Leslie Nielsen Remembered By David Zucker

‘Airplane!’ and ‘Naked Gun’ producer/writer/director pays tribute to the actor, who died Sunday. By Gil Kaufman Leslie Nielsen Photo: Michael Ochs Archives/ Getty Images Relationships of Hollywood movie sets tend to be shallow, short-lived and mostly a put-on. But when producer/writer/director David Zucker, his brother, Jerry, and their partner Jim Abrahams cast Leslie Nielsen in their 1979 disaster spoof “Airplane!,” they had no idea that they would not only provide a second life to a hard-working actor’s career, but gain a true friend in the process. (For photos of the late actor throughout his career, click here.) David Zucker penned a loving tribute to Nielsen — who died on Sunday at age 84 due to complications from pneumonia — for the Hollywood Reporter on Monday, paying homage to a man he said he was barely aware of when he cast him in the classic comedy, but who came to be one of his favorite people. “It was summer 1979, a full three weeks before the start of shooting for ‘Airplane!’ and our casting director had finally had enough. Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, Peter Graves and now Leslie … who?” Zucker said of the career actors who’d been tapped to lampoon their on-screen personas for the film. “At least audiences had heard of the first three, but this guy — it was true, when it came time to select an actor to play Dr. Rumack, my brother Jerry, Jim Abrahams and I remembered: ‘This one guy, he’s been in hundreds of television shows, and I think he played the captain of the Poseidon. What’s his name?’ Our research revealed that the actor’s name was Leslie Nielsen. Jim, Jerry and I were thrilled when he agreed to meet, not because he was ‘funny’ but because of his long r

Leslie Nielsen. Shirley, he will be missed.” Swapping out jokes for affection, “The L Word” actress Marlee Matlin wrote , “A lovely man and acquaintance passed away today – Leslie Nielsen. What a lovely, funny, talented man. He will be missed. ‘Glee’ Bully May Never Come Out, Max Adler Says

‘High school, that’s kind of your world and Karofsky’s fear is for people to find out who he is,’ he speculates to MTV News. By Kara Warner Max Adler Photo: MTV News McKinley High’s resident bully Dave Karofsky is causing a whole lot of trouble on “Glee.” Tuesday night’s (November 23) episode was especially painful to watch, what with his creepy klepto move with Kurt’s wedding-cake topper and that unbridled violence. It’s enough to make us wonder: What the heck is going to happen to him? Max Adler, the actor behind Karofsky , recently told MTV News he has some ideas about what might become of his character. “He could join New Directions, he could be a glee-clubber,” Adler offered. “Of course … he will maybe think about suicide,” he added. “Just because that’s going on in the nation right now, but I don’t know if they’re going to touch on that and go that deep. “I don’t know if there is any redemption [for Karofsky],” Adler continued. “I don’t know if he’s ever going to come out . In high school, that’s kind of your world and Karofsky’s fear is for people to find out who he is.” The “Glee” star emphasized that as far as his character’s arc is concerned, he really doesn’t know what’s in store but he’s glad to be making an impact onscreen. “I’m really just so thrilled to be able to play this part, and at this point in time in our nation and the world, even. I feel like I’m representing such a large group of people and it’s a crucial time. I don’t know where it’s going to go. I want it to be a great message,” Adler said. “I think I want him to have redemption and to eventually realize that people are tolerant and not prejudiced and there’s no ignorance and that he can come out and feel safe. I think that would be a great message,” he said hopefully. “But it depends where [creator] Ryan Murphy and all of them want to take him.” Where do you hope the “Glee” story line will take Karofsky? Charlie Sheen Text Messages Reveal Plans to "Get Ball Rollin" on Payments to Capri Anderson

Advantage Team Capri? While Charlie Sheen and Capri Anderson wrestle back and forth in the media and in the courtroom – the latest development in the battle between this sitcom and porn star revolves around the former suing the latter for extortion – TMZ has uncovered a slew of text messages that back up at least two of Anderson’s claims. In an interview with ABC that aired yesterday, Capri said Sheen contacted her the day after he allegedly went berzerk inside a NYC hotel room and offered her $20,000 to not tell her side of the story. She’s also cited an expensive purse the actor destroyed during his rampage on the night of October 25. If the following text messages are to believed, exchanges between these two soon after this incident took place do at least confirm these aspects of Anderson’s story. As first published by TMZ , we present a series of texts between Anderson and Sheen from the day after their infamous first day together: Sheen : “All I need is an Acct number etc and I will wire u 20k if u think that will cover everything … I really feel bad, u are as cool and sexy and as sweet and fun and friendly as they get!” Anderson : “u trashed my brand new prada purse dude not cool – how u managed to rip the strap off and put 2 holes in it is beyond me.” Sheen : “Don’t worry about our mutual friends, deal with me directly and I promise u kind lady, all will be restored and set straight.” Anderson : “Yes u can call me.

