Casey Affleck Oscar Win: Slammed By Brie Larson, Twitter

There’s no contest with regard to the most memorable moment from the 2017 Academy Awards , That title goes to the jaw-dropping “Steve Harvey moment” that ended the night, as presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly announced La La Land as Best Picture , when the award actually belonged to Moonlight. But while that epic goof-up might be grabbing the majority of today’s headlines, it wasn’t the only controversial moment surrounding one of the night’s top prizes. Casey Affleck took home the Best Actor Oscar for his heart-wrenching performance in Manchester By the Sea, but not everyone was thrilled to see the 41-year-old step out from under his older brother’s shadow. The dark cloud of some heinous sexual harassment accusations loomed large over Affleck’s Oscar campaign, and many felt the actor should be removed from consideration as a result. The alleged incidents took place in 2010, while Affleck was directing the mockumentary film I’m Still Here with his then-brother-in-law, Joaquin Phoenix. The matter was settled out of court, but Affleck’s accusers maintain that he abused his power and persistently subjected them to harassment and other inappropriate behavior. As is customary, Affleck’s award was presented by Brie Larson, who took home the Best Actress prize for Room at last year’s awards. Larson played a sexual assault survivor in the film and she’s been an outspoken advocate for victims’ rights throughout her career. Needless to say, the Academy’s decision to put her in a position where she would be presenting an award to an alleged sexual predator didn’t sit well with many viewers. Larson’s apparent disdain for Affleck, however, was widely praised: Casey Affleck Wins Best Actor Many noted that Larson didn’t applaud when Affleck received his award, and it’s being widely interpreted as the actress’ way of subtly protesting the win.  “Y’all made Brie Larson, an advocate for sexual assault survivors, present Casey Affleck, a sexual predator, with an Oscar,” tweeted one viewer. Another wrote simply: “BRIE LARSON NOT CLAPPING IS MY HERO” Affleck’s nomination sparked countless debates about where the arts community should draw the line in terms of behavior so inexcusable that it should end a career. That debate will likely rage on following his win last night. But at least those who were outraged by Affleck’s victory can take solace in knowing that however subtle her understated her show of disapproval may have been, Brie Larson made her feelings known on the night’s biggest stage. Bill Paxton: Mourned in Very Cool Way by Storm Chasers

At the time of his stunning death over the weekend , Bill Paxton was starring in Training Day, a lackluster drama on CBS. Over the course of his impressive career, the actor was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards due to his performance on HBO’s Big Love. To many, however, Paxton will be best remembered for his role in 1996’s Twister, an action movie in which Paxton starred opposite Helen Hunt as a professional storm chaser. It is against this backdrop that hundreds of real-life storm chasers paid tribute to Paxton on Sunday. They spelled out the veteran actor’s initials (“BP”) using GPS coordinates on a map across the “tornado alley” in Kansas and Oklahoma. The “tornado alley” boundaries are not clearly defined, but it spreads across 19 states. According to John Wetter, who works with the National Weather Service, storm chasers have never before spelled out the initials of a non –storm chaser before. But the gesture symbolizes what kind of influence Paxton and Twister had on this profession. “There are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of meteorologists today – myself included – who were impacted by the movie Twister and the role Bill played in that,” Wetter told the Associated Press, adding: “Twister was kind of the first time in a mass media place the meteorologist became cool, if only for a little while.” Paxton passed away on Saturday following complications from heart surgery. It is believed he suffered a stroke. “A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker,” his rep said in a statement soon afterward. “Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family’s wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father.” The actor is survived by his wife, Louise Newbury, and two children James and Lydia. He was honored at the 89th Annual Academy Awards during the In Memoriam segment on Sunday night, although not in the video itself because his death took place just 24 hours before the show aired. Said Jennier Aniston, staving off tears, upon introducing the In Memoriam photo gallery and clip snow: Tonight, as we celebrate together, we also take a moment to mourn the many legends we lost this past year. Whether they were a musical prince leading the revolution on a concert stage or a movie princess leading the rebellion in a galaxy far, far away, a force of nature in front of the camera or a force driving it, each and every one was a cherished member of our Hollywood family. As was beloved actor and friend who left us just yesterday, Bill Paxton. All were loved and all will be missed. Amen. For Discussion: Was Denzel Washington Robbed At The 2017 Oscars?

Spike Lee And Russell Simmons Say The Academy Made A Mistake Not Giving Denzel An Oscar For Fences As predicted by many, Denzel Washington lost out on his Best Male Actor In A Lead Role Oscar Sunday night to Casey Affleck , whose movie “Manchester By The Sea” seemed like another boonies of Boston working class movie produced by Matt Damon and Ben AFfleck to us… Affleck was gracious in his acceptance and acknowledged that he learned his craft by watching Denzel. Two of our culture’s elder statesmen — Spike Lee and Russell Simmons — wasted no time in commenting about the tremendous failure on the Academy’s part to give Denzel his just due. Russell Simmons echoed Spike and Devon Franklin’s opinion that Denzel crushed his role in ‘Fences’ Russell went kinda hard in the paint after the show but we noticed he took down this strongly worded post and replaced it with the one below: Wonder why he did that? You think Denzel asked him to change it? The academy? In anycase, do you agree that Denzel was robbed? Did anyone even see ‘Manchester By The Sea’? Will you see it just to find out if Casey Affleck CAN actually carry Denzel’s shoes?
