Source: Prince Williams / Getty Trina ‘s mother has passed away, TMZ confirmed. The Miami rapper’s mother, Vernessa “Nessa” Taylor died early Tuesday morning (Sept. 3) after a battle with cancer. She was 62. “Thank you all for your kind words and condolences regarding Trina’s mother. It truly gives the family some peace and comfort knowing that ‘Nessa’ lived such a fulfilling life filled with love and abundance,” Trina’s rep said in a statement. Trina and her family are asking for privacy during this difficult time. Taylor was known as a “pillar of her community,” a supporter of women an advocate for “self-love, confidence, and perseverance among women in general,” and the woman who helped shape her daughter into one of hip-hop’s most influential rappers and businesswomen. Trina recently paid tribute to her mom on the 2017 song “Mama” featuring Kelly Price . The song also appears on Trina’s recently released album The One . She gave the Recording Academy a behind-the-scenes look at the music video, which paid touching tribute to Taylor. “My mom was kinda sick when I was in the studio making this song, and I was in a really down place,” she told the Academy. “I called her on the phone, she wasn’t feeling so good, so that inspired the song. I just went into the studio with all these emotions … and that’s how it came out.” “Respect, admire, love your mom,” she added. “You only get one mom in the entire world. You can never, ever get another one. No matter what happens, one only comes your way, that’s a blessing.”
Though she is best known for her effortless vocals, singer Ari Lennox took time on Monday to address any of her social media followers who subscribe to anti-LGBTQ ideals. The S hea Butter Baby vocalist tweeted a series of thoughts in support of the LGBTQ community after an unknown situation prompted her to speak out. “I hate homophobic and transphobic people so much,” she began. Email Submit Lennox then used her platform to delve further into why she used the word hate to describe her feelings after her mentions began to blow up. “I am also aware of how strong of a word hate is. So buzz off. If you’re homophobic and transphobic idfwu,” she wrote. “Please if you don’t support [the] LGBTQ community, you don’t support me,” Lennox continued. “You don’t support my family and the people I love. So all you delusional and fake-religious/self-righteous weirdos unfollow and unsubscribe.” “To be gay is beautiful. It is natural. One doesn’t have to experience trauma to be gay,” Lennox writes, dismantling the argument that anyone who is LGBTQ came to be so because of some type of sexual perversion. “Yes I believe people are born that way. Yes I hate people who hate gay people. If there is a God I believe he made us in his image and made no mistakes.” I didn’t hear God say ANY of what you homophobic and transphobic and bigots be talm bout — Ari Lennox (@AriLennox) September 3, 2019 The D.C. native went on to address the “gay agenda,” a thoughtless theory which suggests that the media and public figures are working together to tout LGBTQ ideals. “I don’t believe in “Gay Agenda.” No agenda can alter what is already innate. No religion or media or bully can convince me that true love is unnatural,” Lennox wrote. But her argument became personal once she shared her experience of watching her sister be ostracized by family members for marrying a woman. “I have family members that didn’t show up to meh own sister’s wedding because she married a woman. You can’t support your own flesh and blood because of unhealthy condition from religion and media. People really live their short lives in a mental prison, she continued. “People were gay from the beginning of time and will be long after we are gone,” she wrote in her last tweet. Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news. ( Terms and conditions ). After her tweets went viral, Lennox logged onto Twitter on Tuesday to respond to the criticism she faced by those who believe otherwise. “Also I’m not an atheist buy obviously if you church people feel so bothered by my views, why the hell you listening to my raunchy secular music? Once again foh” “going out of your way to express how you don’t agree with someone’s SEXUAL PREFERENCE is simply uncalled for…People love every opportunity to insert the STRAIGHT agenda,” she wrote. “It’s mind boggling how the media and religion has promoted A whole straight agenda for years and y’all can’t take an INCH of any type of diversity and spice on your programming.” Lennox’s thoughts remind us of the ways in which we dehumanize and dishonor one another. And as a Black woman, the recalling of watching family member’s withhold their support for their LGBTQ family members is not a singular event. There are so many of us with mother’s father’s, aunties, uncles, cousins, whom have had to live a double life in order to shield themselves from disdain all because of who they love. Until we can love and respect one another in dismantling internalized notions of respectability and white supremacy, we will never truly be free. Source: Cinzia Camela/WENN.com / WENN As the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20, and when Nate Parker looks back on the controversy he was previously embroiled in over past allegations of rape, he feels he could have handled things a lot differently. While promoting his newest film and perhaps his comeback project, American Skin , the 39-year-old took time out at a press conference for it to apologize for being “tone deaf” in his response to backlash over the old allegations . In 2016, information came out about a woman claiming Parker and former wrestling teammate, Jean McGianni Celestin, raped her while they were students at Penn State University in 1999. The actor always maintained his innocence and