Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Cover Is ‘Polarizing,’ Perez Hilton Says

‘She loves that people are talking about it,’ gossip blogger tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Perez Hilton and Lady Gaga Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images When Lady Gaga tweeted the Born This Way album art over the weekend, fans were a bit surprised by the cover photo, which features Gaga as a motorcycle/human hybrid. Was it a joke? Was it for real? Well, it was for real, and even days later, everyone’s still talking. “They were definitely divisive and it was a polarizing image,” Gaga’s pal Perez Hilton told MTV News. “I knew it would really get a reaction out of people, and that was her intent. She could have easily gone for something expected, but that’s the beautiful thing about Gaga.” The gossip blogger said the Nick Knight image’s intention was to get people buzzing, whether or not that buzz ended up in the Mother Monster’s favor. He even offered some insight into the photo’s message, which has been lost on some of Gaga’s Little Monsters. “She always wants to keep people guessing, and I think the cover works on many different levels,” he explained. “Literally, she was born that way, [like] some kind of mutant freak. There’s a lot of energy in that picture.” He adds that the vibe captured in the image will also find its way into the music on the May 23 album release. “There’s something very metal [about it and] ‘Judas’ [which was released last week] gives a taste of that dance/metal feeling,” he said. “Once the album comes out and they listen to the music, the artwork will make more sense. She loves that people are talking about it.” What do you think of the album cover? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga Confounds Fans With Born This Way Cover

“I don’t really understand what the album cover has to do with the theme of the album,” writes one fan. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Lady Gaga lives to confuse. From her interstellar stage costumes to her alien-like facial ridges and meat couture, Mother Monster keeps her fans on their toes. Take, for example, the recently revealed cover art for her hotly anticipated Born This Way album. In addition to instantly spawning a legion of has also done exactly what the pop star likely intended: set the Internet on fire with lively conversation, argument, conjecture and just a bit of unfocused rage. Here, then, are what a few of Gaga’s many opinionated followers had to say about the Born This Way cover art: “I don’t really understand what the album cover has to do with the theme of the album which is supposedly about being yourself (born this way),” wrote fan AB in reaction to an MTV News story on the image, a surreal assemblage depicting Gaga as the front fork of an “Easy Rider”-style chopper. “Obviously she wasn’t born to be a motorcycle lol also the font on the cover and the picture was just done really bad they could have done a much better job.” In a nod to the obsessive nature of Gaga fandom, however, Windrider countered with exactly why the cover makes perfect sense. “She foreshadowed this type of design perfectly in two remarks that her fans SHOULD be recalling by now: ‘I don’t want to be part of the machine. I want the machine to be part of me.’ From her appearance on Google Talk,” wrote Winrider, referencing Gaga’s Google interview with fans in early March. “The second is the entire discussion with the Haus in Gagavision #42 about the covers, when they talk about the DIY aspect of cover design (e.g., ‘Judas’) and doing something that is a ‘f— you’ to the over-commercialized graphic design aesthetic. And of course, it’s Gaga doing the very LAST thing you’d expect her to do.” Tamara totally agreed, dubbing the woman/machine blend a fitting metaphor for Gaga’s relentless professional drive. “Gaga is so energetic and does so very much all the time … she is a MACHINE, and an amazing, fast, stylish, revved up one at that!! Go Gaga! Nobody can top her,” she wrote. And there you have it. Nothing happens by chance in GagaLand, and her fans see meaning in every word and deed. That said, not everyone was convinced. “Not too fond of the album cover but honestly, not like many album covers from other musical stars are much better,” wrote Doodlebug. Vjuggalo, meanwhile, didn’t think it was creepy, just “uninspired” and, frankly, a hack photoshop job with “horrible” perspective and scaling. Others were just plain confused about what the motorcycle had to do with the album title (was Gaga born … a motorcycle?) and suggested other images that would have made more sense. “I’d rather have seen a naked newborn baby on the cover! At least it would fit,” said Cathy. “I remember when album covers actually meant something, and often matched the concept of the album or album title. It is the ugliest CD/album cover I’ve ever seen and Lady Gaga looks like she walked off a horror movie set.” Even Paul Teutul Jr., the “American Choppers” alumnus whose life is dedicated to creating monster machines, was on the fence about Gaga’s metal meld. “Looking at it, I would’ve made it more of an integration of her into the bike. It would be more seamless. In other words, it would be her and the bike morphed,” he told MTV News. “If you’re Born This Way , then it almost has to look kind of mermaid-ish, in the sense that there’s this fusion between the actual mechanical aspect and the human perspective. … It’s a little cut-and-paste looking. I would’ve done something even integrated throughout the bike that would’ve been more ‘Lady Gaga.’ ” What do you think of Gaga’s Born This Way album cover? Let us know in comments below. Martin Solveig’s ‘Ready 2 Go’ Video Premieres