Fantasia in Court: I Aborted Antwaun Cook’s Baby

Fantasia Barrino may possess an incredible voice, but she’s known more for her scandal-filled personal life than anything else these days. The latest bombshell to drop from this former American Idol champion arrives courtesy of her recent court testimony, as Fantastia was a witness in boyfriend Antwaun Cook’s divorce proceedings against ex-wife Paula yesterday. Under oath, Barrino reportedly stated she got pregnant by Cook and had an abortion. In August, Cook admitted he had been sleeping with the singer, but said Fantasia was unaware he was still married. That was the focus of a line of questioning in front of a Mecklenburg County Court judge yesterday, as Paula Cook’s attorney pressed Barrino on whether or not she knew her boyfriend was still living with his wife during their relationship. Because reporters were barred from the courtroom, it’s unknown exactly what exchange led to Fantasia’s admission, but multiple sources told Radar Online she confirmed the abortion and said it took place around the time of her summer suicide attempt . Antwaun and Paula are in court because they were unable to settle on terms of a divorce through private mediation. Meanwhile, it’s still conceivable that Paula could sue Fantasia over the unusual Alienation of Affection law, which North Carolina still has on the books and which states that an abandoned spouse can file lawsuit against the party responsible for the dissolution of a marriage.

Charlie Sheen Files Extortion Lawsuit Against Capri Anderson

Yesterday, Capri Anderson had her day in front of the camera, giving multiple interviews to ABC and explaining her side of the infamous night she spent in NYC with Charlie Sheen. Now, the actor wants to have his day in court, as he’s filed a lawsuit against the porn star, alleging she tried to extort him for $1 million in exchange for silence over his drug-fueled rampage that October evening. “This case involves a shakedown and extortion of the internationally known actor and celebrity Charlie Sheen… by an opportunist pornographic film star and publicity-hungry scam artist,” reads the lawsuit filed yesterday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The document goes on to say that Anderson (real name: Christina Walsh) “fabricated a sensational tale about being assaulted, battered and held against will.” Capri most recently claimed she was paid $3,500 to be Sheen’s date for the night, witnessed the sitcom star snorting a white substance and then locked herself in a bathroom after he wrapped his hands around her neck and threw a lamp in her direction. Sheen states Anderson contacted him soon after the night in question and asked for at least $1 million. When he “refused to succumb to Walsh’s extortionate and illegal demands,” according to the suit, her reps contacted the Aspen authorities that prosecuted Sheen for domestic violence and attempted to have his probation revoked. The lawsuit, filed by attorney Marty Singer, also accuses Anderson of stealing Sheen’s $165,000 Patek Philippe watch. This is all pretty much a case of He Said/She Said/They Both Suck. Which side are you on?

Jeremy Renner Talks Breakout Year, ‘Mission: Impossible’ And ‘Avengers’