was found not guilty of all the charges against him (Celestin was found guilty), but he wasn’t apologetic about the circumstances he put the accuser in at the time (including having her identity exposed when they were in school), or the fact that she killed herself in 2012. All of the drama that encircled him over his past happened right before the Me Too Movement took full form, but his career still took a hit. The film he directed and was promoting at the time, Birth of a Nation , which was about Nat Turner, tanked at the box office and didn’t receive any awards season love after being a critical darling at Sundance Film Festival. “The last three years have been such a learning experience for me,” Parker said. “Three years ago I was pretty tone deaf to the realities of certain situations that were happening in the climate. And I’ve had a lot of time to think about that, and I’ve learned a lot from it. And being tone deaf, there were a lot of people that were hurt in my response, in the way I approached things. I apologize to those people.” “I’ve learned, I’m continuing to learn,” he added. “I’m 39 years old now. Hopefully I have a long way to go. The hope is that I can continue taking the wisdom from people who care enough…and help me to be introspective about where I am and what I’ve been through.” Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Close Thank you for subscribing! Please be sure to open and click your first newsletter so we can confirm your subscription. Email Submit Parker certainly seems to have come a long way since he can admit that he wasn’t sensitive enough in his response to everything. At the time, while on the defense, he said there was nothing he felt like he needed to apologize for . “I was falsely accused…I went to court…I was vindicated,” he said in a 2016 interview with 60 Minutes. “I feel terrible that this woman isn’t here…her family had to deal with that, but as I sit here, an apology is—no.” Glad to hear he had a change of heart. Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news. ( Terms and conditions ). As for American Skin , Parker directed and stars in the film as an ex-Marine who takes justice into his own hands after seeing his unarmed son killed by police. Despite the personal drama that hindered his first feature film as director, he still doesn’t plan on shying away from telling important, tough stories. “I’m still learning and growing and still feeling the need to make films that speak to things that need to change in our country and the world,” he told the AP . “And this topic was very dear to me.” This story was originally published on MadameNoire.com . Source: George Rose / Getty Ladies and gentlemen, it’s officially the end of an era! While many fashionistas loved browsing the racks at Forever 21 , we’re afraid that the retail giant may have to take a loss and file for bankruptcy. What does this mean for fans of the brand you may ask? Many locations may have to close their doors! According to Bloomberg , the company has been working tirelessly to avoid bankruptcy. “The company has been in talks for additional financing and working with a team of advisers to help it restructure its debt, but negotiations with possible lenders have so far stalled,” Bloomberg reports. “Focus has thus shifted toward securing a potential debtor-in-possession loan to take the company into Chapter 11, they said, even as some window remains to strike a last-minute deal that keeps it out of court.” Naturally, a bankruptcy filing would give the retailer a little bit of room to close down underperforming stores and help rebuild the business. However, this move may affect some of the biggest mall management companies. Bloomberg reports that if Forever 21 closes a significant number of stores, landlords such as Simon Property Group and Brookfield Property Partners (two of the largest mall owners in the country) may have trouble filling the vacancies. Most people blame fast fashion brands such as Fashion Nova and Pretty Little Thing for the decline of many stores. Some people also blame the fact that the brand has stolen images of hip hop stars and have even been accused of sending of diet bars with plus size orders as the culprit for its demise. While this all may be true, we can’t deny that consumer shopping habits change like the wind. In order for retail locations to stay ahead of the game, they must provide shoppers with what they need. While there is no word on the retailer closing any of its 800+ locations in Asia, Europe, Latin America and the U.S. at the moment, it hasn’t stopped shoppers from anticipating the inevitable. This move is definitely troubling for business, but Forever 21 shoppers are green with delight! The possibility of stores closing means one thing- closeout sales! In the meantime, Black Twitter has been on one since the news broke. Here are some of the funniest and real reactions: 1. Been walking around in forever 21 leggings with my ass showing through. When Rebecca Crews learned that her husband Terry Crews had been unfaithful, she didn’t find out in some salacious manner. Her story begins the way that many stories of this nature begin: with women’s intuition. “I didn’t have pictures. I didn’t have some skeezer calling me,” the mother of five shared. “It was purely this internal knowledge that we were disconnected.” During season three of OWN’s “Black Love” series, the former reality stars get extremely vulnerable with viewers as they discuss Terry’s addiction to pornography and adulterous affair — something the actor broke down and confessed to his wife after two decades of marriage. Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news. ( Terms and conditions ). “I was like, ‘Okay God, I told her. So can we recoup? Can we start again?’” a teary-eyed Terry recalls in one episode. “But she said don’t come home.” It was a difficult decision that led to a trial separation, but it was one of the best decision’s Rebecca has ever made. “I wasn’t having no parts of reconciliation until my husband came home from rehab,” Rebecca told MadameNoire. Though he was in recovery for addiction to pornography, Rebecca believes that her husband also struggled with another form of addiction. “There is an addiction to the thrill of doing something that is forbidden. Some people are insecure and they want other people to desire them,” she said. “They have this validation issue and there was some of that with my spouse.” When Terry returned from rehab, he was like a different person — much to the astonishment of his wife of twenty-two years. “He was very humble, broken, apologetic,” said Rebecca, “He really had the desire to try and be a better person. He just blew me away with his sincere, religious attempts to prove to me that he was a better person and was going to stay a better person, that he was going to fight this demon with everything in him.” Though the former cosmetologist admits that it took her years to fully trust her husband again, his fervent dedication to the process of getting well eventually won her over. “That’s all that you can ask of somebody is that they choose to get better for themselves. You are then the beneficiary of that,” the Michigan native shared. “There’s no remedy for a guy who doesn’t want to change — except to exit. That can be hard to believe when they are really showing you, ‘We don’t matter enough for me to be different.” While her story had a happy ending, the Michigan native cautioned women against leaving their partners simply to get a reaction out of them. “You have to mean it. It’s not like ‘Oh, I’m going to pretend I’m throwing him out and I’ll see if it acts right after that.’ No, you’ve got to be ready to go alone,” Rebecca advised. “For some reason, I had hit that breaking point and the breaking point for me was 22 years in. I had no idea that my husband would turn his life around, but I had to make the choice that was best for me. And I say that I lucked out because he turned out to be one of the better ones because he shifted his perspective.” Terry’s stint in rehab did not just breathe new life to his dying marriage, it freed him from the shackles of emotional bondage otherwise known as being a Black man in America. “No one tells a little Black boy he can just fall apart and cry,” said Rebecca. “I never saw that man cry. I lost a baby. 6 month pregnant and he didn’t cry. He didn’t cry and I was like, ‘There’s something wrong with you.’” The recovery process, however, caused the floodgates to open. “While he was going through recovery, he cried almost every day,” the former reality television personality shared. “Many men are out of touch with their emotions. They’re not even wondering ‘Why am I doing this?’ That’s something my husband said that he had as an awakening during rehab that he had been kind of walking through life relatively asleep at the wheel, just allowing himself to be pushed and pulled by circumstances and impulsive behavior and never questioning why. As those things began to manifest through the therapy, he cried. He cried all the time.” It’s never easy being the partner of an addict and Rebecca believes that in some ways, she unknowingly enabled Terry in his addiction. “There’s a degree of blindness to the fact that you’re dealing with an addiction. You’re just asking yourself, ‘Why do they act like that? Why do they act like that?’” she shared. “There was a time when Terry was — and I believe this was a reflection of his addiction — he would be irresponsible with our money. I struggled all the time when I had to make calls to one of our creditors, basically pleading for time because he had done something dumb with the money.” She went on: “I remember thinking, stupidly, at the time, that I wasn’t enabling and that I was just keeping things cool so that I didn’t end up getting put out. But looking back, I wish I had let him suffer the consequences of that decision. But because we were all riding on that boat, I think that unwittingly, I was responsible for letting it continue because I didn’t see an alternative other than packing my kids and getting out.” Hindsight, of course, is 20/20 and knowing what she now knows, Rebecca advises anyone dealing with an addicted loved one to allow them to face the music sooner rather than later. “With an addict, I just have to say, the sooner you can put your foot down with them, the sooner you can have peace. And that’s one of the hardest things for us as loving spouses to do is to put that foot and don’t move it,” she said. “Do not tolerate behavior that puts you at ease for the moment but then leaves you in the lurch in the long run.” She adds that this doesn’t mean that you immediately move to divorce; however, things will not change until difficult decisions are made. “If you’re not going to be present, then maybe you should go. If you’re not going to be responsible, we can’t be together. And that doesn’t mean that you go file your papers. There’s always a timing you can give people to get their act together, but toleration is a code word for codependence.” Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Close Thank you for subscribing! Back in March, a judge ruled that Rob Kardashian did not have to pay any child support and that he would take care of Dream’s needs when she is in his care. It was also ruled that they would split her expenses 50/50. She has a similar arrangement with Tyga. “They had an agreement, each of them would share custody and pay for their own stuff, their own childcare, nannies, food, and expenses for King,” a close source told HollywoodLife.