DJ/producer drops second clip from his album Smash, set to drop this summer. By Adam Stewart Martin Solveig Martin Solveig may very well be one of the greatest athletes in dance music. And if you were one of the more than 22 million people who viewed his music video for “Hello” on YouTube — you know, the one where Solveig comes all the way back from a 6-love, 6-love deficit against fellow Frenchman Bob Sinclar, only to throw the tennis match due to a broken heart — then you know exactly why. And now Solveig has released his latest homage to sports with his video for “Ready 2 Go,” which premiered Friday (April 15). “We are shooting the video and episode for this at Stade de France,” Solveig told MTV News at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival last month. The track features the vocals of Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke, which keeps the overall feel “a bit more on the rock side. It’s quite exciting.” Exciting is a bit of an understatement. Fueled by the massive success of “Hello,” which was filmed live in front of 15,000 fans at the Roland Garros Tennis Stadium, “Ready 2 Go” again ventures toward high drama, with a humorous and ambitious plot that in the real world would likely land Solveig and his cohorts in prison. Cleverly garnished with v

Foo Fighters’ Tape Promo And More Rock Footnotes We’re Claiming

Our Bigger Than the Sound columnist is taking credit for that and five other moments in rock history. By James Montgomery James Montgomery interviews the Foo Fighters Photo: Jonathan Mussman / MTV News Honestly, I don’t know if I should be flattered or outraged right now. On Tuesday, the Foo Fighters released their (genuinely excellent) Wasting Light album, a snarling, knotty thing that, as anyone who bought a copy can attest to, also comes packaged with a snippet of the master tapes it was recorded on. I’ll be the first to admit that it’s a rather brilliant little marketing ploy, especially since I may have been the one who thought it up in the first place. See, last month, when I sat down with the Foos for the premiere of their “Rope” video , we spent a fair amount of time discussing Light ‘s recording process &#8212 and the band’s much-covered decision to make the album in Dave Grohl’s garage, directly to analog tape. At one point, Grohl told me that, after final mastering, he cut the master tapes up “into a million pieces,” which led me to suggest &#8212 half-jokingly, I will admit &#8212 that he should include the fragments of tape with the actual album. “What a great idea!” Grohl laughed. No kidding. And while the outrage I felt upon learning the Foos had, uh, appropriated my concept has subsided some (I’d still like a platinum plaque, though), the whole incident got me thinking. Because whether I meant for it to happen or not, over the years, I have been responsible for creating a lot of ancillary rock bullsh– just like the Wasting Light marketing scheme. I suppose I have a knack for inspiring footnotes in the ever-expanding book of rock and roll (as Musical March Madness has proven). So here’s a look back at some of my Greatest Hits: The Great Killers/Bravery Beef of 2005 Yes, I am the guy responsible for this petty feud, which was a very big deal back when folks mentioned the Killers and the Bravery in the same sentence (or, really, mentioned them at all). It all started when I interviewed Brandon Flowers in March 2005, just as the Killers’ Hot Fuss was gaining traction here in the States, and, flush with confidence, he took the opportunity to lay the verbal smackdown on the Bravery, whom he saw as pretenders to the Killers’ sparkly throne. “They’re signed because we’re a band,” he told me. “I’ve heard rumors about [members of] that band being in a different kind of band, and how do you defend that? If you say, ‘My heart really belongs to what I’m doing now,’ but you used to be in a ska band? I think people will see through them.” Oh, snap. The two sides would continue to spar for most of the year (my favorite part was when Bravery frontman Sam Endicott said Killers’ bassist Mark Stoermer looked like “a 9-foot-tall, Dutch-girl mutant”) before the beef eventually got too lean for anyone to care about. Though, in a semi-related note, a year later, Flowers told me that the Killers’ upcoming Sam’s Town would be “one of the best albums in the past 20 years,” a quote that would haunt him for the majority of the album’s cycle and, in a lot of ways, doom it completely. Needless to say, we haven’t spoken a whole lot since. The Fall Out Boy Song “West Coast Smoker” This is the final tune on their 2008 album Folie

Adele Back At #1 On Billboard Chart, Pushing Britney Spears To #2

Spears drops to #2 as sales of Femme Fatale trail off in second week. By Gil Kaufman Adele’s 21 Photo: Columbia Records It’s a bit early to call it a changing of the guard, but British songbird Adele will make a strong case that she is a major force to be reckoned with on the Billboard charts next week when her album 21 retakes the #1 spot. Thanks to sales of 88,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Adele pulls the feat off — her fourth non-consecutive week at #1 since the album’s release in late February — while forcing last week’s #1, Britney Spears ‘ Femme Fatale , down to #2. Spears’ highly anticipated new effort suffers a steep drop-off in its second chart cycle , plunging 73 percent on sales of 75,000, for a two-week total of 352,000. In contrast, Adele has pushed past the 1 million mark in seven weeks to notch the best-selling album of 2011 to date. Also losing a significant amount (70 percent) of business in its second week is rapper Wiz Khalifa ‘s Rolling Papers , which falls three spots to #5 on sales of 59,000. Masked rap-rock crew Hollywood Undead scored their best chart debut ever with American Tragedy, which comes in at #4 (66,000), while little-known metalers Asking Alexandria come in at #9 on sales of 31,000. The rest of the top 10: Radiohead , King of Limbs (#3, 67,000); Chris Brown , F.A.M.E. (#6, 51,000); the iTunes Songs for Japan compilation (#7, 51,000); Mumford & Sons ‘ Sigh No More (#8, 34,000); and Kirk Franklin ‘s Hello Fear (#10, 31,000). Jennifer Hudson ‘s I Remember Me slips four spots to #11 as sales dip 46 percent to 31,000, while Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and former Band member Robbie Robertson scores a #13 debut (22,000) for How to Become Clairvoyant, his first studio album in 13 years. Rapper Jim Jones hits #20 with the debut of his latest, Capo (21,000), indie faves The Kills come in at #37 with Blood Pressures (13,000), and superstar DJ Ti

