Britney Spears Didn’t Write Femme Fatale Tracks: Does It Matter?

Ke$ha, Ryan Tedder and other Spears songwriters defend the pop ‘icon’ from criticism that she didn’t pen songs on her latest release. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: C. Flanigan/ WireImage Britney Spears launched her career as a fresh face with the perfect amount of girl-next-door charm and sex appeal and rocketed her way up to pop superstardom. She followed her debut, … Baby One More Time, with a series of chart-topping albums, including her latest release, Femme Fatale. And while fans are loving the new album, some critics are making a fuss over Spears’ lack of songwriting credits. Spears didn’t write any of the tracks on her 1999 debut, but by her second album, Oops! … I Did It Again, she had was making some songwriting contributions. Over the course of five albums, she has co-written 17 tracks, including hit singles “Everytime” and “Me Against the Music.” With Femme Fatale, Brit left the writing to others. And many industry insiders are defending the star for not taking credit for work she didn’t do on Femme Fatale. Songwriter Heather Bright , who wrote the track “Trouble for Me” on Spears’ latest, gave Spears credit for not pushing to get credit for a song she had nothing to do with. “I would just like to address one thing! The media is talking trash about how Britney didn’t write any of the songs on her album … HELLO! Wake up everybody! NONE OF THESE ARTISTS WRITE THEIR OWN SONGS!!!!!!” she wrote, before slamming a laundry list of stars who do seek credit for songs they don’t write. Bright also praised pop stars who in fact write their own songs. Like Bright, Ke$ha, who penned the Femme Fatale track “Till the World Ends,” defended the pop star. Not writing any songs on the album doesn’t make Britney any less of an artist, Ke$ha said. “I think people should be themselves and be their own artist, whatever that means for her,” Ke$ha said in an interview with MTV Canada. “She’s an amazing singer, an amazing performer and she’s an icon. I don’t think that that means she has to write. I do write my own music, some people don’t and it doesn’t at all make them any less of a brilliant artist, obviously, in her case, an icon.” While Spears didn’t write for her current album, she explained that it was important to pick songs that were right for her. “I really like to choose songs that empower people and make them feel good about themselves, first and foremost. I have a team of people that I work with, Max Martin and Dr. Luke, that are amazing producers,” she told MTV News recently. “They bring me a load of songs but usually I’m very quick with the way I work and the type of songs that I like. And if I like it, then I’ll record it.” “Gasoline” songwriter Claude Kelly told us that Spears always knows what’s best for her. “She’s very, very much in control of what she records, how she sounds, how she portrays herself on the record,” Kelly said of Britney’s process. “There’s no grand master puppeteering — that’s kind of a myth. She knows what she’s going to cut. She’s not going to sing anything she doesn’t want to and she has this amazing ability when she gets behind the mic. It’s like eye of the tiger.” Songwriter and One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder also gave props to Spears for not taking credit for music she had nothing to do with. “I love that Britney does that. She knows where she is, and she shows up to the studio and says, ‘What am I singing today guys? Okay, cool! Let me look at it,’ ” he said. “So to me it’s whatever, be thankful for what you have.” Do you think Britney is less of a pop star because she doesn’t write her own songs? Sound off in the comments. Mark Hoppus Says Blink-182 Are ‘Working Very Hard’ On New Album

