Ben Affleck Says Republicans ‘Had A Chance’ But Gives Low-Key Obama Support

Not afraid to show off his political side, Ben Affleck is giving his take on the current U.S. Presidential campaign. Hitting the road promoting his political thriller Argo , the director and star of the film compared Republican nominee to past hopefuls who did not make it to the White House. A past ardent supporter of liberal causes and a full-fledged Obama fan four years ago, Affleck only offered tepid support for the incumbent. “I think Republicans really had a chance to win,” Affleck told A.P. during an interview about Argo . And they kind of ended up with like a sort of Mike Dukakis, Al Gore, Bob Dole type – who just couldn’t get people to see him as a real person somehow. Romney just had such trouble coming off as just like the kind of person you see at the grocery store. And I truly believe that has cost him the election.” Affleck went on to add that it looks “quite unlikely” that the Republican hopeful will unseat Obama, saying “negative momentum” can at some point cause a downward spiral for a campaign. “You start making mistakes and then all your advisers tell you, ‘You’ve got to raise your arms more!’ ‘You’ve got to talk deeper.’ So people just get into becoming robotic.” Still, if Affleck shares the same enthusiasm for Obama as in the first go-around, he is clearly holding back, saying that with hindsight his opinions have changed. “”I voted for Obama last time although he got to be all things to all people then,” Affleck said. ”And now he’s got a record which makes it really different … I obviously have more complicated feelings.” Affleck has often thrown his hat in the political sphere, doing lobbying in Washington and traveling abroad for various causes. He’s also said he wouldn’t rule out a future run for an elected office in the future. And his latest film, which debuted last month at the Toronto International Film Festival has already prompted talk of possibly multiple Oscar nominations. The film recalls an international crisis that many attribute for the failed re-election bid of Jimmy Carter in 1980, ushering in the Reagan era. Directed and starring Affleck, along with Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin and John Goodman, Argo is set as militants take over the U.S. embassy in Tehran in the aftermath of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. While 52 Americans are held, six others escape and hide in the Canadian ambassador’s residence. The film recalls a plan hatched by the C.I.A. and specialist Tony Mendez (played by Affleck) to help the six to escape Iran. [ Source: Associated Press ]

Broken Lizard’s Jay Chandrasekhar Tapped To Direct Big Studio Sequel

The good news: Jay Chandrasekhar , founding member of Broken Lizard and frequent helmer of the comedy troupe’s major motion picture outings, including Super Troopers , Beerfest , and the not-technically-Broken Lizard The Babymakers , has landed his biggest studio gig to date! The less exciting news: It’s Yogi Bear 2 . Well now, let’s give this a chance. Deadline reports Chandrasekhar’s hire: “The sequel is being produced by Donald Deline and Karen Rosenfelt. The Eric Brevig-directed 2010 film grossed just over $200 million worldwide.” Remember, it’s a hit property! A good move for Chandrasekhar, in theory. Maybe he can work a little blue comedy into the PG (for “mild rude humor”) franchise. I know every Broken Lizard fan out there would love nothing more than for the guys to keep making Broken Lizard movies, and maybe someday get around to doing Super Troopers 2 , already. But these dudes are indie artists at their core, and sometimes you’ve got to do a Dukes of Hazzard or a Yogi Bear 2 to keep the machine going. (And admittedly, Yogi Bear was more harmless than offensively dumb as these kiddie pics go.) Consider Yogi Bear 2 : Jay Chandrasekhar as Night at the Museum : Tom Lennon and Ben Garant and let’s just keep our fingers crossed that Kevin Heffernan gets a cameo as a goofy Jellystone Park ranger tangling with Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake’s voices, which ought to be enough to keep the BL flame going. Lawless Blu-Ray/DVD Set To Guzzle Fans In November

It had its big debut in Cannes in May and its U.S. release at the end of August. Now John Hillcoat ‘s Lawless is headed to Blu-ray and DVD. Based on Matt Bondurant’s novel The Wettest County in the World , the film stars Shia LaBeouf ( Disturbia ), Tom Hardy ( The Dark Knight Rises ), Academy Award-nominee Gary Oldman ( Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ), Mia Wasikowska ( Alice in Wonderland ), Academy Award-nominee Jessica Chastain ( The Help ) and Emmy winner Guy Pearce ( The King’s Speech ). The Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD will include special features. Hitting retail on November 27th, special features include an audio commentary from director John Hillcoat and author Matt Dondurant. It will also have two featurettes: The True Story of the Wettest County in the World and Franklin County, VA: Then and Now . Willie Nelson’s Midnight Run music video is also a part of the nifty additions. Commenting on the film in Cannes last May, John Hillcoat noted : “There are a lot of parallels to today with the economic crisis, today’s Mexican cartels, heroin in New York, crack and cocaine in the ’80s and the war on drugs. All this feeds back to Prohibition in the ’30s.” Lawless opened with just over $10 million in its opening weekend theatrical release in late August, and has taken in over $36.27 million through last weekend. Official logline : They were brothers who became outlaws, and outlaws who became heroes…The three Bondurant boys (Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jason Clarke), along with their sultry new hire (Jessica Chastain), command the most lucrative bootlegging operation in Franklin County, Virginia.  The locals consider them “indestructible.”  But the law – in the form of a corrupt special deputy (Guy Pearce) – wants a cut of their action, at any cost.  When youngest brother Jack (LaBeouf) gets a taste of power with a deadly gangster (Gary Oldman), the whole business blows sky high.  Based on the astonishing true story, the Bondurant brotherhood is the stuff of legend.