Lady Gaga Talks ‘Judas’ Single, Influence Of Alexander McQueen

‘Right after he died, I wrote ‘Born This Way,’ she tells Harper’s Bazaar of late designer. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images In Lady Gaga’s latest Gagavision , the singer opens up about the making of “Judas.” In episode 42, fans learn that Gaga has been hard at work preparing for the highly anticipated release of Born This Way ‘s second single, which drops April 19. “I graphic-designed the ‘Judas’ single cover myself,” she shares in the video. “I photographed the image with my cellphone for texture.” Gaga then sits in a Haus meeting, discussing the specifics of her album release. “I don’t want the word ‘deluxe’ on the album,” she stipulates to her team. “I hate that word.” Scattered around Gaga are images, seemingly from something “Judas”-related . On one photo the word “Judas” is printed with a cross on it, looking like artwork that could have easily appeared in Baz Luhrmann’s version of “Romeo and Juliet.” More photos are also spread on the floor, one of which seems to be of Gaga, her hair long and blond. Gaga also opens up about her May 23 album release in the new issue of

Jim Jonsin Keeps Busy With ‘American Idol,’ Wiz Khalifa, Eminem

Producer tells Mixtape Daily he’s working with Shady Records’ Yelawolf. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Kara Warner Jim Jonsin Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily: Jim Jonsin Jim Jonsin says he’s in bed by midnight, but considering his schedule, we have a tough time believing him. One of the Grammy-winning producer and music executive’s latest gigs is mentoring contestants on the current, 10th season of “American Idol.” The Brooklyn native’s job duties include cutting full cover songs within a week’s time that are then sold on iTunes . “I’m into artist development, so I like taking an artist brand new and working with them and teaching them new things and watching them grow,” Jonsin told Mixtape Daily . “They’re having to grow at lightning speed. With the music producers injected into this now, now they’re really at hard knocks, right? Not only do you have to build this performance, but now you have to record a song. And record an amazing song that’s gotta go on iTunes for sale and it reflects you and you being an artist.” Looking at his production discography, it’s clear Jonsin’s career is nothing short of amazing itself. The former engineer for Slip-N-Slide Records has gone on to produce tracks for artists including T.I., Kelly Rowland, Usher and Lil Wayne, winning a Grammy for 2008’s “Lollipop.” Some new jacks have benefited from Jonsin’s studio touch too. Wiz Khalifa’s “On My Level” from his just-released debut, Rolling Papers , is a Jonsin creation. “He’s got that Snoop Dogg vibe with his own twist, Jay-Z kinda,” Jonsin said. “Working with Wiz, it was good. He’s kind of a traditional hip-hop artist, which I love most, mixed with this edgy skater-punk spirit. He definitely blends with my character: I like that.” Jonsin also speaks highly of B.o.B. The ATL rapper/singer/songwriter’s B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray was released on Jonsin’s Rebel Rock label in conjunction with Atlantic Records and Grand Hustle Records. B.o.B and Jonsin have started working on the gold-selling album’s follow-up. “His last album kind of reflects who he is, but he’s growing into something new,” Jonsin said. “I’m waiting for what he brings us back when we go back in the studio — he’s got some ideas — to kind of see the direction he’s going in. We’re letting him lead that. He’s really talented. The guy produces, writes, he does a lot of his own stuff. I think his album will reflect that. I think this album will have a lot of his own work on it. We’re waiting on him to give us the direction. “I think there’ll be less features on this album, more him singing and rapping. Definitely less features: He wants to showcase himself more, put out more of his own ideas.” Another artist Jonsin is working with — Roc Nation’s J. Cole — surely has plenty of ideas, even if he has yet to release an album. “He’s that traditional hip-hop. I’m trying to give it a little Jim Jonsin, a little crossover, a little rock,” Jonsin said. “Some of the stuff we did was more traditional hip-hop with just a little edge to it, some rock in it. So I think we’re going to stick to that and see what happens.” Jonsin’s schedule is also booked with working with 50 Cent for the first time and with Eminem on his latest Shady Records signee’s forthcoming album. “That’s going to be fun,” Jonsin said. “We’re working for Yelawolf’s project. It’s all about Yela. We’re going to actually produce together. I get to work with Eminem producing records.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
