My very own Senator, Mark Begich, is the 50th Senator open to using reconciliation to pass Health Care Reform in this country. Can we get excited yet?

I KNOW that Mark wants to pass this very badly. I spoke to him about that very subject several months ago and he expressed his desire to get the bill passed. He is being very careful, which is called for in the crazy political times we are living in, but he is definitely NOT going to balk if the other 49 senators are ready to do this thing. Thank you for contacting me regarding health care reform. The reconciliation process is a budgetary tool used to address spending and deficit issues with a simple majority vote. The budget reconciliation process has been used 22 times by both parties since 1980. Action to clean up the health reform bill will further reduce the deficit. Comprehensive health care reform has already passed the Senate with 60 votes. If the House passes the Senate bill, the President could sign that version of comprehensive reform into law. I believe reconciliation would only be used as a tool to take out special backroom deals and to eliminate concerns raised by many Alaskans I’ve talked with. The President has proposed narrow changes which I support, including completely closing the coverage gap for seniors’ prescription drugs, eliminating the special Nebraska funding provision, providing additional federal financing to all states to help pay for the expansion of Medicaid, and strengthening the Medicare waste, fraud, and abuse provisions. Again, thank you for contacting me. As the 111th Congress moves forward, please continue to be in touch with your thoughts and concerns. Sincerely, Mark Begich U.S. Senator You can read more by clicking the title and visiting Shannyn’s blog. And by the way speaking of Shannyn, I need to give her a lot of credit for pushing Senator Begich on this issue and repeatedly asking him, both on the radio and in private, what he is going to do. Without Shannyn’s persistence we may still have no idea how Begich was planning to vote. Thank you Shannyn.

Shannyn is going to have Michael Stinson on her show today!

I just got off of the phone with Shanny and she told me she will have Michael Stinson on at around 11:15 Alaska time. For those of you just joining us Stinson was the guy who posted that Palin’s Tonight Show performance was not exactly the home run we were led to believe that it was. Anyhow I will post the podcast later this afternoon, but if you want to hear it live just click here and give it a listen. It should be quite informative.

Sarah Palin on Leno. Wear your hip waders kids the mooseshit is going to get deep!

Part One Her voice still has that shrill quality to it that sterilizes small farm animals at fifty paces. Her father tells her what kind of “ammunition” to use? WTF? And why in the hell did that elicit applause from an audience in California? Did she bring in her own people? “Opinion under the guise of hard news stories”? Isn’t that the very definition of EVERY show on Fox News? Leno is such a kiss ass, his line about attacks on her family could have been written for him by Rebecca Mansour, or recent escapee Meg Stapleton. SHE is the one that victimizes her children. And believe me they are NOT well adjusted. Wait SHE commented about the “Family Guy” episode? I thought Bristol did that? Uh oh did somebody forget their cover story? And how did she not have an “opportunity to follow up”. She has a full time Facebook ghostwriter for God’s sake! You guys alright? Do you need a break? Let me know when you are ready to listen to more of this lying twit. Now? Okay. Part Two Did she just throw her father under the bus? Did she actually blame a man who was a respected educator for teaching her to cheat? Just when I think I have seen her go as low as she can possibly get, she surprises me. I cannot help but wonder what McCain has on Palin that compels her to support his re-election bid? The mind reels. By the way Palin doing comedy is not all that surprising. I have been laughing at her for almost two years now. Oooh she sucks. What the hell is she doing with her hands? And yes Sarah you are right we DON’t know the real story, yet. But you can bet your ass we are getting there!

Part One For those of you who have been following the Alaska blogs for awhile this may be the first time that you will get a chance to see and hear Ann Strongheart who created the Anonymous Bloggers site over to the left on my blogroll. She gave many people their first glimpse into what life in rural Alaska is all about. And as many Mudpuppies know all too well she also provided information about how the villages that were so terribly affected by the cold snap and lack of fuel last year responded to the donations that many of you sent. Part Two This panel of Alaska’s first people helps those of us living in cities and outside of Alaska a real understanding of what it means to live a “subsistence” lifestyle. Rex Butler says Levi ready to pay child support, will write check within the week.

