AIDS Anniversary Recognized, Still No Cure

More here:

The 30-year battle against AIDS is an unbelievable chapter in the history of medicine and 30 years later more than 60-million people around the world have been diagnosed with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. And of those, 25-million people have died as there is no cure. On June 5, 1981, a bombshell quietly exploded in America. On that day, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a report on a rare and deadly illness affecting five young, gay men in Los Angeles. It would be more than a year before the condition got its official name, but that was the day that Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, was officially recognized in the U.S. Get Tested On June 27th, National HIV Testing Day Thirty years later, it can be hard to remember the fear and the desperation of those early days. It took more than three years to identify the virus that caused AIDS and to develop a test to detect HIV, the virus that causes it. There were no treatments, and most people died very quickly. The average survival time after diagnosis was less than a year. People lost their jobs, their families and friends, and their homes when they got sick. Out of fear and ignorance, some schools refused to admit HIV-positive students and some doctors wouldn’t treat HIV-positive patients. Churches and funeral homes refused to bury those who died. Minority Infants Much More Likely To Have HIV

View original post here:

A new government report says that the rates of HIV infection in infants are significantly higher among blacks and Hispanics than whites, and preventive measures are needed to reduce the disparity. Although the number of HIV-infected infants has declined overall, among black babies, the rate of perinatal HIV infection — meaning transmission at the time of birth — is 23 times higher than for whites, and among Hispanics, the rate is four times higher, according to findings published in the Feb. 5 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The average rate of perinatal infection in the United States is 2.7 per 100,000 live births, the report indicates. For blacks, the rate is 12.3 per 100,000; for Hispanics, 2.0 per 100,000; and for whites, 0.5 per 100,000. The researchers, who analyzed data from 34 states from 2004 to 2007, noted that transmission from an HIV-infected mother to her child can be significantly reduced through preventive measures. So what can we do to help? *  Be sure that if you are single and sexually active, you protect yourself each and every time. Always use condoms and if pregnancy is not desired, seek medical attention and get on some birth control! *  Make sure that if you are engaging in risky behaviors such as sharing needles and exchanging bodily fluids, you get tested regularly. *  Primary HIV prevention in women is key and efforts should be specifically directed towards black and Hispanic women. All HIV-positive women who are pregnant should have access to quality health care and take advantage of preventive measures, including early treatment with antiretroviral medications, the report stated. * HIV infection should be diagnosed before or early in pregnancy * All moms-to-be should receive prenatal care *  HIV-positive women should follow an antiretroviral medication regimen throughout pregnancy *  A cesarean delivery should be scheduled at 38 weeks’ gestation if the virus has not been suppressed *  Antiretroviral medication should be taken during labor and delivery *  Newborns exposed to HIV should receive antiretroviral medication within the first hours after birth and for the first six weeks of life. As a community, we must do all that we can to change these statistics as our youth will someday lead us into the future. It’s vital to educate our children at an early age about the dangers around HIV/AIDS that continue to tear down Black communities. Let’s take the extra step and protect our culture and race against this plague that is killing our people. Related Articles: Should 11-Year-Olds Be Allowed To Pick Up Condoms And Have Sex? Minority Infants Much More Likely To Have HIV

For Discussion: How Young Is Too Young To Start Giving Kids Condoms???

Apparently the city of Philadelphia thinks that the perfect age to start giving kids condoms is… age 11!! (PHILADELPHIA) — With the largest rate of teens having sex in the country and the fifth-highest HIV/AIDS rate in that age group, Philadelphia has launched a campaign to reverse those trends with a website that offers mail-order condoms to children as young as 11. A similar effort in Provincetown, Mass., last year stirred up vigorous protest from parents when the school board made condoms available to children of all ages, as long as they went to a school counselor and asked. After the uproar, officials limited access to fifth-graders and up — or those 11 and older. But so far in Philadelphia, the parental reaction has been minimal, according to city health department spokesman Jeff Moran. Though not much data exists on sexual behavior among kids as young as 11, the 2009 CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey shows that 15 percent of children under 13 have had their first sexual encounter. “I haven’t heard much in way of public outcry — not yet — but I anticipate it,” said Gary Bell, executive director of Bebashi-Transition to Hope, a local nonprofit that works with teens on prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. The main impetus for this program was the reports of disturbing sexual behavior of young children. “We hear from teachers and school counselors and sometimes the principals that kids are cutting school in the afternoon and leaving early to go have orgies — and that’s in middle school,” said Bell. “They get groups together with kids of different genders — sometimes same-sex and sometimes mixed. The parents are not home and so they go there and have sex and trade partners.” He also reported that city teens use different colored lip stick to signal “how far they will go with oral sex with a guy,” according to Bell. “We are hearing about them acting out in school in the bathrooms and the stairways. This is not entirely new, but we don’t think of it in middle school.” The age old question has always been “Do condoms encourage children to have sex”?? What say you?? Source

Silly Fag Mishap of the Day

This is one of the most ridiculous gay mishaps I have seen to date…not that I know that many gay mishaps…I mean other than contracting AIDS with craigslist hook-ups.. Dude crazy glued a tiny hat to his head on Halloween, cuz I guess he was caught up in the moment, and I think it’s important to help this video spread like AIDS…I mean it’d be thematically appropriate. I got nothing left to give people.
