—which is designed to find children who are lost—has introduced a new level of innovation to the technology sector in Nigeria, BBC reported. Tomisin Ogunnubi was just 12 when she created an app which helps lost children in Nigeria. The app—which she unveiled in 2016—utilizes the Google Maps feature to help individuals track those who are lost. There is also a functionality that allows users to add telephone numbers to the app so that they can easily share their location if an emergency were to occur. Since the launch of the app, it has been downloaded over 1,000 times. Ogunnubi says she was inspired to create My Locator because the security of children is something that is extremely important to her. “I was very conscious about security, thinking… there are different dangerous people, so I guess the idea of being able to go out safely might have been what triggered the idea for the app,” she told the news outlet. “But it was me then as my 12-year-old self-thinking, ‘Oh I’ve just learned how to create applications. How about I use what I have learned to create something that can be useful to me and other people?’” Leaders in the tech industry believe that Ogunnubi’s creation speaks volumes about the importance of racial representation in tech. Google Program Manager Aniedi Udo-Obong says Ogunnubi’s journey will encourage other Black children to follow in her footsteps. “I’m impressed with Tomisin’s app for two reasons. I prefer to see products in whatever state they are than to hear about the most brilliant idea. I like the fact that someone hatched an idea in their head and was able to bring it to fruition and complete it,” he said. He also added that there is a need for more STEM education initiatives in Nigeria stating that the country is “going to be left behind if we don’t get our own children learning at the same rate with the same tools and technologies that their contemporaries in other countries have.” Many educational institutions and non-profits are putting the focus on STEM education. Black Girls CODE, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating career pathways for young women of color in the tech industry, announced the development of a technology exploration lab in New York City. Is Gladys Knight OK? Singer, Publicist Disagree Publicly About Her Health

Source: JEFF KOWALSKY / Getty L egendary singer Gladys Knight either has pancreatic cancer or she’s completely healthy, depending on who you ask. It was widely reported Friday afternoon that during the funeral for Aretha Franklin , Knight revealed she had been stricken with pancreatic cancer — the same ailment the Queen of Soul died from earlier this month. However, a couple of hours after the reports from reputable news outlets like Ebony and the Detroit News, Knight’s publicist insisted the singer was just fine. “She’s healthy,” Javier Delgado told the Detroit Free Press. “Someone must have misinterpreted. During an interview with local television station WDIV-TV outside of the funeral, Knight seemed sure of her self when she said of Franklin , “We shared the fact that we had the same disease.” Knight’s health had never been a public concern until Friday. Prior to Franklin’s funeral, Knight had been seen at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York City just this week. People magazine published a story in February about how “ageless” the 74-year-old looked, dismissing rumors that the singer may have had plastic surgery. If Knight was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer , it would be sad but not surprising. Cancer has  been proven  to be more deadly for Black people, with that fact being resoundingly true for pancreatic cancer patients, statistics have shown since around 1970, when pancreatic cancer trends began reversing themselves along racial lines. “In white men, pancreatic cancer death rates decreased by 0.7% per year from 1970 to 1995 and then increased by 0.4% per year through 2009,” according to  research published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute . “In contrast, the rates among blacks increased between 1970 and the late 1980s (women) or early 1990s (men).” The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine took it a step further and  found through clinical research  that the “incidence of pancreatic cancer is 50 – 90% higher in African Americans than in any other racial group in the United States. Not only is pancreatic cancer more common among African Americans, but African Americans also have the poorest prognosis of any racial group because they often are diagnosed with advanced, and therefore, inoperable cancer.” SEE ALSO: Aretha Franklin Funeral Quotes: Sharpton, Holder, Obama Pay Tribute Watch Aretha Franklin’s Tribute Concert [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3824414″ overlay=”true”]

Birdman In Danger Of Losing Rights To Miami Studio

Source: JLN Photography/WENN.com / WENN Birdman is reportedly fighting to keep his rights to a famed studio in Miami that has been a recording hub to the stars. The business mogul born Bryan Williams is hoping to continue working out of the Hit Factory Criteria Recording Studios where greats like Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and others have recorded. The Blast reports : Earlier this month, EMG Transfer Agent filed documents, obtained by The Blast, seeking to take control of Birdman’s Hit Factory Criteria Recording Studios. EMG says they believe the studio is a high-end fully functioning and operating music facility, but accuse Birdman of not turning over any rent earned from clients using the studio, despite a court order. What’s more, EMG claims that big stars have been to the Hit Factory lately, including The Rock, and Marc Anthony, who is finishing up his new album. Birdman responded in court documents, arguing that the Hit Factory doesn’t get paid rent and claiming he has zilch to turn over. He says the studio is used as a developmental arm of his business to create demo tapes for up and coming young artists who have been identified by Birdman as possible stars. The document adds that despite high-profile clients still using the space, Birdman believes his name attachment is a draw for young artists and also will hurt his chances at signing another big star. If he gets kicked out of the studio, Birdman is arguing that Hit Factory will fall out of favor with the industry and hurt the business. — Photo: WENN

Colin Kaepernick’s Collusion Case Against NFL Goes Forward

Source: Patricia Schlein/WENN.com / WENN Colin Kaepernick has been fighting to have his collusion case against the NFL move to a trial and that wish has been fulfilled. The arbitrator in the matter ruled in favor of the free agent quarterback after all 32 teams in the league failed to support why they should receive a summary judgment against Kaepernick and thus taking the case to be heard before a judge. Sports Illustrated reports : The technical reason for Burbank’s ruling is that the NFL and its teams failed to convince Burbank, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, that they had met the necessary standard for summary judgment. Under Article 17 of the CBA, Burbank would have granted summary judgment if Kaepernick hadn’t shown enough evidence sufficient to raise a genuine issue of material fact. The “genuine issue” is whether the 30-year-old Kaepernick has been victimized by collusion, which in this context refers to two or more teams, or the league and at least one team, conspiring to deprive Kaepernick of his collectively bargained right to sign with a team. Kaepernick, who earlier in his career led the 49ers to a division championship and a Super Bowl appearance, contends that teams have conspired to keep him out of the NFL. They have allegedly done so on account of the controversy surrounding his kneeling during the playing of the national anthem. A key element of Kaepernick’s argument is that owners are fearful about the capacity and the willingness of President Donald Trump—an ardent critic of Kaepernick and of other players who kneel during the anthem—to damage the league’s business and legal interests. Such a concern was documented in audio recordings of owners during an October 2017 meeting that centered on Kaepernick and the national anthem. This same concern resurfaced in June 2018 when Trump rescinded a White House invitation to the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on account of his perception that Eagles players disagreed with him on the anthem (in reality, not one player on the Eagles kneeled during their Super Bowl season). The outlet adds that if Burbank can prove 14 or more teams categorically denied Kaepernick an opportunity to play, the NFL’s player union can band together and call for an end to the current collective bargaining agreement. — Photo: WENN
