Christian Siriano Made A ‘Bo Derek’ Mistake When Discussing Hair Inspo For His NYFW Show

Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty Let me start by saying Christian Siriano is an ally for the culture. He’s always leaned into dressing Black Hollywood, whether it was coming to the rescue of Leslie Jones who couldn’t find a designer to dress her on the red carpet, or stylishly shaping the curves (and even placing her on the runway) of Danielle Brooks . At the Orange Is The New Black season finale, many of the women were wearing designs by Siriano. While we praise diversity in fashion , we still have a long way to go. It shouldn’t be a headline that a designer is dressing a curvy or tall Black woman. However, his efforts, have helped to push diversity in the industry and call out designers who are still designing for the same, monolithic customer. Nevertheless, even allies can make mistakes. Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty Siriano partnered with TRESemmé for hair looks for his NYFW Spring/Summer 2020 show and while they only brought the product, he brought the inspiration. According to WWD , Sirano showed hairstylists a photo of Gigi Hadid in a braided style and dubbed the look the “Gigi Braid.” And while yes, Hadid may have worn this exact hairstyle, when I think of braids, I do not think of white women. There is nothing wrong with Gigi Hadid wearing a braided hairstyle; however, there is a huge problem in the industry (and media) with Blackness only being desired or adored when placed on white bodies. Braids have a long history going back to Africa. Specific braided styles represented class and even occasions while some braided styles were actually maps to freedom during the slave trade . Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty By simply dubbing one braided ponytail, which Black women have been wearing since they were kids as the “Gigi Braid” is erasure of a community of people. An erasure of history. Erasure is a form of racism that has been embedded in American culture when it comes to Black people. To not even acknowledge the history of something is to say it doesn’t exist. He could have still called it the ‘Gigi Braid’; however, it should have had some historical context. With a platform as large as his, simply adding that braids are historically from Black culture and natural hairstyles have seen a resurgence on the runway and red carpet, would have educated a mass of people who probably aren’t looking for this information on their own. We’ve already been through this with Bo Derek and her braids. “Bo Derek Braids” are not a thing. Bo Derek is a woman who wore braids, but she did not start or create the braided style. The ‘Bo Derek Braids’ nomenclature occurred after the 1979 movie ‘ 10 ‘. If it seems like one is nit picking, fast forward to almost 40 years later to Kim Kardashian (who whether we like it or not, influences culture), called her braids ‘Bo Derek Braids.’ Mis-education is also a form of erasure. With the CFDA placing diversity as a major importance, it’s imperative to know that it goes beyond throwing more Black models on the runway . Fashion is fantasy so inspiration will be taken from a multitude of places; it’s important to correctly site where said inspiration is derived. Jussie & Jurnee Smolett Reportedly Shopping A Movie About A “Brother & Sister” Falsely Accused

Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN According to a source close to  LoveBScott , actor Jussie Smollett and his sister Jurnee Smollett-Bell are shopping around a movie about a falsely accused brother and sister pair. And insider told the site that Jussie has been vetting directors to help him bring the film to life. The reported film plot echoes real life incidents that entangled Jussie in a criminal scandal for months. On January 29th of this year, Jussie claimed that he was attacked in Chicago late at night by two men hurling racial slurs at him. He said the alleged assailants yelled MAGA country, poured a bleach like substance on him, and left a rope around his neck. SEE ALSO:  Chicago Police Release Footage Of Jussie Smollett With A Rope Around His Neck On Night Of Alleged Attack The world erupted in outrage and sympathy for the star, until he was indicted for disorderly conduct for reportedly staging the hate crime with the assistance of two other men. On March 26th, all charges were dropped in connection to the alleged hate crime hoax in exchange for community service. But trouble for the former “Empire” front man didn’t end there–on March 27th the FBI announced they would investigate why the charges were scrubbed. Sign Up For Our Newsletter! That is wrong.” Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). It might be a risky move to bring a movie inspired by the incidents to the small screen, considering Jussie is currently facing a $130,000 lawsuit from the City of Chicago in backpay for funds used to investigate the alleged “hate hoax.” Might be best to keep a low profile until every element of this case is forgotten in the public eye and throughly washed through the criminal system. Swae Lee’s Ex Arrested After Allegedly Headbutting Rapper