“The judge decided that Bristol should have child support, which we don’t disagree with,” Butler told the ABC News Law and Justice Unit. “Fortunately, Levi has put this money aside a long time ago. The back support is going to come out to about $10,000 to $13,000, and he’s going to write Bristol a check.” Butler confirmed that Johnston’s saved funds came in part from modeling, particularly a much-publicized spread in Playgirl, but said the most important matter going forward was “whether to seek full custody, split custody or whether Levi will be satisfied with reasonable visitation.” “I think split custody is the best of these,” Butler said. As I said before, the multiple reports that Levi had to pay up $18,500 in back child support were bullshit. Those were based on Van Flein demands of $1,700 a month. It does not look like the judge believed that number was fair. Personally I think the judge kept the amount way too high as it appears she is still asking for excess of $1,ooo per month from Levi. I don’t believe he will have the funds to pay that sum for long, unless he makes a book deal. It seems insane that Palin would push him to do so. (Whoops I almost forgot who I was talking about!) Of course right now Van Flein is happy with this early victory. Thomans Van Flein, attorney for Bristol Palin, told ABC News he and Bristol were pleased with Thursday’s outcome. “Bristol is pleased with the rulings from the court today. While pleased that the judge applied settled Alaska Child Support and Discovery Law in her favor, she is most pleased to have this process moving forward. She anticipates now resolving the few issues remaining between her and Levi.” Yeah you just wait buddy, I am none to sure things are going to turn out the way you anticipate. I really like this parting shot from Rex Butler by the way. When asked about Palin’s upcoming role in the hit show, Butler told ABC News, “We are glad to see that she got some work. This will mean she has some income and will be more independent of her mother, and that’s a good thing . And this could change some things between her and Levi.” Nice.

All hail the glory that is Sarah Palin.

I have been a little tough on Palin and her supporters lately. I hope this will smooth things over. You know the scary thing is that THIS is exactly how her followers see her. (H/T to the artist who created and e-mailed this image to me.)

A Doctor’s response to my "Tale of Two Babies" post.

I have received multiple e-mails today from people providing helpful links, interesting pictures, and, of course, scathing rebuttals to my post. Hidden within this avalanche of correspondence was one e-mail from a doctor who offered some interesting insights and provided contact information in case I wanted to question him further. Well of course my interest was piqued, so I called him. The first thing I did was to establish that he was indeed an actual doctor (After all on the internet we can pretend to be experts on just about ANYTHING. I actually know of a politician who quit her job yet still pretends that her opinions are on the same level of importance as those of the President. Imagine that.) After only a few minutes of conversation there was no doubt that this person was indeed a physician, and very bright one at that. We talked for quite awhile and when we came to the end of our conversation I asked if he would be willing to write a brief post outlining some of the things that he had mentioned. Here is that post. While I am generally unimpressed by conspiracy theories, I have to say that I find Gryphen’s pictures compelling. Clearly these are two separate children; I haven’t any more idea than anyone else as to why the former governor would perpetrate such a hoax, although her history of erratic behavior I suppose would support almost any explanation. I have had a passing interest in the Trig Palin story ever since Cathy Baldwin-Johnson’s odd, carefully-worded statement concerning Governor Palin’s health was published in the late hours immediately before the 2008 election. The link to the actual text is below: www.latimes.com/media/acrobat/2008-11/43179602.pdf For the most part this is a simple boilerplate statement, but it is remarkable for its lack of a birthdate for Trig – doubt about which was of course the reason for the statement’s release in the first place. From my point of view, however, as a practicing physician, the larger question is whether Governor Palin’s physician was aware of this hoax, and if so, to what level did she participate and if indeed she did, was that participation medically, morally or ethically improper? In its role as the ultimate guarantor of public safety, the State has a vested interest in the ethical and legal behavior of physicians it licenses. In fulfilling that role, each and every state has a state physician licensing board. I believe there is more than enough evidence for the Alaska State Medical Board to investigate Cathy Baldwin-Johnson’s participation in this matter, and to determine if she breached standards set by that Board for physician conduct. They will ask – and she will answer – pointed, unequivocal questions concerning exactly what took place at the birth of Trig Palin, and as a doctor with thirty years’ experience, I can assure you that no physician would ever risk losing her medical license by answering falsely. It would seem to me that the issue hinges around four questions: firstly, did Cathy Baldwin-Johnson advise Sarah Palin to board an airplane for a ten-hour trip at altitude while showing signs of active labor? Although I am not an obstetrician, if she did so, I believe that would clearly constitute malpractice. Secondly, I would ask whether she assisted in falsifying records concerning the birth date of Trig Palin; if so, that is most likely a felony, which would result in a physician’s losing his/her license in all fifty states. Thirdly, I would ask Dr. Baldwin-Johnson to chronicle exactly what took place in the birth of Trig Palin and to explain why Governor Palin felt compelled, as a Vice-Presidential candidate to lie about or obfuscate concerning those circumstances. Fourthly, I would be curious as to what the actual explanation is for the two different children Palin has presented as her son Trig and if Baldwin-Johnson had any prior knowledge or complicity. This sad little charade has nearly unraveled; all that remains of this pathetic tale is the denouement. The Alaska State Medical Board has the opportunity – and the authority – and the responsibility – to open this abscess to the fresh air and bright sunlight that will bring about its cure. There must be numerous physicians in Alaska who are scratching their heads over this whole tale just as I am, now more than ever. The time has come for them to step up the plate, contact their medical licensing board, and demand that these questions be answered once and for all. Update: Somebody just asked why I don’t provide the doctor’s name. Is this really a question that needs to be answered? I did not think so. Scurry back to the “Ocean of Urine” my little friend and report to your queen that once again it did not work.