Backing up drummer Travis Barker’s recent claims, the bassist maintains that Blink’s long-awaited new album will hit stores this summer. By James Montgomery Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus Photo: MTV News Back in February, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker told MTV News that his band’s long-in-the-works album would finally be finished in “June or July,” an announcement that was greeted with much joy — and skepticism — from fans who have seemingly been waiting forever to hear new music from the trio. Because, truth be told, they’ve heard talk like this before … in fact, at this point, the project carries with it a timeline that stretches all the way back to February 2009 — when Blink-182 announced that they were not only reuniting, but “in the studio writing and recording a new album” — and has included supposed release dates in 2010 and 2011 . But now, it really, truly seems like the still-untitled album is entering the home stretch. Not only did Mark Hoppus post a brand-new studio clip on his Facebook page late Tuesday, but when MTV News spoke to the bassist last week — back when Blink-182 were still in the hunt for the Musical March Madness championship — he backed up Barker’s claims of a summer release. For real. “The timeline! The Blink-182 timeline! Always an interesting point of discussion!” Hoppus laughed. “We are still planning for an early-to-midsummer release, we’re working very hard at it. Right now Travis is back on the road, so I’m back in L.A. working on the record, [guitarist Tom DeLonge’s] working on the record, we’re sending stuff to Travis; as soon as [he] gets back, hopefully Tom and I will have the album in a shape where Travis can come in and we can spend, you know, a month, month-and-a-half working really hard on pounding out the album and get it done.” Hoppus explained that most of the recording’s delay has been due to the way Blink have chosen to work this time around — in bits and pieces, alone and together, in a pair of California studios — which has everything to do with each member’s rather, uh, busy schedules. “It’s definitely a very different process … before, at least we were all in the same room at the same time,” he said. “With this, with Travis having his solo record, me being in L.A., and Tom doing his stuff and also being in San Diego, at first it felt like maybe it was a bit piecemeal, but now it feels like we’re getting into a good rhythm. “Between sending songs back and forth to each other, we’ll all meet up in the studio every few weeks and go over everything, listen down to everything and I’ll say, ‘OK, I love what you did with this idea. Let me take this song for a week and try some ideas on it,’ ” he continued. “And I’ll take a song for a week, try a bunch of stuff on it, present it back to everybody else, they’ll make their comments and then move on from there.” So, yes, Blink are holding fast to a summer release. And in spite of their packed schedules — and despite everything you may think — they are making progress toward that goal. One song at a time. “It really depends on the day how finished songs are … there’s songs that I think are finished that we go back and work on some more, there’s songs that I think are going to take a long time and they end up progressing pretty quickly,” Hoppus explained. “I feel like we’ve worked on about 16 tracks, of which 12 of those are making the cut. When songs don’t seem to be working, we let them fall by the wayside, and I think we’re pretty good about putting the better songs forward. So, we’re working on 12, five or six of those are in states that are near completion, and the other ones are formed ideas with structures and parts — they just need filling in. The skeletons are all there, we just need to fill in the pieces.” Are you excited about possibly finally getting the chance to hear new music from Blink-182? Tell us in the comments. Wiz Khalifa Explains Why Rolling Papers Has Few Collabos

‘I figured with my first album I could accomplish establishing my own identity,’ Wiz tells MTV News. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Steven Roberts Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa is riding high. The Pittsburgh rapper’s debut, Rolling Papers, sold 197,000 copies in its first week of release, enough to land the album at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. For Wiz, the success is made sweeter because although the album’s biggest hit so far is the Stargate-produced “Black and Yellow,” nearly half of the production on the record was provided by longtime Khalifa producers and collaborators I.D. Labs. “Other than making sure that my people that I came up with get filthy rich, I wanted to keep the sound consistent,” Wiz told MTV News about using his in-house team of beatmakers. “I wanted to really stick with what I know and build on that, other than getting in the position and completely switching. Take it to the next level was more what I had in mind.” Another familiar industry name made the album in spite of the fact that he, too, wasn’t in Wiz’s immediate circle. “We decided to add Too Short on ‘On My Level’ when we were deciding to do the video,” Wiz said of the first song he recorded for the album. “I wanted to do something bigger than just doing a video with me ’cause people were used to that at that time. So I was like, ‘Let’s just use our powers and holla at Too Short.’ “I’ve always been a big fan, ya know,” Wiz explained. “So when we did it, he knocked it straight out, which was a big deal for me. And then he was with getting in the video; that was really big for me too.” The only other featured rappers on Rolling Papers are Taylor Gang member Chevy Woods on “Star of the Show” and New Orleans MC Curren$y on “Rooftops.” Despite major co-signs from star MCs like Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg, Wiz made a conscious decision to keep the album’s guest list to a minimum. “I trimmed it down and I just kept it regular because I wanted to save that suspense of me working with these other artists and making these huge records,” Wiz said. “I wanted to save that. I figured with my first album I could accomplish establishing my own identity and that’s what I really wanted to do with this music and when that happens, I can do all that other stuff.” What’s your favorite Wiz collabo on Rolling Papers ? Mary J. Blige Announces My Life Sequel Release Date

