Designer Drugs ‘Tell A Story’ On Hardcore/Softcore Album

Pennsylvania dance duo are set to take the stage at SXSW and Miami’s Ultra Music Festival. By Adam Stewart Designer Drugs Photo: MTV It’s been a long road for Pennsylvania electronic duo Designer Drugs, but for Michael Vincent Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson, that’s half the fun. Having been making music together for well over 10 years, the duo recently debuted their second album, Hardcore/Softcore, on Ultra Records and have been thrust into the ever-expanding American dance-music audience. Now, on the heels of the album’s second single, “Through the Prism,” featuring rapper and fellow Brooklynite Cerebral Vortex, Designer Drugs are poised to bring their unique brand of grind-house electronic to the masses Thursday night (March 17) at Austin, Texas’ South by Southwest, followed by a huge set on the Live Stage at Ultra Music Festival in Miami on March 25. “We started doing a lot of remixes and just trying to make a specific kind of music,” Patrick told MTV News. “But now, with the album, we are just doing whatever we want and making more of an electronic album.” “We had, like, a hundred songs and riffs,” Nelson added. “And we just basically picked ones we thought were the best for the album and put them all on. We didn’t really have a good idea of what we wanted to accomplish, but it ended up being what it was and we were pretty happy with it at the end.” Kicking things off with the first single “Drop Down,” a wobbly synth monster reminiscent of an edgy Prodigy-esque sound garnished with Gregorian chants, the vibe DD bring to the dance-music game is unique and captivating. Hardcore/Softcore brings the art of an album back to the table, melding full-length tracks with melodic interludes. “I think it kind of helped to tell a story for this album, but we didn’t plan it,” Patrick said. “Nothing for this album was really planned. It all kind of happened; we wrote all the music and then kind of linked it together.” “We just thought, ‘This sounded cool, but let’s not make it an entire song; let’s just kind of put it in there and see what happens,’ ” Nelson added. “But we do listen to a lot of old classic-rock stuff, too, like Pink Floyd and all that other stuff. So there was a little bit of influence from there.” Will you be catching Designer Drugs on the Live Stage of Ultra Music Festival in Miami? Let us know in the comments below!

Britney Spears Wanted To ‘Experiment’ On Femme Fatale

‘I really wanted to play with my voice and change up my sound,’ she tells Rolling Stone. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears in “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive When Britney Spears started planning Femme Fatale, there was no doubt in her mind that she wanted to take her time and make something incredibly different from anything she’s previously released. In a chat with Rolling Stone, the singer said she thinks she accomplished what she set out to do: “make a fresh-sounding album for the clubs or something that you play in your car when you’re going out at night that gets you excited.” “I wanted it to sound different from everything else out right now,” she told the mag. “I also wanted to experiment with all the different types of music I love, which is why you hear a mixture of pop, hip-hop and dance throughout the album. I also really wanted to play with my voice and change up my sound here and there, which was really fun.” Her first two singles certainly fit that bill. “Hold It Against Me” and “Till the World Ends” are sexy dance jams that are just a taste of what the album is about. “I really didn’t want to record anything on this album that could be mistaken for anyone else out there. I think my first two singles, ‘Hold It Against Me’ and ‘Till the World Ends,’ sound completely different from anything else,” she said. “And I think when my fans hear the rest of Femme Fatale, they’ll see how fresh every song is.” On the album, Spears worked with longtime collaborators Dr. Luke and Max Martin, but she also hooked up with will.i.am on the song “Big Fat Bass.” “The Peas make incredibly catchy, fun pop/dance records and I love will.i.am’s style,” she raved. “I have always wanted to do a song with him and would love to work with him more in the future. He is so interesting.” Like Spears, Luke wanted to push the boundaries for this album, and Spears described her “picky” attitude toward choosing songs, knowing that she wanted it to be “unique” from the other tracks on the radio. “I only wanted songs that I immediately connected to. I also wanted to make sure that this album was completely different from Circus or anything else I had ever recorded,” she said. “I love Circus, but I wanted something darker and edgier. I also wanted to make an album and didn’t want to just record a bunch of songs and put them together. I think Femme Fatale is really connected from start to finish.” Are you looking forward to Britney’s new music? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Britney Spears

Above & Beyond’s Tony McGuinness Turns Breakup Into ‘Sun & Moon’