Oh THIS is not going to make a certain ex-Governor of Alaska very happy.

“Game Change,” the 2008 campaign tell-all book by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, takes over the No. 1 rank on our list of top political books, while “Going Rogue” by Sarah Palin slips to No. 5. And guess what? “Game Change” managed to get to number one without having a bunch of conservative groups buying it in bulk to create the artificial illusion that it was a great book. Let’s face it if “Going Rogue” had been forced to compete on a level playing field it would NEVER have even come close to a bestsellers list. But Palin always insists the deck be stacked in her favor, doesn’t she?

Health care costs in this country are high because America is full of hypochondriacs and pantywaists. Yeah that’s right, I am talking to you!

The other day I was on the phone talking to a friend of mine who happens to be a doctor. I decided to ask him what he thought of the debate over health care reform. He said that it was completely fucked up (I think that is doctor talk). He said that Obama and the Democrats went about it ALL wrong, and what they should have done is to get a bunch of board certified physicians in a room and have them create a list of all that is wrong with health care in this country and a list of what they think might fix it. Now this doctor mentioned tort reform, and over billing by physicians, but the thing that he felt attributed most to the high cost of health care is that people have become too dependent on medicine and doctors. And remember, THIS was coming from a man who made his living because people THOUGHT THEY WERE SICK! And then he directed me to read the article which I have linked to right here , and a portion of which you can read below. Somehow we have developed an expectation that our health should always be perfect, and if it isn’t, there should be a pill to fix it. With every ache and sniffle we run to the doctor or purchase useless quackery such as the dietary supplement Airborne or homeopathic cures (to the tune of tens of billions of dollars a year). We demand unnecessary diagnostic testing, narcotics for bruises and sprains, antibiotics for our viruses (which do absolutely no good). And due to time constraints on physicians, fear of lawsuits and the pressure to keep patients satisfied, we usually get them. Yet the great secret of medicine is that almost everything we see will get better (or worse) no matter how we treat it. Usually better. The human body is exquisitely talented at healing. If bodies didn’t heal by themselves, we’d be up the creek. Even in an intensive care unit, with our most advanced techniques applied, all we’re really doing is optimizing the conditions under which natural healing can occur. We give oxygen and fluids in the right proportions, raise or lower the blood pressure as needed and allow the natural healing mechanisms time to do their work. It’s as if you could put your car in the service garage, make sure you give it plenty of gas, oil and brake fluid and that transmission should fix itself in no time. The bottom line is that most conditions are self-limited. This doesn’t mesh well with our immediate-gratification, instant-action society. But usually that bronchitis or back ache or poison ivy or stomach flu just needs time to get better. Take two aspirin and call me in the morning wasn’t your doctor being lazy in the middle of the night; it was sound medical practice. As a wise pediatrician colleague of mine once told me, “Our best medicines are Tincture of Time and Elixir of Neglect.” Taking drugs for things that go away on their own is rarely helpful and often harmful. Essentially we are a nation waiting expectantly to become ill. We are bombarded by advertisements for medications to sedate our “restless legs”, to lower our cholesterol, to help us sleep, to make our bones stronger, etc., etc., etc.. The fact is that the overwhelming majority of us will NEVER need any of those. But we THINK we will because they are such a prevalent