WATCH THIS: Or Don’t If Your Fantasy Of Taken 2 Star Liam Neeson Involves A Ripped Body & Boxer Briefs

I’ll give Liam Neeson this much. He’s even braver in real life than the hard asses he plays in the movies. The New York Daily News  reports that Neeson, 60, raised $20,000 for breast cancer research on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday by stripping down to a pair of pink bikini briefs and entering a dunk tank on the talk show. “If I take this off, does the $10,000 become $20,000?” Neeson asked DeGeneres as he doffed the pink robe he was wearing to reveal the similarly hued Speedo. “We get fined if you take those off,” the talk-show host said pointing to his briefs. After taking the hot seat, he was promptly doused with with a huge tub of water when an audience nailed the tank target. Kudos to Neeson for sucking it up for charity, but, at the risk of sounding like a real a-hole, I’m going to suggest that he didn’t suck it up enough. Judging from the rolls of belly fat visible in the video, I think that Neeson should either adopt a high-protein diet and Hugh Jackman’s personal trainer  or begin employing what I am calling “The Willis Technique” since seeing Looper . Watching Rian Johnson’s impressive but depressing time-travel film, I noticed that Willis, who looks more fat and happy than John McLean  in the film — that’s a Die Hard joke — tended to be well-covered in his bedroom cuddle scenes with Qing Xu. I’m sure there’s a very good reason that Willis favored chaste white t-shirts and other cover-ups while spooning with the love of his life, but I  have to wonder if some bright person on that set, maybe Bruce himself, realized that the simple undergarment would hide a multitude of fleshy sins that could very well have made Johnson’s plausible dystopian future unbearable. Check out the video below and tell me you don’t think the Willis Technique should not become de rigueur among actors of a certain age. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

High and Low: Altman’s A Wedding Mines Matrimony For Laughs, Dante Plumbs Fear In The Hole

This week’s DVD releases include “lesser” but no less entertaining movies by two American mavericks working in their favorite genres: Robert Altman satirizing an American institution with an ensemble cast so large it practically needs the old Cinerama process to get everyone on the screen, and Joe Dante mixing laughs, jolts and teens in peril. HIGH: A Wedding (Anchor Bay; $9.98 DVD) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Written by John Considine, Patricia Resnick, Allan Nichols and Robert Altman; directed by Altman; starring Carol Burnett, Lillian Gish, Vittorio Gassman, Mia Farrow, Paul Dooley, Dina Merrill and Lauren Hutton. WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT: It’s the wedding day for Dino Corelli (Desi Arnaz, Jr.) and Muffin Brenner (Amy Stryker), but the happy couple don’t steal focus in Altman’s hilarious 1978 follow-up to Nashville . The class divide between the two families — Dino’s related on his mother’s side to the wealthy, snobbish Sloan clan while the nouveau-riche Brenners own a truck stop — provides the crux of the comedy, though all sorts of intriguing subplots, tropical storms, sexual secrets and all-around inappropriate behavior pop up throughout the happy day. With this many farcical goings-on in one huge mansion, it’s no surprise that Altman later turned this script into an opera. WHY IT’S SCHMANCY: While critics often dismiss A Wedding , given that it comes on the heels of the director’s masterpiece, it’s a biting, bracing comedy that ranks among the great screen satires of the 1970s. If you’ve ever been to a big wedding, you know the phenomenon of not knowing who everyone is, and this film requires at least a few viewings before you can nail down all the relationships among the 48 — twice as many as Nashville ’s 24 — characters. You’ll find those viewings to be rewarding, since there are so many hilarious performances and oddball supporting characters that you might miss the first time you watch. WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT (AGAIN): This title was mostly lost in the shuffle for years. It was originally available on DVD only in a 2006 Altman box set with three other titles before becoming a solo release with little fanfare the following year. Now that Anchor Bay is giving A Wedding another go, movie fans who missed this gem in the Altman oeuvre have a chance to check it out. (Extras-wise, there’s but one featurette, and someone needs to release that opera on DVD, too.) LOW: The Hole (Big Air Studios; $14.99 DVD, $20.99 Blu-Ray) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Written by Mark L. Smith, directed by Joe Dante; starring Chris Massoglia, Haley Bennett, Nathan Gamble, Teri Polo, Bruce Dern, Dick Miller. WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT: After moving into a new house, brothers Dane (Massoglia) and Lucas (Gamble) discover a trapdoor held shut with a half-dozen padlocks. Consumed by curiosity, they open it, only to find a seemingly bottomless cavern on the other side. They soon realize that the hole knows what you fear most, and with the help of next-door neighbor Julie (Bennett), they fight to overcome their deepest terrors. WHY IT’S FUN: The Hole has that overly-bright look you’ll recognize from cable movies and low-budget direct-to-DVD flicks, but nobody juggles comedy and horror like Dante, the man behind both Gremlins films, The Howling , Piranha and Matinee . Even if he’s working on the cheap, he’s still inventive and funny, and the film offers some effective frights and charming performances (particularly from Bennett and Gamble), all wrapped up in a moral not unlike the one currently being offered up by ParaNorman . WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT (AGAIN): Minimally released in U.S. theaters, it’s more than likely that you missed this one during its all-too-brief run on the big screen. So, this DVD is your only chance to see the movie at all, even if the handful of extras offered here are pretty thin gruel. Alonso Duralde has written about film for The Wrap , Salon and MSNBC.com. He also co-hosts the Linoleum Knife podcast and regularly appears on   What The Flick?! (The Young Turks Network) .  He is a senior programmer for the Outfest Film Festival in Los Angeles and a pre-screener for the Sundance Film Festival. Emma Watson Discovers Newfound Perks in Musical Theater