Trance group gears up for Miami music week with their newest single. By Adam Stewart Tony McGuinness Photo: MTV News For Above & Beyond , and their loyal following, these are exciting times. With Miami’s annual Anjunabeats party on the horizon (at the Ice Palace on March 24), and their highly anticipated second studio album, Group Therapy, out in June, 2011 is shaping up to be a massive year for the U.K. trance trio. The album’s first single and video , “Sun & Moon,” recently hit the Web, and MTV News had the chance to catch up with one third of the collaborative, Tony McGuinness who gave us a little insight into the story behind song. “It was written about the same girl [Katy] that a lot of our early songs were written about,” McGuinness told MTV News. “It was a contender for the OceanLab album [ Sirens of the Sea ], but for many reasons, it didn’t make it on. It’s gone through a number of incarnations, and I think the reason why we were really happy for it to be the first single is that the sound of it is very now. … It is kind of classic Above & Beyond, a sad song — and that’s sort of what we do. I think when we do it well, we do it as well as anybody. That’s kind of our trademark, really.” The video, directed by Ferry Gouw, stars Alex Childs and Steve Cato as a feuding couple who have entered that “one last try” phase of a failing relationship that ends in a breakup. Eventually, she leaves him, and he turns to music and dancing for comfort. “I think everybody that you spend time with in your life, you learn from and grow through that period, and certainly that was true with Katy,” he explained. “So, she’s in my past, she’s a ‘failed relationship,’ but to me it was anything but a failure. And that’s what this song’s really trying to say, you know, whatever experiences you have, romantic or otherwise with people, there’s always a part of that relationship that lives on in your memory, hence the line, ‘You’ll never get over me, I’ll never get over you.’ I think those things are important. We’re still friends. I’m not sure how she feels about me writing about the darker parts of our relationship all the time, but, you know, I think that’s part of the inspiration that you get from other people.” McGuinness defines “Sun & Moon” as a sequel to the smash single “Alone Tonight”, from 2006’s Tri-State. “I really wanted to make sure that we represented the album, which I think ‘Sun and Moon’ does,” McGuinness said. “[It’s] smack back in the middle of what the album’s about. So I think sonically and musically and lyrically, it’s a very good advert for the album.” Will you be checking out Above & Beyond at their annual Anjunabeats party at the Ice Palace in Miami on March 24? Joe Jonas Talks Girlfriend Ashley Greene, New Solo Album

‘It feels good. I think what works about it is she really puts my feelings first,’ Jonas tells Details about current flame. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas on the cover of Details Photo: Details Joe Jonas had everyone buzzing when he announced he was working on a solo album, like his little brother Nick did before him. And just like when Nick announced his project, fans were wondering if this meant the end for the Jonas Brothers. In the new issue of Details magazine, Joe is quick to point out that he has not left his brothers behind. “We’re not breaking up, we’re just taking a break,” he explained. “I really have a hope for the fans that got older and went, ‘You know what, I’m really not into the Jonas Brothers anymore,’ that I’m able to catch their ear again with my project and they’re able to go like, ‘Hey, this is cool stuff, I’m happy listening to this, I’m not embarrassed listening to this.’ “I’m growing up, the fans are growing up. I’ve gone through a lot of stuff in my life so far. There are stories I haven’t really been able to tell,” he continued. “When you’re writing with three people, you wind up with a sound that might be — not average — but, you know, expected. I wanted to do something you could hear in a club or something you could dance to, something that’s fun — something that’s me.” Jonas added that he’s getting personal on this album and will release his first single within the month. “I think all artists have a right to write about what happens to them,” Joe said, noting that he’ll sing about “different love scenarios that I’ve been through, breakups, hurts. Me hurting somebody and feeling bad about it. I think there’s a lot of scenarios where people might wanna hear my side of the story.” No word on whether his current girlfriend, “Twilight Saga” star Ashley Greene , will have any songs about her on the album, but she certainly seems to have made a dent in his life. “It feels good. I think what works about it is she really puts my feelings first. She understands my busy schedule,” he said in the issue. “She’ll fly out to my shows — she’s been to places in South America that I can’t even pronounce.” He even shows some love to his former flame Demi Lovato . The pair broke up last year and she’s on the mend after dealing with some personal issues. Jonas has this message for her: “I wish her the best.” But Joe isn’t just talking about those two ladies. He debunks all the rumors about him being gay, saying, “There’s nothing wrong with being gay, but I’m not.” He added that he had his heart broken in a pre-Greene world. “I won’t say her name,” he said. “But I was in a relationship, and we tried to work things out, and she, you know — I was really upset because she — she broke up with me.” Related Artists Jonas Brothers