part of our psyches. Now days potential patients go to their doctors with a laundry list of advertised medications to ask their doctor about. “How about this one Doc? You know I DO feel dizzy if I stand up to fast. Or what about this one? You know after I spend a few hours in my garden my joints DO ache a little. Just point out the ones my insurance will cover. I will start with those.” It is ridiculous. And you cannot rely on your doctor to always steer you away from unnecessary medications either. The next time you visit your physician take a look at the logo on his pen, or on his coffee cup, or on the cute little digital clock on his desk. 99 out of a hundred times you will see the logo of some medication, whose (often very young and female) sales rep took your doctor out to lunch, or dinner, or paid their way to attend a convention at a resort in Hawaii (right next to the beach and golf course). If the medication will not do you any serious harm, and it will shut you up, the doctor may have no compelling reason NOT to write out a prescription. However the more you rely on medication to make you feel better the weaker you are making your body. Essentially you are telling your body’s natural defenses to sit this one out and let the drugs do the heavy lifting. This allows your immune system to get fat and lazy, so when you really need it to kick in and fight off something life threatening, it is unable to respond. Add that to our horrible diets, and lack of exercise, and no WONDER health care costs are through the roof in this country. There is no profit in healthy people! But there is a buttload of money to be made on obese, inactive, and medication reliant people. So which side of the health care reform debate do YOU think has the most money to spend? I have probably said this to you all before, but let me get up on my soapbox and say it again. Going to your doctor is NOT health care, it is SICK CARE. You do not go because you feel healthy. You go because you don’t feel well or because you want to be told if you should still THINK you feel well. “Give it to me straight Doc. Should I go ahead with my tennis game today, or check into the hospital?” Real health care means eating a diet low in fat that avoids most processed foods and contains plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, getting plenty of exercise, laughing as much as possible during your day, and getting up off your ass. If more Americans made those choices we could bring health care costs down in no time. Okay I am climbing down off of my soapbox now. You guys have a happy healthy Sunday. Namaste Update: Well this certainly elicited a lot of discussion. Okay let me be clear about a few things. I am not saying that people with REAL health problems should not seek medical advice. Of course they should. The problem is that people EXPECT to be ill and go to the emergency room for every little ailment. They also demand medication for things that their bodies are perfectly capable of defeating. But the reliance on medication is a serious problem, and the constant visits to the emergency rooms are a large part of what drives health care costs through the roof. And I also have no problem with yearly checkups. I think you should go. Especially when you are my age. And if you are a woman then pap smears and mammograms should be part of your preventative plan. But if you are really treating your body as if you want it to last a long time, then most of the time your checkups will be drama free. You will have been engaging in “health care” all along and if the doctor does find something which requires his expertise he will find that your body is capable of making a fast recovery. Update 2: Just to clear up any confusion, my doctor friend and the person who wrote the article are NOT the same person. The words that I attributed to my friend are in the first few sentences. He DID however agree with much of what the article said, and told me that EVERY doctor he has shown it to also agreed with the majority of it.