‘Hurt Locker’ star is one of the actors we’re most thankful for in 2010. By Eric Ditzian Tom Cruise performs a stunt in Dubai for “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: Barcroft/Fame Pictures This time of year puts MTV News into a thankful spirit, as we look back at the actors and filmmakers whose work has kept our hearts warm through the winter months and has made us sweat with joy during the summer season. And so each year, we give our thanks. In the past, we’ve feted Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Reynolds and Quentin Tarantino . Thankful Week 2010 kicks off with a chat with Jeremy Renner, because his accomplishments over the past 12 months are not only impressive, but richly deserved. This year, his breakout turn in “The Hurt Locker” landed him at the Oscars with a Best Actor nomination, one of nine the Iraq war flick nabbed. Casting directors soon came a-calling. Having already signed up for Ben Affleck’s “The Town” (a role that led to some early Oscar buzz once again), Paramount tapped Renner to star alongside Tom Cruise in the resurrection of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. And this summer, the 39-year-old found himself at Comic-Con, standing besides the likes of Downey and Samuel L. Jackson, after being cast as Hawkeye in “The Avengers,” Marvel Studios’ upcoming superhero all-star flick. Mission, accomplished. These days, Renner is stationed in Dubai, where’s he’s pulling wicked stunts alongside Cruise in “Mission.” During a break from shooting, he called up MTV News to chat about his crazy year, his current production and why he’s so excited to get busy with “Avengers.” MTV : Congratulations on the stellar year. You start off the year with an Oscar nomination, you’re in “The Town,” you land “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and “The Avengers.” Does 2010 feel like a landmark year for you? Jeremy Renner : Over the last 20 years, it certainly is one of the bigger ones. It’s been a tremendous year. I feel very lucky in some ways and ready in other ways. I couldn’t be more blessed. I’m just excited to get to work. MTV : You’d been around and respected in the industry for a while, but you hadn’t notched that true breakout role until “Hurt Locker.” Were you starting to think it wasn’t going to happen? Renner : Well, I felt pretty happy over the decade working so much and getting to do some great films. It’s just to be able to do more and stretch and grow as an artist. It never felt like there was a timeline. I was ecstatic about where I was over the last 10 years. I’m almost 40, but I don’t look 40, and I don’t play 40, and I’m not going to for a while! MTV : Has there been one surreal point over the last year that kind of encapsulates everything for you? Renner : That’s almost every day, brother, for the last year. I say to my friends, “Is this real? Is this really happening?” I constantly pinch myself, because I can’t believe I’m in Dubai shooting “Mission: Impossible.” I embrace all of it, even the negative things that come along with this success. MTV : What’s been negative? Renner : I’m a pretty private individual, and I like to stay private. And I’m pretty free-spirited and pretty giving, and I get taken advantage of, just being too nice sometimes. It’s nice to go to Starbucks for a coffee, but it gets difficult when you have to have 19 conversations to get a cup of coffee. People are usually very respectful, but sometimes I don’t want to chat. It’s a wonderfully high-class problem. I just have to be conscious of what I do and what I say and where I go. I have to be careful about speaking off the cuff. I do have a mouth on me. MTV : I imagine standing up at Comic-Con next to all those guys was fairly surreal. What was going through your head at that point? Renner : That’s bananas. That’s bananas for everybody, for Robert Downey and Sam Jackson. You can never get used to that unless you’re Bono. Maybe he’s not used to that. It’s a strange thing, having 7,000 people scream at you, whether they love you or they hate you. I don’t know, it could have been half and half. MTV : Come on, the fans have embraced you! Renner : Yeah, I’m pretty lucky about that. But it’s intense! MTV : What’s been the biggest difference for you professionally since “Hurt Locker”? Is there less for you to prove in auditions? Are you getting the offers you didn’t before? Renner : Not having to prove anything — that’s been around for a while. Within the industry, that awareness has been around, which has been great. But now things happen faster and they happen more frequently. I’m attached now to big franchise movies. “Mission: Impossible” happened so quickly. And then “The Avengers.” This is going to be the next 10 years of my life. That’s strange, because I’m used to moving on and going to the next movie. MTV : And now you’re hanging out with Tom Cruise in Dubai. Renner : I go to work, and I can’t wait to learn from him. I just got to see a little teaser reel from the first couple months I’ve been filming. It was crazy. MTV : What’s the craziest stunt you’ve had to do? Renner : Everything. I haven’t gotten to work too much in terms of acting stuff, but the stunts have been insane. Tom has been doing loads. He’s crazy, that guy. It’s unbelievable. He’s fearless. He’s great to watch. He inspires me to want to be better. I’m training in the gym and working out and fighting and doing everything I can to try and keep up. I’m doing hand-to-hand combat, Muay Thai and kung fu and learning how to take someone out quickly. I need to look like I know what I’m doing! MTV : Well, we’re very thankful that “Mission” is coming back, and we’re very, very thankful “Avengers” is finally happening. Renner : I was just texting with Downey before I called you. MTV : Has there been a lot of communication between all you guys? Renner : We did a creative meeting with everyone months ago before everyone took off. We met with [director] Joss [Whedon] and the cast and Marvel, just in terms of the script and where we want it to go. It was a little powwow. It feels like a very collaborative effort. Right now we’re off and dividing and conquering, but soon we’ll link up and get the rest of the guys and work on that. I’m very thankful for everyone I get to work with. It’s a tremendous time in my life. Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long.
