Chance The Rapper On R. Kelly’s Alleged Victims: ‘I Didn’t Value Their Stories Because They Were Black Women’

Source: Chelsea Lauren / Getty A clip featuring Chance The Rapper is making waves on the Internet as the finale of “ Surviving R. Kelly” dropped on Saturday night. In a never-aired interview for Cassius , former Interactive One VP Jamilah Lemieux sat down with the Grammy winner in May 2018 to discuss a range of topics, including his past collaboration with the Pied Piper. READ:  #SurvivingRKelly: Five Emotions You’ll Experience Watching The New Lifetime Docuseries In it, Chance, a Chicago-native, apologized for working with the “I Believe I Can Fly” singer and explained why he did it at the time. “We’re programmed to really be hypersensitive to Black male oppression. It’s just prevalent in all media, and when you see n***as getting beat up by the police, it’s men,” Chance says in the interview clip. “That’s a scene you see…slavery for a lot of people, they envision men in chains, he said. Adding, “But Black women are exponentially a higher oppressed and violated group of people just in comparison to the whole world. Maybe I didn’t care because I didn’t value the accusers’ stories because they were Black women. ” pic.twitter.com/0J46S5YOkW — Chance The Rapper (@chancetherapper) January 6, 2019 Rolling Stone had previously reported that Chance simply said, “I didn’t value the accusers’ stories because they were Black women.” However, Chance clapped back on Saturday night saying the quote was taken out context because it didn’t take into account everything he had said before that in the interview. In a note he shared on social media, the 25-year-old explained his controversial quote: “The quote was taken out of context. The truth is any of us who ever ignored the R Kelly stories, or ever believed he was being setup/attacked by the system (as Black men often are) were doing so at the detriment of Black women and girls. I apologize to all of his survivors for working with him and for taking this long to speak out.” pic.twitter.com/bqbKlsDA9l — Chance The Rapper (@chancetherapper) January 6, 2019 Anyone mentioning that I have black women in my family is deliberately missing the point. Regardless of the proximity of beneficial BW in your life, or being black yourself, we are all capable of subconsciously discrediting BW and their stories because its indoctrinated. — Chance The Rapper (@chancetherapper) January 6, 2019 Even with Chance explaining himself, many Black women still flocked to Twitter to express how his quotes made them feel. And the results were polarizing: Some condemned the rapper, while others commended him for being able to admit he was wrong. Last thing before I dip: I'm glad Chance The Rapper told the truth. I'm tired of Black Men and White folks gaslighting us. They don't believe us BECAUSE we are Black Women. He said it outright–stated a nasty truth that is killing us in every arena from childbirth to DV. — Octavia Butler knew… (@Nikyatu) January 6, 2019 What the headline should have read is: Despite Chance the Rapper having a black daughter and fiancé he discounted the victim’s stories because they were black women. He now regrets making music with a sexual predator because it is bad for his brand. https://t.co/9TMFiNqkdn — Ariel Hazzard (@ArielHazzard) January 6, 2019 A photo of Chance the Rapper with Jermaine Maxey from June 2018. Jerhonda Pace confirmed Maxey is the guy who recruited her and sought her out on behalf of Kelly. She also said Maxey engaged in sex acts with the girls and Kelly. pic.twitter.com/VbhaLtB5Hw — AshleyRay Grande (@arayyay) January 6, 2019 Chance The Rapper’s drummer is the brother of the girl R. Kelly peed on. Bye Chance. — J. Holiday’s Gucci Jacket (@eleven8) January 6, 2019 he said “i didn’t believe them because they were black women” alluding to the stereotype that nobody ever believes black women. he’s admitting that he fed into that and overlooked their stories by working w Kelly when he shouldn’t have. and now he’s owning up — tal (@whatsatalia) January 6, 2019 I could cancel chance the rapper but I wasn’t listening to his music anyway pic.twitter.com/Ee7MZZit0S — -jacquees hive (@__SoulFlower) January 6, 2019 “I didn’t value the accusers stories. Because they were BW. I made a mistake.” – Chance The Rapper admitting his misogynoir. He sounds like any dude I grew up w/ in church. Something familiar about “good church boy” w/ virulent misogynoir that becomes quotidian. #SurvivingRKelly —

Pied Piper of Paperwork: R. Kelly Threatening To Sue Everybody Over Doc He Didn’t Watch