Source: Paras Griffin / Getty Putting hands on someone is wrong , and it goes both ways. Swae Lee ‘s ex-girlfriend was arrested after allegedly headbutting the Rae Sremmurd rapper. She hit him with the hands too, and she was put in cuffs. According to TM Z, Swae and his ex, Marliesia Ortiz, had an argument outside of crib near Los Angeles in early August and things got so heated she reported started throwing stuff at him. She eventually put hands on him, and headbutted him, before security got her out the paint. This is when the struggle rises, exponentially. According to the cops, it was Ortiz who called 911, claiming Swae sexually assaulted her. However, when the cops arrived, she changed her story, and even admitted to throwing items. Despite claiming Swae had strangled her, the cops decided to arrest Ortiz. These two might want to stay clear of each other. Just saying. Commissioned by Ashley Stewart “Is your teacher famous like my teacher?” The question, posed by a particularly precarious elementary school student referred to Tiffany Flamer, an educator who outside of a few low stakes beauty shoots had overnight become the face of a national advertising campaign. Named Ms. Ashley Stewart in the brand’s annual Finding Ashley Stewart pageant Flammer has had her face plastered in store windows, magazines ads, and headline stories all over the internet but she appreciates its presence the most in her classroom. In an exclusive interview, the unlikely model talked to HelloBeautiful about her plans to expand her modeling career beyond her tenure and inspire others to be confident in the process. She went on to reveal that her lack of success in that competition alst prevented her from taking home her crown. “I didn’t make that, and I knew it was gonna be the same people that were judging that so I was like ‘They didn’t pick me before, why would they pick me now?” Commissioned by Ashley Stewart The deciding factor in her putting herself out there again was encouragement from her local store manager. An avid shopper with a reputation for having great personal style Flamer had become close with the person who often watch her twirl around the chain’s pink clad dressing rooms. “She said, ‘I think you should do it, just do it. I can wear that, because I look like that,” she said. She added that she wanted them to think, “That will look bomb on me.” Even with a huge campaign under her belt, a growing social media following and a clip of Loni Love yelping out her name on the internet, she has not been able to lock down a modeling agent, a task that is seemingly simpler for the young women in the shallower end of the plus-size pool. “I notice that a lot of the agencies who represent plus size models the models are on the smaller end,” she pointed out. “In the media they consider anything a size 10 and up, but their models are usually on the smaller end. They’re size 10 and size 12 they’re not your 14s and 16s and 18s,” she continued. “I definitely want to continue modeling, I am looking to sign and I’m hoping that will be a possibility for me, hopefully they can take me as I am.” If they don’t, we will. Tenisha Light-Caba Of Brooklyn Bleu Is Making High-End Vintage Jewelry Affordable For All

