From Sideways to Little Miss Sunshine to Slumdog Millionaire and Black Swan , Fox Searchlight has long proven more than adept at marketing its awards-season wares. Thus the distributor seemed a logical choice to acquire Shame , the acclaimed sex-addict drama that was near-instantly presumed to be destined for an accursed NC-17 rating. But now Searchlight, continuing its “What, us worry?” campaign on behalf of the Steve McQueen-directed, Michael Fassbender-starring gem, may have hit its stride.
Way back in June, Spyglass Entertainment debuted the first trailer for The Vow , the latest Rachel McAdams romance film involving memory loss. It was depressing to see our former Notebook sweetheart diving headfirst into another melodramatic title. Like McAdams’s Vow character though — who is struck with amnesia after a parked car accident involving an overplayed Meatloaf single — I forgot about the former starlet’s downwardly spiraling filmography…until today’s new preview for The Vow reminded me, it’s about time someone stages a career intervention for Rachel McAdams.
Even I, a beleaguered devotee of Tyler Perry’s melodramatic, muumuu-rocking oeuvre, had a difficult time accepting the inevitability of… God, I can’t even write it. Kim… ugh. Kiiiimmmm… fuck . KimKardashian. Kim. Kar. Dashian. Whew. OK. Even I had a difficult time accepting the inevitability of Kim Kardashian’s casting in Perry’s upcoming The Marriage Counselor , and that was before the tragic unraveling of her nuptials to that discarded oaf, whoever he was. I wasn’t alone, either; other fans’ disapproval pelted the door of the specially reinforced storm closet where Perry sought refuge. Now, with Kar… Kar… da… Ugh. With her shooting completed, the filmmaker finally took to his blog today to explain himself.

Bella and Edward’s sex scene. It’s a different story for the actors involved, specifically for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart , who have talked at length about how awkward filming the scene was. Their co-stars seem to be onboard with their enthusiasm for the “action,” however. When MTV News caught up with Taylor Lautner recently, he said he was ready for it. “I’ve seen Edward and Bella go through a lot so far, so I feel like I was kind of ready to see this,” Lautner said. “I think everybody will feel the same way. We’ve seen Edward and Bella in their relationship grow so much that it’s about time.” “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer told us at the “Breaking Dawn” premiere that the scene in the movie gives fans a lot more to see and think about than she did in the book. “I think it’s romantic, and it does give you more than the book does,” Meyer said. “I know some of the sites call it, instead of ‘fade to black,’ ‘fade to sad.’ They’d love to see more. I think this gives them that,” she said. “It gives them a romantic peek into the honeymoon. We don’t want to see too much.” Although everyone seems to be excited to see the honeymoon scene, Lautner still isn’t sure that Bella made the right decision when she chose Edward over his character, Jacob Black. Following a successful run at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse, the Harvey Fierstein-adapted stage musical Newsies — based on the best period musical of all time about turn of the century paperboys fighting Big Business (that also starred Christian Bale ) — will open on honest-to-goodness Broadway in March. This gives you bandwagon-jumpers plenty of time to catch up to the rest of us Newsies diehards who’ve known all along that one day, the family-friendly stylings of legions of dancing street urchins just trying to sell some ‘papes would catch on like gangbusters. The jury’s still out as far as I’m concerned on whether or not director Gary Ross ( Seabiscuit ) was the right director to helm Suzanne Collins ‘s The Hunger Games , even with the mostly-satisfying first trailer debut earlier this week. Lionsgate, however, seems more confident in Ross, as they want him to return to helm the second Hunger Games installment, 2013’s Catching Fire , with writer Simon Beaufoy ( Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours ) reportedly in the running to script.
Nearly five months after giving birth to her first child, Natalie Portman returns to Hollywood tomorrow night to take part in Jason Reitman’s live reading of The Apartment at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The Oscar winner will play Fran Kubelik, “the fetching elevator operator” that Shirley MacLaine played (and earned an Academy Award nomination for) in the 1960 Billy Wilder film. J.K.