Perhaps she’s taking a cue from her Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe , but Emma Watson has taken a shine for musical theater after performing some numbers from The Rocky Horror Picture Show in her latest film, The Perks of Being a Wallflower . Radcliffe headed to Broadway and London’s West End well before finishing up duties on Harry Potter , starring in Equus in 2007, which famously had the mortal Daniel Radcliffe appearing in the buff on stage. He more recently received awards accolades last year for his performance in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying on Broadway. “I love musical theater, so I would love to do a musical soon, that would be wonderful” Watson told Britain’s Sunday Telegraph . Watson’s first film since starring in the Harry Potter series, The Perks of Being a Wallflower has so far proven a box office success since opening two weekends ago in limited release. Summit Entertainment expanded it to 102 theaters last weekend, grossing just under $1.14 million for a very solid $11,150 average. In the film, she plays an awkward student who bonds with friends, seeking solace in Rocky Horror “I was terrified of the Rocky Horror scenes,” she said, explaining how singing and dancing scenes had given her a new-found affinity for cabaret. “But, as it turned out, it was fun, and once I got over how weird it was to go from wearing knitted [sweaters] to corsets and fishnets, I got it together.” Still, this was not her absolute first exposure to the medium. Watson appeared in a student production of Three Sisters at Brown University where is has been studying for a Liberal Arts degree. [ Sources: Sunday Telegraph , BBC ]

Bond Is No Wuss! Daniel Craig Defends Casino Royale Tear-Shedding Scene In Vanity Fair

James Bond is not going all emo on us.  In a new Vanity Fair cover story on 007 actor Daniel Craig ,  the actor defends the tear his character shed over the death of the girlfriend who betrayed him, and says Bond is not getting soft. “He didn’t sob. There was, like, a tear in his eye. No snot coming out of his nose, you know,” Craig says in the magazine’s November issue, which is out this month. With the latest Bond adventure,   Skyfall ,  set for a Nov. 9 release date, Craig talks to the magazine about the responsibilities that come with the character. “Pierce [Brosnan] used to say that it’s like being responsible for a small country. It’s kind of like you have to look after it diplomatically. I kind of get that, but I can’t really say that’s my deal. I’m not going to be the poster boy for this. Although I  am  the poster boy.” And being the face of one of the biggest money-making franchises in cinema has its drawbacks. “You talk to people in the movie business who have been doing this 40 years and they all say the difference is that, back in the day, you could go and have a drink in the bar, get drunk, fall over, have a good time, relax, whatever, and no one would know about it. But now everyone’s got a camera” Craig says. So you can’t live a normal life anymore. Because it will become public knowledge that you’ve whatever—gotten drunk in a bar or skinny-dipped on a beach or something. Things that normal people do occasionally. And in a way that’s kind of—I’ve got to be high-class. I’ve done a lot of things in my life. But you have to think in that way. Which is sad, because I like bars.” The actor also takes a pragmatic look at the Heineken product-placement deal that will have the martini-drinking Bond drinking its beer in Skyfall.    “Heineken gave us a ton of money for there to be Heineken in a shot in a bar. So, how easy is that? Just to say, O.K., there’s Heineken. It’s there—it’s in the back of the shot. Without them, the movie couldn’t get sold, so that all got kind of blown up. ‘Bond’s new drink is a Heineken.’ ”  Craig says, pointing out atht Bond “likes a lot of drinks—Heineken, champagne; it’s all in there.” Not that Craig will totally sell out in the name of product placement. “I’ll drink a beer in the shot, I’m happy to, but I’m not going to do an ‘ Ahhhhh ’ [pantomiming an actor looking refreshed]. And I would say this because they’re paying, but they’re kind of respectful about it. They don’t want to screw the movie up.” If you need more Bond, check out Annie Leibovitz’s shoot with Craig  here. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter.