Source: R. Kelly (aka Robert Sylvester Kelly) 25 Strong: The BET Silver Anniversary Celebration Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles, California- 26.10.05 Featuring: R. Kelly (aka Robert Sylvester Kelly) Where: Los Angeles, California, United States When: 27 Oct 2005 Credit: David Livingston / WENN R. Kelly’s name is the equivalent of hot garbage after the airing of Lifetime’s 6-part documentary, Surviving R. Kelly . Despite reportedly not actually watching any of the doc, the R&B crooner is threatening to sue those involved. Good luck with that. Reports TMZ : Sources in day-to-day contact with R. Kelly tell TMZ, the singer is “disgusted” by the series, which makes shocking allegations against him including sex with various underage girls, physical abuse and mind control. People interviewed say he’s running a sex cult.  The sources say R. Kelly views the series as a “vendetta” against him by producers and others who have hated him throughout his professional career. We’re told R. Kelly’s team downloaded him on the various people who appeared on the show and he claims he doesn’t even know half of them. He claims the other half hate him for various personal and professional reasons. We doubt the “I don’t even know her” defense would work in court. But then again, the crooner has gotten away with his alleged abuse for years. Nevertheless, a source told TMZ,  “He’s going to sue everybody who had anything to do with this.” We also doubt that R’uh really has the coin to “sue everybody” now that the jig is up and those concerts keep getting canceled . — Photo: WENN.com

Barbershop Books Empowers Black Boys To Read

A former educator is on a mission to promote literacy among Black youth. Through his program Barbershop Books, entrepreneur Alvin Irby is bringing literature to barbershops across the country to inspire young African American boys to read, the Tuscaloosa News reported. “Once you figure out how students identify,” @AlvinIrby says, “then you can begin to craft [reading] experiences that are customized to who they are and what's most important to them.” Read more: https://t.co/EH3G0IisNt #ThrowbackThursday — Barbershop Books (@BarbershopBooks) January 3, 2019 The inspiration for the program came nearly 10 years ago when Irby saw one of his students at the barbershop, the news outlet writes. The student—who struggled with reading—was idle while waiting for his haircut and Irby thought that would have been the perfect time for him to work on his literacy skills. A few years later Irby—who taught in Harlem and the Bronx—moved forward with the launch of his organization. Irby believes that representation is everything and it’s important for Black youth to see themselves reflected in the literature that they consume. Through the program—which was created for youngsters between the ages of 4 and 8—the young readers provide suggestions for the types of books that they want to see in barbershops. Irby then ships those books to barbershops throughout the country. The program also allows companies, nonprofits, and individuals to sponsor book stations at barbershops within their communities. “I think many children think learning isn’t for them because they’re forced to choose between who they are and school. But you can be who you are and still be brilliant. You can like rap and be a great reader,” Irby told the news outlet. “Barbershops are like a cultural center for black males. For a lot of boys the barbers are a stable male role model and black boys go there regularly.” Since its inception five years ago, Barbershop Books has expanded into nearly 40 cities and is included in 120 barbershops. There has been a major effort to change the narrative surrounding Black youth and literacy. A group of fifth-graders at the Truesdell Education Campus in Washington, D.C. launched a book club after a Black student shared that he struggled with reading because he didn’t see himself reflected in the characters of the books that he was given. Barack Obama has made his debut at No. 22 on Billboard's Hot R&B Songs chart https://t.co/NrYGOWq1rR — USA TODAY Life (@usatodaylife) January 4, 2019 The song, dubbed “One Last Time (44 Remix),” debuted at No. 22 on the chart. The track features Obama, singer BeBe Winans , and Hamilton actor Christopher Jackson . On the song—which is about former President George Washington leaving his presidential seat—Obama recites Washington’s farewell address. “I anticipate with pleasing expectation that retreat in which I promise myself to realize, without alloy, the sweet enjoyment of partaking, in the midst of my fellow-citizens, the benign influence of good laws under a free government, the ever-favorite object of my heart, and the happy reward, as I trust, of our mutual cares, labors, and dangers,” says Obama. The song is a part of Miranda’s project Hamildrops which puts a spin on different songs from the musical. He launched the project last year and some of the proceeds are given to different nonprofit organizations. Obama has been a long-time supporter of the Hamilton movement. He took his family to see the show on Broadway and in 2016 the cast performed at the White House. His Billboard accomplishment comes just weeks after he shared his favorite songs of 2018 list which included music from The Carters , Leon Bridges , J. Cole , Cardi B , Janelle Monae , and others.