Source: Victoria Uwumarogie / HB From the moment I stepped in Brooklyn Bleu , I was impressed. Actually, make that the moment I grabbed the door handle. Even from outside, I could tell that I wasn’t stepping into your ordinary vintage jewelry spot. When I entered, I felt like embraced, not only by the woman who greeted me at the door, but also by the atmosphere. There were splashes of pink, lots of gold, and the sounds of women fawning over shining jewels. The woman behind this dream of a shopping experience is Tenisha Light-Caba. The entrepreneur, who stood in the midst of all of the excitement in a jean Fenty dress , lucite heels and her own vintage Chanel earrings and gold link bracelets fashioned into anklets, started the business in 2010. However, she has been selling vintage jewelry since she was a kid living in California. “I had rummage sales every weekend, making money selling my grandmother’s jewelry,” she told me. “Then it became my chore to clean another grandmother’s jewelry. One would let me make money at the rummage sales selling the jewelry right in front of the house. I would set up a little table, but I wasn’t selling lemonade, I was selling jewelry.” View this post on Instagram Show me Love, Keep all Those Other Vibes for Yourself! Wearing #chanel #vintage #lindaevangelista #1993 #chanelbelt @brooklynbleuny A post shared by Brooklyn Bleu (@brooklynbleuny) on Dec 17, 2018 at 3:11pm PST She’s long past the days of getting her pieces from her grandmother. Nowadays, Tenisha works with private collectors who’ve been in the business for decades to pull together her one-of-a-kind collection, which she’s been able to put in her new store located in The Oculus , otherwise known as Westfield World Trade Center in Manhattan. “I tend to like to work with the same people. This is how I’m able to get my hands on the good stuff. I take care of them, they take care of me,” she said. “They have a lot. They have more than what I could ever afford to buy. Where they get it from? Who knows.” Her collection has expanded greatly, taking her from her early beginnings of selling in a brownstone, moving on to Chelsea Market, to eventually having her own space, one of the few minority-owned businesses in the Oculus. “We first started our business in a historic brownstone in Brooklyn,” she said of her journey. “I’ve never had the space. I’ve usually worked at an artisan market. This is the biggest space I’ve ever had. This gives me a chance to really shine, have lighting and really make it my own.” It hasn’t been an easy journey, but it’s been a successful one. During her days working at markets like Artists & Fleas and Top Shop on 5th Avenue, Tenisha broke records for her sales. “I worked,” she said. “I put the work in. It’s been so many things that happened in the world over the past 10 years and in that time, I’ve had my business full time. I’m independently funded. I don’t have investors. Now I have payroll and I have employees.” Source: Victoria Uwumarogie / HB What you’ll find at the store is pieces dating back from the ’30s and ’40s. Items from big name fashion houses like Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel, as well as daintier, unique items from all over. The good news is, everything is affordable, but there are items specific to every wallet. For instance, she has inexpensive earrings and necklaces from the ’70s, her “Dainty” and “Re.Fresh” collections. They are old stock that she received from a collector who had a wholesale business in the 1970s, and she replated everything to give it a fresh look. They are being sold between the $20-$40 range. The wide-ranging prices are part of Tenisha’s hope to make people from all walks vintage fans — and welcome when they visit Brooklyn Bleu. “I want people to feel welcomed, to feel like they’re at home. I want them to feel comfortable and good — just as good when they leave,” she said. “That’s the experience they get when they walk through the door, that’s how people treat them, that’s courtesy. That’s being professional and knowing what you have to offer as well. I have to train and work really hard with my staff too so they can pass on that same experience.” She also wants people to know that Brooklyn Bleu will be flexible. If you get a piece and for some reason you need to return it (allergies, any other unexpected issue), she welcomes it back. Source: Victoria Uwumarogie / HB “If someone’s not happy with the piece, it doesn’t make me happy for them to have it,” she said. “I’d rather get it in the hands of someone who’s going to really enjoy it.” With that being said, it’s rare for such a thing to happen with Tenisha’s collection of pieces. You’ll understand when you step in the space and find yourself mesmerized by the statement necklaces, quirky rings, avante-garde earrings, delightful vintage mirrors and ornate bags. Especially at the cost. “It’s important to offer pieces that are accessible and vintage,” she said. “When I go to a place and it feels like everything is just too expensive, it’s like, ‘I thought I was making good money! I can’t even afford this.’ I didn’t ever want people to feel that in here — and they don’t. We have customers who take four and five pieces. Most customers take more than one item.” Brooklyn Bleu is now open and officially located at The Oculus World Trade Center: Church Street, New York, NY 10006

#NYFWNoir: Gina Edwards Partnered With Rebecca Minkoff To Give The Modern Day Working Woman Runway Style Nails

Source: John Lamparski / Getty Ahh, who doesn’t love runway lewks?! The dramatic presentation of the clothes, the precision of the sewing, and a first look to what’s to come. Edwards reassures that, “each design is on trend without being overbearing.” The beauty of using Kiss Nail Art Paint ($9.99, KISSusa.com ) is that you can paint an accent nail or all of your nails depending on what you want. Backstage, our favorite looks were the zebra and the plaid nails, so we’re sharing below, how to get the look. ZEBRA NAILS Source: KISS Nails / Courtesy of KISS Nails, Inc. Size your nails in advance, not as you go along. You will paint each of your accent nails with KISS Nail Art Paint to create the desired effect. Kevin Hart Walking But In “Excruciating Pain” After Car Crash

Source: Newspix / Getty Kevin Hart has a long road of recovery ahead of him. The actor and comedian is walking again after suffering sever back injuries in a car crash, but he is in excruciating pain. Reports TMZ : Sources connected to the comedian tell us that Kevin is, in fact, walking again — as Tiffany Haddish mentioned Friday at the Harper’s Bazaar ICONS event in NYC — but he’s not nearly as “good” as she made it seem. We’re told he’s walking slowly and gingerly at this point. We’re also told KH’s starting physical therapy this weekend at the hospital he’s currently being treated at. That’s great considering he just underwent surgery days ago. While he may be taking steps in his road to full health, make no mistake … we’re told Kevin is in excruciating pain as he heals, but that he’s also maintaining a relatively positive mood. Hart reportedly suffered three spinal fractures as a result of a crash (he was the passenger) invovling his 1970 Plymouth Barracuda in Malibu Hill. Hart reportedly bought the car as a birthday gift to himself in July.