Follow-up to MJB’s seminal disc, My Life II, The Story Continues, is set to drop September 20. By Alvin Blanco Mary J. Blige Photo: Brian Ach/ WireImage Fans can mark September 20 as the day that Mary J. Blige returns with her 11th album, My Life II, The Story Continues. By the time of the album’s release — a sequel to Blige’s triple-platinum My Life album — it will be almost two years since the Queen of Hip-Hop/R&B delivered her last project, Stronger With Each Tear. “From me to you, My Life II … our journey together continues in this life,” Blige said in a statement. “It’s a gift to be able to relate and identify with my fans at all times. This album is a reflection of the times and lives of people all around me.” Blige’s sophisticated and sample-driven My Life was released in 1994, and was executive-produced by Sean “Diddy” Combs, who was then going by Puff Daddy. And it’s probably no coincidence that Diddy is featured on the sequel’s lead single, “Someone to Love Me (Naked),” which also features a verse from Lil Wayne. The single’s groove is courtesy of Wyclef Jean’s cousin, the accomplished producer Jerry “Wonder” Duplessis. Other notable producers set to contribute to Blige’s forthcoming album include Kanye West, Stargate (Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow”) and Swizz Beatz. The original version of “Someone to Love Me” appeared on Diddy-Dirty Money’s Last Train to Paris. The version with Blige on it dropped at the top of the year and, at the time, it was thought to be just a remix. But a mastered version is available now on iTunes and although Blige tweeted that the Collin Tilley-directed video would debut April 8, the clip began making the Internet rounds on Monday. Blige has also been cast in the big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical “Rock of Ages,” which is set to star Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Diego Boneta. Related Artists Mary J. Blige

Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale: Will The Album Be #1?

Record is projected to sell 275,000 to 300,000 units in its first week. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Jive Britney Spears’ new album, Femme Fatale , is a chugging dance-pop album full of sexual innuendo and thumping beats, made even sexier by Spears’ flirty singing style. It’s Spears’ latest release since 2008’s Circus, which sped straight up the charts as soon as Britney’s dedicated fans could get their hands on it. While Spears remained somewhat under the radar for her last release, this time around, the pop star has been on a media blitz, and as of press time, Spears had the #1 album on iTunes. Hits Daily Double Senior Editor Roy Trakin explained to MTV News that judging from sales so far, Spears will likely have the #1 album by next week. “We’re going out with the projection 275,000 to 300,000 [albums sold]; probably below label projections but those are always inflated. I think everything’s kicking in. There seems to be a lot of press attention,” he said of the album. “I think this is still a healthy total for her given the market and given where her career has been. This is a good showing.” Not only have sales been strong, music critics have also been loving the album. “The critical reception seems to be fairly positive, as well. That doesn’t have much to do with sales, but the general feeling is positive. She’s gonna be #1,” Trakin said. “300,000 is the over-under.” This week, some of Spears’ biggest competition comes from Adele, whose 21 has been selling consistently well for weeks, Jennifer Hudson’s newest release, I Remember Me, which sits at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart, Chris Brown, whose album F.A.M.E. is currently the #1 album in the country, and this week’s other big new release, Wiz Khalifa’s debut album, Rolling Papers . “Given the state of the market right now, this will probably be, I would think, this will end up being the second biggest debut of the year. Only Adele would be larger this year,” Trakin said. “That’s pretty good, actually. The real big story this week is Wiz Khalifa with Rolling Papers, with between 190,000 and 215,000.” Is there any chance of an upset that forces Spears out of the #1 spot? Trakin explains that that is unlikely, saying, “The Wiz Khalifa showing is strong, but it’s about 100,000 below what Britney’s gonna do.” To see what Spears has to say about the album and to watch her as she puts the finishing touches on it, don’t miss the “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale” special, airing Sunday, April 3, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.
