Looks like indie film financier/Tweeter Megan Ellison’s promise came true : According to a Box Office Mojo update, Paul Thomas Anderson ‘s The Master has been added to the fall 2012 release calendar, to open on October 12 — just in time for an awards run! No official word from distrib The Weinstein Co. on the date or final title for the Philip Seymour Hoffman-starrer, nor mention of if/when the pic will first debut at one of the season’s prestigious film festivals. “Going into a conversation where you’re defending Adam Sandler is normally not going to work in your favor. I learned this six years ago when I was doing my shift hanging out with Holocaust survivors, and one of the old guys actually turned to me and said, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen,” and this was coming from a man who was in Auschwitz. There was no way I was going to try to defend the merits of Sandler talking gibberish to a room full of men who lived through one of the darkest periods in all of humanity. … and by better I mean worse, and by worse I mean now that the licensing deal between Universal and toy company Hasbro has ended, Sony has snatched up the Candy Land board game movie project — you know, the one like ” Lord of The Rings , but set in a world of candy” — as a vehicle for none other than Adam Sandler . Said Columbia prez Doug Belgrad: ” Candy Land is more than just a game. It is a brand that children, parents and grandparents know and love. The world of Candy Land offers an extraordinary canvas upon which to create a fantastical, live-action family adventure film with a larger than life part for Adam. We are thrilled to partner with Hasbro and Happy Madison on this project.” [ THR ]

Glenn Kenny didn’t quite make the cut in last week’s scathing critical responses to Jack and Jill , but his withering postscript deserves a look: “One thing I did not get into in my review of Jack and Jill for MSN Movies was just how (ostensibly) insultingly sub-pro forma is its actual filmmaking. It isn’t even just a matter of how obviously its indifferent redemption-narrative structure is the Avid-enabled equivalent of a very sloppy butter sculpture. The indifference is felt in almost every aspect [… T]his is the first time it really hit home for me just how mindful Sandler, director Dennis Dugan, and the rest of the perpetrators are with respect to keeping overhead down. Here’s what I’ve gathered from the new Snow White and the Huntsman trailer: Charlize Theron ‘s Evil Queen is pissed, Kristen Stewart ‘s Snow White is innocent, and the color saturation of this fairytale world looks like a Crayola-dappled Middle Earth. Pretty spectacular.

REVIEW: Al Pacino Devours Otherwise Humorless Jack and Jill

Despite all of the grumpy and/or gleeful speculation that arose around the internet when it got its first glimpse of Adam Sandler donning a wig and falsies to play his own awkward twin sister, Jack and Jill is not actually the worst movie of all time. Given other recent efforts from Sandler’s Happy Madison production company, most notably Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star , it’d be hard pressed to even compete for the title of worst of the year. The film, directed by longtime Sandler collaborator Dennis Dugan and written by Steve Koren, presents an at least theoretically standard mix of slapstick, celebrity cameos and not-quite-winking sentimentality. It’s sometimes funny, but more often it’s just very strange and threaded through with hostility — at one point, during a montage that involved Jill repeatedly accidentally injuring a myopic Mexican grandmother at a picnic, the colleagues on either side of me leaned in separately to whisper, ” What is happening ?”

Jonah Hill was Offered a Part in Tarantino’s Django Unchained, But…

Looks like Jonah Hill won’t be joining Christoph Waltz, Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kurt Russell, Kerry Washington, Anthony LaPaglia, RZA and Don Johnson in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained , even though he was offered a part. Hill revealed why he had to turn down the role with thundering poetic regret: “I got offered the new Quentin Tarantino movie, and I can’t do it because of my schedule… Doing Quentin’s movie would have obviously been amazing, but my schedule didn’t work out, which sucks.” Djonah Unavailable, more like! REVIEW: Lars von Trier’s Melancholia Offers a Glorious Peep into the Sugar Easter Egg of Doom

Lars von Trier’s Melancholia is neither the provocation nor the yowl of anguish that his last picture, Antichrist , was. For those reasons, it’s less effective and also far less of a workout: Antichrist was the first von Trier movie I genuinely loved, after a decade’s worth of railing against the sufferdome atmosphere of pictures like Dogville , Dancer in the Dark , and even the mildly bearable Breaking the Waves . Antichrist stunned and upset me, but it also filled me with compassion toward the man who made it, a feeling I’d never imagined I could have. The gift of Antichrist — with its horrific depictions of emotional suffering, its wailing-wind subtext of “Nature is everywhere, inside you and outside, and it is not your friend” — was that von Trier had surprised me. That is a critic’s greatest pleasure — or at least it’s mine.
